In casual conversations, government documents, and formal job interviews, there is a seemingly simple question I can never answer without hesitating: “Where are you from ”
I could say I am from Japan - I was born there, after all. Or, should I say I am from the United States, whose culture, philosophy, and language are deeply rooted into my life In my mind, none of these answers are satisfying enough. I had to live with this sense of sadness till very recently.
Inside my drawer is a simple, white bath towel that I have not used since I brought it from my parent’s house last summer. On an ordinary evening, I took it out to take a bath, but stopped after the sweet smell of laundry detergent (洗涤剂) that my parents used back in Japan wafted (飘荡) into my nose. I felt my eyes water as that smell brought up my mixed emotions: sadness, loneliness, and nostalgia. It’s silly, but I still avoid using that towel to this day because I don’t want to replace the smell of nostalgia with my Tide detergent.
A similar thing happened when I was walking through a supermarket. Somehow being in the vegetable section, with the smells of raw vegetables and some unknown spices (香料), brought up the broad strokes of a memory from when I lived in California. That smell took me back to an open market my father always loved to go to. Anytime I come across that “vegetable smell,” I can blurrily (模糊地) picture the green plastic boxes with onions, savory spices, and people’s voices. I don’t know the name of that market, where it was, or if it even exists now, but I can remember that it always brought a sense of comfort.
Though, I still struggle when answering where I am from, in some moments, when a smell hits me with the memories it brings, I like to believe the things I feel then are things people feel when they are home. Myself, my “home,” are still split, but I am lucky enough to feel like I am “at home” in these short moments.
4. Why is the first paragraph written
A. To picture a scene in daily life. B. To provide background information.
C. To lead to the topic of the text. D. To show the importance of home.
5. What does the underlined word “nostalgia” mean in the third paragraph
A. Anxiety. B. Homesickness. C. Stress. D. Excitement.
6. What can we learn about the author
A. He has an unclear memory of the childhood life.
B. He always went to a supermarket with his father.
C. He is more greatly influenced by American cultures.
D. He can answer where he comes from without thinking.
7. What’s the text mainly about
A. The unforgettable past life. B. The difficulty of answering a question.
C. The value of home. D. The smell of home.
C
In the men’s long jump T11 final at the Paris Paralympics, Di Dongdong from northeastern China’s Liaoning province broke a 10-year-old world record with a jump of 6.85 meters to take the gold medal.
In the long jump T11 match, where players were totally blind. Di relied only on the voice of his coach Wang Lin, who stood at the front of the takeoff board, calling out to guide him. With his eyes covered by a blindfold, Di made decisions through the rhythm(节奏) of Wang’s shouts, adjusting his step and timing his jump. With each call from his coach, Di Dongdong pushed harder, running fast down the purple track. As the final command gave, Di jumped, tracing a graceful arc(弧线) through the air. His jump of 6.85 meters not only enabled him to win the gold medal in the 2024 Paris Paralympics men’s long jump T11, but also shattered a decade-old world record.
Di, 31, developed severe glaucoma(青光眼) at the age of 6 and later suffered a detached retina(视网膜脱落) after a ball hit him in the eye. The accident left him with a grade-1 disability. In fact, the sport needs impressive skills, presenting a greater challenge for visually impaired players, but it never made Di lose heart. Instead, he spent years training to achieve his goal.
Also, Di admitted the important role his coach played in his success. “Coach Wang is like my eyes,” Di said. “With him guiding me, it’s as if I’ve regained my sight, allowing me to run fearlessly and make that jump.” Off the track, they are more than just partners in sport; they are friends, often as close as family. While teenagers who are at risk of depression with risky behaviors - drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and cutting classes often warn parents and teachers that serious problems are arising, a new study finds that there is another group of adolescents who are in nearly as much danger of experiencing the same mental symptoms (精神症状).
These teens use tons of media, get insufficient (不充足的) sleep and have a sedentary (不爱活动的) lifestyle. Of course, that may sound like every teenager on the earth. But the study warns that it is teenagers who participate in all three of these practices in the extreme that are truly in a dangerous position. Because their behaviors are not usually seen as a red flag, these young people have been called the “invisible risk” group by the study’s authors.
The study’s authors surveyed 15,395 students and analyzed nine risk behaviors, including excessive alcohol use, illegal drug use, heavy smoking and high media use. Their aim was to determine the relationship between these risk behaviors and mental health issues in teenagers. The group that scored high on all nine of the risk behaviors was most likely to show symptoms of depression; in all, nearly 15% of this group reported being depressed, compared with just 4% of the low-risk group. But the invisible group wasn’t far behind the high-risk set, with more than 13% of them exhibiting depression.
The findings caught Carli off guard. “We didn’t expect that,” he says. “The high-risk group and low-risk group are obvious, but this third group was not only unexpected. It was so distinct and so larger - nearly one third of our sample - that it became a key finding of the study.”
Carli says that one of the most important things about his study is that it provides new early warning signs for parents, teachers and mental health-care providers. And early identifications, support and treatment for mental health issues, he says, are the best ways to keep them from turning into full-blown disorders.
12. Which teenager probably doesn’t belong to the “invisible group”
A. A teenager who often smokes. B. A teenager who dislikes taking exercise.
C. A teenager who has an addiction to media. D. A teenager who lacks sleep.
13. What can we know about the new study
A. It interviewed students and analyzed risk behaviors.
B. It was designed to find out the reasons for depression.
C. It showed how the invisible group suffering depression.
D. Its findings were beyond expectation of the research team.
14. What is Carli’s attitude toward the findings
A. Unclear. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Negative.
15. What can be the most suitable title of the text?
A. Red Flag of Depression. B. Invisible Group of Depression.
C. Depression Symptoms of Risky Groups. D. Depression Behaviors of Invisible Group.
