Why are the two sentence complex sentences instead of compound sentences
“Before” 和“If”属于从属连词 (subordinate conjunction),引导状语从句,虽然有两个主谓结构,但并非为两个并列的句子,而是一个主句一个从句,因此这两句都是主从复合句(complex sentence)。

Working out the rules
A simple sentence is made up of one independent clause which has one subject-verb combination
A compound sentence contains two or more main clauses. We use linking words such as (1) ,or ,(2) ,so or for to link the clauses.
A complex sentence contains one main clause(主句) and at least one subordinate clause(从句). A subordinate clause can be the subject, predicative, object, attributive or adverbial of the sentence.
