Growing up, I was scared of being the center of attention. As the quiet daughter of a military family that moved every two years, I struggled to make friends across three different countries. My accent shifted awkwardly between British and American English, making classroom readings a nightmare. Determined to break free from my shell, I joined my high school drama club—a decision that terrified me more than moving to a new neighborhood.
The first month felt impossible. While others memorized lines effortlessly, I stumbled over self-introduction, my palms sweating under the stage lights. Our director’s improvisation (即兴) exercises were the worst. She’d shout unexpected plots like “You’re an astronaut discovering aliens!”, giving us ten seconds to react. My mind would blank with a lump in my throat.
Yet week after week, something changed. The supportive laughter of my peers replaced my fear of embarrassment. By junior year, I landed a supporting role in our town, delivering lines without trembling. The real breakthrough came during a snowstorm performance when our lead actor fell ill. With only an hour’s notice, I stepped into the role and remembered every line.
This courage spilled into other areas. I began leading history class discussions and volunteered as a tour guide for exchange students. At university, I joined a debate club, using my drama-trained voice to argue environmental policies. Last month, I even hosted a charity auction (拍卖) for 50 guests—something my 15-year-old self would consider unimaginable.
Do I still get nervous Absolutely. But I’ve learned that imperfection connects us. When I mispronounced during the auction, the crowd chuckled warmly, not cruelly. Now I view each stumble not as failure, but proof that I’m daring to speak up.
24.What made the author uncomfortable during classroom activities
A.She frequently moved house. B.She met language confusion.
C.She hated reading class. D.She lacked team spirits.
25.What does the underlined word “stumbled over” in the second paragraph mean
A.Fell over suddenly. B.Spoke out freely.
C.Repeated words constantly. D.Kept in mind easily.
26.How did drama club participation affect the author’s later life
A.It affected her academic performance. B.It developed her painting skills.
C.It caused serious performance anxiety. D.It increased her social confidence.
27.What does the auction incident show about the author’s growth
A.She avoids challenging events. B.She focuses on others’ faults.
C.She accepts human imperfection. D.She prioritizes financial success.
New evidence suggests that studying Chinese and learning to write Chinese characters may train cognitive (认知的) abilities, which are not developed by learning other languages and writing systems.
A study conducted by researchers from the UK’s Wellcome Trust found that people who speak Chinese use both temporal lobes (颞叶) of their brain to understand the language. This is very different from English-language speakers who use only the left temporal lobe. Speakers of Chinese use intonation (语调) to tell between completely different meanings of particular words, which needs stronger cognitive abilities.
Besides, the practice of handwriting, especially of Chinese characters, will aid the development of motor skills, learning shapes and letters and will keep the mind sharp. Through the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, researchers found that neural (神经的) activity in children who practiced printing letters by hand was more strengthened than those who just looked at pared with English, mostly written in line and from left to right, Chinese characters have more complex in structure (复杂的结构). Their writing involves strokes (笔画) in all four directions: up, down, left, and right. The movement of the fingers and hand helps improve neural activity in the working, thinking, and memory of the brain of the learners.
Evidence also suggests that there is a connection between the learning of Chinese and math skills. Researchers from New Zealand noticed that Asian children educated in their own languages appear to have gained a greater understanding of math ideas than English-speaking children. During the natural learning process of Chinese, the student is learning basic math ideas. Math skills are included in character writing because it includes skills such as counting, grouping, ordering, and identifying similarities and differences.
While the research on the relationship between the learning of Chinese and cognition is not yet fully clear, there is good evidence to suggest that learning Chinese tones and characters represents an added challenge to language learning.
28.What is the text centred on
A.Why Asian children are better at math test.
B.Why Chinese is a difficult language to learn.
C.How learning Chinese benefits our cognition.
D.How Chinese writing differs from English writing.
29.What does the study by UK’s Wellcome Trust show
A.English speakers should learn Chinese.
B.Chinese has more intonations than English.
C.Using Chinese needs a higher-level brain activity.
D.Mastering different meanings of Chinese is difficult.
30.Why is learning Chinese beneficial to solving math problems
A.They need quite different cognitive abilities. B.Chinese writing looks like math symbols.
C.Chinese children naturally do well in math. D.They share several key cognitive abilities.
31.How is the text mainly developed
A.By offering supporting findings. B.By comparing former research.
C.By discussing problems and solutions. D.By listing advantages and disadvantages.
Dolphins are much more intelligent than humans previously thought. Scientists have recently discovered that bottle-nosed dolphins can identify themselves in the mirror — much like you and I can!
When you see a zit (青春痘) on your face, what do you do Go to the mirror time and again, and wonder what it is still doing there. Well, this is exactly what two male bottle-nosed dolphins, Presley and Tab, do as well. So, these lovable aquatic animals (水栖动物) are not just sailors, friends, but they are also aware of their bodies — almost like humans!
A Reuters news agency report in The Telegraph newspaper reports says that Presley and Tab stay in a pool with reflective glass walls in the New York Aquarium. Researchers in the wildlife Conservation society’s Osborn Laboratories of Marine science noticed that when Presley and Tab saw their own reflections, they did not seem to think that they were looking at another dolphin.
Dolphins are very social creatures, and are friendly with humans as well as their own kind. This got the researchers thinking. Perhaps the dolphins identified their own images So they decided to find out. Using non-toxic (无毒的) ink, they made marks on different parts of the dolphins’ bodies, changing the place every week. Every time their bodies were marked, the dolphins made more trips to the mirror than usual. If the ink mark was on their tummy (肚子), they would expose their tummy to the mirror and look at it for a long time.
Now doesn’t that sound familiar Imagine the dolphins wondering — “Now where did that mark come from I wonder how long it’s going to stay ” Till now, only the great apes like the chimps, the gorillas and the orangutans have displayed this quality of identifying their images in the mirror. All other animals have failed this test.
The researchers feel that these findings may increase human understanding towards dolphins, which are being hunted and killed in great numbers. Dolphin fins are considered to be a very delicious dish in several south-East Asian countries.
32.What have scientists discovered about bottle-nosed dolphins
A.They can recognize their bodies in the mirror.
B.They tend to have human awareness.
C.They love to see the reflections of their bodies.
D.They build social networks with humans and their own kind.
33.How did the researchers carry out their experiment
A.They communicated more with the dolphins.
B.They made the dolphins trip more to the mirror.
C.They drew special symbols on the dolphins’ bodies.
D.They made the dolphins expose their tummy to the mirror.
34.Which statement can Not be inferred from the text
A.Dolphins are not being protected well.
B.Dolphins care much more about their images.
C.Dolphins get along well with humans.
D.Dolphins are as smart as the great apes like the chimps.
35.What’s the best title of the text
A.Dolphins: An Endangered species in Need of Attention
B.Dolphins: social Beings with unique Communication skills
C.Dolphins: Aquatic Animals Fond of Their own self-reflection
D.Dolphins: smart Creatures Capable of self-recognition in Mirrors
Everyone is born into a family, but not everyone gets a healthy one. Why is family important What kind of impact does it have on a person in their childhood and as a grown-up Here are four reasons why family is important:
1. Families set the stage for future relationships.
The very first relationships a child has are with their parents and any siblings (兄弟姐妹). 36 It's often not a decision they are aware of, but people often choose partners and friends based on how similar they are to their family.
2. During hard times, people need a family they can depend on.
37 This can be emotional or financial (情感的或金钱的) support. Someone going through hard times will turn to their family if they trust them to provide encouragement and love.
3. Quality time with family is connected to better academic performance.
Columbia University did a series of studies on family dinner time. One study showed that kids who ate dinner with their family less than three times were twice as likely to get Cs or below in school. 38 Of course, there are other things at play, but families that value dinners together likely value other positive family communications.
4. 39
Families are the first place where children learn how to manage their emotions and communicate with others. Parents are responsible for guiding their children and providing life lessons that will be remembered for years to come. 40
A.Families teach important life lessons.
B.When life gets hard, people need support.
C.When families are strong, communities are strong.
D.These lessons form a big part of a person's worldview.
E.Family relationships are connected to a person's health.
F.These relationships provide a model for what future relationships will look like.
G.On the other hand, kids who had family dinners 5-7 times a week did much better.

六、书面表达
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给的段落开头句续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My love for dance began when I was very young and I would dream to be a star dancer from time to time. With the drama festival approaching, the school’s drama club had released a notice for the dancer audition (试镜) for The Twelve Dancing Princesses. And of course I was the first one to sign up.
As I left the stage after my audition at school, I could feel it. The power. The future. I knew that someday when dancers’ magazines wrote about me, they would say this moment was when my rise to a star began.
My ballet slippers hurt my feet, but I figured that was helpful. In The Twelve Dancing Princesses, the princesses danced all night so they probably had foot pain, too. My performance was more genuine (真诚的) because of my pain. I needed to show my devotion even when I wasn’t on stage, so I approached Mr. Ellison, the drama club advisor. He told me that casting (角色分配) will be posted tomorrow. “Thank you, sir,” I said, using the almost British pronunciation of Hollywood stars in the 1940s. I was so sure that Mr. Ellison would cast me as a princess.
The next morning, I went to read the cast list. The twelve princesses were first, by number. I scanned from One to Twelve, but none by me. At the bottom of the casting list, my name finally appeared. My role was a really small one, an old woman who helped a soldier, not one of the princesses! I was desperately disappointed. Mr. Ellison must have made a mistake! No one else in the school had my skills or preparation!.
I found him in his classroom, but he insisted there was no mistake and emphasized that every role in a play was important. Unable to accept the fact, I burst into tears. Mr. Ellison managed to calm me down and encouraged me to have a try in the rehearsal (排练).
The next day, I dragged (拖拽) myself to the rehearsal. Unwilling to play such an insignificant role, I practiced dancing absentminded (心不在焉的). Noticing my behaviour, Mr Ellison and my classmates encouraged me to cheer up. Gradually I began to change my perspective. After all it was an opportunity for me to show myself on the stage, so I decided to embrace it. Over the following days, I devoted myself to practicing and my performance improved steadily. With each rehearsal, I found joy in contributing to the story and eagerly anticipated the day of the actual performance.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为80个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

M: Let's make that clear so people understand why we all need bees.
W: Now, I found a report that says a lot of bees are dying right now. The report has a lot of statistics about population numbers. Should we use that
M: Well, I’m worried those statistics might be confusing. Mr. Lee said we have to show that we’ve done some research, and that’s important for our grades.
W: OK. Maybe we could just put some of the statistics in a diagram.
M: Let's do that. And we could show some photos of bees.

【原文】
Hi, my name is Jack. I like my senior high school life. I’m a Grade 10 student. I’d like to talk about my courses. On Mondays, I have four classes in the morning and two classes in the afternoon. The first class is math. I like math. It’s easy. There are twenty-three students in my math class, including a few exchange students who come from different nations. Chemistry is a bit boring, and there are twenty students in that class. The teacher likes to wear formal clothes and he looks nice. My English class is small. Our English teacher always gives great lectures and I think it’s fun to speak English. Science is the biggest class. There are thirty students in that class— twenty male students and ten female students. Science is very hard, though. Each class, we have a test. I don’t like that! The first class in the afternoon is physics and I like it best. The last class of the day is music, and we are active in that class.

67.读后续写
Version1: Finally, the great day arrived, and “the old woman” couldn’t wait to get on stage. As the curtains opened, a rush of excitement filled me. I delivered my lines with conviction (坚定), feeling more alive on stage than I had ever been. The audience laughed at my humorous lines, and I felt a sense of accomplishment. When the final curtain fell, the applause was deafening (震耳欲聋的). Mr. Ellison’s words had been right — every role was important. I had found my place in the spotlight, not as a princess, but as an old woman who helped a soldier. And it was enough.
Version2: Finally, the great day arrived, and “the old woman” couldn’t wait to get on stage. The spotlight hit me when I stepped onto the stage, and every movement flowed naturally. The audience cheered while I flawlessly danced and confidently delivered my lines. I really enjoyed the moment by turning a small role into a big one. Afterwards, Mr. Ellison praised me for my performance. It was at that moment that I realized that I would continue pursuing my dream of being a dancer, and that every role, no matter how small, was an opportunity to shine.
