I. Teaching aims and learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
understand the meanings of the new words from the context;
understand the context;
make a comment on the context.
II. Teaching contents
New words and phrases: confirm; victim; crime; somewhere; contact; wound; bleed; enemy; single; well-paid; charge; break into; system; suppose; only; witness; report; breathe; heavily; reward; arrest.
New structure:
We are asking anyone who saw anything unusual near Corn Street last night to contact us.
We are now checking the scene for more clues which will help solve the case.
The victim’s parents have offered a reward of 50,000 yuan for any information that leads to the arrest of the murderer.
III. Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty
Read the passage in different ways.
Read the context paragraph by paragraph and do some further thinking.
IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Pre-reading
Read the title
What information can you get from the title?
T: Today we are going to learn the reading part of this unit. The title of the text is 25- year-old computer engineer murdered. What information can you get from the title?
What other information do you want to get from the text after reading the title?
T: Think over: What else do you want to know from the text after you read the title? I’ll give you one minute to think about it.
Why was such a young man murdered?
T: From the title, we’ve learnt the victim was only 25 years old. He was so young! Why was such a young man murdered? Do you feel surprised? Discuss in groups and tell me your idea.
(While talking, the teacher can introduce some new words like enemy; suspect etc.)
Step 2 While-reading
Fast reading
T: Please read the article as quickly as possible, and after reading try to answer these two questions:
What does the write want to tell the readers through the article?
Why was the young engineer murdered? Are we sure about it?
Careful reading
(1) Read for new words
T: Do you have any difficulty while understanding the text? Do you have any new words while reading? Take out a pencil and circle the words.
Students read the text.
T: Ask your group member if he or she can help you understand the words. Don’t forget to tell each other why. If you still have any problems, you can ask me for help.
Students discuss with each other.
T: Now, I am going to ask you the meanings of some new words. Try to guess.
Students try to explain.
Read for details

T: In this paragraph, how many questions can you ask after reading? Ask your questions and invite your classmates to answer it.
b. Read P2-5
T: After reading, help the police finish the table below:

(the time of the murder; the place of the murder; the tool of the murder; the reason of the murder)
c. Read P6
T: Now, let’s role play. If you are the suspect, what will you say to the police?
If you are the witness, what will you say to the police?

T: Can you design a poster for the victim’s parents?




Step 3 Post-reading
Help Millie find out the mistakes about the murder.
Further thinking:
What’s your feeling after reading the surprising news from the newspaper?
If you’re a policeman, do you have any good advice to give the citizens in your city?
V. Homework
Retell the news.
Finish the exercises in Period 2 of Unit 8 in the workbook.
