如re?sponsi?bility。

Ⅰ.阅读理解

In the middle of the night, a baby chimpanzee is having nightmares.Chantal, his caretaker, tries to calm him down. She works at the Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Centre, in the Republic of the Congo, in Africa. The chimp's name is George. He was taken from his mother by hunters. Finally, he was rescued and taken to the sanctuary, where Chantal helped him make friends with other chimpanzees.“We rescue chimps from terrible conditions and help them to live in the wild like other chimpanzees,” Chantal said, “They need to learn chimp behavior.”
Chimpanzees meet a lot difficulties because of people's cutting down forest and illegal wildlife trade.Their population, numbering in the millions a century ago, could be down to 172,000.This makes the work of the Tchimpounga Sanctuary even more important.
When opening in 1992, Tchimpounga had space for 60 chimpanzees. It has been made larger to the size of a hundred football fields, and now provides home for around 150 chimps. Many live on islands with thick forest in the Kouilou River. In that environment, the chimps are prepared for a possible return to the wild. The sanctuary also works with the government to reduce illegal trade in animals.Tchimpounga's head veterinarian Rebeca Atencia said, “We have effectively reduced the arrival of orphan chimpanzees to Tchimpounga. We've received only one orphan chimp over the past three years.”
The chimps have shown that they understand the sanctuary staff's efforts.“Saving the life of a chimpanzee is very gratifying,” Atencia says.“Chimpanzees know when you've helped them or saved their life.Sometimes, they thank you with a hug.”
As the leader of Jane Goodall Institute (JGI), Atencia also works with people who live near the sanctuary. These people depend on the forest for food and building houses, and their growing population is a danger to chimps.JGI helps the people in these places get healthcare, clean water, and others. This makes them less dependent on the area's natural resources and reduces illegal trade in chimps. At present, there are islands within the sanctuary where the chimps can be safe from wild chimpanzees and hunters. And they're still under the care of the sanctuary staff.

Many wild animals are facing the danger of disappearance, because the environment that they are living in has changed greatly. At the same time, man is killing off species just for getting their fur, skin, horns, teeth and meat. As a result of ivory-poaching which caused the population to drop 20% between 2006 and 2015, elephants are among the most endangered animals in the world. But now in the Grumeti Game Reserve in Tanzania the elephants wander freely and safely as everyone wears a tracking collar. Rangers in the operation room depend on the Earth Ranger Tech Platform (ERTP) to follow each elephant. In its early stages of development, the platform was named the Domain Awareness System or DASS.
What we do with DASS is that we monitor every collared elephant and we also input data which in turn helps us make decisions and plan operations. When dangers are detected, the system warns the rangers who are following the data. DASS makes rangers always behind and after the elephant even if it has been killed or has been injured. Rangers are really able to predict and get ahead of the danger.
Rangers not only save the lives of the elephants, but they also protect the workers in the reserve from poachers. Frequent and fast communication with the operation room makes the rangers' tasks easier and safer. The developers hope Earth Ranger will provide conservationists in the region with the network where they need to work together and save Africa's wildlife.

D.Because the elephants are endangered.
解析:B 细节理解题。根据第一段中的“But now in the Grumeti Game Reserve in Tanzania the elephants ...to follow each elephant.”可知,坦桑尼亚的大象之所以没有被猎杀是因为大象受到ERTP的保护。
6.What is the advantage of ERTP
A.Dangers can be known before rather than after they appear.
B.It will know elephants are in danger after they have been injured.
C.Elephants can be protected from being injured.

When it comes to clever dogs, it's hard to imagine a faster, sharper or braver dog than Bear.
This little wonder has made himself quite famous for his special ability to smell out injured and homeless koalas in places that just went through forest fires.
What he wasn't expecting was becoming an international superstar, attracting thousands of followers on social media and even catching the attention of some Hollywood stars!
“We had special fireproof shoes made for him to protect his feet from being hurt,” explains proud owner and wildlife campaigner Tyson Mayr, 34, who teamed up with Bear after looking for a way to help animals influenced by the forest fires.
“Bear's so strong, but the moment he gets up close and personal with a little one he's saved, he gets quite sad.”
Tyson reached out to the International Fund for Animal Welfare, which directed him to the Detection Dogs for Conservation program at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, where Bear was in training.
“I'll never forget meeting Bear for the first time, looking into those beautiful blue eyes.Even today I tear up because he is the real deal,” says Tyson, adding that Bear was forced to leave his first owners because of his obsessive-compulsive disorder.
“Firsthand, I quickly saw just how much of an influence he was having. He runs for 10 km without even a drink stop, and can save up to 50 koalas in a day.”
“The koalas know he's out there to save them,” adds Tyson.“I think they'd agree with the rest of us that dogs really do make life so much better!”

Andie Ang's personal interest in monkeys was awakened when she was a child. In 1995, Ang's father saw some sailors mistreating a small young African monkey and brought it home.
Just ten at the time, Ang clearly remembers her excitement on first seeing the golden-furred little monkey. She named him Ah Boy and they soon became close companions. “I would cycle through the neighbourhood and Ah Boy would always follow me, ” recalls Ang. “Neighbours would stop to look and comment,‘Oh,so cute!’” Ah Boy quickly developed a daily routine of climbing onto Ang's shoulders to pull her hair apart in search of anything that shouldn't have been there.
But as the years passed, the family became unable to care for the monkey, so Ang turned to the Internet for help. After a complicated and costly process, the day arrived for Ang and Ah Boy to say goodbye. It was a tearful parting for her. Later that day, Ang made up her mind to study monkeys. “The time we spent together made me want to know more about monkeys, the threats to them, and how we can help them,” she says.
After getting a Life Sciences degree,Ang went on to complete a PhD in Biological Anthropology with a specialty in Raffles' banded langurs,a critically endangered species which hadn't been studied for 15 years.
Today, she spends hours in Singapore's Central Catchment Nature Reserve, where the entire local population of Raffles' banded langurs can be found, doing field research in the forest. Her group has done lots of things to preserve this species, identifying and naming every monkey living in residential areas. They enjoyed discovering their individual personalities. As a result of Ang's work and growing support among locals, the community has come to better understand the value of native wildlife. The future of this small population of Raffles' banded langurs has become a lot more certain.

On an early morning in 2018,Emily Denstedt and two other Gorilla Doctors walked into the thick Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. They were searching for Buzinza, the head of the Rushegura mountain gorilla group, because they feared she had broken her arm.
Mountain gorillas move around a lot. This was the team's second day on Buzinza's trail. The doctors had spent all of the previous morning and afternoon tracking the gorilla's family, only to have Buzinza climb into a treetop when they finally saw her. She stayed there until nightfall—too late and too dark for a checkup.
The team was luckier the next day, however. They had to push through the forest for only a few minutes before coming upon Buzinza and the rest of her family. She was on the ground eating leaves.
Gorilla Doctors is an international group of about 25 wildlife veterinarians, biologists and support staff working to keep the world's 1,000 mountain gorillas from going extinct. The group serves the health needs of the animals living in this forest.
A week ago, the trackers responsible for monitoring the Rushegura gorilla group noticed that Buzinza hadn't used her right arm for several days.“We were worried that she might have a fracture,”Denstedt said.
When they found Buzinza on that second day of searching, the team slowly took out their medical supplies. Denstedt gently placed Buzinza's injured arm on an X-ray plate. The picture that appeared showed there was no fracture. Instead, Buzinza was suffering from osteomyelitis, a bone infection.“That type of condition is serious,” Denstedt said. “Without treatment, she would likely die.”
The treatment took about an hour. As she worked,Denstedt spoke quietly to Buzinza “You're all right. You're fine.”
“It's hard to know how much they really feel when we are touching them. But you still find yourself saying these things,”Denstedt explained.
Trackers and field veterinarians monitored Buzinza over the next five weeks and continued to treat her with medications.“We don't have any X-rays after treatment, so I don't know what the bone looks like now,but Buzinza is doing a lot better,”Denstedt said.“She's climbing again.”

Adrian Rodriquez found the purse outside a supermarket in Chula Vista CA. Using the address on the driver's license (驾照) inside the purse, Adrian drove to the house and knocked on the front door.
The purse belonged to Eliana Martin, a former roommate of Melina Marquez. Martin had not changed her address since her recent move, so the purse was brought to Marquez's home. Marquez was not at home when Adrian arrived. He left it with a relative at the house, and their dialogues were recorded by Marquez's camera by chance. I looked into the camera later, and I thought to myself “Oh my dear. He's such a young kid. We need to find him and thank him,” recalled Marquez. Roadkill, the killing of an animal by a car hitting it on the road, is a serious problem in the United States. In the U.S. alone, there are more than a million car accidents per year involving wildlife. For many species, it is the leading cause of death. In addition, major roads can separate animal populations and destroy their habitats. Animals lose access to large areas of their habitats, which makes it much harder for many animals to find food and a mate.
As people have become more aware of the danger to humans and animals, animal crossings are becoming more common. The crossings can come in many forms. The type depends on the species that need to cross and the geographic features of the land. The most common forms are bridges, overpasses and tunnels. Planners are increasingly including them when they design highways and road improvements. The crossings greatly reduce the number of crashes, provide a safe corridor for animals and reconnect animal habitats.
Wildlife bridges are usually covered in native plants. In the United Kingdom, people often call them “green bridges”. The idea is to make the crossing look like a natural part of the landscape, so animals will cross there.
The idea was first developed in France in the 1950s. It took_off_in the Netherlands, where more than 600 crossings have been built. The Dutch built the world's longest animal crossing, the Natuurbrug Zanderij Crailoo, which is more than a half mile.

The words “protect animals” appear everywhere in books and on screens, because some animals are in danger of dying out.But sometimes the reality can be a little different from what people read or watch.
About 300 black bears were killed in Florida, the US, in October, 2015.It's been the first bear hunt since 1994.
Animal protection groups protested this decision. But local officials explained that the black bear population had grown to 3,500 and become a menace to local people. In the past two years, bears have hurt at least four people in Florida.
This brings an old question back into the spotlight—which is more important, protecting animals or protecting people's interests
This question is asked in other countries too.In Switzerland, a wolf was sentenced to death by the Swiss government months ago. This is because the wolf killed 38 sheep and local people lost a lot of money.Days ago in China, three old men were arrested for killing a serow (鬣羚), a protected species. But they insisted they didn't know about this and killed the animal because it ruined their crops.
However, these stories don't always mean that animal protection stops due to human interests, especially involving economic development.A man named Zhou Weisen set up a wild animal base in Guilin, Guangxi. He saved over 170 tigers and 300 bears. But his base also offered jobs to local people.
“There may never be a standard answer to the question of whether we should give more attention to the environment or human development,” said Robert May, a British biologist at Oxford University.“But we shouldn't push either one to the side, as the future is hanging in the balance.”

Should We Create More National Parks to
Save Endangered Animals
Don't you find it worrying that more and more species of animals are in real danger of becoming extinct?__16___ And I think the best way to do this is for governments to create more national parks.
__17__ If this environment is destroyed—for example, when farmers clear a forest for new fields, or trees are cut down to make profits—many animals are unable to survive, and more species are likely to become extinct.
In addition, national parks protect animals from the danger of being hunted.A major reason why many species are endangered is that these animals are killed by hunters. They hunt animals to make money.__18__
On the other hand, some people fight against the creation of national parks because they consider it is wrong to interfere with nature. They believe that wild animals are happier living in their natural environment.__19__ They also point out that a few species are more likely to produce young animals in the wild than in national parks.
All in all, these disadvantages are far less important than the benefits of national parks.__20__ As a matter of fact, they protect animals from their greatest enemies, that is, human beings.
A.To begin with, animals are important to humans.
B.Some hunters even hunt animals simply for sport.
C.I personally believe that we must save these animals.

Dear Friends,
Wild animals are in trouble. They're losing their homes, facing hunters, and struggling with climate change.
But we can help.We need to do a few things to keep animals safe.We can make more places where they can live without being bothered. We should also stop people from hunting them illegally and selling them. And we can try to use things that don't hurt animals' homes.Saving animals isn't just about keeping cute animals around. It's about keeping the world in balance.Every animal helps keep things working right. So let's all do our part to help animals. We can tell others about the problem, help groups that save animals, and make choices that are good for the Earth.

It was in a small town in England at one cold night. An old farmer was driving his horses to the barn (牲口棚) when he heard a voice saying,“Excuse me,sir. May I sleep in your barn tonight?” It was from a young soldier called Jack. Quietly standing there, tired and cold,he was waiting for an answer. But the old farmer said rudely,“No,I don't want anybody like you to stay in my barn. You had better go away.”
Jack sadly turned away, wondering where he would go next. Suddenly he felt a light tap on his shoulder. It was the young boy who had been working for the old farmer. The boy said,“I know where you can get help. Just go down this road to the first little cabin you come to. There lives Mrs. Smith, who is very kind and is always willing to help those who need it.”
Oh,what warmth filled Jack's heart,“Thank you very much!” There was at least somebody who cared about him. He quickly reached the cabin and gently knocked on the door. The door opened and the lady inside said,“Good evening. Were you looking for me ”
Jack answered,“Are you Mrs. Smith?I was told that you might offer a place to a homeless poor soldier for a night's stay.” She said,“Sure!Do come in!You look as though you are nearly frozen.” Mrs. Smith shared her simple meal with Jack in the warm room. Then with a thankful heart,he went to sleep on a pile of clean hay Mrs. Smith had prepared for him.
The next morning, the kind woman cooked him a warm breakfast. She also gave him a small sum of money to help him travel farther. As he left her house,he thanked her for her kindness, and she prayed for him.
