Duncan Jurman became interested in butterflies when he was around 5 years old. He noticed a couple of caterpillars (毛虫) in his backyard and was attracted by the different ways that caterpillars can disguise (伪装) themselves to stay safe in potentially dangerous surroundings. From there, he started to learn more about caterpillars and butterflies.
Jurman believes that butterflies play a crucial role in our ecosystems. They’re very low on the food web, so they support a lot of different species that rely on them. They’re an indicator species for the health of the environment. Once they disappear, everything else is soon to follow.
Jurman’s goal is to transform the landscape of Florida’s Broward County by turning a weedy suburb into a lively butterfly reserve at a time when insect populations are decreasing quickly worldwide. Jurman believes that every flower planted is a potential home and source of food for caterpillars and butterflies. He eventually developed a butterfly-friendly garden in his backyard by researching the different plants that butterflies prefer. He has already raised and released more than 5,000 butterflies from his garden.
Jurman also launched the Bring Butterflies Back campaign to educate people about butterflies and invite them to join his cause of protecting butterflies. He said that a lot of people are surprised to learn that insects are declining at such an alarming rate, largely because the decline has been so gradual. This phenomenon helps to explain why people are unwilling to take meaningful actions to save the environment.
In 2018, Jurman helped to build a butterfly garden at his high school. The garden has had a regenerative effect on the surrounding environment-birds, native lizards, and other insects have returned in great numbers. Other schools have been inspired to start gardens. “I don’t know if we can ever reach the point that we were once at with butterflies, but I think that if everyone gets involved and starts their own garden, they can make their own impact,” Jurman said.
24. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. The food chain of insects. B. The competition between species.
C. The potential danger to butterflies. D. The vital role of butterflies in nature.
25. Why did Jurman create a butterfly-friendly garden
A. To teach people about butterflies. B. To study butterflies’ favorite plants.
C. To increase the number of butterflies. D. To improve the beauty of his backyard.
26. Which shows the phenomenon mentioned in the text
A. People’s unawareness of environmental changes.
B. The impact of human activities on insect habitats.
C. The rapid decline of butterfly populations worldwide.
D. The process of transforming natural landscapes into reserves.
27. What can be inferred from Jurman’s words in the last paragraph
A. More gardens are built to increase the number of other insects.
B. Jurman is pessimistic about the future of the butterfly population.
C. It’s impossible to restore the butterfly population to their previous levels.
D. People’s joint efforts can have a great impact on the butterfly population.

Whether chasing the perfect body or working toward being as fast, strong or capable as possible, fitness cannot stand as an all-round solution for the challenges many of young people face. Especially because it often amplifies (放大) insecurities and limits personal growth, we need to reconsider how much we prioritize it in our lives.
Unhealthy and unrealistic expectations around the social value of physical fitness have long driven us to exercise and carry many harmful side effects. Focusing on exercising to improve physical appearance has been shown to quickly fall into anxiety, depression and low self-esteem. These issues have been significantly more prevalent for younger people than in the past, and have been primarily linked to the increased role of social media in how we sense ourselves compared to others. Worst of all, body dysmorphia (畸形恐惧症) is a deep psychological disorder that arises when people are aware of their flaws (缺陷) in their physical appearance and resolving those flaws.
As body dysmorphia continues to rise, awareness of its negative effects has spread rapidly. In order to develop better health and avoid eating disorders and anxiety, many are turning to new fitness movements focused on performance progress rather than improving physical traits. However, obsessing over improvement and results can often be as problematic as fixation on appearance. Attentiveness toward exercise goals and personal fitness often becomes obsessive, and worsens issues like anxiety and depression while risking overtraining.
Exercise has also been a more widely popular mode of response for young people to improve quality of life and resolve mental health issues. Though research has proven that fitness and exercise make us feel happier, add fulfillment to our lives and relieve stress, experts also caution that exercise cannot be a complete aid to the emotional, social and psychological challenges we face. We must be aware of this fact, and avoid always turning to exercise and fitness as the sole response to such challenges.
If we continue to let ourselves be driven by the belief that completed performance goals, a more capable body, or a slimmer figure are necessary to feel satisfaction in our lives, we will never be able to completely accept ourselves. Yet it is exactly this self-acceptance even if we have glaring issues — that is essential to lasting personal growth, long-term happiness and healthy relationships.
28. How does fitness affect young people according to Paragraph 1
A. It can solve their life challenges. B. It helps reduce the cost of exercise
C. It improves their social relationships. D. It may make them feel more insecure.
29. What does Paragraph 2 mainly discuss
A. Bad diet habits harm young people’s health. B. Exercise for looks brings harmful results.
C. Young people’s interest in training declines. D. Social media spreads the influence of fitness
30. How is the passage organized
A. Claim — Reason — Warning — Conclusion B. Concept — Background — Comparison — Prediction
C. Question — Experiment — Data — result D. Description — Dialogue — Story — Ending
31. What can we know from the passage
A. Self-acceptance serves as the foundation for well-being.
B. Fitness alone always ensures joy and success.
C. Training goals can remove all possible risks.
D. Modern youth care little about body image.
D
The increasing frequency of rocket launches is crowding the region of space closest to Earth, known as low-Earth orbit — a zone that is already peppered with tens of thousands of bits of decades-old hardware. Experts warn that the danger posed by all this space junk is rising sharply. In recent years, debris has fallen on countries across the globe. Aside from falling to Earth, objects may also smash into each other in orbit, generating even more debris (碎片). Scientists also point to the potential danger to commercial aviation, as well as the pollution caused by debris burning up in the atmosphere.
To tackle the growing problem, various strategies have been put forward for cleaning up low-Earth orbit. A Japanese company recently debuted a prototype for a kind of “space garbage truck” that it hopes can retrieve (取回) inactive satellites from orbit. A Swiss company cooperating with the European Space Agency is planning similar retrieval missions. Another solution, in the short term at least, is to boost objects to higher orbits, where they lead to less of a danger. In 2022, a Chinese mission boosted an inactive BeiDou navigation satellite into a higher and less crowded zone.
A longer-term solution would involve recycling such objects—and some of that recycling can happen in orbit, astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell says. “At some point we’re going to have to move from disposing of old satellites in the atmosphere to taking them to recycling stations where their parts get reused for new satellites, and we actually do some of the manufacturing (制造) in orbit.” Moriba Jah, a space scientist, calls this the “circular space economy”, and the European Space Agency suggests it can be achieved by 2050.
Another seemingly simple idea is to make satellites more durable. “The message that I keep trying to deliver to anybody who will listen is: We need to have fewer satellites with longer operational lifetimes,” says astronomer Samantha Lawler. “Anything that you can do to make your satellites last longer and to use fewer of them — that is the engineering challenge that we are now facing, and I don’t see anyone really taking that up.”
32. The word “peppered with” in the first paragraph probably means ______.
A. separated with B. protected with C. filled with D. cleaned of
33. What solution is mentioned as a short-term measure to deal with space junk
A. Developing “space garbage trucks”. B. Launching objects to higher orbits.
C. Recycling old space objects. D. Reduce rocket launches.
34. What is Samantha Lawler’s suggestion about ______.
A. Potential application of satellites. B. Choice of new launching technology.
C. Possible direction for further cooperation D. Need to improve engineering.
35. What is the main idea of the passage
A. The causes of space junk and its effects on earth.
B. Different strategies to solve the problem of crowded low-Earth orbit.
C. The development of space technology in different countries.
D. The importance of international cooperation in space exploration.

A young woman was waiting for her flight at an airport. She was leaving for London because she got a new job there. It was said that her new boss was a typical English gentleman — polite, modest, humorous and considerate. She was excited as well as a little nervous about her new life.
With several long hours before her flight, the woman hunted for a book in the airport shops, bought a packet of cookies and found a place to sit. She took out a book and started to read. Although she was absorbed in her book, she happened to see that the man sitting beside her, as bold as he could be, grabbed a cookie or two from the bag in between them. Educated to be well-mannered, she tried to ignore it to avoid an argument. But to show that she was the owner, she started to take cookies from that bag too. Unfortunately, the man didn’t get that hint, since he didn’t stop grabbing the cookies.
“How annoying!” she thought. As the greedy cookie thief kept eating, the woman munched (用力咀嚼) some cookies and watched the clock.
She was getting angrier as the minutes went by, thinking, “If I weren’t so nice, I would blacken his eyes.” With each cookie she took, he took one, too; when only one was left, she wondered what he would do.
With a smile on his face, and a nervous laugh, he took the last cookie and broke it in half. He offered her a half, and ate the other. She grabbed it from him, glared at him and thought, “Oh, brother. This guy has some nerve and he is so rude! Why didn’t he even show any gratefulness ”
She had never known when she had been so angry, and sighed in relief when her flight was called. She gathered her belongings and headed to the gate quickly, refusing to look back at the rude thief. She boarded the plane, sank in her seat, and looked for her book, which was almost complete.

【原文】When we talk about Urban planning, we must consider multiple factors. One aspect is the population. Understanding the population size structure and growth trends is crucial. For example, a city with rapidly increasing population, such as Dubai, needs to plan for sufficient housing and schools. In contrast, an aging population like in Tokyo calls for more nursing homes, senior friendly public spaces and accessible healthcare services. Another important factor in Urban planning is sustainable transportation in many modern cities, like London, the over-reliance on private cars has led to traffic jams and environmental pollution. To deal with this, more and more cities are investing in public transportation systems. However, simply building more public transportation isn’t enough. We also need to improve the last mile problem. This refers to the difficulty of getting from the public transportation stop to the final destination. Solutions like bike-sharing programs and electric bike rental are emerging to address this issue. Additionally, social facilities such as schools and public spaces are essential to enhance the quality of life for residents and contribute to the overall well-being of the community. In conclusion, Urban planning is a complex process that requires a comprehensive consideration of population, transport and economic environmental and social factors.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
As she reached in her baggage, she gasped (喘气) with surprise. She took it out carefully and was surprised to see her own packet of cookies. At that moment the woman was so ashamed that she covered her face with her wide-open mouth, and for an instant she blushed. The plane seemed to stop there rooted to the spot. “Why had I ridiculously considered him a cookie thief I owe him a sincere apology,” she thought. Just as she was blank in her head, suddenly, a soft and clear voice, “Excuse me, Lady,” woke her up to the real world. Instinctively she glanced back to see who he was.
Paragraph 2:
Surprisingly, she found the man sitting right behind her. It was the man who, she thought, was rude and ate her cookies, smiling at her. She lowered a bit of her body shamefully, hesitated for a moment and introduced herself nervously. After further communication, she was surprised to find that the gentleman was her new boss in London. She was struck dead with embarrassment with her heart beating painfully fast and banging against her ribs. All the air seemed to be frozen, and she felt as if the whole world were watching her. Seeing her embarrassment and nervousness, the considerate boss patiently calmed her down and asked her to discuss her new job in advance. “What a coincidence! What an unforgivable mistake!” she thought.
