Over centuries, kung fu has been used for self-defense and to defend against enemies in war.
In Dengfeng today, ten kilometers from the Shaolin Temple, there are over 60 martial arts schools with more than 50,000 students. They come to the schools for a variety of reasons. The majority hope to become movie stars. Some come to learn skills that will ensure good jobs in the military or police force. A few are sent by their parents to learn self-control and hard work.
Master Hu Zhengsheng teaches at a small school in Dengfeng. Recently, he was offered an important role in a kung fu movie. It would have been good publicity for his school, but he did not accept.
He doesn’t agree with how kung fu is often shown in movies. Unlike many large schools, which teach acrobatics (杂技) and kickboxing, Hu teaches his students time-honored kung fu forms — passed down through generations of masters and steeped in centuries-old martial arts heritage. But attracting new students to this style of kung fu has become a problem. Hu’s afraid his art will soon die out. He has to remind his students that kung fu was designed for fighting, not to entertain.
“There are no high kicks or acrobatics here,” he says. “It is hard to convince boys to spend many years learning something that won’t make them wealthy or famous.” Hu’s students sleep in unheated rooms and train outside no matter what the temperature is. They hit trees with their bare hands and take turns sitting on each other’s shoulders to build leg strength. To master kung fu, they must learn respect, and how to “eat bitterness”, a Mandarin expression meaning to “enduring suffering”. The life of a Shaolin master, Hu believes, is not easy or attractive.
Master Hu is in a difficult position. For old traditions to survive, the young must learn. Gradually, he has begun offering a few courses in kickboxing and the acrobatic kung fu forms, hoping to attract new students. Then, maybe, he’ ll be able to convince them to learn Shaolin kung fu the traditional way.

A team of researchers in Florida may have just created the world’s coolest paint ever. Chanda, a researcher in the University of Central Florida, and his team have created a way to imitate nature’s ability to reflect light and create beautifully vivid color without absorbing any heat like traditional pigments (色素) do. They focus on exploring structural color and how people could use it to live cooler in a rapidly warming world.
Structural colors are created not from traditional pigments but from the arrangement of colorless materials to reflect light in certain ways, like how rainbows are made after it rains. Think about the most beautiful colors you’ve ever seen — forest green, wine red or crystal blue, some of which, however, are nearly impossible to recreate artificially. That’s because these beautiful colors are not achieved through pigments — they’ re all in the structure, like the green of peacocks’ feathers.
Think about those cherries that redden your mouth after eating them or when your jeans turned green from sitting in wet grass. These are pigments. To create these colors, synthetic (合成的) materials like heavy metals are used to create vivid paints. Chanda stressed, “A deep blue needs cobalt; a deep red needs cadmium. They are toxic. We are polluting our nature by using this kind of paint. So one of the major motivations for us is to create colors based on non-toxic materials.”
Beyond the beautiful colors and safety that structure can provide, Chanda also found that unlike pigments, structural paint resists heat absorption and instead casts light back outward. That’s why people are advised to wear lighter colors in hotter days and why many buildings are painted white. This means this eco-friendly paint could help communities keep cool in an increasingly warming climate.
“Nature has followed the path to create harmony among our surroundings,” Chanda said. “We want to be colorful but our color production is not really supported or inspired by nature. I hope this paint could be the future to a healthier, cooler environment.”
8. Which of the following colors doesn’t belong to structural colors
A. The blue of crystals.
B. The orange of bright rainbows.
C. The purple of ripe grapes.
D. The green of peacocks’ feathers.
9. What does the underlined word“toxic” in the third paragraph probably mean
A. Beneficial. B. Priceless.
C. Artificial. D. Harmful.

A. It reflects light. B. It absorbs heat.
C. It changes color. D. It resists water.

A. To criticize heavy metals use in art.
B. To present a new eco-friendly paint.
C. To advocate more colorful paintings.
D. To explain rainbow formation principles.

If you fall off a bike, you’ll probably end up with a cinematic memory of the experience; the wind in your hair, the rock on the road, and then the pain. That’s known as an episodic (片段式的) memory. Now researchers have discovered cells that make this sort of memory possible.
The cells are called time cells, and they place a sort of time stamp on memories as they are being formed. That allows us to recall experiences in the right order.
Dr. Bradley Lega and his team found the time cells by studying the brains of 27 people who were waiting for operations to treat their serious diseases. As part of their pre-operation preparation, these patients had detectors placed in the hippocampus (海马体), a key brain region for memory. In the experiment, the patients studied orders of 12 or 15 words that appeared on a screen during a period of about 30 seconds. Then, after a break, they were asked to write down the words they had seen in the right order.
Meanwhile, the researchers were measuring the activity of individual brain cells. And they found a small number that would fire at specific times during each series of words. These time stamps seemed to help people remember when they had seen each word, and in what order. And the brain probably uses the same approach when we’re reliving an experience like falling off a bike.
The results help explain why people who have damage to the hippocampus may experience memory problems. Their neural systems lack the specialized cells that act as internal timekeepers for memories. Without these crucial time-stamping cells the brain loses its ability to mark when each part of an experience occurs and how they connect in sequence. This absence leaves memories fragmented, making it nearly impossible to piece together the full story of past events in the correct order.
But even though time cells are very important for episodic memory, Lega says, they really aren’t like clocks, which run at a steady pace. Instead, time cells are speeding up or slowing down from time to time, depending on factors like mood and the intensity of the experience.
12. What’s the function of time cells
A. Arranging memories in time order.
B. Creating vivid cinematic memories.
C. Recording physical pain during an accident.
D. Defining episodic memory scientifically.
13. What’s paragraph 3 mainly about
A. A treatment for brain diseases.
B. A memory exercise technique.

D. The detectors in the hippocampus.
14. Why do people with a damaged hippocampus experience memory problems
A. Their attention can’t be focused.
B. Their time cells in the brain are impaired.
C. Their episodic memories are overactive.
D. Their brains can’t store new information.

It was December. Cold snow was falling as Emily walked slowly home from school. She really hated this snow— and everything else about Casper, Wyoming, America! She missed China so much! “I hate it here! I want to go home!” Emily thought.
She reached for a small white envelope in her pocket. In it was an invitation to Jennifer’s party. Emily didn’t want to go. She felt embarrassed at the thought of being at a party with a group of kids she hardly knew. She closed her eyes and remembered at this time of year people would celebrate the winter solstice in China. In the northern part of China most people would make dumplings to eat while southern Chinese would eat rice dumplings, chicken soup and bean curd.
Emily sighed and pushed the door to her parents’ restaurant. They were busy working.“Maybe I should go just this once for Mum and Dad. They are so worried that I’m not making any friends.” Emily went over and tied an apron (围裙) around her waist. As she was washing dishes, she told her mother that she had been invited to a party on Friday night. Mum smiled, saying Emily might be happy in their new home. Emily nodded, thinking Casper could never be her home.
On Friday evening, Dad drove Emily to the party. Jennifer met her at the door and led her into the dining room. Six kids from her classes were seated around the table, on which small cookie dough was sitting— they were making cookies! Wow, Emily loved making food! For this part of the party, she could be herself! She asked for some raw meat and cabbage and decided to make some dumplings. As she was making the dumpling wrappers, Jennifer wondered how she did it. The others joined, staring at Emily with admiration. Emily felt a sense of joy welling up inside her. Maybe I could fit in here—a little, she thought.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
