When Bethany Renfree was 26 years old, she and her three young daughters lived in a low-income apartment building in Jackson, California.Like most of the tenants, Renfree was a single mother.Life was tough.
One cold morning, as Renfree shuffled into the kitchen, she looked at the sink piled high with pots and pans and dishes.“These pots were caked in grease and burnt because I actually didn’t really know how to cook very well at that time.So I’d always be burning our pans with eggs or other things,” Renfree said.
Her 18-month-old twins sat in their high chairs, and her youngest was just a month old. When her eyes returned to the sink, a feeling of hopelessness washed over her.
“I just couldn’t bring myself to do those dishes. And I couldn’t look at them any longer. It was a reminder of how overwhelmed I felt in my own life,” Renfree remembered.
So she grabbed a garbage bag and filled it up with all the dirty dishes. She dragged it outside to the trash, but it was full, so she left it on the very edge of the garbage can. Then she packed up her kids and left for the day.
“When I got back that evening, it was dark,” Renfree said.“But as we were coming in, I kind of kicked something. It was a box.”
Renfree brought the box inside and set it on the table. She had no idea what was inside.“It was my pots, pans and dishes. They were all clean, shining and sparkling,” Renfree remembered.“And a little note popped out, a handwritten note on a yellow piece of paper, ‘I’ve been there before, you will make it, I promise you.’”
To this day, Renfree doesn’t know which of her neighbours washed and returned her dishes. She assumes it was one of the other single moms in the building.“I am so grateful to have learned that we are surrounded by kindness and understanding even in our hardest moments.”

It’s not just how much exercise you do but how much exercise you think you do that really determines your fitness.
Take hotel housekeepers for example.Just by doing their daily work they are getting plenty of exercise, walking up and down hotel corridors (走廊), pushing heavy trolleys, cleaning baths, and changing sheets. But a study in 2007 found they didn’t count this as exercise. Then, Alia Crum from Stanford University told half these hotel housekeepers just how much exercise they were getting and why this benefited them.
Four weeks later, this group of housekeepers had lost weight and had lower blood pressure.Once they viewed work as an opportunity to exercise, it had more of a physical impact on them.Perhaps they began working more energetically or maybe it was down to the placebo effect
All this reminds me of the finding from 2003 that our perceptions about age link to health outcomes. As part of the Whitehall Ⅱ study, 7,000 civil servants were asked when they think middle age ends and old age begins. When Hannah Kuper and Professor Sir Michael Marmot analysed the data they found that the people who thought old age began at the age of 60 or less were more likely to have serious heart problems later on than those who gave the answer 70 years or more.
The answer to this simple question seems to tell something about people’s own personal health status.Maybe they answer that old age starts at 60 because they themselves feel old due to poor health.Or maybe they have a sense that they don’t have long left and this puts them off exercising, which in the long-run affects their health.Or perhaps they feel more stressed and anxious about old age and this has an impact on their health.
28.What did Alia Crum do to the housekeepers?( )
A.She shared their worries. B.She taught them a lesson.
C.She told them a simple truth. D.She gave them some advice.
29.What made the housekeepers improve their health?( )
A.Working harder. B.Taking more exercise.
C.Getting more relaxation. D.Viewing their work differently.
30.What did the Whitehall Ⅱ study find?( )
A.People were afraid of old age. B.People lived longer than before.
C.Feeling young had positive effects. D.Feeling old helped people live longer.
31.What does the underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refer to?( )
A.Old age. B.A lack of exercise.
C.Feeling they’re old. D.Worrying about old age.

The World Health Organization, WHO, reports cancer is on the increase around the world. But it says preventive measures can save the lives of millions of cancer sufferers over the next 10 years.
Since 2010, nearly every country in the world has seen an increase in the number of cancer patients.WHO reports one in six people will develop cancer in their lifetime. At least 10 million people will die from the disease every year.
If the current trend continues, WHO warns, new cancer cases will rise by 60 percent by the year 2040.In low-and middle-income countries, they will rise by more than 80 percent.
Andre Ilbawi is WHO’s technical officer in cancer control. He says more people are dying from cancer in poorer countries because they lack the services and cancer control measures that richer countries have.
Ilbawi said that controlling the disease does not have to cost a lot.The WHO report, he explained, shows that by investing in cancer services, governments can save 7 million lives by 2030.“And that is at the cost of $2.70 per person in low-income countries and $8.15 per person in upper middle-income countries,” Ilbawi said.WHO says cancer does not have to be a death sentence.
Elisabete Weiderpass is the director of the International Agency for Research on Cancer. She says there have been great improvements in research on cancer prevention and treatment. These measures are successfully keeping many people alive who otherwise would have died.
Weiderpass said that preventive policies can work in powerful ways to reduce not only cancer numbers and death rates, but also the social and economic inequality (不平等) in cancer cases.
In its report, WHO describes a series of measures proven to help in preventing new cancer cases. For example, it notes that tobacco-related diseases are responsible for 25 percent of cancer deaths.Deciding not to smoke, it says, can save billions of dollars and millions of lives.
32.How many people will develop cancer in their lifetime?( )
A.About 6 percent. B.About 10 percent.
C.About 16 percent. D.About 18 percent.
33.What should we do to control cancer according to Andre Ilbawi?( )
A.Change our lifestyle. B.Improve cancer services.
C.Develop new technology. D.Research on new medicines.

  How to Write a Composition
Choosing a subject.

Choosing a title.
A subject and a title are not the same thing.A title is the exact words in which a subject is expressed. As a rule, you had better use a short title.A long title is far from attractive, though it may tell more about the subject than a shorter one can.A title is not usually a complete sentence.37.( )

Making an outline.
When you have taken enough notes about your subject, consider each to see whether it is closely connected with your subject.40.( ) Even experienced writers arrange their ideas in their heads, if they do not actually set them down on paper, before they begin to write.
A.Ideas will come into your mind.
B.It should be grammatically correct.
C.Catch them before they may escape.
D.You’d better write what you are interested in.
E.Composition is saying something about something.

Grandpa Rick loved styling his hair but with the chemotherapy (化疗) treatments, his hair started getting really thin.Jackson knew his grandpa felt pretty disheartened about losing his hair. So, he decided to do something to cheer him up and make him feel less alone. He couldn’t make cancer go away, but he could support his grandpa during his treatments. He decided to shave his own head and told his grandpa he wouldn’t be alone, and that he wouldn’t be the only one losing his hair.
However, at school the next day, Jackson’s friends had a different attitude to his hairstyle. Some of his classmates teased and bullied him about his shaved head. One student called him “baldy” and another said “you look like having a cancer”. At first, Jackson felt enraged at the comments, but his anger turned to sadness later on.
When Jackson got home from school, without saying anything, he locked himself in his room. His mother knocked at the door, asking what had happened. The door finally opened.Out he came. With disappointment on his face, he murmured,“My classmates made fun of my haircut.Nobody in the world could know my sorrow.” After saying these, he buried his face in his mother’s chest and burst out crying. The mother felt angry and disappointed with the kids at school, too.
She decided to reach out to Principal (校长) Tom Hadley and tell him about her son being bullied. When he returned her call, he asked if she still had the clippers (理发剪) Jackson cut his hair with.Sue said “yes”, unsure of what he was going to do with this.Tom then asked if Jackson could bring the clippers to school the next day.

Entrance to the museum is free on Sundays, but it would normally cost $3.25 to go and see the film.To get your free tickets, you should e-mail this program by midday on Friday. We’ve only got a limited number of tickets, so the earlier you e-mail us, the more likely you are to get one.
So go ahead with the writing after this song.

out of sight看不见。

56.Whether 结合语境及下文中出现的or可知,这里是whether ...or ...
60.to have be likely to do sth
61.with be associated with是固定搭配,表示“与……有关联”。
62.their 本空后面是名词feet,因此这里应用一个形容词性物主代词来修饰它。
63.effects 站立导致的负面影响不止一种,因此这里应用可数名词effect的复数形式。
64.gradually 本空后面是动词increase,因此这里应用副词gradually来修饰它。
65.burns 根据语境可知,这里在描述一种现存的客观事实,因此应用一般现在时。

第二节
The following day, the principal organised a gathering with all students at the school. He said,“Jackson shaved his head to back his grandpa who has been diagnosed with cancer. But someone laughed at him.” He then asked the students to raise their hands if they’d ever known someone with cancer.Almost everyone in the room raised their hands.Hadley continued,“It is wrong for us to judge somebody else’s reaction to that, and we can do better. In standing up for Jackson and showing my support for his grandpa, I’ve offered to let Jackson shave my head today.”
Hadley then sat in a chair in front of all the students while Jackson shaved his head. The students seemed moved. The principal ended his speech by saying,“Support each other, love each other. We’re a family, that’s why we’re here. We’re family — that’s what we do; we support each other, good times and bad.I want to see more good times than bad, but I’m here either way.” It was these touching words that all the students in the room would never forget.

When Bethany Renfree was 26 years old, she and her three young
daughters lived in a low-income apartment building in Jackson,
California.Like most of the tenants, Renfree was a single mother.Life
was tough.
One cold morning, as Renfree shuffled into the kitchen, she
looked at the sink piled high with pots and pans and dishes.“These pots
were caked in grease and burnt because I actually didn’t really know how
to cook very well at that time.So I’d always be burning our pans with
eggs or other things,” Renfree said.
Her 18-month-old twins sat in their high chairs, and her youngest
was just a month old. When her eyes returned to the sink, a feeling of
hopelessness washed over her.
  “I just couldn’t bring myself to do those dishes.And I couldn’t
look at them any longer. It was a reminder of how overwhelmed I felt in
my own life,” Renfree remembered.
So she grabbed a garbage bag and filled it up with all the dirty
dishes. She dragged it outside to the trash, but it was full, so she left it
on the very edge of the garbage can. Then she packed up her kids and left
for the day.
“When I got back that evening, it was dark,” Renfree
said.“But as we were coming in, I kind of kicked something. It was a
box.”
Renfree brought the box inside and set it on the table. She had no idea
what was inside.“It was my pots, pans and dishes. They were all
clean, shining and sparkling,” Renfree remembered.“And a little
note popped out, a handwritten note on a yellow piece of paper,
‘I’ve been there before, you will make it, I promise you.’”
To this day, Renfree doesn’t know which of her neighbours
washed and returned her dishes. She assumes it was one of the other single
moms in the building.“I am so grateful to have learned that we are
surrounded by kindness and understanding even in our hardest
moments.”

It’s not just how much exercise you do but how much exercise you
think you do that really determines your fitness.
Take hotel housekeepers for example.Just by doing their daily work
they are getting plenty of exercise, walking up and down hotel corridors
(走廊), pushing heavy trolleys, cleaning baths, and changing
sheets. But a study in 2007 found they didn’t count this as
exercise. Then, Alia Crum from Stanford University told half these hotel
housekeepers just how much exercise they were getting and why this
benefited them.
Four weeks later, this group of housekeepers had lost weight and
had lower blood pressure.Once they viewed work as an opportunity to
exercise, it had more of a physical impact on them.Perhaps they began
working more energetically or maybe it was down to the placebo effect
All this reminds me of the finding from 2003 that our perceptions
about age link to health outcomes. As part of the Whitehall Ⅱ study, 7,
000 civil servants were asked when they think middle age ends and old age
begins. When Hannah Kuper and Professor Sir Michael Marmot analysed
the data they found that the people who thought old age began at the age of
60 or less were more likely to have serious heart problems later on than
those who gave the answer 70 years or more.
The answer to this simple question seems to tell something about
people’s own personal health status.Maybe they answer that old age
starts at 60 because they themselves feel old due to poor health.Or maybe
they have a sense that they don’t have long left and this puts them off
exercising, which in the long-run affects their health.Or perhaps they
feel more stressed and anxious about old age and this has an impact on
their health.

The World Health Organization, WHO, reports cancer is on the
increase around the world. But it says preventive measures can save the
lives of millions of cancer sufferers over the next 10 years.
Since 2010, nearly every country in the world has seen an increase
in the number of cancer patients.WHO reports one in six people will
develop cancer in their lifetime. At least 10 million people will die from
the disease every year.
If the current trend continues, WHO warns, new cancer cases will
rise by 60 percent by the year 2040.In low-and middle-income countries,

Andre Ilbawi is WHO’s technical officer in cancer control. He says
more people are dying from cancer in poorer countries because they lack
the services and cancer control measures that richer countries have.
Ilbawi said that controlling the disease does not have to cost a lot.The
WHO report, he explained, shows that by investing in cancer
services, governments can save 7 million lives by 2030.“And that is at
the cost of $2.70 per person in low-income countries and $8.15 per person
in upper middle-income countries,” Ilbawi said.WHO says cancer does
not have to be a death sentence.
Elisabete Weiderpass is the director of the International Agency for
Research on Cancer. She says there have been great improvements in
research on cancer prevention and treatment. These measures are
successfully keeping many people alive who otherwise would have died.
Weiderpass said that preventive policies can work in powerful ways to
reduce not only cancer numbers and death rates, but also the social and
economic inequality (不平等) in cancer cases.
In its report, WHO describes a series of measures proven to help in
preventing new cancer cases. For example, it notes that tobacco-related
diseases are responsible for 25 percent of cancer deaths.Deciding not to
smoke, it says, can save billions of dollars and millions of lives.

Jackson, a 6th grader, was heartbroken about his grandpa’s
diagnosis. He and his grandfather spent a lot of time together.Grandpa
taught him things like how to play golf and how to drive a boat. When
Jackson found out this Papa had been diagnosed with cancer, his world
collapsed.
Grandpa Rick loved styling his hair but with the chemotherapy (化
疗) treatments, his hair started getting really thin.Jackson knew his
grandpa felt pretty disheartened about losing his hair. So, he decided to
do something to cheer him up and make him feel less alone. He couldn’t
make cancer go away, but he could support his grandpa during his
treatments. He decided to shave his own head and told his grandpa he
wouldn’t be alone, and that he wouldn’t be the only one losing his
hair.
However, at school the next day, Jackson’s friends had a
different attitude to his hairstyle. Some of his classmates teased and bullied
him about his shaved head. One student called him “baldy” and another
said “you look like having a cancer”. At first, Jackson felt enraged at
the comments, but his anger turned to sadness later on.
When Jackson got home from school, without saying anything, he
locked himself in his room. His mother knocked at the door, asking what
had happened. The door finally opened.Out he came. With disappointment
on his face, he murmured,“My classmates made fun of my
haircut.Nobody in the world could know my sorrow.” After saying
these, he buried his face in his mother’s chest and burst out crying. The
mother felt angry and disappointed with the kids at school, too.
She decided to reach out to Principal (校长) Tom Hadley and tell
him about her son being bullied. When he returned her call, he asked if
she still had the clippers (理发剪) Jackson cut his hair with.Sue said
“yes”, unsure of what he was going to do with this.Tom then asked if
Jackson could bring the clippers to school the next day.

The following day, the principal organised a gathering with all
students at the school. He said,“Jackson shaved his head to back his
grandpa who has been diagnosed with cancer. But someone laughed at
him.” He then asked the students to raise their hands if they’d ever
known someone with cancer.Almost everyone in the room raised their
hands.Hadley continued,“It is wrong for us to judge somebody else’s
reaction to that, and we can do better. In standing up for Jackson and
showing my support for his grandpa, I’ve offered to let Jackson shave
my head today.”
Hadley then sat in a chair in front of all the students while Jackson
shaved his head. The students seemed moved. The principal ended his
speech by saying,“Support each other, love each other. We’re a
family, that’s why we’re here.We’re family — that’s what we
do; we support each other, good times and bad.I want to see more good
times than bad, but I’m here either way.” It was these touching words
that all the students in the room would never forget.
