Ⅰ.阅读理解
Wild bison (野牛) are to return to the UK for the first time in 6,000 years, with the release of one male and three females in Blean woods in Kent soon. The £ 1 million project to reintroduce the animals will help secure the future of an endangered species. But they will also naturally regenerate a former pine wood plantation by killing off trees.
Populations of the UK’s most important wildlife have greatly plummeted since 1970.Britain is one of the countries suffering great species loss in the world, despite the best efforts of protectors.
Paul Hadaway, from Kent Wildlife Trust, said: “The Wilder Blean project will prove that a wilder, nature-based solution is the right one to tackle the climate and nature crisis we now face.
“Using missing keystone species (关键物种) like bison to bring back natural processes to habitats is the key to creating biodiversity in our landscape.”
Known as “ecosystem engineers”, bison kill selected trees by eating their bark or using them as a tool to remove their thick winter fur. This creates a big dead wood dinner for insects, which provide food for birds.Tree felling also creates sunny clearings where plants can grow healthily.
The bison will not be given any food or artificial shelters, though their health will be monitored by observing their coats and examining their waste.“We need to keep them as wild as possible for the project to succeed,” said Hadaway. But he said there was no intention to introduce enemies such as wolves.“It’s increasingly clear that daring and imaginative rewilding (再野生化) is urgently needed to tackle the country’s worrying loss of wildlife,” said Rebecca Wrigley, of Rewilding Britain. She said far more needed to be done across the UK to reintroduce large animals feeding on plants and let them do their magic.Hadaway said:“Sometimes in the rewilding debate people think that it’s a look back to the past, but that’s not what we’re about. We’re about trying to find the right natural solution for the modern world.”
1.What is the main purpose of the £ 1 million project?( )
A.To make Kent more beautiful with bison.
B.To reintroduce bison and protect an endangered species.
C.To build a new park in Blean woods.
D.To study the behavior of wild bison.
2.What does the underlined word “plummeted” in paragraph 2 mean?( )
A.Decreased rapidly. B.Stayed the same.
C.Increased greatly. D.Fluctuated slightly.
3.Why are bison called “ecosystem engineers”?( )
A.Because they can change the environment to benefit other species.
B.Because they can monitor the health of other animals.
C.Because they can build artificial shelters.
D.Because they can protect trees from being damaged.
4.Which of the following would be the most suitable title for this passage?( )
A.Wild Bison: The Most Endangered Species in the UK
B.UK’s Wildlife Protection: Past and Present
C.The Role of Bison in UK’s Forest Restoration
D.The Reintroduction of Wild Bison: A Hope for UK’s Biodiversity

One day my mom and I read a story in a magazine called Humane Society News.A wild dog named Solo died for lack of medical care after he was ill.I knew how sad the story was because my own dog, Kela, had recently died.My world had ended when I lost Kela. She had been my best friend since I could remember. The article continued to tell about wildlife rehabilitators. They nursed the sick animals back to health, but as more and more animals were rescued, the medical expense became a big burden for them.I immediately determined to do something for them.I may be a kid, but why can’t I do a fund-raiser to help save more dogs?
My mom thought it was hard for an 11-year-old girl to raise, but she told me to go ahead and try it anyway.I realized that I needed a name for the fund-raiser and thought since I was trying to protect dogs’ lives, I would call my program Help Dogs.I decided that pet stores would be really good places to go with donation boxes and Help Dogs flyers (传单).I used little green Chinese take-out boxes, decorated with a picture of Tiko, one of the dogs I chose to help, and me.I wrote on each box “Help protect the lives of dogs by donating a dollar”.I thought my actions might not raise much money for the dogs, but they can at least increase people’s awareness of wild animal protection.
One afternoon, after all the boxes had been distributed throughout our community, I got a call from a local newspaper reporter who had seen one of my flyers. The reporter decided to do an article about Help Dogs. After the article came out, I waited for a few days before checking to see if there were any donations.

范文诠释 教材原文 名师论道
The main argument for factory farming is that, apart from being a lot cheaper than traditional or organic farming, it provides more food for a world population that has already reached seven billion, according to the United Nations. As factory farms do not use many workers, the costs are low and the production is high. Moreover, factory-farmed animals suffer from fewer diseases than those living outside. On the other hand, opponents of factory farming say that it is cruel to the animals. For instance, many farm animals are kept in small spaces where they can hardly move.People who fight for animal rights claim that these animals suffer terrible stress. In addition to this, factory farming has a negative impact on the environment because it creates a lot of waste products, and uses a lot of chemicals to control insects and drugs to treat diseases (UK Farming Today, 2013). To sum up, despite producing cheap food, factory farming is bad for the planet and for the animals themselves. In my opinion, we should try to reduce this kind of farming, although we would have to pay more for our eggs and meat. 【学语言】 (2)第二段使用了a lot cheaper、 more food、 low、 high、 fewer diseases等这些表示比较级的形容词以及反义词,形象地表明了支持工厂化养殖的理由。 (3)第三段在陈述观点时使用了cruel、 small spaces、 suffer terrible stress、 has a negative impact on、 a lot of waste products、 a lot of chemicals等词,形象地表达了反对者的理由;尤其最后一句连续用了两次a lot of来强调工厂化养殖的坏影响。 2.

Factory farming involves keeping farm animals inside buildings
to increase the production of meat or eggs.According to an
institute, “74% of the world’s poultry, 43% of its beef and
68% of its eggs are produced in this way.”
The main argument for factory farming is that, apart from
being a lot cheaper than traditional or organic farming, it provides
more food for a world population that has already reached seven
billion, according to the United Nations. As factory farms do not
use many workers, the costs are low and the production is
high. Moreover, factory-farmed animals suffer from fewer diseases
than those living outside.

释 教材原文
On the other hand, opponents of factory farming say that it is
cruel to the animals. For instance, many farm animals are kept in
small spaces where they can hardly move.People who fight for animal rights claim that these animals suffer terrible stress. In addition to this, factory farming has a negative impact on the environment because it creates a lot of waste products, and uses a lot of chemicals to control insects and drugs to treat diseases (UK Farming Today, 2013).
To sum up, despite producing cheap food, factory farming is
bad for the planet and for the animals themselves. In my opinion,
we should try to reduce this kind of farming, although we would
have to pay more for our eggs and meat.

Ⅰ.阅读理解
Wild bison (野牛) are to return to the UK for the first time in 6,
000 years, with the release of one male and three females in Blean woods
in Kent soon. The £ 1 million project to reintroduce the animals will help
secure the future of an endangered species. But they will also naturally
regenerate a former pine wood plantation by killing off trees.
Populations of the UK’s most important wildlife have greatly
plummeted since 1970.Britain is one of the countries suffering great
species loss in the world, despite the best efforts of protectors.
Paul Hadaway, from Kent Wildlife Trust, said: “The Wilder
Blean project will prove that a wilder, nature-based solution is the right
one to tackle the climate and nature crisis we now face.
“Using missing keystone species (关键物种) like bison to bring
back natural processes to habitats is the key to creating biodiversity in our
landscape.”
Known as “ecosystem engineers”, bison kill selected trees by
eating their bark or using them as a tool to remove their thick winter
fur. This creates a big dead wood dinner for insects, which provide food
for birds.Tree felling also creates sunny clearings where plants can grow
healthily.
The bison will not be given any food or artificial shelters, though
their health will be monitored by observing their coats and examining their
waste.“We need to keep them as wild as possible for the project to
succeed,” said Hadaway. But he said there was no intention to introduce
enemies such as wolves.“It’s increasingly clear that daring and
imaginative rewilding (再野生化) is urgently needed to tackle the
country’s worrying loss of wildlife,” said Rebecca Wrigley,
of Rewilding Britain. She said far more needed to be done across the UK to
reintroduce large animals feeding on plants and let them do their
magic.Hadaway said:“Sometimes in the rewilding debate people think
that it’s a look back to the past, but that’s not what we’re
about. We’re about trying to find the right natural solution for the modern
world.”

  阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构
成一篇完整的短文。
One day my mom and I read a story in a magazine called Humane
Society News.A wild dog named Solo died for lack of medical care after he
was ill.I knew how sad the story was because my own dog, Kela, had
recently died.My world had ended when I lost Kela. She had been my best
friend since I could remember. The article continued to tell about wildlife
rehabilitators. They nursed the sick animals back to health, but as more
and more animals were rescued, the medical expense became a big
burden for them.I immediately determined to do something for them.I
may be a kid, but why can’t I do a fund-raiser to help save more dogs?
My mom thought it was hard for an 11-year-old girl to raise, but she
told me to go ahead and try it anyway.I realized that I needed a name for
the fund-raiser and thought since I was trying to protect dogs’ lives, I
would call my program Help Dogs.I decided that pet stores would be
really good places to go with donation boxes and Help Dogs flyers (传
单).I used little green Chinese take-out boxes, decorated with a picture
of Tiko, one of the dogs I chose to help, and me.I wrote on each box
“Help protect the lives of dogs by donating a dollar”.I thought my
actions might not raise much money for the dogs, but they can at least
increase people’s awareness of wild animal protection.
One afternoon, after all the boxes had been distributed throughout
our community, I got a call from a local newspaper reporter who had seen
one of my flyers. The reporter decided to do an article about Help
Dogs. After the article came out, I waited for a few days before checking
to see if there were any donations.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式作答。
I was really nervous when I finally went to collect the money.
I realized many people feel the same way as I did but didn’t know
how to help.

参考范文:
I was really nervous when I finally went to collect the money.Would
there be anything in the boxes? I wondered.I really wasn’t sure that I
could raise enough money. But when I collected the first box, I couldn’t
believe my eyes. The box was practically overflowing with dollar bills! It
totaled over three thousand dollars! I was so excited and totally amazed at
the amount of money that I had raised.I couldn’t believe it!
I realized many people feel the same way as I did but didn’t know
how to help. Then, just when I had achieved what I thought was my
highest goal, I created a Web page to tell other people how to organize a
fund-raiser like the one that I did.People from all over the country began to
call me to find out how to raise funds to help dogs in their areas. It was a
lot of hard work but I learned that if you just keep going, you can
accomplish anything.
