Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
At 19, determined not to spend my gap year stuck at home, I took off with a friend and we traveled around Europe for months. We stayed in the cheapest accommodation and lived on bread and cheese.
This was 1990, a time before mobile phones and the Internet, when the primary contact with home was mails from the post office. Before I left, Mom had made me a money bag and a sleeping sheet to avoid unclean bedding. She didn't want me to go, and these gifts were her way of telling me to have a wonderful time.
It's only now, as my 18-year-old daughter is preparing to leave on her own gap year trip, that I understand how Mom felt.
While working multiple jobs and saving money, my daughter has also researched where to stay, how to get around and what to do before setting off. She rarely asks for my opinion and I am unsure whether I should wade in (介入) or back off. I want to be supportive but not too involved. I want to be cool but not aloof (漠不关心的). I want to be like the perfect travel guide.
After all, when she first mentioned gap year travel, I was encouraging, wanting her to have her own experiences that shape her. Though I'm not quite ready, this trip is about her. This is not 1990 and I am not stuck at home waiting for a letter. Therefore, I haven't concentrated too long on the idea of her not being here. I have promised not to bother her with messages, but at least I know she can contact me when she wants to.

In 1924, the world-famous sculptor Gutzon Borglum and his thirteen-year-old son took a trip together out west. They left their home in Connecticut and, days later, got off a train in Rapid City, South Dakota. Only about six thousand people lived in Rapid City. South Dakota had been a state for only thirty-five years. The Borglums actually were just in the center of the United States.
Gutzon had come to South Dakota to see if he could find a mountain to carve into the biggest sculpture in the country. He was a patriotic man, and his idea was to give America a sculpture to glorify its greatness. Perhaps it could be huge carvings of great Americans with heads as high as the tallest buildings. What an amazing idea! But many people thought it was crazy. And no one, not even Borglum himself, realised how hard it would be to do.
Gutzon and his son, Lincoln, travelled into the wild country of the Black Hills. The Black Hills is an area 120 miles long and sixty miles wide. It rises up four thousand feet and more. The Borglum party climbed to the top of the tallest mountain, Harney Peak. Far away, Gutzon could see a granite (花岗石) mountain. It stood higher than the surrounding peaks. That would be the place for his giant sculpture!
The name of the mountain was Mount Rushmore. Today, huge six-storey-high carved heads of presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln gaze out from high on the granite face of Mount Rushmore. Borglum overcame an incredible number of obstacles to create this great national monument. He said it was like waging a one-man war.
Mount Rushmore has become a symbol of patriotism and pride for many Americans. But people from all over the world travel to marvel at it. Even so, there are people who think it should not ever have been made.
【语篇解读】 本文是一篇说明文。拉什莫尔山又叫美国总统山、总统雕像山,它坐落于美国南达科他州基斯通附近的美利坚合众国总统纪念公园。

6.Why did Gutzon Borglum leave his home
A.To explore nature.
B.To seek his fortune.
C.To complete a project.
D.To take an adventure trip.

7.What is special about Mount Rushmore
A.Its economic status.
B.Its political significance.
C.Its cultural advantage.
D.Its geographical position.
解析:B 细节理解题。根据最后两段可知,Gutzon Borglum在拉什莫尔山上雕刻了四位美国总统的头像,这使它成为美国爱国主义的象征。
8.Which of the following words can best describe Gutzon Borglum
A.Curious and smart.
B.Kind and generous.
C.Hard-working and practical.
D.Ambitious and determined.

Mystery Box Travel Became Trendy
Travel is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you're going to get, especially when using a mystery box plane ticket.
Earlier this year, mystery box travel purchases surged and became trendy among China's young people. In normal trips, people often plan their vacations well in advance. After buying a mystery box at a low price—usually 100 or 200 yuan—however, the travelers using this method will select their departure airport and receive several destination options to choose from. After the destination is decided, their trip begins.
Since the destination options include many less popular cities, travel mystery boxes also bring vigor and economic benefits to these destinations. For example, Dehong city is a beautiful city in Yunnan Province yet has few visitors due to a lack of promotion.Following its inclusion as a mystery box travel destination, however, it has gained a lot of attention and is now thought of as a solid location for tourism.
But even so, a large number of people feel disappointed with travel mystery boxes because they can encounter many problems after purchasing one, such as inappropriate travel times, sudden flight cancellations, or even challenges with refunds.Sun Weili from Ctrip suggested in an interview with Haibao News that visitors should choose reliable platforms and sign contracts to guarantee their interests.

Bright and early on the morning of our first full day in Antarctica,L'Austral's Captain Fabien's voice woke us up as it came over our stateroom's speaker. If we looked outside right now,he said,we'd see a beautiful sea of icebergs (冰山) floating in the golden sunlight. My sister and I jumped out of bed, staring in awe (敬畏地) as we sailed past giant pieces of ice.In the distance,we spotted the fins and tails of humpback whales feeding just a short distance away.Next door,my parents were also waking up to the sights of a new day in Antarctica.Over breakfast,my sister and I excitedly told them about the whales we saw from our room that morning.
You might not immediately think “family vacation”when talking about a trip to Antarctica, but tour operators like Adventures by Disney are changing that. The company offers guided group trips to destinations across all seven continents (洲).
Our adventure started when we flew to Buenos Aires and explored the beautiful Argentine capital for a day. After leaving Buenos Aires,we flew to Ushuaia on an Adventures by Disney plane. Then,it was the journey toward the Drake Passage. After a speedy Drake Passage crossing,we reached Antarctica early, adding a half day to our scheduled four days on and around the continent.
To those unfamiliar with Adventures by Disney, the fact that you can experience Antarctica—the most remote, extreme continent—with Disney might be surprising.During the trip, there were thoughtful touches, from stamped postcards to send from an Antarctica post office to a Champagne toast on our final Zodiac journey;Adventures by Disney truly thought of everything.Antarctica is a life-changing destination packed with experiences that can't be replicated (复制).We bonded (建立亲密关系) over Drake Passage seasickness, hiked up frozen hills alongside penguins, and toasted our White Continent adventure with Champagne while floating beside a glacier. And honestly,it's going to be tough for the next family trip we take to compete.

Michael Yellowlees set off to complete a 5,000-mile walk across Canada in the spring of 2021,wearing a kilt (短褶裙) and carrying a few items in a handcart, including a guitar. The 32-year-old musician from Dunkeld, Scotland, walked from the shores of the Pacific Ocean to the east coast of Newfoundland on the edge of the North Atlantic with his pet dog, Luna, an Alaskan husky, by his side.
Speaking about the Scottish Highlands, Mr.Yellowlees said, “It is a beautiful landscape, but with a strong sense of sadness because of the absence of woodland, wildlife and people. So I decided to walk across the great wildernesses of Canada to raise funds for Trees for Life, a Scottish rewilding charity, and its work to restore(恢复)Scotland's Caledonian Forest.”
The enthusiastic walker shared some of his experiences, including meeting black bears and hearing wolves cry loudly at night. He also mentioned a moment when he lost Luna after she jumped out of a little boat during a trip in the waterway section of the Trans Canada Trail in Northern Ontario.
Yet Mr.Yellowlees was deeply touched by the warmth of the people along the way. In every town and village, people offered him food, shelter and donations. And he was accompanied into towns and cities by marching pipe bands and interviewed by newspapers, the radio and TV.
Steve Micklewright, chief executive officer of Trees for Life, said, “We followed Michael's journey across Canada with respect and admiration. Restoring native habitats and wildlife to the Highlands is a big task that no one can do alone. But Michael's extraordinary journey is proof that an individual can really make a difference.”
Bob Davidson, one of Michael Yellowlees' friends, said, “This is not a slow walk in the park, but a long march with heavy equipment on the rough road at an incredible pace. He's an amazing guy.”

More than half of American Gen Z adults, those born between the late 1990s and the early 2010s,are frequent travelers, having taken three or more leisure trips in the past year, according to a recent survey. That's because Gen Zers are being raised in a society where travel is more prioritized (放在首位的) than it was for past generations, and they are broadly exposed to travel inspiration through social media, said Lindsey Roeschke,a travel analyst.
Yet unlike past generations,Gen Zers aren't waiting until they have high-paying jobs to travel.Rather,“they are finding ways to fit it into their budgets now,”according to a report on Gen Z travel trends(趋势).Only 11% of Gen Zers who travel frequently come from households earning $100,000 or more yearly,61% say they earn less than $50,000 per year.
But that doesn't mean that Gen Zers aren't worried about travel expenses. In a survey of 4,000 full-time students aged 18 to 25,some 76% named financial costs as their greatest travel concern. They are also willing to cut other spending to pay for travel. In the survey,83% of young adults said they plan to cut back on non-essential spending.A guide published by Student Beans shows that from 2021 to 2022,Gen Zers' average spending per purchase (购买) decreased for fashion (7%),tech (6%) and food (12%),while their travel purchases surged (激增) by 60%.
According to Morning Consult's survey, the top three incentives for American Gen Z travelers mirror those of other generations:to relax, escape of get away, and spend time with friends and family.Yet the data shows they're motivated to travel for adventure, mental health and cultural experiences more than older generations.
Gen Zers increasingly want their travel experiences to be meaningful, according to the survey of 4,000 full-time students. Some 68% said they were interested in experiencing a new culture, while only 21% were in search of nightlife and clubbing.Gen Zers will pay more for pet-friendly accommodations. And a report states 56% of Gen Zers will pay more for travel companies with environmentally friendly practices.
【语篇解读】 本文是一篇新闻报道。Z世代比其他任何年代的人更热衷于旅行。
5.Why do Gen Zers travel more than past generations according to Lindsey
A.They have high-paying jobs.
B.They tend to take inspiration from traveling.

A.They have lost interest in fashion.
B.They are concerned about travel expenses.
