Most people felt tired and many of them were in bad health because of the lifestyle. But in 1984, a local man, Carlos Mario Montoya, had the idea that the city should not just celebrate the prosperity of business, but also should slow down and enjoy life. So, the World Day of Laziness came out. The daylong celebration of relaxation has been held every year since 1985 in this small city of about 200,000 people.
On that day, people bring out their beds on the streets and take a good sleep. It is time to stop doing chores and other events. Just lie down and relax. Activities on that day include a competition for the best-looking nightwear, a pillow (枕头) show, and a race for the fastest bed on wheels.

Different weather makes people feel different. It influences people's health, intelligence(智力) and feelings.
In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems. In the Northeast, it is very hot at some times and very cold at other times. People in these places have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.

Students in many school of the United States often get worse grades on exams in the hot months of the year.
Weather also has a strong influence on people's feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel very cold during these months. So they might feel unhappy during cold winter. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer.

Children s lives have changed greatly over the last 40 years. I have four brothers and sisters. We used to play board games in the living room and spend days in the street with friends, and ride bikes to tour around the town.
These days, in the UK, the nature of childhood has changed greatly. Firstly, families are getting smaller, as more and more families have only one child. It s common for both parents to work outside, and it seems that no one could possibly afford(付得起) to have more than one child. As a result, today s children spend much of their time alone. Another great change is that children today spend a lot of their free time at home. That s because parents worry about real or imagined dangers, so they wouldn t let their children play outside by themselves. Finally, the way children play is completely different. Almost every home has at least one computer and many children have a mobile phone. Mobile games have replaced board games and other interesting activities of my childhood. However, the fact is that playing mobile games alone can make people feel lonelier.

What are the basic ingredients (要素) of good manners A strong sense of fairness is one of them.
A friend once told me an experience that he had. When he was driving along a one-lane (单行小路), unpaved (未铺路的) mountain road, the car ahead of his produced clouds of choking dust (呛人的尘土), and it was a long way to the nearest paved main road. Suddenly, the car ahead stopped at a wider place on the road.
My friend thought there must be something wrong with the car ahead. He stopped and asked if anything was wrong. "No," said the other driver. "But you've endured my dust so far. I'll endure yours the rest of the way."
Another ingredient is empathy (同情心). It makes a person see into the mind or heart of someone else. Recently I happened to read such a story in a book.
A man was having dinner alone, and he was trying to open a bottle. But he failed. Then he asked a waiter for help. The waiter took the bottle, turned his back and opened it without difficulty. Then the waiter closed it again and turned back. He pretended (假装) to make a great effort to open the bottle without success. Finally he took it into the kitchen and returned very soon. He told the man that he managed to open it, but only with a tool.
Yet another ingredient is the ability to treat people alike (一视同仁). No matter who he is and what he does, everyone is worth respecting.

A tree has roots. People have roots too. If you get to the root of a problem, you will solve it. It's the same thing with words. Dig deeply into a big, unfamiliar word and you will understand where it came from.
As readers, especially those reading in a second language, we need to deal with the text as if we were detectives (侦探) looking for information to unlock the unknown. Like any good detective arriving on the crime scene, the first thing to do when meeting a new and difficult word is to judge the situation, to look at everything that is known and see if it helps us to understand what it means.
As you know, prefixes (前缀) and suffixes (后缀)can be added to the beginning or end of words to change the meaning. Know them, and you will have the word building power. But root words are the key. Take time to learn a few of these, put them in your memory, and you will become a master word detective.
Let's look at one common root word used in English. "Alter" from the Latin word means "other". When you meet this root word, you know that the bigger word has something to do with "other". Examine the word "alternate". Can you find the Latin root in it
·If you and your friend like to eat out, first you pay and the other pays the next time. You are alternating paying. ·If you go to the movies on alternate Saturdays, you go on one Saturday, but not the other Saturday. ·If you have no alternative, you have no other choice.
Learn as many root words as possible in the language you are studying. Then use your "rooting for words" skills. Like any new skill, practice and hard work are always paid back.
34.What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. The situation. B. The crime scene.
C. A new and difficult word. D. Everything that is known.

A. My brother is my senior by two years.
B. He was ill so he was absent from school.
C. A criminal was sentenced to death by law.
D. 60 students were present at the sports meeting.
37.Which of the following shows the structure(结构)of the passage (①=Paragraph 1 ②=Paragraph 2, ...)

古人的浪漫——折柳寄情
In ancient China, willow branches(柳枝) were often used as a gift to friends and family members who would leave. Do you know why willow branches are a symbol of saying goodbye
One reason is that willow trees are strong. They can live in any soil, wet or dry, north or south. Because of this special feature, when saying goodbye to loved ones, giving a willow branch is a way to tell them you hope they will easily get used to their new living environment.
Another reason is that, in Chinese, the pronunciation of the willow tree "柳" is similar to that of the character "留". So giving a willow branch in ancient China was like asking the others to stay, even though you know that they must leave.
It s said that this custom became popular during the Han Dynasty. At that time, Baqiao, a bridge in Chang an, today s Xi an, was a common place to say goodbye. People often stopped there and handed willow branches to-people who were going to depart.

"Made in China" is having its moment now—and it's a fashionable one.
The story of Chinese fashion began in 2011 when Feiyue and Huili, the two Chinese sports shoe brands, suddenly got international attention. Their products were seen all over the world. A famous Chinese sportswear brand Li Ning was at the New York Fashion Week in September, 2018. They showed their new designs—sweaters and jackets with Chinese characters.
Shaun Rein, managing director of China Market Research Group, said that the latest Chinese brands no longer catch customers' eye by low price. He told CNN, "They are sure that they can go head to head with foreign brands."
Maybe it is because China's young people are now more confident about their own culture. They don't show immediate interest in Western culture any more.
"Today's young people in China are crazy about Chinese cultural elements (元素)," Jin Qu, the manager of a clothing shopping website, said at a cultural festival in 2018. "They like these elements printed on their clothes, even the brand picture of Laoganma in China, which was once seen as outside of fashion. But now young people are proud of these Chinese symbols."
In fact, many stars in the West now are interested in Chinese cultural elements in fashion. Rihanna, a US singer, for example, wore a Chinese red dress to the 2015 Met Gala in New York. The dress was designed and made by Chinese designer Guo Pei.
"We have to move from making to creating," Chinese-American designer Aric Chen once told The New York Times. "We want to replace the words 'Made in China' with 'Designed in China'."

The dragon dance is a traditional folk activity in China. It started in China during the Han Dynasty as a part of the farming culture. The dragon shows wisdom, power and wealth. Like the lion dance, it is most often seen in festival celebrations. It is believed that performing the dragon dance keeps people away from all the bad luck and brings in good luck and wealth.
In the dance, a team of dancers hold the dragon — which is in the shape of the Chinese dragon — on poles (竿). The lead dancers lift and sweep, making different skillful movements with the head. The dragon s body is made of cloth and bamboo. Its length (长度) can be different, some reaching 100 meters long and held by many people. Today, most dragon dances are performed by ten people, with one holding a bead (珠子) in front of the team. To perform an excellent dragon dance, the performers of a dragon dance team must be able to run in the correct footsteps which shouldn t be too quick or too slow. During Tang Dynasty, tea was sent to European countries first through the Silk Road. It was tea that made Chinese culture spread over in the Western countries. The first book about tea was The Classic of Tea by Lu Yu in Tang Dynasty. In the book, he described the tea culture.
However, the tea culture changed into a kind of new form. Many people could find something bad in it in Song Dynasty. Many people spent much time on it instead of thinking about the safety of their country. Between the end of Yuan Dynasty and the beginning of Qing Dynasty, many people paid more attention to tea. People thought of it as the symbol of the spirit.

Sing the Language You're Learning
How can you remember a song from your childhood to this day Why do your teachers use songs to teach you English It seems there is a scientific reason for this.
Researchers are now studying the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They find that remembering words in a song is the best way to remember even the most difficult language.
"Singing could be a new way of learning a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are used in a catchy and meaningful way," said Dr. Karen Ludke. The findings may help those who have difficulty learning foreign languages. On his blog, Dr. Ludke writes, "A listen-and-repeat singing method can support foreign language learning, and open the door for future research in this area."
Many language teachers know the value (价值)of using music and singing. Hua Zhuying, a teacher at a Chinese language school in Washington D.C., depends heavily on songs in teaching Chinese. She says, "I use music all the time to teach children Chinese. Not only does it work, but it is fun for kids."

You want to know about my stay in America, right Well, it is really an eyeopening experience to study here.
In China, I had English classes five times a week since fifth grade. However, I didn't know how different textbook English could be from everyday (日常的) English until I came to Hotchkiss School, Connecticut.
When I first studied English, I was told to say, "I am fine. " when people say, "How are you " But in the US, I found that people say, "I am good. " or "I'm tired. " One day, someone greeted (和……打招呼) me with "What's up " It made me confused (困惑的)). I thought for a moment and then smiled because I didn't know what to say.
Since then, I have discovered more and more differences between Chinese and American cultures. To my surprise, American girls spend a lot of time in the burning (燃烧的) sun to get a tan . However, in China, girls try every possible way to get their skin paler (更苍白的), or "whiter". I was also surprised by how hard-working American students are. In China, schoolwork is almost everything, so we study hard and that's it. But here, a "good" student gets good grades, does a lot for the public and plays sports or music.
The kids here are so talented. I am starting to be sorry that I gave up playing the piano at an early age and that I have never thought about sports.

Mrs. Green went to Beijing to teach English many years ago. When she arrived, she knew little about the Chinese culture or language. On her way to school one day, she went to the bank to get some money. To her surprise, the bank clerk asked her if she had had her lunch. She was extremely (非常) surprised at such a question, because in American culture it would be regarded as an indirect invitation to lunch. Between unmarried young people it can also indicate the young man's interest in dating (约会) the girl. Then Mrs. Green said that she had eaten already. After this she went to school and was even more surprised when one of the teachers asked her the same question. Then she realized that it could not be an invitation, but was puzzled (困惑的) as to why they asked it. In the following days she was asked the same question again and again, and she spent many hours trying to work out why so many people kept asking her this.
Finally, she came to a conclusion (结论): people must be worried about her health. She was a little underweight (体重不足) at the time, so she thought they must be worrying that she was not eating properly! Only much later did she discover that the question had no real meaning at all. It was simply a greeting (问候语) like "How are you doing "
Culture differences are sometimes puzzling, but most of the time they are fun!
