Friendship Day is a great day for celebrating friendship. It falls on the first Sunday of August every year. Celebrating the festival was firstly started by the US in 1935, when the US Congress decided to set a day to honor friends and friendship. Since then, celebration of National Friendship Day became an annual event. The idea of honoring the beautiful friendship was welcomed by the people, particularly the youngsters all over the country. But now this doesn’t only happen in the US. People in other countries are interested in it, too.
The idea of spending the day with friends was spread all over the world. With more and more countries joining in the celebrations, Friendship Day became an international festival.
Between 1935 and 1997, Friendship Day didn’t have a symbol, like Santa Claus for Christmas. However, in 1997, the United Nations named Winnie the Pooh as the world’s Ambassador (大使) of Friendship.
The traditional celebrations include activities such as meeting with friends and exchanging (交换) cards, flowers and gifts. Some people may have parties with their friends. Some may have lunch or dinner together. Others may hang out or go to the movies with friends on this special day. These are popular among all age groups from teenagers to old people.
Although Friendship Day and its celebrations may have changed over the years, the basic idea behind the festival remains the same. People enjoy the moment they spend together and express love and care for their friends. Today, Friendship Day is being celebrated around the globe, across different cultures and social classes.

In the past, many students practiced English with their pen friends—they sent letters to people all around the world. However, we now send emails to others and chat with people who live quite far away on the Internet.
Here’s some advice on chatting with people online:
When you speak to somebody online, start by asking “Yes or No” questions. Use questions such as “Do you like ... ” “Can you ... ” or “Have you ever ... ”. Remember your goal. You are trying to learn about the other person. Think about the things you enjoy and try to find some common ground between you. And share your own experiences to show that you have similar interests. If you only ask questions, you will be like a policeman or a policewoman.
“Listen” carefully. In that way, you can get to know somebody well. When you know him or her well, you will have more to talk about.
Then ask follow-up questions. After you “listen”, use what you “hear” to learn more about that person. Ask questions like “What do you think of ... ” or “What was the most interesting experience ... ”.
Remember some basic rules:
Be patient. Do not try to find a good friend right away.
Be careful. Don’t give any personal information on the Internet, especially your address, telephone number and even your real name. It’s dangerous.

Have you ever experienced buddy (同伴) reading It allows you and a friend to read and share the same book together. It may take the buddies time to do many reading activities, but it’s a wonderful experience. This not only adds to the pleasure of reading, but also helps you have a better understanding of the books.
It is all right to have students take part in buddy reading with same-aged schoolmates, but schools usually pair up (配对) older students with younger ones. Yucai School started such a program in 2023 and has achieved great success.
Thanks to the two-year program, many students from younger to older readers have learned a lot. For example, they learned to be kind and patient when they listened to each other. This experience also makes students get a chance to practice lifelong skill such as communicating with others. A student called Davis said that reading to a younger buddy was really helpful. He became more and more confident (自信的), as he knew he was a role model for someone.
The school also became a closer community. The reading buddies felt closer as they often met each other. The students were always excited when they saw their buddies pass by in the hallway.

A village primary school in Yunnan Province has amazed everyone who knows it. The school with more than 1,000 teachers and students has achieved food self-sufficiency (自给自足) by offering farming for students.
Jingwai Mingde Primary School is made up of five local village primary schools. Since 2008, it has been paying attention to students’ development in an all-around (全方面的) way through labor education. In the process of planting, students gradually feel the hardship (艰难) of farm work and will value the food more in the future.

The school built a greenhouse with fruit trees and medicinal herbs (药草). Besides listening to teachers in the classroom, students are also able to learn about knowledge of plants in nature.
According to headmaster Lei Yingfei, through labor education, students have mastered basic life skills, developed a sense of teamwork, as well as improved their performance of cultural courses. “Children who have not kissed the land will not have a complete childhood. Have you heard about “survival (生存) holidays” It is for children to go into the lonely (荒凉的) place for exciting activities, and their parents don’t go with them. During the activities, other grown-ups are not around them either.
Many parents like “survival holidays” because they think being close to nature is good for children. Many children in big cities spend most time watching TV and playing computer games. “Survival holidays” can make a big difference to their life.
Is “survival holidays” a great idea Maybe it is. Children need more free time to play. And they need to be on their own. Parents like to see their children join in activities, but they think the activities should be controlled (被控制) by grown-ups. Children don’t know what to do when they meet difficulty. Even something like crossing a small river seems to be a hard thing. Children usually don’t know what to do in face of danger. Do you ever feel like you are just running from one activity to another In school, do you rush from one subject to another
When things happen so fast, it is easy to get lost in what you are doing or learning. So it is important to stop yourself every now and then to think about what you’ve been doing or learning.
Self-reflection (反省) means slowing down and calming yourself, including calming your mind. By being calm and going slowly, you give your brain a chance to think about what it has already received. Some people prefer to do these self-reflections diary or written notes. Either method works, depending on your own personal learning.
School textbooks are divided into units of study. This makes it easier for someone to begin self-reflection. Look for time when you complete a unit of study in the subjects you are learning, such as Math, Science and Art. Sometimes you know the unit is over because there is some kind of test. Use these natural breaks to stop and do self-reflection.
Find a quiet place. You can even be sitting at your desk at school when you finish something early and the other students are still working. If you are going to take notes, take out paper or your reflection diary. Write down some notes on the new things that you learned in the unit. Let your mind think about the notes you have written and make some connections.
Next, think about things that you are not sure of. Maybe you learned a new way to work out a math problem, but you’re not sure when to use it. Writing down your questions will help you remember to look for answers the next time you are working with the same topic.
Self-reflection is important for a successful student. If you have never taken the time to do self-reflection, try it now.

The way in which we communicate with others can be greatly improved by building a better vocabulary. In our personal life, we communicate and share experiences with others. However, how well we do it can depend on our ability to express ourselves through spoken and written language. Luckily, increasing our word power can make us own the skills we need to communicate better with others and can also help us get better results in our study.
When you see a new word, whether through reading or hearing someone say the word, just be ready to take out your dictionary and look it up — learn about the word and anything that relates(与……相关) to it. If you understand the word, you’ll hopefully remember it well.
Meanwhile, you’d better write down words to learn. You can go through the dictionary, magazine and newspaper and write down the words that you don’t know. Try to go over them every day—look at the words and speak them out loudly. Copy the words over and over again, along with their meanings, and you will surprisingly remember them in no time.
You can also do word games, such as word searches, crossword puzzles and so on. Playing these games, you are more likely to come across new words, and when you don’t know the words, study them. The more words you have in your brain’s word bank, the better you will become at these word games. You will be remembering, learning and having fun, too.
Finally, reading is also believed to be an excellent way to learn new words and build up your vocabulary. Read things you are interested in, because in this way, you are less likely to become bored. But don’t skip over (忽略) those words you don’t know. Instead, you should remember and use them in your own daily conversations. Use them more, and you’ll surely have a better chance of remembering them.

Making a Basic Pencil Holder
Step 1. Take the label off of a plastic bottle.
The bottle can be any size, shape or colour you want. If you can’t find a plastic water bottle, use a plastic soda bottle instead.
Step 2. Cut the top part off the bottle with a box cutter.
Don’t worry about being too exact. It might be a good idea to cut it a little bit taller than you think you might need it. If you are a child, ask an adult to help you with this step.
Step 3. Use scissors to even out the top.
Keep trimming until you get the height you want, and there are no jagged lines left. Try to make the bottle no shorter than half the height of a standard pen or pencil.
Step 4. Decorate the bottle further to make it beautiful.
Once the bottle is completely dry, add some more colour to it using some stickers, markers, or paint. You can even decorate it with glitter glue pens! If you want to use lighter colours, try paint pens.
Step 5. Finished.
Put your pens or scissors in the bottle.

Do-it-yourself projects let you design your house, providing a way to save money, but even with step-by-step instructions, DIY doesn’t always go as planned. Nearly 80% of homeowners make mistakes while doing DIY. Here are four of the biggest mistakes that homeowners often make.
Costing Too Much
More than 40% of people find DIY projects more difficult and expensive than they thought. By taking on a task that needs more time or skills than you have, you may end up with a big mess and an unfinished project. “It’s important to think about why you want to do DIY and what you’re hoping to get from it,” said Bailey Carson, a home care expert. “If you’re doing it just to save money, you might need to think twice. Without the time, tools, and talent to do it correctly and safely, mistakes may cost you more in the long run (从长远来看) than simply (简单地) paying others to help from the beginning.”
Using the Wrong Tools
A third of people used the wrong tool for DIY projects, which can make the job more difficult and less safe. Many tools are designed for special uses and materials, so if you use them for other tasks, you may get hurt. Always use the proper tools for each project, and make sure you know how to use them.
Not Safety First
DIY mistakes can not only be costly but also dangerous. Of the survey people who once made a big mistake during their DIY projects, 47% said that the mistake led to (导致) serious problems, while 44% started a fire or fell off (从……摔下来) a roof or ladder. Take your time and follow all safety rules when using tools. Remember to wear dust masks, safety glasses, hearing protection or gloves to protect yourself.
Skipping Important Steps
Skipping (跳过) a key step can end up your whole DIY project—and you might not realize it until much later. New furniture (家具) can be very expensive, so many people don’t think they can easily get a new one. 但是,你可以找到便宜的旧家具,不用花费大量金钱。 Then you can use them to make the perfect furniture for your room. Start by going to yard sales or markets, both of those are good places to find furniture. If you don’t find what you want at first, keep looking for it. Then you won’t pay much for your furniture.
Once you find the furniture you want, it’s time to change it. Choose a color that will match the rest of what you have in your room, and then get enough paint in that color to do the job. If your table, desk or chair is wooden, you may choose to use wood stain (着色剂).
Before you start painting, be sure you’re wearing old clothing. If you use paint, you may want to start with primer (底漆). Primer covers up old paint; it also helps the new paint stick to the furniture. After the primer is dry, paint your furniture. Now you have an amazing new look for your room!
