Many Richmonders are familiar with the Richmond Symphony, but fewer know the organization’s younger brother, the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra (RSYO).
“Before I got into New Kent High School, I didn’t know anything about it,” says junior Isaiah Coles, a tuba (大号) player in his second year with RSYO. Then his band director, Brandon Hess, referred him to an instructor at Virginia Commonwealth University, Jeff Hudson, for tuba lessons. At Hudson’s suggestion, Coles auditioned (试音) for RSYO and was accepted.
Coles says he didn’t have much exposure to music in elementary school; he and his brothers preferred football and basketball. But that changed when Coles reached sixth grade and attended New Kent Middle School’s Beginning Band Instrument Night. “You were literally able to try out any instrument you’re interested in, and band students are there to help you,” he says. “You can meet current band members, learn about the instruments and get to see the band room, too.”
Although he was initially interested in the trumpet (小号), experimenting with the various instruments made Coles decide to pick up a tuba. “I practice throughout the whole day,” he says. “I’ll practice for about an hour and a half usually, and then have my actual band class after lunch. There’s a marching band after school. Once I’m home, I’ll practice again for about an hour.” He eats dinner, finishes his homework and then practices for yet another hour.
Jennifer Tobin, youth orchestra manager at the Richmond Symphony School of Music, says that Coles is also known for his passion and thirst for learning more. “Coles is one of those students that will often sit back and listen to the class quietly, and when he does say something, it’s usually something that’s really insightful,” she says.
Though he’s still in his second year of high school, Coles is already preparing for his senior recital, a big step in the college application process. “A lot of colleges require you to do auditions, and they’ll give you short pieces of music to play,” he explains. Once he gets admitted, Coles plans to study tuba performance and probably double in music education. He adds, “I want to help others. I like the teaching aspect.”
4. What does the author try to show in paragraph 4
A. Coles’ unique talent. B. Coles’ musical ambitions.
C. Coles’ expectations for the future. D. Coles’ devotion to practicing the tuba.
5. What do we know about Coles
A. He has clear career goals.
B. He never expresses his opinion in class.
C. He prefers working independently.
D. He showed musical talent at an early age.
6. Which of the following can best describe Coles
A. Brave and honest. B. Patient and strong.
C. Kind and humorous. D. Hardworking and ambitious.
7. What is the text mainly about
A. Coles’ journey into music. B. RSYO’s influence on Coles.
C. Coles’ achievements in music. D. The role of sports in Coles’ life.

Between 1997 and 2007, it seemed that every child was reading J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. Kids worldwide spent long hours reading the thick hardcovers two, three, four, or more times. But since the dawn of the 21st century, when digital reading of website articles, blogs, emails, social media posts, and chats began replacing print reading, the rate of children who read for fun has fallen suddenly. We may never again see another book series catch kids’ attention as Harry Potter did.
A recent analysis finds that digital reading may negatively affect kids’ reading comprehension skills. In 2011, scientists reviewed 99 studies exploring the effect of print reading on children’s comprehension skills. They found the more the kids were exposed to print reading, the better they were able to understand and recall what they were reading. Moreover, as young readers consumed longer and more complex texts, their reading abilities improved, causing them to pursue even more complex written works, further boosting their abilities.
For the new analysis, scientists collected 26 studies with close to 470,000 participants. Each study explored the effect of leisure-time digital reading on comprehension. They found that digital reading improves comprehension skills, but the beneficial effect is between six and seven times smaller than print reading, and it’s the smallest for children.
Because the youth tend to have weak impulse (冲动) control, they can be more susceptible (易受影响的) to distractions than adults when engaging in digital reading. They are also less likely to have mastered vocabulary and grammar rules, meaning they will be exposed to more fundamental writing on social media and in chats with friends. So parents and teachers should limit kids’ time with digital content, or at least emphasize print works or using basic e-readers with ink-screens. A 2019 study for the most part showed no difference in reading comprehension when reading works in print form vs on an e-reader, like the Kindle.
Will teens follow their elders’ advice People of Generation Z (aged 13-25) are not only reading more books per month (probably for pleasure) than those of Generation Y (aged 26-40) but also reading more print books than their older brothers. I hope more subsequent generations come back to print books.
8. What phenomenon does the author describe at the beginning of the text
A. Print books are too hard to understand.
B. Kids still enjoy reading the Harry Potter series.
C. Kids’ passion for print reading has greatly declined.
D. Social media has changed people’s way of having fun.
9. Which term can best describe the relationship between print reading and kids’ reading abilities
A. A positive cycle. B. A role effect.
C. A butterfly effect. D. A random change.
10. What might the author advise parents and teachers to do
A. Use e-readers with colorful screens.
B. Reduce kids’ exposure to digital content.
C. Encourage kids to read more fantasy novels.
D. Expose kids to merely fundamental writing.
11. What’s the author’s attitude towards the future return of print reading
A. Doubtful. B. Pessimistic. C. Positive. D. Indifferent.
D
It is no secret that the Romans were heavy wine drinkers and vine (葡萄藤) growing dominated much of the agricultural landscape.
A very common technique for growing grape vines in Roman times was to attach them to rows of trees in fields that were also used for food plants and vegetables in a system called arbustum. Farmers would grow several crops together on the low-lying and flat lands in order to survive. These lands were often close to rivers and coasts, attractive areas for settlement and agriculture, which contrasted sharply with the typical landscape of hillsides covered by rows of tightly spaced vines in modern vineyards.
For modern winemakers, growing vines in wet soil and air is unthinkable. It presents a huge risk of fungal (真菌的) diseases that could weaken and kill the vines. Nevertheless, the Romans made it work. The main tree species used in the arbustum system included populars, elms, alders, willows, maples, and ashes, which grew well in wet environments. These trees needed lots of water to sustain their rapid growth and absorbed extra water from the soil, acting as a water pump and contributing to the natural drainage (排水) of an area. Their roots meant vines could stay healthy and perform well in such environments for centuries on end. By training vines to climb high—up to 15 or even 20 meters—the damage done by rising soil wetness was further reduced, while the heating impact of the sun was increased.
The arbustum system had some additional boons. The trees influenced the microclimate of the vineyard by lessening winter frosts, protecting against strong winds, and reducing unwanted seed distribution. Most importantly, the shade provided by trees seemed to delay the ripening of grapes by weeks without problematically decreasing production. This is a blessing for winemakers who are increasingly faced with grapes that mature too quickly, have too many sugars, and give lower quality wine with too much alcohol as a result of higher annual temperatures.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has stressed the need for expanding agroforestry (农林业) and spreading its numerous environmental and socioeconomic advantages, especially in helping millions of farmers survive in an increasingly warming climate.
12. What was the main feature of the ancient vines in Roman times
A. They were mixed with other crops.
B. They relied heavily on water resources.
C. They were tightly spaced in a hilly area.
D. They grew on hillsides with abundant sun exposure.
13. How did the Romans manage to grow vines in wet soil
A. By planting the roots deeper. B. By setting up drainage channels.
C. By introducing special tree species. D. By applying chemical treatments to the soil.
14. What does the underlined word “boons” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Requirements. B. Benefits.
C. Expenses. D. Workloads.
15. What may the ancient Roman vine planting bring us
A. Suggestions for exploring ancient farming.
B. Methods for increasing incomes of farmers.
C. Insights into fully using limited land resources.
D. Clues for adapting agriculture to a warming planet.

Pinky was standing at the kitchen window when she first saw the bird fly past. In its mouth, it held some straw. Pinky strained hard to look out of the window, but the bars held her back. She only saw the bird turn the far corner of the kitchen and fly out of sight.
And just then her grandmother called out sharply, “Pinky, why haven’t you made your bed yet ” “Coming, Nani!” Pinky responded, rushing to her room and excitedly sharing the bird sighting with her grandmother. Nani, however, was more concerned about household chores than bird watching.
After lunch, Nani cleared the kitchen and lay down for a nap (午睡). Then Pinky raced back to the kitchen and took up her position at the window. The minutes ticked by on Nani’s old clock on the kitchen shelf but the bird did not come. Pinky knew that Nani never slept for long and once she was up, hanging around watching for the bird was out of the question. Suddenly, she had an idea. The terrace! She could watch for the bird from the terrace!
As Pinky reached the terrace, she drew in her breath sharply. Oh horrors! The bird was actually building a nest in her grandfather’s room, which was out of bounds. Nobody was allowed inside. He had passed away four years back but his things were all there. Nani might even throw out the nest.
In the days that followed, Pinky watched helplessly as the bird flew in and out of the room from the broken window. How hard the bird worked to build a home for her or maybe her babies! And how terrible if Nani should suddenly decide to throw it out! Suddenly Pinky knew she had to help the bird. She simply had to shift the nest out of the room.
The task was challenging since the room was locked, and the key was attached to Nani’s clothes. But when Nani went to bathe, Pinky seized the opportunity to take the key and open the door.

【答案】8. C 9. A 10. B 11. C

【答案】 There was no time to lose. With the nest held firmly in her hands, Pinky ran out of the room. Her eager eyes swept the scene, but there was not a single spot suitable for a little nest. Finally, she placed the nest which she was so careful of on the corner of the window. “There,” she said happily. “now the bird can’t miss it!” She turned around, clapping her hands. Then she locked the door and ran down to put back the key. After doing this, Pinky was very glad and full of excitement.
However, the next day, when Nani decided to clean the room, Pinky’s heart sank. She followed Nani, nervous about what would happen to the nest. Upon entering the room, Pinky and Nani found a broken egg where the nest had been. Nani wondered why the foolish bird laid an egg without a nest. Pinky, in tears, admitted it was her fault for moving the nest. Nani comforted her and explained the importance of not interrupting the wildlife. Hearing Nani’s words, Pinky felt comforted and hoped that the bird would return and rebuild the nest the next year.
