Then, when we went to the shelter, we told the shelter worker, “We’ve brought the animals here some cat and dog food. Could you open the back door so it will be easier to bring the food in ”

It is natural to compare ourselves with others and to end up in a mental (内心的) comparison circle. However, this is never beneficial (有益的). You may have heard the words, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” To me, this is true. I find it is quite difficult to compare myself with others and feel joy at the same time.
Comparison not only takes away our joy, but also leads to self-criticism (自我批评) and a lack (缺乏) of self-acceptance (自我接纳). Usually, comparison makes us think that others are better than us in some way. As a result, we may feel inferior (自卑的). “I am not as successful or attractive as they are. Why don’t I have what they have ” We use comparison as a way to self-criticism, “What’s wrong with me I must be a loser.” This slows down self-acceptance.
Comparison is deceptive (误导人的). It seems to tell us that if we meet the expectations (期待) such as losing weight or getting a great score, we will feel better, confident and stop comparing ourselves. However, this may be true only for a short time. In fact, a comparison is based on our inner thoughts and sense of self (自我感知), not surroundings (周围环境). Soon we will find something else to compare, another expectation we are not meeting, leaving us feeling worse once again. A student might celebrate being chosen for the school play, but then compare the importance of their role to that of the lead actor, resulting in new feelings of inferiority (自卑) and getting stuck into another circle of comparison.
To stop comparing ourselves with others, we should know that comparison is a losing game and then step away from parison should not be the reason we decide to change. Instead, we try to change because of our own values (价值). Think about your values and match your behaviors and decisions with your values. This does not mean we ignore (忽视) things that we may want to change. It means these changes and goals are based on values not comparison with others.
Behaviors and decisions are a matter of personal choice, not a way to keep up with others. Self-acceptance isn’t about fixing anything about yourself, it is about accepting who you are today.
38.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A.The results of comparison. B.The joy of self-acceptance.
C.The necessity of self-criticism. D.The reasons for comparison.
39.The writer suggests that comparison is deceptive because ________.
A.it is always based on our surroundings
B.it only offers us short-term happiness
C.it always comes from false information
D.it prevents us from making personal choices
40.The writer probably agrees that ________.
A.we should focus our own values and self-acceptance
B.we can improve ourselves by setting up higher goals
C.we shouldn’t pay attention to things we need to change
D.we will stop comparison as long as we achieve our goals
41.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A.Why it’s Beneficial to Compare B.Turn from Values to Comparison
C.How Self-acceptance Works D.Say Goodbye to Comparison

Most young boys like spending time on things like video games, superhero movies and sports, but Ken, a 9-year-old boy from the Philippines, is spending his free time trying to start an animal shelter (收容所) for at-risk dogs.
In February, photos of Ken feeding dogs on the street became famous over the Internet and immediately many people wanted to help. “I feel sorry for the dogs with no owners while other dogs around the world are being pampered (宠养),” Ken answered when asked by a reporter from Pet360 about his choice. “It really wasn’t fair. And they are really thin.”
When Ken began feeding the dogs which had health problems, they would not let the boy come close. But after several feedings, the dogs warmed up to Ken and allowed the boy to help them. When animal lovers found out what Ken was doing, donations (捐赠) were given, and Ken and his father were able to start a public animal shelter called Happy Animals Club. The donations helped three dogs, Blackie, Brownie and White Puppy, receive high-quality canned food and medicine. After two months with Ken at Happy Animals Club, the dogs look like completely different animals and will be adopted (领养) soon.
In May, Ken and his father rent a parking lot, where Ken hopes to build a no-kill animal shelter to help more dogs in need. “I want the dogs to have a home, where they can have shelter, eat and have fun,” says Ken.

Over the holidays, lots of people will travel to different parts of the world with friends and family. A popular holiday activity is snorkeling with sea life in the ocean.
Snorkeling is the sport or activity of swimming underwater with a snorkel. The snorkel helps people breathe when they are looking down, so that they can better enjoy the sea life. Perfect places for snorkeling with sea life are warm seas with clear water and almost no waves.
For people who love sea life, snorkeling is a good chance to see amazing animals in their habitat (栖息地). Seeing these animals up close is a great way to call on people to care for and protect sea life and the environment (环境). Also, snorkeling offers people jobs. As snorkeling becomes more popular, more tour guides and boat drivers will be needed.
However, some people are against the idea of snorkeling with sea life. Even though animals are free to leave when people swim near them, visiting them could affect (影响) animals’ behavior (行为) and population numbers. According to a study, snorkeling tours can cause dolphin pods (海豚群) to leave their usual feeding areas. Also, people may get hurt when getting close to sea life. After all, wildlife in the sea is just that-wild.
What’s more, snorkeling with sea life may bring problems to the sea environment. For example, when getting too close to sea life, people may damage coral reefs (破坏珊瑚礁). They are important for the sea environment, because they offer food and habitat for sea life. Also, the boats that are used to take people to see sea life are likely to pollute the water.
So, is it OK to snorkel with sea life It really depends on who you ask.
