Growing up in India, Dr George Varghese had no Interest in computers.Instead, he spent much of his time playing sports.
Varghese’s interest in networks and how they function grew out of his studies in electrical engineering at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Bombay.A teacher returning from the University of California-Los Angeles fired his curiosity about the performance of the Internet.“It was very theoretical (理论的), but it did interest me to create something new,” Varghese says.
Varghese’s work to improve the speed of networks, and thus the Internet itself, developed further during his first job. While at Digital Equipment Corporation, he watched three world-class products being built the first bridge, the DECNIS router, and the Gigaswitch. He recognized the potential (潜力) in the interplay between hardware design and systems that he later developed into the textbook Network Algorithmics: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Designing Fast Networked Devices.
The textbook is Varghese’s proudest professional achievement, because the general rules in the book have held up since its first printing almost 20 years ago.“I was shocked that the world had changed so much with cloud computing.Yet it seemed to me that the rules still held.I hope they keep holding for many years as network technologies keep changing,” Varghese says.
As for his ongoing job to improve the Internet’s performance, Varghese was influenced by Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger’s book,The Juggling Act: Bringing Balance to Your Faith, Family, and Work.Gelsinger describes the Internet as a modern version (版本) of ancient Roman roads both made business and the spread of ideas and culture faster.

It usually takes a generation or two to measure the full effects of changes in technology and the influence that these changes have on our lives.
We have just gone through another industrial revolution (变革) with the creation of the Internet. You wouldn’t know life before the Internet, but it is very different now.Just like when I was a kid, I wouldn’t have known what life was like before television. However, the fact is that we are seeing what is happening now before our very eyes.It is all mostly good, but some of it has a bad influence as well.
The past years has seen the rise of social media as the source of communication and information. Our little handheld phones have become our window to the world round the clock, where people can share experiences with others all around the planet.
But as with most things, we have seen the downsides of social media. The spreading of false news, online bullying (欺凌), and unpleasant images are just some of the downsides.
We are seeing young people losing themselves in their screens by checking things on social media or having thoughts of self-harm.Older generations say “just turn off the phone”, but they don’t realize that young people are conditioned to live in that online world and it is impossible to turn it off.
That is why the government is now looking for the prevention by different means. And one of them is raising the age limits for social media users. But how would that work? I find it fun to think that my older Boomer generation is going to try to block social media access and outsmart these teens. We know who will win that one! But as I said at the start, we are seeing the effects of this technology after a couple of generations and we need to do something about it.
5.What is the author’s opinion about the revolution caused by the Internet?( )
A.It will last for a short time. B.It has more bad influences.
C.We can do nothing about it. D.We can see it shaping our life.
6.What is an advantage of mobile phones according to the text?( )
A.They make it easy to travel alone. B.They are quite cheap.
C.They keep us connected at all times. D.They create new ideas.
7.What does the author want to show by mentioning online bullying?( )
A.The serious health risk. B.The danger of social media.
C.The mistakes students make. D.The false news on the Internet.
8.What might the author continue talking about?( )
A.Other harm prevention measures. B.The reason why we take action.
C.Parents’ doubts about social media. D.The role the Internet can play.

5 / 5Section Ⅴ LESSON 3 SO CLOSE, YET SO FAR
Mark never stops socialising with his friends online. But he’s also never felt more alone.
Where am I? What am I doing? [1]If you’re one of my 500 friends online, you’ll always be the first to know. My phone and laptop are never out of touching distance, so I’m constantly① posting updates on social media — whether I’m having a coffee, on my way to② school, watching TV ...even when I’m in the shower. As soon as I open my eyes in the morning, I check through③ all my social networking apps, read my emails and answer text messages.I do the same thing all over again while I’m having breakfast.
I live in a university dorm④ with a couple of great roommates.I have a never-ending flow⑤of messages and updates from all the people I associate⑥ with online.Yet the truth of the matter is:I feel lonely.
I’m barely⑦the only person who feels this way.[2]According to research, over two-thirds of young people find it easier to make friends online than it is “in real life”. I’m way beyond⑧ a shy or reserved person, but I’m wired up every day, like most of my friends. On the surface⑨, I have an active social life.I attend parties and play sports but I’m always distracted⑩.They say that phones bring people closer together but in reality , my mind is always a million miles away.I obsess over exactly how many followers I have on my account, but I can’t remember the birthdays of some of my oldest mates.
Social networking dominates my life in so many ways.Sometimes I set deadlines for myself:I will start doing my homework at 8 pm, and aim to finish in two hours. At 7.50 pm, I’m still scrolling through my friends’ silly posts and photos. Before I know it, it’s 9.30 pm and I still haven’t moved an inch from the sofa.I download song after song, video after video, but I’m not really paying attention. The stimulation is in chasing after the next song rather than truly enjoying it.[3]My friends try to drag me away from my phone, but as soon as I’m alone again, I’m desperate to get back to the online world and the intense activity that it provides.
I constantly feel depressed , dissatisfied and alone.Since I spend so much time socialising online, I keep delaying things that are important in my real life:homework, tasks, connecting with my friends and family members in a meaningful way.[4]It’s funny that my friends and I chatter away online so much, but we end up having nothing to say when we meet.
在第二个并列分句中,as soon as引导时间状语从句,that it provides为限制性定语从句。
A few days ago, I went out for a dinner get-together with some friends. My best friend left the table for 30 minutes because he had to take a call. Some spent the dinner bending over their phones, texting friends online but ignoring the ones who sat right in front of them. And the extraordinary thing is nobody thought this was rude; it’s just how life is nowadays. On a family holiday last summer, my sister spent all her time complaining that she needed to charge her phone.[5]When it was charged, she just spent hours reading about her favourite popstar; not once did she lift her head to enjoy the view outside her window.

[6]What is really worrying is that no one I know, including myself, could go cold turkey. I can’t even imagine going without social networking for a week — think of all the important appointments , invitations and news updates you would miss! Alcoholics who want to quit drinking can avoid booze, but how do we give up our phones? After all , I need it for my studies because my teachers and classmates need to contact me at any time.
So, that’s the problem with social networking. We’re hard-wired in, but we’re more disconnected than ever.

Step One: Pre-reading
1.What roles do social networking and the Internet play in your daily lives? What do you use them for?

2.How many online friends do you have? Do social networking and the Internet help improve your relationships with others? Give some examples.

Mark never stops socialising with his friends online. But he’s also
never felt more alone.
Where am I? What am I doing? [1]If you’re one of my 500 friends
online, you’ll always be the first to know. My phone and laptop are never
out of touching distance, so I’m constantly① posting updates on social
media — whether I’m having a coffee, on my way to② school,
watching TV ...even when I’m in the shower. As soon as I open my eyes in
the morning, I check through③ all my social networking apps, read my
emails and answer text messages.I do the same thing all over again while
I’m having breakfast.
I live in a university dorm④ with a couple of great roommates.I have a
never-ending flow⑤of messages and updates from all the people I associate
⑥ with online.Yet the truth of the matter is:I feel lonely.
I’m barely⑦the only person who feels this way.[2]According to
research, over two-thirds of young people find it easier to make friends
online than it is “in real life”. I’m way beyond⑧ a shy or reserved person,
but I’m wired up every day, like most of my friends. On the surface⑨, I
have an active social life.I attend parties and play sports but I’m always
distracted⑩.They say that phones bring people closer together but in reality
, my mind is always a million miles away.I obsess over exactly how
many followers I have on my account, but I can’t remember the birthdays
of some of my oldest mates.
Social networking dominates my life in so many ways.Sometimes I
set deadlines for myself:I will start doing my homework at 8 pm, and
aim to finish in two hours. At 7.50 pm, I’m still scrolling through my
friends’ silly posts and photos. Before I know it, it’s 9.30 pm and I still
haven’t moved an inch from the sofa.I download song after song, video
after video, but I’m not really paying attention. The stimulation is in
chasing after the next song rather than truly enjoying it.[3]My friends
try to drag me away from my phone, but as soon as I’m alone again,
I’m desperate to get back to the online world and the intense activity
that it provides.
I constantly feel depressed , dissatisfied and alone.Since I spend
so much time socialising online, I keep delaying things that are important
in my real life:homework, tasks, connecting with my friends and
family members in a meaningful way.[4]It’s funny that my friends and I
chatter away online so much, but we end up having nothing to say
when we meet.
并列分句中,as soon as引导时间状语从句,that it provides为限制性定
A few days ago, I went out for a dinner get-together with some
friends. My best friend left the table for 30 minutes because he had to take a
call. Some spent the dinner bending over their phones, texting friends
online but ignoring the ones who sat right in front of them. And the
extraordinary thing is nobody thought this was rude; it’s just how life is
nowadays. On a family holiday last summer, my sister spent all her time
complaining that she needed to charge her phone.[5]When it was
charged, she just spent hours reading about her favourite popstar; not
once did she lift her head to enjoy the view outside her window.
[6]What is really worrying is that no one I know, including myself,
could go cold turkey. I can’t even imagine going without social
networking for a week — think of all the important appointments ,
invitations and news updates you would miss! Alcoholics who want to
quit drinking can avoid booze, but how do we give up our phones?
After all , I need it for my studies because my teachers and classmates
need to contact me at any time.
So, that’s the problem with social networking. We’re hard-wired in,
but we’re more disconnected than ever.

live without. However, our addiction to social networking can lead to a

Growing up in India, Dr George Varghese had no Interest in
computers.Instead, he spent much of his time playing sports.
Varghese’s interest in networks and how they function grew out of his
studies in electrical engineering at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)
in Bombay.A teacher returning from the University of California-Los
Angeles fired his curiosity about the performance of the Internet.“It was
very theoretical (理论的), but it did interest me to create something
new,” Varghese says.
Varghese’s work to improve the speed of networks, and thus the
Internet itself, developed further during his first job. While at Digital
Equipment Corporation, he watched three world-class products being
built the first bridge, the DECNIS router, and the Gigaswitch. He
recognized the potential (潜力) in the interplay between hardware
design and systems that he later developed into the textbook Network
Algorithmics: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Designing Fast
Networked Devices.
The textbook is Varghese’s proudest professional achievement,
because the general rules in the book have held up since its first printing
almost 20 years ago.“I was shocked that the world had changed so much
with cloud computing.Yet it seemed to me that the rules still held.I hope
they keep holding for many years as network technologies keep
changing,” Varghese says.
As for his ongoing job to improve the Internet’s performance,
Varghese was influenced by Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger’s book,The
Juggling Act: Bringing Balance to Your Faith, Family, and
Work.Gelsinger describes the Internet as a modern version (版本) of
ancient Roman roads both made business and the spread of ideas and
culture faster.

It usually takes a generation or two to measure the full effects of
changes in technology and the influence that these changes have on our
lives.
We have just gone through another industrial revolution (变革)
with the creation of the Internet. You wouldn’t know life before the
Internet, but it is very different now.Just like when I was a kid, I
wouldn’t have known what life was like before television. However, the
fact is that we are seeing what is happening now before our very eyes.It is
all mostly good, but some of it has a bad influence as well.
The past years has seen the rise of social media as the source of
communication and information. Our little handheld phones have become
our window to the world round the clock, where people can share
experiences with others all around the planet.
But as with most things, we have seen the downsides of social
media. The spreading of false news, online bullying (欺凌), and
unpleasant images are just some of the downsides.
We are seeing young people losing themselves in their screens by
checking things on social media or having thoughts of self-harm.Older
generations say “just turn off the phone”, but they don’t realize that
young people are conditioned to live in that online world and it is
impossible to turn it off.
That is why the government is now looking for the prevention by
different means. And one of them is raising the age limits for social media
users. But how would that work? I find it fun to think that my older
Boomer generation is going to try to block social media access and
outsmart these teens. We know who will win that one! But as I said at the
start, we are seeing the effects of this technology after a couple of
generations and we need to do something about it.
