It was my first day at school, I felt nervous and scared.
I went to all my classes with no friends. It felt like no one cared.
I listened anxiously to all the lessons and waited for lunch break. Then finally the bell rang. It was time to talk and have fun.
In the lunch line I met a new friend who wore a hijab (穆斯林女性戴的面纱) on her head, and though I am Jewish, we got along fine, and I was so relieved (如释重负的) when she said, "Sit with us, at our table.” she pointed to the one next to the door.
So I agreed, and took my tray (托盘) and was about to walk with her across the floor, when suddenly I heard, "Hey, I saw you on the bus,” said a tall girl in a long skirt. "I see your Jewish star necklace. You should sit with us.”
At that moment I looked around, and that's when I noticed, to my surprise, the nations of the world, separating themselves. That's what I saw through my own eyes.
The Spanish only sat with the Spanish, the Hindus only with the Hindus, the Russians always with the Russians, and never the Arabs with the Jews.
I saw the reason why war gets started. Everyone sticks to their own kind. The lunchroom was a map of the world. Why was everyone so blind
And so I turned down this girl, and went with the first, and there was no enmity (敌意). I built a bridge between two worlds when I sat with those different from me.
4 Which of the following can best describe the Jewish girl's feelings on her first day at school
A. Interested and happy. B. Frightened and nervous.
C. Strange and careless. D. Surprised and excited.

A. there was a map of the world on the wall of the lunchroom.
B. the lunchroom was really a map of the world.
C. the students from different nations sat within their own kind.
D. the lunchroom was designed to look like a map of the world.
7. The purpose of the passage is probably to ______.
A. call on more understanding to the Jewish. B. introduce an international school for Jewish children.

Mr Gao, a teacher from China, asked his students to hand in their homework through a QR code (二维码). “We spent an hour or two in class learning how to generate the codes, and in the end everything gets easier,” said Gao. “When students finish their homework, they keep it on WeChat (微信). Then, each student makes his own QR code and gives it to me. So I can check their work everywhere using my computer or mobile phone.
The QR codes can be sent to Mr Gao by email, QQ and WeChat. When Gao scans (扫描) his students' QR codes, their homework appears on his phone. He finds that their homework becomes more creative, with many pictures, music and even videos.
Gao's students like the new way and think it is interesting. “We are living in the information age. Many students like to work with computers, which makes learning more fun.” said Taotao, a student of Gao’s.
“The paper is not easy to keep, but the code is easy to keep and share.” Gao said. “It is worth trying to use new technology in education. Education itself is a kind of creation. I don't want my students to fall behind the times.”
However, some parents are worried. They are afraid that their children will spend too much time on computers and less time communicating with teachers. But in fact, it's unnecessary. Students still need to look up information in books and write it down when they do their homework. They only use the code when they hand in their work, which doesn't take them too much time. Also for teachers, it allows them to check the students work at any time. And it's also an easy way to share homework with other students.
8. What does the underlined word “generate” in Paragraph 1 mean
A. bring B. use
C. create D. find
9. According to the passage, which advantage of using the code is mentioned
A. It's more convenient for students to check their own homework.
B. Using the code can develop students’ ability of creativity.
C. It's easier for students to get good grades when they use the code.
D. Students don't need to use books any more while doing homework.
10. Some parents are worried, because they think their children will ________.
A. talk with teachers face to face
B. find the QR codes too difficult to use
C. not like the new way of handing in homework
D. spend too much time on computers or phones
11. From the passage, we know __________.
A. students can only send their QR codes by WeChat.
B. Using QR codes makes it easier for students to share their homework.
C. Teachers needn't check homework any more.
D. students needn't hand in homework any more.

When I was 12 years old, I already knew that my teen years were going to be the worst years of my life. I was a total outsider, bullied (欺凌) at school. I felt completely alone in my small town.
But by starting to do volunteer work when I was 14, I turned my problem into a passion for helping others. The opportunity to practice kindness made me feel like my life had a greater purpose. The more positive energy I shared, the more kindness and appreciation I received. I realized that my purpose in life would be to reach out to people, specifically teenagers, and help them feel less alone.
Books were my true friends back then. I was so thankful that the authors wrote those books. The kindness they offered me with their books saved my life. One of my biggest dreams was to become an author so I could write books that would help other teenagers the way those books helped me.
After surviving terrible experiences at school and at home, I made a choice to take the optimistic, positive road in the next steps of my journey. My dream career, one I thought was only possible for the authors I loved, is what I am doing now. I have been a full-time author of teen novels since 2007 and am grateful for this amazing opportunity to reach out to readers every single day.
Kindness saved me when I needed help the most. Even small acts of kindness can change someone’s life. You never know what someone else is going through. But by practicing daily kindness, you become an architect of positive change.
12. What was the author’s life like when he was 12
A. Boring. B. Peaceful. C. Unhappy. D. Meaningful.
13. How did the volunteer work benefit the author
A. It made him popular in his town. B. It helped him find the meaning of life.
C. It helped him understand others’ lives better. D. It helped to shape his dream career.
14. Why did the author choose writing as his job
A. He was inspired by his teacher. B. He could pass positive energy to readers.
C. He wanted to share his school experiences. D. He found he had a talent for writing.
15. What does the author suggest readers do in the last paragraph
A. Say ‘no’ to bullies bravely. B. Make positive changes in their lives.
C. Treat others with kindness in daily life. D. Learn to care more about others’ feelings

Jim picked up the newspaper that was lying on the couch. He noticed a large advertisement on the front page. The local department store was sponsoring a contest. “Tell us why your mom is special and win a shopping spree (疯狂购物) for her,” said the ad.
“This is perfect!” thought Jim. He ran to his room with the newspaper, taking a pencil and a blank piece of paper from his desk, he started to write.
“My mom is the best mother in the world. She always makes a lunch for me to take to school, and she never forgets my dessert. She reads as many books to me before bed as I want. She always remembers to check under the bed for monsters. And she gives the best hug, but never in front of my friends, who would laugh at me for hugging my mom.”
Jim liked what he had written. He copied it neatly and got an envelope and a stamp from his dad. He ran to the mailbox with his entry (参赛作品), “Mom will love having a shopping spree,” he thought.
Jim checked the mailbox every day for his prize. Days passed by, and then weeks. Soon it was the day before Mother’s Day. Jim still hadn’t heard anything about the contest.
“What am I going to do now ” he wondered. He didn’t have a present, and he didn’t have a shopping spree, and he still didn’t have any money. He had to think of something. Jim closed his eyes and curled his toes and thought so hard that his ears hurt.
