When I turned 10, I made up my mind to take up swimming. There was a pool at the Y.M.C.A. offering exactly the opportunity. Mother continually warned against it and kept fresh in my mind the details of drowning in the river. But the Y.M.C A. pool was safe.
I had a childhood fear of water. This started when I was three years old and father took me to the beach. The huge waves knocked me down and swept over me.
The pool was quiet. I was afraid of going in all alone, so I sat on the side of the pool to wait for others. Then came a big boy. He shouted, “Hi, skinny! How’d you like to be ducked ” With that he picked me up and threw me into the deep end. I landed in a sitting position, and swallowed water. But I was not frightened out of my wits(机智)—when my feet hit the bottom, I would make a big jump, coming out of the surface. It seemed a long way down. I gathered all my strength when I landed and made what I thought was a great spring upwards. Then I opened my eyes and saw nothing but water. I tried to shout but no sound came out. I went down, down, endlessly.
When I came to consciousness(意识), I found myself lying on the bed in the hospital.
I never went back to the pool. I avoided water whenever I could. This misfortune stayed with me as the years rolled by. It deprived(剥夺)me of the joy of boating and swimming. Finally, I decided to get an instructor. Piece by piece, he built a swimmer. Several months later, the instructor was finished, but I was not. Sometimes the terror(恐惧)would return.
This went on until July. I swam across the Lake Went Worth. Only once did the terror return. When I was in the middle of the lake, I put my face under and saw nothing but bottomless water. I laughed and said, “Well, Mr. Terror, what do you think you can do to me ”
I had defeated my fear of water.

Is there anybody out there For centuries humans have wondered although the ways in which we have gone about this have varied. As we have gained a greater understanding of the universe, our searches have taken on more concrete(具体的) forms. Questions about aliens(外星人) have become a subject for science rather than science fiction.
Now new cooperation between the Very Large Array (VLA) observatory in New Mexico and the SETI Institute in California means that our curiosity about whether aliens exist can be closer than ever before to being satisfied. Data from the VLA’S 28 radio telescopes, used to scan a vast area of sky, will be fed through a special supercomputer that will search for distant signals.
How likely it is that a signal will be found, and what this might mean, are hard questions to answer. SETI’s existing projects have not discovered any signals from other planets so far. But recent discoveries in space and Earth sciences have provided some encouragement for those who are enthusiastic about the possibility, however remote, of detecting other civilizations.
Once it was thought that our solar system could be unique. Since the discovery of the first exoplanet (a planet beyond the solar system) in the 1990s, thousands more have been located. Around one in five stars is now thought to have a planet in their orbit(运行轨道) in a so-called “habitable(适合居住的) zone”—that is, at a distance from the star where the temperature means that life is theoretically possible.
Are Earth’s 7.5 billion humans, along with billions of other animals and plants they share their home with, on their own in the universe If there is another life form somewhere, could it be as intelligent as humans Or could it threaten them I think all of these need further exploration. As explorations of Mars continue, and a new set of observations from the James Webb Space Telescope are set to begin, our interest in the possibility of alien life appears as much as before.
8. Why does the VLA work with SETI
A. To develop new radio telescopes B. To find evidence of aliens’ existence
C. To build a special supercomputer D. To search for distant signals
9. What is the encouraging news for scientists exploring distant civilizations
A. Life does indeed exist on exoplanets
B. New technologies are employed to find aliens
C. Some exoplanets may have habitable zones
D. Signals have been discovered from other planets
10. What is the author's attitude to the existence of aliens
A. Uncertain B. Positive C. Unacceptable D. Worried
11. What might be the best title for the text
A. Space: the unknown place B. Finding aliens: possible or not
C. Receiving signals: aliens appear again D. Exoplanets: home of aliens
D
For thousands of years, people thought of glass as something beautiful to look at. Only recently have they come to think of it as something to look through. Stores display their goods in large glass windows. Glass bottles and jars that hold food and drink allow us to see the contents. Glass is used to make eyeglasses, microscopes, telescopes, and many other extremely useful and necessary objects.
Until the Second World War, most of the glass used for optical(光学的) instruments was imported from Europe. However, during the war Americans could not get European glass, and they were forced to make their own. Therefore, new kinds of glasses were developed that had been previously unknown. These new effects were achieved by mixing other chemical elements with the sand. Some of these new glasses are very strong and can resist many kinds of shocks. Legend has it that a very hard glass was invented by a Roman who showed his discovery to the Emperor. When the Emperor saw the glass he feared that it would become more valuable than gold and sliver, making his treasure worthless. Therefore, he had the glassmaker killed, and the secret was not discovered again for hundreds of years.
In the present century, safety glass was invented for use in modern cars and planes. Safety glass is made by placing a layer of plastic between two layers of plate glass. When the outside layer of glass is broken, the pieces do not scatter(散开) and injure people. Some glass of the type is strong enough to resist bullets(子弹).
Although nowadays plastics have replaced glass under conditions where glass might be easily broken, there are new uses being developed, for the greatest advantage of glass is that its component(组成的) parts are inexpensive and can be found all over the world.
12. As time goes by, glass ________.
A. is regarded as transparent(透明的)
B. is used to make things look pleasant
C. is seen as more than decoration
D. is widely used to replace steel in making containers
13. Why did Americans make their own glass during the Second World War
A. The war blocked the way of glass import.
B. The glass made in Europe was out of date.
C. They refused to use the European glass.
D. They were able to make a new kind of glass.
14. Why does the author tell us the legend
A. To prove the Roman was the first inventor of hard glass.
B. To support the Americans were as clever as the Romans.
C. To give some information about hard glass.
D. To provide a historical event concerned with hard glass.
15. Why are new uses of glass being developed
A. Because glass is not as safe as plastics.
B. Because glass is cheap and easily obtainable.
C. Because glass is not as strong and durable as plastics.
D. Because glass is more and more widely used.

Li Lei:
Reading is a journey through the mind. When it comes to the books I’ve read recently, Pride and Prejudice, written by Jane Austen, is the one that I’d love to recommend to all of you.
Pride and Prejudice centers on the romantic relationship between Elizabeth, the daughter of a country gentleman, and Darcy, an aristocratic landowner. It is set in rural England at the turn of the 19th century, and it follows the Bennet family, which includes five very different sisters, all of whom their mother is keen to see suitably married. The encounter and interaction of these sisters with several eligible bachelors pushes the story forward.
Pride and Prejudice, based on daily life, is an accurate portrayal of the enclosed social world in which Austen lived, giving us insights into the state of English village life in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Thus, I highly recommend it. Any thoughts and comments you want to share with me on this book would be greatly welcome.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My wife and I wanted to share our new home with family and friends by hosting a small gathering in the early summer. She had prepared lots of snacks, while my job was to have the backyard in order.
There was plenty of space for the kids to run and play. There was just one thing I hadn’t counted on: My brother chose to bring his dog Toby, a 50-pound ball of fire. Though friendly, he could easily knock over my niece’s small boys and my six-month-old granddaughter. So, when my brother showed up, I asked him to watch Toby and keep him outside.
My plan was working out just fine. Toby was using up his energy by running back and forth in the backyard and giving the kids plenty of room. Unexpectedly, after supper, the weather changed. It started to rain and everyone went indoors.
It was an awkward moment. I didn’t want Toby to be running around in the house, and my brother wasn’t happy with driving home with a wet dog. Eventually, my brother decided to leave rather than force the issue.
A few days passed, and I hadn’t heard anything from my brother. I texted him and expressed wishes for him to come out again. His reply came as a surprise — a shock, actually: “Not a chance.” Clearly, he was unhappy over the way we had parted. After all, I had left him little choice. Well, he’ll get over it, I reasoned.
Two months passed. My wife suggested I get in touch with my brother, but I resisted, thinking he should call first. However, my conscience (良心) kept bothering me. I tried to put myself in my brother’s shoes. He was facing health issues and his wife of thirty-five years had passed away a few months earlier. Toby was his constant companion, the one who kept him going.

I realized it was me who was at fault.

Is Fresh Air Really Good for You
We all grew up hearing people tell us to “go out and get some fresh air.” ___16___ According to recent studies, the answer is a big YES, if the air quality in your camping area is good.
___17___ If the air you’re breathing is clean — which it would be if you’re away from the smog of cities — then the air is filled with life-giving, energizing oxygen.

【答案】Li Hua:
I truly concur with you, Li Lei. “Pride and Prejudice” is without a doubt a masterpiece. I was profoundly captivated by the vividly depicted characters and the complex plot. It not only presents the love narrative but also mirrors the social actuality of that era. What I value the most is Elizabeth’s independent and astute personality. She has the courage to pursue true love, unfettered by worldly constraints. It’s a book that I would be more than willing to reread time and again.

【答案】One possible version:
I realized it was me who was at fault. I had been so focused on keeping the party under control that I failed to consider how important Toby was to my brother during this difficult time. My pride had kept me from reaching out, and now months had passed without a proper conversation. One evening, I picked up the phone and left him a voice message, apologizing for my behavior and asking if we could meet. To my relief, he called back the next day, and we agreed to get together soon.
With the biscuits my wife had made, I arrived at my brother’s door. He opened it with a surprised smile, and for a moment, neither of us spoke. Then we hugged — something we hadn’t done since before his wife passed away. We sat on the porch with Toby resting beside us, and I handed him the box of biscuits. “Thank you,” he said quietly. We talked for hours, laughing, remembering old times, and slowly rebuilding what had been lost. As I watched Toby gently rest his head on my brother’s leg, I knew we were finally on the path to healing.
