I’m
a
15-year-old
( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )
girl
from
Indonesia.
In
my
country,
there
are
hundreds
of
languages
spoken.
But
sadly,
we
don’t
speak
English,
which
is
a
very
important
language
in
the
world.
Many
people
in
my
country
are
hungry
to
learn
English.
English
can
be
heard
in
coffee
shops
and
shopping
malls
in
the
capital,
Jakarta.
But
outside
of
the
city
and
the
island
of
Bali,
learning
English
can
be
a
struggle.
It
is
even
more
difficult
for
young
people
who
come
form
poor
families
on
far-away
islands.
And
I’m
one
of
them.
Luckily,
I
heard
about
( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )
the
English
Access
Microscholarship
Program,
an
after-school
English
class,
one
year
ago.
Known
simply
as
“Access”,it
provides
two
years
of
free
English
classes
for
poor
young
people
around
the
world.
One
of
the
largest
Access
programs
is
in
my
country
with
about
1,000
students.
I
was
lucky
enough
to
become
a
member
of
the
program.
Now
I
can
learn
English
through
its
after-school
English
class.
Earlier
this
( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )year,
several
American
English
teachers
organized
a
series
of
English
language
summer
camps
across
Indonesia.
I
went
to
one
of
them.
At
the
camp,
we
learned
about
American
culture.
We
also
shared
local
songs
and
dances
with
the
American
teachers.
We
had
great
fun.
More
importantly,
I
learned
more
about
the
Americans.
Before
going
( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )
to
camp,
I
always
thought
that
the
Americans
were
difficult
to
approach
and
that
they
believed
they
were
superior
(出众的)to
others
and
they
might
have
a
negative
opinion
toward
Muslims.
But
through
my
camp
experience,
I
have
beamed
that
the
Americans
are
just
like
us.
I
have
also
learned
that
they
are
very
friendly
and
easy-going.
I
really
want
to

Access.
Without
it,
I
would
have
had
no
opportunity
to
learn
English,
not
to
mention
knowing
what
I
know
about
the
Americans.

Humor
is
something
w
( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )hich
cannot
always
be
understood
in
another
country.
What
about
when
both
countries
speak
the
same
mother
tongue
Does
that
mean
they
share
the
same
sense
of
humor
or
differences
still
occur
Let’s
take
the
example
of
Britain
and
America.
Time
and
time
again,
people
say
that
Brits
and
Americans
don't
“get”
each
other’
s
sense
of
humor.
It
is
often
argued
( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )
that
one
of
the
most
common
differences
between
the
British
and
American
sense
of
humor
is
that
Americans
don’t
understand
irony
(反语).Simon
Pegg
explores
this

depth
in
his
article
What
Are

He
concludes
that
this

I
am
inclined
to

with
him.
One
of
the
major
di
( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )fferences
seems
to
be
how
often
both
nations
use
irony.
Brits
use
irony
on
a
daily
basis,
while
it
is
not
the
base
of
American
humor.
I
think
Americans
understand
British
irony
most
of
the
time;
what
they
don’t
understand
is
the
need
to
use
it
so
frequently.
When
Americans
use
irony,
they
tend
to
state
that
they
are
“only
kidding”.
They
feel
the
need
to
make
a
joke
more
obvious
than
Brits
do;
maybe
this
results
from
a
fear
of
offending
people.
Certain
America
( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )n
comedies
have
acquired
huge
success
in
Britain.
Therefore,
although
there
are
differences
between
both
comic
styles,
there
is
still
an
appreciation
and
understanding
of
the
other
sense
of
humor.
Both
the
British
and
American
versions
of
the
comedy
The

hugely
successful
on
both
sides
of
the

Both
shows
have
their
own
cultural
differences,
yet
they

a
lifestyle
which
both

can
relate

The

They

They

But
the

of
the

have
made
an
improvement
to
it.
The

opens
up
into
two

that
are

connected

locked

The
most

commonly

today

Other
strategies
involve
using

But
now
the

help

the
problem.
Now,while

the

They’re

It

The

tips.
37
Simply
being

and
providing
her
with

Keep
it
simple;
tell
her
you
are
there
for
her.
Be
honest.
If
you
don’t
know
what
to
say,
tell
her
that.
Sometimes
people

don’t

38
Don’t

If

Whether

39
Avoid
putting

you
have
collected
the
information
for
her
and

things
you

time.
Avoid
asking,
“What
can
I
do
for
you”
You
might
think
you
are
being
helpful.
40
Instead
of
giving
your
friend
another
difficult
decision
to
make,
simply
get
on
with
doing
something
that
will
make

A.
Tell
your

she

you.
B.
