Facebook was running my life.
But what killed Facebook for me was when I posted a photo, and five minutes later my son asked me how many “likes” it had got.His question was a wake-up call.
“Likes” are signs of acceptance and approval.I had forgotten that acceptance and approval need to come from within and had unknowingly set him a bad example.
Before absorbed in Facebook, I spent a lot more time reading books and magazines.I checked in with friends through texts, emails and phone calls.
To set a healthier example to my son, I deactivated my Facebook account.
I’d been in the habit of checking Facebook many times a day, so I had to come up with some new habits.I carried a novel and a crossword puzzle book around with me.I rediscovered knitting.I went to the gym to take yoga classes.
I started to remember a few things. My body is fine just the way it is.I have friends who will help me out when I’m in trouble, and I will help them out.I do my best to be a good mother, and our son is happy and healthy. We are very lucky to be able to afford two vacations a year.
I stopped looking at the world through my cellphone.I felt completely present in the moment. The break left me feeling better about myself, my family, my home and my life.
After a few weeks, I returned to Facebook. Now I look at the photos of my friends’ kids growing up and treasure how social media allows me to keep in touch with family.I no longer have the desire to post updates often.
It is not an addiction any more.

Most of us spend our lives surrounded by screens, which offer us convenience as well as connection and an ocean of information. But since it’s easy to feel pressured to keep up with every notification, technology may feel more like a burden than a blessing. Thus, the idea of “digital detox” is becoming increasingly inviting.
The phrase “digital detox” describes getting rid of TV, phones, computers and other forms of technology that control our lives for a period of time. Some experts advocate completely avoiding unnecessary screen time for 30 years.Others suggest using an app that will limit the amount of time one can spend on certain websites.A third option is logging out in evenings or on weekends.Others simply turn their phones off at scheduled times. Some even pay high prices to take vacations in places where they can unplug from their digital routine.
Why might you want to take a digital detox? Perhaps you find that you are spending longer than you intend on certain apps or that they distract you from more important things.Perhaps social media is depressing because you compare yourself to others or you fear missing out on things that other people are enjoying.Constant negative news can also give rise to a lot of stress.
Technology can also have physical effects. Many people experience back or neck pain as a result of bending over screens. The blue light coming from most screens can also affect people’s sleep by preventing production of melatonin (褪黑素).
Giving up all screens may not be realistic (现实的), but strategic breaks from technology may be good for your body, mind, emotions and relationships. It is high time that you picked a time to turn off your devices and focus on really important things.
8.Why does the author say “technology may feel more like a burden than a blessing” in paragraph 1?( )
A.To confirm a concept. B.To present a problem.
C.To explain a rule. D.To make a prediction.
9.What does the underlined word “unplug” in paragraph 2 mean?( )
A.Learn. B.Benefit.
C.Escape. D.Suffer.
10.Which could be the reason for one to start “digital detox”?( )
A.Apps selection difficulty. B.Fear of missing important things.
C.Pressure from social comparison. D.Exposure to false news.
11.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?( )
A.To recommend healthy lifestyles.
B.To present different attitudes to digital products.
C.To give instructions on starting digital detox.
D.To call for reducing the use of digital devices.
Ⅱ.阅读七选五
Is a moviegoer different than a movie-lover? I’d say so.You can love a movie by watching it at home.12.( ).I’ve spent a lot of time talking to people about movies.By listening to what they say, I can report they only share one thing in common: they go out.
I’ve thought about two views of the moviegoer lately.
The first view comes from Roland Barthes. Most often, his moviegoers don’t go to the movies for a distinct purpose.13.( ).They are bored.Once they get inside, they can’t help but sink into a relaxed state. When they leave the movie theater, these moviegoers don’t want to talk to anyone about the movie.14.( ).Barthes sees them as a lonely being, one who is introspective (自省的).I think some of us use movie theaters to retreat inside ourselves.
The second view comes from the Clark Theater manager, Bruce Trinz. When people go to the movies, they go for a certain personal motive. They may want to forget something, or escape from the lives they are leading.Or they may want to see a film they liked years ago.15.( ), they are the hopeless addicts who, quite simply, like movies. The only thing I would challenge in this definition is the word hopeless.16.( ), but they come to the movies filled with hope. They may not be able to define what they hope to experience, but they will know it when they feel it.
A.Whatever motive they have
B.To be a moviegoer, you have to go out
C.The movie also puts them somewhere else
D.They are instead wrapped up in themselves
E.Because moviegoers go in search of beauty
F.Moviegoers may be hopelessly addicted to the movies
G.It’s something to do with a response to leisure, free time

Facebook was running my life.
But what killed Facebook for me was when I posted a photo, and
five minutes later my son asked me how many “likes” it had got.His
question was a wake-up call.
“Likes” are signs of acceptance and approval.I had forgotten that
acceptance and approval need to come from within and had unknowingly
set him a bad example.
Before absorbed in Facebook, I spent a lot more time reading books
and magazines.I checked in with friends through texts, emails and phone
calls.
To set a healthier example to my son, I deactivated my Facebook
account.
I’d been in the habit of checking Facebook many times a day, so I
had to come up with some new habits.I carried a novel and a crossword
puzzle book around with me.I rediscovered knitting.I went to the gym to
take yoga classes.
I started to remember a few things. My body is fine just the way it is.I
have friends who will help me out when I’m in trouble, and I will help
them out.I do my best to be a good mother, and our son is happy and
healthy. We are very lucky to be able to afford two vacations a year.
I stopped looking at the world through my cellphone.I felt completely
present in the moment. The break left me feeling better about myself, my
family, my home and my life.
After a few weeks, I returned to Facebook. Now I look at the photos
of my friends’ kids growing up and treasure how social media allows me
to keep in touch with family.I no longer have the desire to post updates
often.
It is not an addiction any more.

Most of us spend our lives surrounded by screens, which offer us
convenience as well as connection and an ocean of information. But since
it’s easy to feel pressured to keep up with every notification,
technology may feel more like a burden than a blessing. Thus, the idea of
“digital detox” is becoming increasingly inviting.
The phrase “digital detox” describes getting rid of TV, phones,
computers and other forms of technology that control our lives for a period
of time. Some experts advocate completely avoiding unnecessary screen
time for 30 years.Others suggest using an app that will limit the amount of
time one can spend on certain websites.A third option is logging out in
evenings or on weekends.Others simply turn their phones off at scheduled
times. Some even pay high prices to take vacations in places where they
can unplug from their digital routine.
Why might you want to take a digital detox? Perhaps you find that
you are spending longer than you intend on certain apps or that they
distract you from more important things.Perhaps social media is
depressing because you compare yourself to others or you fear missing out
on things that other people are enjoying.Constant negative news can also
give rise to a lot of stress.
Technology can also have physical effects. Many people experience
back or neck pain as a result of bending over screens. The blue light
coming from most screens can also affect people’s sleep by preventing
production of melatonin (褪黑素).
Giving up all screens may not be realistic (现实的), but strategic
breaks from technology may be good for your body, mind, emotions
and relationships. It is high time that you picked a time to turn off your
devices and focus on really important things.

Is a moviegoer different than a movie-lover? I’d say so.You can
love a movie by watching it at home.12.( ).I’ve spent a lot of
time talking to people about movies.By listening to what they say, I can
report they only share one thing in common: they go out.
I’ve thought about two views of the moviegoer lately.
The first view comes from Roland Barthes. Most often, his
moviegoers don’t go to the movies for a distinct purpose.13.
( ).They are bored.Once they get inside, they can’t help but
sink into a relaxed state. When they leave the movie theater, these
moviegoers don’t want to talk to anyone about the movie.14.
( ).Barthes sees them as a lonely being, one who is introspective
(自省的).I think some of us use movie theaters to retreat inside
ourselves.
The second view comes from the Clark Theater manager, Bruce
Trinz. When people go to the movies, they go for a certain personal
motive. They may want to forget something, or escape from the lives
they are leading.Or they may want to see a film they liked years ago.15.
( ), they are the hopeless addicts who, quite simply, like
movies. The only thing I would challenge in this definition is the word
hopeless.16.( ), but they come to the movies filled with
hope. They may not be able to define what they hope to experience, but
they will know it when they feel it.
A. Whatever motive they have
B. To be a moviegoer, you have to go out
C. The movie also puts them somewhere else
D. They are instead wrapped up in themselves
E. Because moviegoers go in search of beauty
F. Moviegoers may be hopelessly addicted to the movies
G. It’s something to do with a response to leisure, free time
