Book Club

We will also be working closely with the media centre and technology department to work on projects to improve the technology use at NEMS. Finally, we are also in charge of (负责) putting together and releasing (发布) the daily video reports. The call out meeting is in May during East time.
Yearbook
The Yearbook staff (工作人员) is chosen at the end of each school year and is open to 8th grade students. Staff is chosen before leaving for summer break based upon recommendations and quality of the student’s application. Yearbook meets during East time to put together the yearbook. The staff will create and be responsible for taking photographs at sports events and club meetings.

Walking into school on the first day of sixth grade, my legs felt weak and my hands were shaking. I was always nervous on the first day of school. But this was my last first day of primary school, and I had never had a male teacher before. Somehow, I knew this school year would be different, but I had no idea the lifelong influence it would have on me.
Mr. Tony Harrison quickly soothed (安抚) my uneasiness with his friendly welcome and a big smile on his face. “Welcome to sixth grade! Take any seat,” he said. Mr. H, he preferred to be called, was young, energetic and showed happiness with his smiling face and cheerful voice. I chose a seat near the front of the classroom. My mum always told me sitting in the back encouraged trouble, besides I was also nearsighted.
Mr. H was an encouraging teacher and he made learning exciting with his fun ideas. I had always loved school, but somehow Mr. H made school even better. It did not matter if you were the best or worst student in the class, he made you feel special.
Smiley faces were his trademark. He always put a smiley face on the chalkboard, homework assignments and test papers. When he signed my yearbook, he added a smiley face. I am sure he did the same in everyone’s book. At the end of the school year, Mr. H gave each student a yellow, enamel pin-on(珐琅别针) smiley face. Years later, when I saw my first smiley face emoji, I immediately thought of Mr. H.
I realised Mr. H’s influence on me when I started my first job in high school. Even as a part-timer working in the mail room, I had the ability to influence others and make their day. Mr. H taught many students and adults during his lifetime. His cheerful outlook and kindness left a positive influence on me and countless others.

Do you sometimes feel too afraid to try new things If you want to grow and get better, you need to take risks and challenge yourself. But your brain often tells you to stay safe. It might say, “Don’t bother trying something new.” Even when these thoughts aren’t reasonable, our anxiety can still win. Instead of thinking about the good things that could happen, we worry more about “What if something goes wrong ”
Avoiding all risks might seem smart, but it can make you feel unhappy. The problem is that we often make decisions based on feelings, not facts. We think, “The more scared I feel, the riskier it is.” But feelings aren’t always reasonable. If we knew how to think about risks clearly, we’d know which risks are worth taking. For example, trying a new hobby like painting might feel daunting at first, but it could bring you joy and new skills.
Whether you’re afraid to change your job or too nervous to ask a friend for coffee, learning to take “good risks” can improve your life. Here are good ways to help.
Balance feelings with facts. Many times, we think fear means something risky. But that’s not true. For example, driving a car feels safe because we do it every day, but giving a speech in public might make your heart beat fast. Yet the fact shows that car accidents are much more common than getting hurt while speaking! So before you avoid doing something scary, take three deep breaths and ask yourself, “What’s the real risk here ”
Take steps to succeed. You can do many small things to lower risks. If you’re nervous about a test, make a study plan and review each day — this helps you feel more prepared. It’s okay to feel butterflies in your stomach when you try something new. Facing fear helps build your mental muscle, just like exercising builds physical muscle. So, taking smart risks helps you become mentally stronger.

Slang (俚语) words are specific words or phrases that have a cultural meaning that is different from the basic meaning. For example, when you “keep your cool”, you are not talking about the temperature. You are saying that you will stay calm under pressure.
Cool slang changes all the time. Some slang examples, like “what’s up ”, have been around so long that they have become idioms (习语), or common expressions where the meaning of certain word combinations (组合) are really different from their basic meaning. An example of an idiom is “out of the blue” to show something that happened without warning.
Other slang words are popular, or come from new music, TV, or movies, and are only used for a short time. Knowing how and when to use slang words or college slang will help you connect with and better understand American students.
As a general rule, you can use popular words and phrases now with your friends and classmates, but should use more formal English when speaking to professors and co-workers. If you use today’s slang in more formal settings, like at work, people might see you as rude (粗鲁的) or unprofessional.
Pop culture and youth culture tend to create new slang words and trends (趋势). Historically, that meant that the TV shows, pop and hip-hop music, movies, and video games popular with kids, teens, and young adults influenced today’s slang. While those forms of media still shape new slang words and cool slang, young people now tend to spend more time online — and with that change, the Internet, and especially social media, drive most of American slang in 2025.
While the Internet and pop culture have created common slang words around the country, keep in mind that different areas of the country may use different slang words. Wherever you decide to study, you’ll quickly hear the local slang — and it may even become part of your own vocabulary!
