George Schaller is a biologist. He spends most of his life travelling in the wild to study unique wild animals, including the Bengal tiger, the East African lion, the Tibetan antelope, and the panda.
Schaller’s first experience abroad was said to be in Africa in 1959, to study the mountain gorilla (大猩猩) there. After that, he never stopped studying wild animals.Even when he was 82, he still continued his research: he went to South America to study wild species.
But Schaller said he had spent more time in China than in any other country and that he loved working in China. After his book The Giant Pandas of Wolong came out years ago, he left the study of the species to some Chinese scientists.Yet he returned to Changtang, Guangxi year after year to study other wild species there.
When Schaller studied wild animals, he also tried to call on people to protect these species.“Few lawmakers or members of the public read scientific papers or care about them,” he pointed out.So besides writing scientific papers and putting forward proposals to governments, he also tried to present his findings to the public by means of popular science books. The public also responded to the suffering of large and lovely wild animals.“That, in turn, provides protection for all the other species and the habitats in that area,” he said. And he’s glad to find the population of mountain gorillas has recovered and that China has created many national parks to protect animals like pandas.
“As far as I’m concerned, the value of my effort lies in leaving behind young biologists who have worked with me and I will continue training the young,” Schaller said.“I get cheered up all the time.I have seen the progress.”
24.Why did Schaller often go back to China?( )
A.To carry on with his research. B.To enjoy the natural views.
C.To collect materials for his book. D.To work with Chinese scientists.
25.Why did Schaller publish his findings in popular books?( )
A.To make himself better known to the public.
B.To draw people’s attention to protecting wild animals.
C.To discuss proposals for further scientific research.
D.To present the harm human activity does to the wildlife.
26.What does Schaller think is the most meaningful part of his work?( )
A.Easing the suffering of certain wild animals.
B.Having young scientists follow in his footsteps.
C.Building more national parks in more countries.
D.Making the population of mountain gorillas recover.
27.Which of the following words can best describe Schaller?( )
A.Positive and adventurous. B.Generous and creative.
C.Responsible and tireless. D.Concentrated and talented.

Team of scientists at the Smithsonian HN Institution wants to protect endangered-species on Earth by sending the animals’ frozen skin cells to the moon.
Under the plan, cell samples from animals would be kept safe using a method called “cryopreservation”.This is when living cells are stored at extremely low temperatures to stop them from breaking down. There is nowhere on Earth that reaches this temperature naturally. However, on the moon there are craters near the south and north poles that never get any sunlight and are always at -320 ℉ or below.
The team said a special station would need to be built on the moon to store the frozen samples. There are already stations like this on Earth, including the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, but they require resources like electricity, humans, and specific materials. They are also vulnerable to threats including climate change, fire, and flooding. But stations on the moon, like Cellskeptat, would not need humans to keep an eye on them or a power source to keep them cold.
The scientists tested their cryopreservation method and successfully froze cells from a fish. They plan to start by preserving wildlife at risk of dying out.If those species went extinct, their cells could be defrosted and used to create a living clone of the animal. Then they would move on to additional species.“Our final goal would be to cryopreserve most species on Earth,” said Mary Hagedorn.
In addition to the freezing technology, the researchers must also determine how they would transport the wildlife skin cell samples to the moon. The journey would require specially designed packaging that keeps the samples safe while they’re in transportation and also protects them from the harsh conditions of space.
The team said that some of the early tests for the project could be done on the International Space Station, a laboratory orbiting 254 miles from Earth. They are also calling for other scientific institutions to join in their effort and help make it a reality.
28.What is the primary goal of Smithsonian HN Institution’s project?( )
A.To design a biological research center.
B.To study the effects of coldness on skin cells.
C.To protect at-risk species by storing frozen cells.
D.To create a database of endangered creatures.
29.What do we know about Svalbard Global Seed Vault?( )
A.It is easily harmed by weather conditions.
B.It works better than lunar stations alike.
C.It has carried out successful experiments.
D.It depends heavily on natural resources.
30.What does the underlined word “orbiting” in the last paragraph mean?( )
A.Designing. B.Circling.
C.Changing. D.Exploring.
31.What is one of the challenges the team must overcome for this project?( )
A.The quality of frozen cells. B.The number of species at risk.
C.Support from the society. D.Suitable package for transport.

People’s voices frighten wildlife even more than the snarls (低吼) of lions, suggesting that we are the scariest animals.Giraffes, elephants, and more than a dozen other species of animals in a South African wildlife reserve ran away from loudspeakers twice as often when they heard the sounds of humans compared with those of lions, found by a study led by Michael Clinchy at the University of Western Ontario in Canada.
“This is a protected area, so these animals should not be fearful of us,” he says.“But whether you’re a wildlife tourist, or a poacher (盗猎者), or whatever, you’re all going to be seen as the same thing. The presence of humans is equally dangerous, regardless of what type of human you are.”
Clinchy and his colleagues had already discovered that the fear of predators can cause species to decline in number.Wanting to find out which was the most feared, the team decided to test humans against lions often seen as the world’s most fearsome predator on land, says Clinchy.
They set up loudspeakers and cameras on trees 10 meters away from animal paths near 21 waterholes in Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa, which hosts one of the largest remaining lion populations in the world. When animals approached the waterholes, the speakers immediately played back one of four kinds of recordings, all at the same volume. These included men and women speaking calmly in local languages, lions snarling, gun shots with or without barking dogs and the calls of regional birds.
The researchers captured 15,000 videos of 19 species of animals reacting to their recordings. They found that wildlife except lions ran around in response to human voices more than to any other sounds, and were also 40 percent quicker to escape.
The findings highlight the damaging impact that our presence could potentially be having significant ecological results.Even so, the findings could lead to positive outcomes as well.Human voices might prevent wildlife from entering crop fields or farms.
32.Why are some animals fearful of human beings?( )
A.Human beings are the strongest.
B.Human beings make them out of water.
C.Human beings may have caused great damage.
D.Human beings can make the loudest voice in the world.
33.What can be inferred about Greater Kruger National Park?( )
A.There are many lions there.
B.There are 21 waterholes there.
C.It is easy to set up loudspeakers there.
D.It is easy to record the local people’s activities.
34.Which animal responded to human voices least?( )
A.Elephants. B.Giraffes.
C.Lions. D.Dogs.
35.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?( )
A.The advantages of human voices to animals.
B.The damaging impact of human presence.
C.The significant ecological results of human voices.
D.The impact and possible application of human voices.

The fires in many parts of Brazil’s Amazon area have brought an international outcry to save the world’s largest rainforest.36.( ) Actor Leonardo DiCaprio also offered $5 million for efforts to save the forest.
The World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) says the world’s largest rainforest contains millions of species of plants and animals.37.( ) Among the best-known animals are jaguars, eagles, pink river dolphins, parrots, large snakes and many butterflies.
The WWF says the forests contain over 40,000 kinds of plants and the 6,500 kilometers of rivers contain 3,000 kinds of freshwater fish.More than 30 million people live in the Amazon area and depend on the forests for food and shelter.
The rainforest is often called the “lungs of the planet”.38.( ) Carlos Nobre is a University of Sao Paulo climate scientist. He said a better way to think about the Amazon’s role is as a sink, taking CO2 from the atmosphere.
Currently, the world is releasing around 36 billion metric tons of CO2 into the atmosphere every year. And the Amazon absorbs about five percent of the CO2, making it important in preventing climate change.
39.( ) They are mostly set illegally by people who are clearing the forest to raise cattle and crops.
People clear the land by cutting down the trees during the rainy season.40.( ) Fully clearing the thick forest for agricultural use can take several years of cutting and burning.
A.Many of them are still unknown.
B.The fire led to international concern.
C.The current fires in the Amazon are not wildfires.
D.The Amazon rainforest is important to rainfall in the area.
E.Then they let the trees dry out and burn them during the dry season.
F.But that might not be the best way to describe the area’s importance.
G.Wealthy nations have offered Brazil at least $22 million to fight the fires.

My husband and I enjoy seeing life through the eyes of our children. It’s amazing to watch as they discover their world.
While we were outdoors last summer enjoying the sunshine, our oldest daughter, Kaytlin, called me to the doorway.Beneath the steps was a baby red squirrel.
We watched it from a distance, not wanting to disturb it or scare off its mother. But after a long wait, and looking all around our house for signs of a nest or a mother, we realized the tiny squirrel was lost.
Shaking terribly, he was weak, thin, and hungry. We tried to find an expert to help, but the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website showed that there were no wildlife experts in our area. After some quick research, we concluded that the best way to give the squirrel a fighting chance was to care for him ourselves. So a trip to the local store for milk and supplies was in order.More research taught us how much to feed him, how to estimate his age, how and when to wean (断奶) him, and that we should let him go as soon as he could survive on his own.
Our daughters and I took turns feeding “Squirt”.Kaytlin took on the most responsibility. She taught him to eat from a bottle, and she woke in the night for his feeds.
To our relief, Squirt soon became healthy and strong.Within a few weeks he became more active. He would chatter (吱吱叫) for his next meal, playfully go around the girls, and lie down on them for sleep. It wasn’t long before he was weaned onto solid food and reintroduced to the wild.
His first few visits to the great outdoors were funny.Just like a child, he would play in the grass some time and then run back to Kaytlin for safety.Soon she had him climbing trees and finding nest material.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
One day in the trees, Squirt met up with a family of gray squirrels.

One night, Squirt didn’t come back to our house and it rained hard.

M:Not really. It’s all because of my professor. We were asked to turn in a paper on Friday morning, but I haven’t started writing even a single word.
W:Why didn’t you write it?
M:I was very busy these days.I had been preparing for my English exam all the time, so I had no time.
W:Oh, come on.I think you should have a good rest.Let’s enjoy this free Wednesday night.
M:Anne, listen, I really can’t.
W:Are you serious?
M:Yes, you know it means a lot to me.

I spoke to one guest staying in the Elvis Presley room.“I love this hotel,” he said to me.“I wanted to know what Elvis Presley would eat for breakfast and now I know.” That guest eats pancakes and strawberry ice cream every morning, just as Elvis liked to do.On the next table, the Einstein room’s guest is eating cabbage soup! The company plans to open another Fame Hotel in New York next year and there are plans to expand into Europe too.I look forward to staying in the Winston Churchill suite in London!

第四部分
第一节
Nowadays, with the development of society, the number of wild animals is decreasing quickly and some of them are in danger of dying out.
There are many reasons for this.Firstly, some people are still hunting wild animals.Secondly, the habitats of wild animals are being destroyed by human beings.Lastly, the pollution of the environment also leads to the death of wild animals.
What should we do to protect the wild animals? On the one hand, we must make laws to stop hunting wild animals and destroying their habitats. On the other hand, we must take measures to stop pollution.Only in this way can we protect the wild animals better.
第二节
One day in the trees, Squirt met up with a family of gray squirrels. But the family was none too happy about his visit. They scolded and swatted at him.At first Squirt was so unhappy that he avoided them. And then he quickly learned some social skills. He would take some snacks to meet them. For several days he played all day in the trees surrounding our house but came down at bedtime.
One night, Squirt didn’t come back to our house and it rained hard. Our girls fretted. They wanted to seek Squirt. We prevented them because it was too dangerous. But when the sun rose the next day, there was Squirt, begging for food. And that remained the pattern for weeks. The experience was entertaining and heartwarming for our family. In the wild and somewhat silly moments of raising an orphaned baby squirrel, our children learned to value and appreciate life.

George Schaller is a biologist. He spends most of his life travelling in
the wild to study unique wild animals, including the Bengal tiger, the
East African lion, the Tibetan antelope, and the panda.
Schaller’s first experience abroad was said to be in Africa in 1959,
to study the mountain gorilla (大猩猩) there. After that, he never
stopped studying wild animals.Even when he was 82, he still continued
his research: he went to South America to study wild species.
But Schaller said he had spent more time in China than in any other
country and that he loved working in China. After his book The Giant
Pandas of Wolong came out years ago, he left the study of the species to
some Chinese scientists.Yet he returned to Changtang, Guangxi year
after year to study other wild species there.
When Schaller studied wild animals, he also tried to call on people
to protect these species.“Few lawmakers or members of the public read
scientific papers or care about them,” he pointed out.So besides writing
scientific papers and putting forward proposals to governments, he also
tried to present his findings to the public by means of popular science
books. The public also responded to the suffering of large and lovely wild
animals.“That, in turn, provides protection for all the other species
and the habitats in that area,” he said. And he’s glad to find the
population of mountain gorillas has recovered and that China has created
many national parks to protect animals like pandas.
“As far as I’m concerned, the value of my effort lies in leaving
behind young biologists who have worked with me and I will continue
training the young,” Schaller said.“I get cheered up all the time.I
have seen the progress.”

Team of scientists at the Smithsonian HN Institution wants to protect
endangered-species on Earth by sending the animals’ frozen skin cells to
the moon.
Under the plan, cell samples from animals would be kept safe using
a method called “cryopreservation”.This is when living cells are stored
at extremely low temperatures to stop them from breaking down. There is
nowhere on Earth that reaches this temperature naturally. However, on
the moon there are craters near the south and north poles that never get any
sunlight and are always at -320 ℉ or below.
The team said a special station would need to be built on the moon to
store the frozen samples. There are already stations like this on Earth,
including the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, but they require resources like
electricity, humans, and specific materials. They are also vulnerable to
threats including climate change, fire, and flooding. But stations on the
moon, like Cellskeptat, would not need humans to keep an eye on them
or a power source to keep them cold.
The scientists tested their cryopreservation method and successfully
froze cells from a fish. They plan to start by preserving wildlife at risk of
dying out.If those species went extinct, their cells could be defrosted and
used to create a living clone of the animal. Then they would move on to
additional species.“Our final goal would be to cryopreserve most species
on Earth,” said Mary Hagedorn.
In addition to the freezing technology, the researchers must also
determine how they would transport the wildlife skin cell samples to the
moon. The journey would require specially designed packaging that keeps
the samples safe while they’re in transportation and also protects them
from the harsh conditions of space.
The team said that some of the early tests for the project could be done
on the International Space Station, a laboratory orbiting 254 miles from
Earth. They are also calling for other scientific institutions to join in their
effort and help make it a reality.

People’s voices frighten wildlife even more than the snarls (低
吼) of lions, suggesting that we are the scariest animals.Giraffes,
elephants, and more than a dozen other species of animals in a South
African wildlife reserve ran away from loudspeakers twice as often when
they heard the sounds of humans compared with those of lions, found by
a study led by Michael Clinchy at the University of Western Ontario in
Canada.
“This is a protected area, so these animals should not be fearful of
us,” he says.“But whether you’re a wildlife tourist, or a poacher
(盗猎者), or whatever, you’re all going to be seen as the same
thing. The presence of humans is equally dangerous, regardless of what
type of human you are.”
Clinchy and his colleagues had already discovered that the fear of
predators can cause species to decline in number.Wanting to find out
which was the most feared, the team decided to test humans against lions
often seen as the world’s most fearsome predator on land, says
Clinchy.
They set up loudspeakers and cameras on trees 10 meters away from
animal paths near 21 waterholes in Greater Kruger National Park, South
Africa, which hosts one of the largest remaining lion populations in the
world. When animals approached the waterholes, the speakers
immediately played back one of four kinds of recordings, all at the same
volume. These included men and women speaking calmly in local
languages, lions snarling, gun shots with or without barking dogs and
the calls of regional birds.
The researchers captured 15,000 videos of 19 species of animals
reacting to their recordings. They found that wildlife except lions ran
around in response to human voices more than to any other sounds, and
were also 40 percent quicker to escape.
The findings highlight the damaging impact that our presence could
potentially be having significant ecological results.Even so, the findings
could lead to positive outcomes as well.Human voices might prevent
wildlife from entering crop fields or farms.

参考范文:
Nowadays, with the development of society, the number of wild
animals is decreasing quickly and some of them are in danger of dying out.
There are many reasons for this.Firstly, some people are still
hunting wild animals.Secondly, the habitats of wild animals are being
destroyed by human beings.Lastly, the pollution of the environment also
leads to the death of wild animals.
What should we do to protect the wild animals? On the one hand,
we must make laws to stop hunting wild animals and destroying their
habitats. On the other hand, we must take measures to stop
pollution.Only in this way can we protect the wild animals better.
第二节(满分25分)
  阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构
成一篇完整的短文。
My husband and I enjoy seeing life through the eyes of our children. It’s amazing to watch as they discover their world.
While we were outdoors last summer enjoying the sunshine, our
oldest daughter, Kaytlin, called me to the doorway.Beneath the steps
was a baby red squirrel.
We watched it from a distance, not wanting to disturb it or scare off
its mother. But after a long wait, and looking all around our house for
signs of a nest or a mother, we realized the tiny squirrel was lost.
Shaking terribly, he was weak, thin, and hungry. We tried to find
an expert to help, but the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website showed
that there were no wildlife experts in our area. After some quick research,
we concluded that the best way to give the squirrel a fighting chance was to
care for him ourselves. So a trip to the local store for milk and supplies was
in order.More research taught us how much to feed him, how to estimate
his age, how and when to wean (断奶) him, and that we should let
him go as soon as he could survive on his own.
Our daughters and I took turns feeding “Squirt”.Kaytlin took on
the most responsibility. She taught him to eat from a bottle, and she woke
in the night for his feeds.
To our relief, Squirt soon became healthy and strong.Within a few
weeks he became more active. He would chatter (吱吱叫) for his next
meal, playfully go around the girls, and lie down on them for sleep. It
wasn’t long before he was weaned onto solid food and reintroduced to the
wild.
His first few visits to the great outdoors were funny.Just like a
child, he would play in the grass some time and then run back to Kaytlin
for safety.Soon she had him climbing trees and finding nest material.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式作答。
One day in the trees, Squirt met up with a family of gray squirrels.
One night, Squirt didn’t come back to our house and it rained hard.

参考范文:
One day in the trees, Squirt met up with a family of gray
squirrels. But the family was none too happy about his visit. They scolded
and swatted at him.At first Squirt was so unhappy that he avoided
them. And then he quickly learned some social skills. He would take some
snacks to meet them. For several days he played all day in the trees
surrounding our house but came down at bedtime.
One night, Squirt didn’t come back to our house and it rained
hard. Our girls fretted. They wanted to seek Squirt. We prevented them
because it was too dangerous. But when the sun rose the next day, there
was Squirt, begging for food. And that remained the pattern for weeks. The experience was entertaining and heartwarming for our
family. In the wild and somewhat silly moments of raising an orphaned
baby squirrel, our children learned to value and appreciate life.
