第二部分:阅读(共两节,9活满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A, B, C, D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
Brighton is one of the most untraditional cities in the UK. Here are four of the best things to do in Brighton.
Go to one of the city's old-styled bars (酒吧)
Whatever you’re in Brighton for, checking out the old-styled bars is a must-do while you’re there. The place to start is the Twisted Lemon's cocktail hour. Though the bar itself is small, the menu is not, with pages and pages of award-winning cocktails. It is a great place for conversation over some drinks.
Find a bargain in the North Laine
The best of the North Laine is Snoopers Paradise. It is a flea (跳蚤) market with over90 unique sellers, selling everything from shoes to beautiful Tiffany lamps. It's almost impossible to walk out without buying something or without having spent an hour in there.
Explore Kemptown
If you're looking to experience the “bohemian” style Brighton is famous for, Kemptown is the place. Kemptown Bookshop is a great place to find any new book you need in a quiet, friendly shop. At night the area is livelier though, with a lot of famous bars. You can head to the Hobgoblin for a lively feeling.
Visit the Sea Lanes
The Sea Lanes are a newly rebuilt area, with a six-lane (泳道) swimming pool by the sea. The idea of the pool is to allow people to swim at all times of the year, as, sometimes, weather conditions can mean the sea is too unsafe to swim in. After you finish, there is a bar you can relax in.
1. What is special about Twisted Lemon
A. It offers good cocktails. B. It has a small menu.
C. It has won awards. D. It holds talk shows.
2. Where can a visitor buy a second-hand book
A. Twisted Lemon. B. Snoopers Paradise.
C. Kemptown Bookshop. D. Sea Lanes.
3. What do Kemptown and the Sea Lanes have in common
A. They are crowded and noisy. B. They are designed for kids.
C. They have places for drinking. D. They provide a year-round pool.
B
The student arrived early sat front and centre, and stood out in my classroom in more ways than one. I’d say that he was about 40 years older than his classmates in my undergraduate communications class. He hungrily jumped into class discussions, with his humor and wisdom of experience. And he was always respectful of the other students’ opinions, as if each of them were a teacher. Jerry Valencia walked in with a smile, and he left with one too.
“These students gave me the confidence that I didn’t need to feel bad about my age,” Valencia says.
One day I met Valencia on campus. He said he would have to stop taking classes that semester and reapply for next year. By then, he hoped to have made enough money for school. He asked seriously whether he could still sit in on my communications class.
“Sure! But you wouldn’t get any credit,” I said. “No problem!” he replied.
Soon there he was again, back at his old desk, jumping into our discussions — a 63-year-old man with as much energy and curiosity as any of the young students in class.
A lot of Valencia’s classmates obviously knew he couldn’t afford that semester’s tuition (学费) but was still doing the homework. “Here he is, willingly taking a class for the delight of it and benefit of learning,” says Jessica Espinosa, a 25-year-old junior. Afterwards, I heard Valencia wanted to stay in school to get a four-year degree and then a master’s, but it had taken him 12 years to finish community college, so he had a long way to go.
At his present pace, he’ll be 90 when he finally hangs all that paper on the wall. But that doesn’t seem worrying. He’s found all the youthful energy and learning opportunity encouraging. Valencia’s grade in my class this semester will not show up on his transcripts (成绩单). But I’m giving him an A — and in the most important ways, it matters.
4. What made Valencia different from his classmates
A. He was respectful to the teacher.
B. He gave confidence to his classmates.
C. He was anxious to learn despite his age.
D. He often stood up in my classroom in many ways.
5. According to the author, why did Valencia continue to attend classes
A. He treasured the chance of learning.
B. He wished to show his determination.
C. He needed the credits to further his study.
D. He wanted to have an A on his transcripts.
6. Which of the following best describes Valencia
A. Powerful and independent. B. Energetic and generous.
C. Positive and determined. D. Considerate and knowledgeable.
7. What can we learn from the passage
A. No pains, no gains. B. It is never too old to learn.
C. Strike the iron while it is hot. D. Where there is life, there is hope.
C
“The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” When it comes to device addiction, this may very well be the case. If you believe that how you engage with your smartphone has no impact on your children, think again.
One study looked at 200 families and noted that the children of parents with phone addictions were much more likely to have behavior issues. In short, this obsession led to “technoference” or interruption of everyday interactions between parents and kids. In some cases, this interruption happened in face-to-face conversations, and in other cases, the devices disrupted playtime or meals. When this type of “technoference” occurred, parents rated their children as displaying more behavior problems, including whining, losing temper, sulking (生闷气), and becoming frustrated.
In addition, according to children development experts, there are bilateral signaling systems that occur between adults and children, aiding the construction of the basic architecture of the brain. For example, infants and toddlers are highly engaged with the vocal cues of their parents that tend to happen with simplified grammar, a high-pitched tone, and exaggerated enthusiasm. This mode of relational conversation is incredibly important to a child’s development.
With the arrival of smartphones, many parents are distracted and stuck in what experts are calling “continuous partial attention” mode. This leads to significant and recurring disruptions to the parent-child conversation flow, which can impair not only a child’s language learning ability but also their school achievements overall.
While your habit may seem harmless, your kids may actually be imitating your behavior and forming a dependence of their own. One study reported that some teenagers may spend up to 12 hours— half of an entire day— online and mindlessly swiping through social media apps without engaging in any one piece of content beyond a few seconds.
As a parent, the best thing you can do is lead by example. Try to limit time spent with technology, especially when it diverts (牵制) your attention from other priorities. Shut down smartphones at dinner. Set aside phone-free time each day to engage with your children without the distraction that technology brings. While you may not be able to completely cut ties with new modes of communication, you can be sure that your children get the one-on-one time they need to develop into healthy, happy adults.
8. Why does the writer start the passage with the quote “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”
A. To provide evidence of device addiction.
B. To stress children will follow parents’ example.
C. To highlight the final solution to device addiction.
D. To show the close bond between parent and children.
9. What does the underlined word “obsession” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. A basic and simple need. B. A short and occasional habit.
C. A strong and unhealthy interest. D. A weak and controllable feeling.
10. What’s the purpose of Paragraph 3
A. To support the argument for a child’s addiction to devices.
B. To further scientifically explain a child’s behavioral problem.
C. To present background information for the topic of the passage.
D. To give an argument for the problem of a child’s language learning ability.
11. What does the writer suggest parents do in the last paragraph
A. Value the communication over daily meals.
B. Show expected behavior through their own actions.
C. Focus on improving their children’s communication skills.
D. Allow children to use smartphones during the one-on-one time.
Going from middle school to high school can be difficult, as students are faced with new academic (学业的) and social challenges. Before the first day of high school, there are things every soon-to-be high school freshman and their families should know.
People who have a fixed mindset (思维倾向) believe that they are born to be great or weak. On the other hand, people that have a growth mindset believe that their greatness or weakness is because of their own actions. I totally agree that students should have a growth mindset. I don’t expect any student to move from just passing a subject to an A+. It’s going to take time and focused effort; just keep working on it.
Parents should prepare students to fight the battle “on the pillow” and “in the kitchen”. When I say “pillow” I mean sleep. Not having enough sleep can have some surprising effects on students, including improper behavior, anxiety and poor grades. The second weapon (武器) is eating healthy and balanced meals. Studies show that students who eat nutritious meals and who exercise 60 minutes a day remain more attentive during the school day and experience improved academic achievement and grades. This last “secret” weapon is not to have over-scheduled (安排过度的) time. Make sure students know how to set realistic plans and how to say no to tasks and activities that aren’t important to them.
A lot of students know each other from primary and middle school. They are in their “comfort zones”, feeling they have a sense of control over and expectation of their relationships. But come the first real day of high school, that will all change. The reason I encourage high school freshmen to step out of their comfort zones, though often scary, is that comfort zones get boring and there are many kinds of people to get to know. Let’s encourage them to get involved, have fun and play.
12. Which of the following represents (代表) a fixed mindset
A. I’m at the starting point of my ability. B. My mother is not good at chemistry either.
C. I should start studying a little earlier next time. D. It’s okay if I fail; at least I’ve learned something.
13. What might the author encourage parents to do
A. To prepare healthy meals for their kids.
B. To praise their kids when they do well in school.
C. To take their kids to visit their grandparents often.
D. To buy soft pillows for their kids to have a good rest.
14. What is the third weapon mainly about
A. Enjoying good health. B. Owning the ability to say no.
C. Balancing schoolwork and play. D. Developing time management skills.
15. Which one is the best title of the passage
A. Making friends in High School
B. Academic Challenges in High School
C. Differences between Middle School and High School
D. Preparations for High School: What you need to know

When traveling, many find themselves in places where the local language is unfamiliar. Once, travelers relied on phrasebooks, but the spread of English has reduced this need. These apps allow users to speak into their phones and receive spoken translations almost instantly, bridging language gaps effectively.
____17____ Google Translate, a well-known name, often makes mistakes. While AI tools make travel easier, some worry they discourage language learning. Douglas Hofstadter, a language expert, argues that relying on machines for communication robs people of meaningful experiences and accomplishments. However, others believe most people don’t need fluency for casual travel. ____19____
As AI translation gains popularity, people may divide into two groups: those eager to learn languages for cultural experience and mental challenge, and those who see it as unnecessary effort. This issue is particularly pressing for English speakers, as many schools in English-speaking countries reduce foreign language programs. ____20____ Direct communication, even if imperfect, brings up deeper connections than relying on technology.
A. Yet these tools aren’t perfect.

A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people rarely visited. The house was very old and shabby (破旧的) and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out, he would not say hello to his neighbors or passers- by but simply just glare at them.
The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy’s parents told him to stay away from the house, and a lot of the other neighborhood children were told the same thing from their parents.
As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. “What do you want ” the old man said impatiently. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota (份额) to meet for school with selling the magazines. So he got up the courage and said, “Uh, sir, I am selling these magazines and uh, I was wondering if you would like to buy one from me.”
The old man just stared at the boy without a word. The boy could see inside the old man’s house and saw that he had dog figurines (小雕像) on the fireplace (壁炉) mantle (覆盖物). “Do you collect dogs ” The little boy asked. “Yes, I have many collections (收藏品) in my house. They are my family here and they are all I have.” The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul.
“Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much.” The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, “No, boy. I don’t need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye.”
The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt.
