What Is a Soup Kitchen
A soup kitchen is a place where free food (usually soup and bread) is served to the homeless without judgment or discrimination(歧视). These places are usually run by charitable(慈善的) or religious organizations and staffed by volunteers. In reality, however, a soup kitchen is so much more than that.
What Does a Soup Kitchen Do
Soup kitchens have become a place of refuge (避难所) for those less fortunate souls. It gives them hope that all is not lost and there are still people who care for them. Here, they are not judged, discriminated against, or made to feel like they’re worthless. Instead, they are cared for and treated as equals.
The most important thing a soup kitchen does, however, is providing the homeless with a sense of belonging. For someone who doesn’t have a place of their own, this is a big deal.
How Do Soup Kitchens Help the Community
Throughout history and in most cultures, the sharing of food to the less fortunate is a common practice. Society has always felt a moral obligation(道德义务) to help its most vulnerable(脆弱的) members.
Not only does it encourage charity, but it also brings the community together. It helps break social boundaries as rich and poor, young and old gather together to share a meal. More importantly, it teaches young children the importance of empathy(同理心).
Why Is a Soup Kitchen Called a Soup Kitchen
Since ancient times, charitable organizations have been serving soup to the poor and hungry. A hot soup can be very filling, making it the ultimate(最终的) food choice for relief organizations with limited resources. Then during the Great Depression, these types of food assistance places became more well-known in the US. People would line up in these places (which usually featured large kitchens) to get their daily ration(定量) of soup and bread. And that’s how the term “soup kitchen” came about.

It’s often said that people who are born blind or lose their sight, especially when young, can touch, taste, smell, and hear better than those who can see. Donna Posont, who is blind, helps others use their enhanced hearing(增强的听力) to detect(探测) thousands of bird songs.
Posont is a graduate of the University of Michigan-Dearborn. She leads a monthly program she founded at the college. It’s called Birding by Ear and Beyond. It’s held on Saturday each month. During the program, Posont leads visually-impaired(视力受损的) people through 120 acres(英亩) of campus forest. They listen for the sounds of many birds. These include crows, geese, chickadees, woodpeckers, robins, and red-winged blackbirds.
Participants learn to tell the sometimes subtle differences between bird species(物种). They also learn how each bird fits into their habitat(栖息地). “The world is designed for sighted people(视力正常的人), but nature is a special place where it’s okay to be blind,” Posont told The Washington Post. “You can use your other senses to learn why birds and nature are important and how it all works (as one). To me, that’s the beauty of it.”
Through her program, Posont not only helps visually impaired individuals connect with nature but also inspires them to challenge their perceptions(认知) and embrace the world through a different point. The ability to identify birds by ear becomes a gateway(门户) to understanding the relationships within ecosystems(生态系统) and the value of nature.
What does Posont’s program focus on
Helping blind people identify birds by sound.
Leading blind people to protect campus forest.
Training blind people to be nature guides.
Providing blind people a safe outdoor space.
25. Why does Posont think nature is a special place for blind people

China has become the world’s largest producer and market of EVs(电动汽车). According to a report, 9.58 million Chinese-made EVs were produced and 9.49 million were sold in 2023. Among the total sales, 1.2 million EVs were exported(出口).
The Chinese government has been encouraging EVs as part of its effort for green, high-quality development. As a result, China’s EV industry develops very quickly. At Auto(汽车) China 2004, BYD was the only company showing EVs there. At Auto China 2024, there were 278 different EV models on show, including BYD, SAIC, Geely, Li Auto, Nio, Xpeng and other brands(品牌).
China’s EV industry is now facing both challenges and chances. It’s reported that 71% of EV brands cut prices in 2023. EV makers without the ability of innovation(创新) will face growing risks. In order to be both green and smart, Chinese EV makers are trying hard to improve technologies like battery quality and AI support. At the same time, the government is adding even more charging points(充电站). On the other hand, more Chinese people are aware of the environmental problems. It is encouraging more buyers to choose EVs.
EVs are the way of the future. In an ideal world, everyone benefits from innovation and green transport. Some might get there sooner than others, and will gain greater rewards. It is very likely that China will hold the lead.

In recent years, the concept of “slow travel” has appeared as a reaction to the fast-paced tourism that dominates(主宰) the industry. Slow travel encourages travelers to engage deeply with local cultures, stay longer in destinations, and form meaningful connections with local communities.
One of the key principles(原则) of slow travel is to reduce environmental impact(影响). By choosing to stay in locally-owned accommodations(住宿), eating at family-run restaurants, and using public transportation or bicycles, travelers can greatly decrease their carbon footprint. For instance, a study found that tourists who engage in slow travel produce up to 70% less greenhouse gas emissions(排放) compared to those on traditional package tours.
Slow travel also allows for a deeper cultural understanding. Instead of rushing through tourist attractions, slow travelers take the time to participate in local traditions, learn about historical importance, and interact with locals. This not only enriches the travel experience but also provides economic benefits to local communities. In some rural areas, “slow travel” has helped preserve(保存) endangered crafts(工艺) and save dying traditions.
However, slow travel is not without challenges. It requires more planning and flexibility(灵活). As travelers need to research local customs, transportation options, and authentic(真实的) experiences. Additionally, slow travel may not be feasible for everyone due to time or budget(预算) limit. For busy professionals or families with limited vacation days, spending weeks in a single destination may seem unrealistic.
Despite these challenges, the slow travel movement continues to grow. Travelers are becoming more aware of their environmental and cultural impact, and many are seeking more authentic and sustainable(可持续的) ways to explore the world. As a result, travel companies are starting to offer more slow-travel options, such as longer home-stays and cultural experience programs.
Which is the benefit of slow travel
A. It can save money on traveling.
B. It can be more environmentally friendly.
C. It can increase the income of travel companies.
D. It can allow travelers to visit more places hurriedly.
33. What can we learn about slow travel from the third paragraph
A. It has little impact on local economies.
B. It focuses on interactions with travelers.
C. It discourages travelers from learning about history.
D. It may contribute to the preservation of traditional crafts.
34. What does the underlined word “feasible” mean in the fourth paragraph
A. Attractive. B. Comfortable. C.Classical. D. Practical.
35. What can be inferred about the future of slow travel
A. It will cost less as time passes.
B. It will only be affordable for rich travelers.
C. It may become more popular in the future.
D. It will take the place of traditional tourism entirely.

School days mean homework, studying, exams, and social interactions(互动) — not to mention getting up early every morning. It’s understandable if you don’t always feel your happiest going to school during the week. 36 The following tips can help you feel happier on school days.
Focus on the good things about school. 37 Think about the bigger picture and how your education will have a positive impact on your life in the long run. If you’re having a bad day, tell yourself that you only have to be in school for a relatively short period of your life. After that, the sky is the limit!
Do something nice for someone. Making other people smile can improve your own happiness. 38 Or, thank a teacher for a fun activity or an interesting lesson. If you see someone else that looks like they might be feeling down, tell them you like their hair style or praise the work they have done.
39 If someone isn’t nice to you at school, it’s probably not your fault. Try to remember that nobody is perfect and think about what might be going on in their lives that makes them act negatively(消极地) towards you. Try your best to sweep away a dirty look or a bad comment and move on without getting angry and upset.
Reward yourself. Once you get that big A on your exam or work, don’t forget to go out and celebrate! It’s always great to reward yourself when you do something good especially when it will benefit your future in so many ways! Always believe that you can and you will go a long way! No one can change your future except you. 40
A. Smile more often.
B. Try not to take negativity from others too serious.
C. But it’s also something you can totally improve!
D. Give another student some positive encouragement.
E. Do the best of what you have, and try to have some fun along the way.

Italian artist Jacopo Della Ragione’s works on display in Beijing have attracted many visitors. Jacopo was born in Florence in 1976, the art capital of Italy. Jacopo showed a strong interest in art in his childhood. While studying at the University of Milan, Jacopo took a master’s course in graphic design and printing technology. Before coming to China, Jacopo knew almost nothing about it. With a strong curiosity about this country, Jacopo moved to Beijing in 2001. “I planned to spend two weeks knowing about China, but later I found the time was far from enough, and I’ve been here for more than 20 years until now,” Jacopo said. He created some paintings with traditional colors to show his love for traditional Chinese culture. The happiest time for Jacopo was after enjoying his artworks, some visitors who didn’t understand art began to show interest in it and realized art is part of their life. Having lived in China for more than two decades, Jacopo said he was amazed by the country’s rapid development. Now, he has put down roots in Beijing. “China and Italy have something in common — we both value family. I was born in Italy and live in China. A Self-Discovery Journey at “Know Yourself”
Aimed at guiding freshmen in gaining a deeper understanding of themselves and promoting mental well-being, a series of activities themed “Know Yourself” were held by our school’s Psychology Club last Saturday in the school library, with the participation of psychology teachers, club members and students interested in self-exploration.
As scheduled, a variety of events were well organized, ranging from a lecture on understanding personality traits given by a psychology teacher to small-group discussions where we shared daily troubles. What impressed me most was the psychological test session. Through the carefully designed questions, we got a clearer picture of our strengths and weaknesses. However, it was the “sincere self-introduction” part that pushed the activity to a new height, where heartfelt introductions and sharing of personal stories were so inspiring and empathy-evoking.
This activity turned out to be a great success and was highly thought of by every participant.
