Hansel Enmanuel, a 19-year-old basketball player, has drawn attention after videos spread quickly showing his awesome skills, like making 3-point shots and dunking (灌篮) with ease. All with just his right arm. It looks almost effortless when he plays. However, it’s not. It never has been.
Enmanuel was 6 when he was climbing a wall. It fell over him, and bricks and blocks fell on his left arm. He was rushed to the hospital, but the doctor couldn’t save his arm and it was cut off several inches below the shoulder. It was a dark time for Enmanuel and his family.
Slowly, things got better for the little boy. He still remembers the first time he tied his shoes. Just 7, Enmanuel was waiting for his mother to do it for him, but she was busy cooking. “I was like, never mind, I’m going to start,” he said in a recent interview. “I told myself let me try. I was trying. Then I made it.” “So I was excited, excited like crazy,” he added.
Small things became huge victories. Months after that, Enmanuel tried basketball, too. But it’s not an easy path. His missing arm left him lacking balance. Every time he tried to run, he’d crash to the ground, falling on debris (碎片) covered across the courts he played on. These falls left him with numerous scars (疤痕). In the interview, Enmanuel pointed to the scar after scar down the length of the leg, reminders of a hard time that has brought him to excellence in basketball skills.
Enmanuel first dunked at 14, and it wasn’t long before his popularity grew with the views on his videos. But it wasn’t the highlight videos that interested his coach, Corey Gipson. He liked Enmanuel’s attitude to deal with challenges. “Hansel is a very tough person,” Gipson said. “When you see him on the floor, you just see an unstoppable force that doesn’t take anything for granted.” “I’m not special,” Enmanuel said. “I’m not different from anybody else. The only difference is that I’ve got one arm, but that’s not different.”
4. Which is the primary reason Enmanuel’s story has attracted widespread attention
A. His coach’s public praise of his excellence.
B. The rapid spread of his videos on social media.
C. His extraordinary physical strength despite having one leg.
D. His ability to perform wonderful basketball skills with a disability.
5. Why does the author describe “the scar after scar down the length of the leg” in the narrative
A. To stress the physical harm from the wall accident.
B. To show the medical problems he had after the operation.
C. To symbolize the failures and constant efforts behind his success.
D. To highlight the poor conditions of the court he played on.
6. What impressed Coach Corey Gipso most about Enmanuel
A. His physical strength.
B. His attitude towards challenges.
C. His dunking skills at age 14.
D. The number of views on his videos.
7. What is the story trying to convey
A. Natural talent is the key to success in sports.
B. Social media popularity defines an athlete’s value.
C. Determination and a positive mindset can overcome obstacles.
D. Physical disabilities prevent people from achieving greatness.

In order to help change our influence on the environment of the earth, a California-based organisation is searching to build an AI language. It can allow people to deeply understand nonhuman languages.
Aza Raskin is the co-founder and president of the Earth Species Project (ESP), an organisation that uses a form of AI to translate non-human languages. ESP wants to use its machine learning technology to understand this important information and make it easily known to the public.
Raskin stressed their purpose to help in the protection by explaining, “The end we are working towards is, we can discover the non-human language, and decode (破译) animal communication. Along the way, what is also important is that we are developing technology that supports scientists and protection.” ESP believes that understanding languages can help deepen our relationship with animals and allow us to better protect them.
In the past, understanding the communication of animals heavily depended on a great deal of observation. Whether it is alarm calls or sounds made by dolphins or elephants, scientists have been amazed by the different forms of non-human communication present in these animals. With the development of new technologies, researchers have now begun to understand a great deal of data they can get through machine learning.
Elodie Briefer, a professor at the University of Copenhagen, has recently helped co-develop a pig grunt (呼噜声) analysing algorithm. It can help scientists understand whether the pigs are expressing positive or negative feelings. However, ESP is doing it differently, by focusing on all kinds of animals, not just one. ESP believes it is likely that social animals communicate with each other, for example, whales and dolphins.
Although ESP believes that understanding AI machine learning data is only one step towards full communication, it believes that one day we will be able to understand entire systems of communication.
8. What is the main goal of the Earth Species Project
A. To focus on marine animal research.
B To decode animal communication using AI technology.
C. To develop products featuring animal voices.
D. To replace traditional animal observation methods completely.
9. How did researchers primarily study animal communication in the past
A. Through extensive observation. B. By focusing only on pig grunts.
C. Using machine learning algorithms. D. By developing AI language models.
10. How does ESP’s approach differ from Elodie Briefer’s research
A. ESP uses simpler algorithms. B. ESP relies more on human observation.
C. ESP studies a wider range of species. D. ESP ignores emotional aspects of communication.
11. What does ESP believe about the future of understanding animal communication
A. It will remain limited to simple sounds.
B. Only marine animals can be fully decoded.
C. Only machine learning data will ever be available.
D. Full communication systems may eventually be understood.

More than 50 countries and localities, including the UK, have recently introduced taxes (税) on soft drinks. There is still a debate about the effect of such taxes. A new research surveys the evidence on the effects of soft drink taxes on prices and purchases in 27 studies covering 11 areas.
The reason for taxing soft drinks is that there are costs associated with their consumption that people do not fully consider. For example, there is a large body of evidence connecting the consumption of sugary drinks with increased rates of obesity (肥胖), tooth decay (龋齿) and other health conditions, resulting in worse health for individuals and higher healthcare costs born e by the publicly funded health service. Imposing (征收) a tax on sugary soft drinks acts to increase the price, and can encourage people to turn to other things.
20 of the studies that we surveyed look at the effects of soft drink taxes on prices. These studies find that taxes increase the prices faced by consumers. The size of the price increase varies, reflecting differences in the size and structure of the tax, the set of products and the size of the geographical area to which it applies. For example, price increases are typically less than the amount of the tax in smaller areas — such as Berkeley — where the ease of avoiding the tax leads to competitive pressures to keep prices down.
A common review of taxes on soft drinks is that they disproportionately (不成比例地) influence lower income individuals, because these people spend a larger percentage of their income on soft drinks. However, poor diet and its negative health effects are also more common among lower income households; there could be a lot of health benefits if taxes lead these households to reduce their intake of sugary soft drinks.
A number of studies look at whether the effects of taxes differ across people, with varying, and sometimes contradictory (矛盾的) findings. For example, studies in Chile, Catalonia and Philadelphia find that purchases fell most among higher socio-economic status (SES) households, a study in Mexico finds that purchases fell most among lower SES, and another study in Mexico finds no significant difference across SES.
12. Why are taxes imposed on soft drinks according to the text
A. To boost government income.
B. To deal with the external costs of consumption.
C. To promote international trade of drinks.
D. To lower the production expenses of soft drinks.
13. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3
A. The effect of soft drink taxes is the same in all regions.
B. Smaller regions consistently avoid imposing soft drink taxes.
C. Local market conditions significantly influence how taxes affect prices.
D. Tax amounts are fully passed to consumers through price increases.
14. Despite the financial burden, what potential benefit can soft drink taxes bring to lower-income households
A. Higher disposable income.
B. Greater social welfare support.
C. Increased access to luxury goods.
D. Improved dietary habits and health outcomes.
15. Which would be the best title for the text
A. Soft Drink Taxes: Evidence and Debates.
B. Health Impacts of Sugary Drinks.
C. Tax Effects on Low-Income Groups.
D. Global Trends in Soft Drink Taxation.

Five Tips to Let Your Emotions All Out
We all feel strong emotions — sadness from a missed chance, anger over unfairness, or worry before a big day. Bottling them up makes us feel heavy, but letting them out healthily eases the load. Here are five simple tips to release your feelings without harm.
Name your true emotion.
____16____. It’s easy to say “I’m stressed,” but that’s too vague (不明确的). Stop, take a breath, and ask: “Is this sadness Frustration Fear ” Naming it — like “I’m hurt because my friend canceled the party.” — makes it feel smaller. It also helps you pick the right way to let it go, instead of reacting quickly.
Use movement to release tension.
Emotions get stuck in our bodies: a tight chest when sad, trembling hands when angry. Moving helps release that tension. You don’t need a workout — go for a short walk, dance to a song, squeeze a stress ball, or pace your room. ____17____.
Share with someone you trust.
Talking helps a lot — if you chat with someone you trust. This could be a parent, friend, or teacher. ____18____. You might simply say, “I’m worried about my test.” A good listener won’t judge—they’ll just let you speak. This lightens the weight of your emotions.
Accept all your emotions as okay.
Don’t tell yourself “I shouldn’t feel this way.” All emotions are normal. ____19____— tears release sadness. Holding back because you think you “should” be strong only keeps feelings trapped. Letting them show is honest, not weak.
____20____.
After letting an emotion out, pause to reflect. Ask: “How do I feel now Did walking/ talking help ” This helps you learn. For example, if dancing calmed your anger, you’ll know to do it next time. It also helps you understand what triggers your feelings, so you handle them better.
A. If you want to cry, just cry
B. Reflect on your experience afterwards
C. First, figure out what you’re really feeling
D. Actually sometimes you can find solutions on your own
E. You don’t need to fix the problem; just share how you feel
F. So it’s important to choose a healthier way to express emotions
G. Physical activity calms your body and mind, making emotions easier to handle

But the next morning, the rare stamp was gone (消失). I searched everywhere in my room but couldn’t find it. Then I thought: Luke was the only one who saw it. Did he take it
The next day, I asked Luke angrily, “Did you take my stamp ” He looked shocked and said, “No! I’d never take your things. You’re my friend.” But I didn’t believe him. I spoke coldly, and Luke walked away, hurt.

At a small country school, I had a best friend named Luke. My family was rich, but Luke’s family was poor. Even so, we were always together and had a great friendship. We played, did homework, and talked under the old banyan tree every day.
One sunny afternoon, I brought my favorite stamp collection (集邮) to school, especially to show Luke a rare stamp (邮票) my uncle gave me. Luke loved it — he touched the stamps gently and said they were amazing. I felt happy to share it with him.
After that, we stopped talking and avoided each other. Our good friendship was broken, all because of the lost stamp.

A week later, when I was cleaning my desk, something fell out of my English book. I looked down and saw that my lost stamp was right there. My face turned red and I realized that I must have accidentally put it between the pages after showing it to Luke. I felt a wave of relief, but then guilt hit me hard. I’d accused my best friend without any proof and hurt his feelings deeply. I grabbed the stamp and ran out of the classroom, determined to find Luke and apologize.
I quickly ran toward Luke and he was surprised. He stepped back, clearly still upset. “Luke, I’m so sorry,” I said, holding out the stamp. “I found it in my book. I was wrong to doubt you. You’re my best friend, and I should never have treated you like that.” Luke stared at the stamp, then at me. After a moment, he smiled weakly. “I knew you’d find it,” he said. We hugged, and just like that, the awkward silence between us was gone. Our friendship, once broken, was now stronger than ever.
