本诗为无韵脚诗，此类诗歌不强调行尾韵脚，且每行长短有别，其节拍性不如有韵脚诗那么强。但它并非毫无节奏，它往往通过相同的语句结构和反复重复的元、辅音发音进行弥补。
在本诗中，我们读到大量的When…, I should be allowed to …和I…语句，我们耳畔不停想起“I”音和“s(z)”音。这些语句结构和语音特点衬托出诗歌的复现性特征，加之各行自身的语句重音，体现了节奏感，弥补了失缺韵脚的不足。
