In the summer of 2015, Brian Peterson and his wife Vanessa moved to Santa Ana, California. They lived on the fourth floor of an apartment. Almost every night, a homeless man stood on the street corner and shouted. The noise kept them awake and made them feel annoyed.
Every morning, Brian walked past the man on his way to work as a car designer but he never spoke to the homeless man. One day, Brian was reading a book about love and kindness. The loud noise from the street made him stop. The book told him to help others. So Brian went outside and said hello to the man.
The man’s name was Matt Faris. He came from Kentucky to California to find a job in music, but life was hard. He had lived on the streets for more than twenty years.
Brian remembered, “I saw something beautiful in his face, even though he had not showered for a long time. His story touched my heart.” Brian had not painted for eight years, but he asked Matt, “May I paint your picture ” Matt smiled and said, “Yes.”
That meeting started a new idea. Brian made a group called “Faces of Santa Ana”. It is a nonprofit group. Brian paints pictures of homeless people. With their permission, he sells the paintings and uses the money to help them.

There was an obvious difference in the presence of China’s athletes at this year’s Paris Olympic Games. Not only did they bring home gold, but they also showed just how much they were enjoying the spirit of competition.
At first sight, we might think that their calmness and enjoyment just come naturally. But digging a little deeper, we discover that their obvious ease is the result of countless hours of practice and hard work. They’ve sharpened their skills to the point where they can perform them almost without hesitation or doubt. This is what we call “muscle memory”, the body’s ability to perform tasks without thought. And with skill comes confidence.
Confidence plays a huge role in how athletes perform under pressure. Consider a basketball player taking a decisive free throw (罚球) in the final seconds of a game. The crowd is cheering; the game is on the line; and all eyes are on them. This is where confidence makes all the difference. An athlete who has practiced tirelessly and trusts in their abilities will approach the free throw with calmness and focus. Their confidence acts as a wall against the pressure, allowing them to perform as if they were in a practice session, rather than in front of thousands of fans.
The same idea holds true in other fields, too. Someone delivering a speech or a presentation that attracts the crowd with every word has often spent hours preparing and practicing. Their ease comes from knowing their material inside and out, and from having the confidence to share their knowledge. When we’re prepared and believe in our abilities, standing in front of a room full of people becomes less frightening and more like an opportunity to showcase our hard work.
Whether it’s in sports, our studies or our daily lives, the union of well-practiced skills and firm confidence is what allows true ease to be achieved. It enables us to face challenges calmly, even when the pressure is on. When we keep practicing and believe in ourselves, what once seemed difficult can become second nature.
8. What has led to the calmness and enjoyment of China’s athletes in Paris
A. Natural born calmness.
B. Support from the crowd.
C. Countless hours of practice.
D. High-tech sports equipment.
9. What does the underlined phrase “on the line” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Already over. B. Hard to win.
C. Just for fun. D. At a key moment.
10. How does the author develop his argument
A. By telling a story.
B. By describing details.
C. By giving examples.
D. By comparing different fields.
11. Which of the following would the author agree with
A. Natural talent is the only path to success.
B. Good skills and confidence create success.
C. Hard work can make up for lack of talent.
D. Confidence makes no difference under pressure.
D
A recent study suggests that vitamin D supplements could help protect telomeres (端粒), the protective caps at the ends of our chromosomes, which play a key role in aging. Telomeres act like the plastic tips of shoelaces, protecting DNA when cells (细胞) divide. Every time a cell divides, telomeres get shorter. When they become too short, cells can no longer divide and finally die. Shortened telomeres have been linked to aging-related illnesses like heart disease.
Vitamin D is well-known for its role in supporting bone health by helping the body take in calcium. It is especially important for children, teenagers, and people with dark skin or little sun exposure to keep healthy bones. Besides, vitamin D is important for the immune (免疫的) system. Early research also suggests it might protect against autoimmune illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis, although more studies are needed.
In a recent study by researchers from Augusta University in the US, 1,031 people aged65 and older took 2,000 IU (international units, a standard vitamin measurement) of vitamin D every day for five years. The results showed that the telomeres of the vitamin D group were preserved by 140 base pairs, compared to those of people who didn’t take vitamin D. Normally, telomeres shorten by around 460 base pairs over ten years, so the results suggest that vitamin D may have a meaningful protective effect.
However, some researchers warn that having extremely long telomeres may increase the risk of disease. There’s also no clear agreement on the best vitamin D dosage (剂量). The recommended intake is currently 600 IU for people under 70 and 800 IU for older adults, but some studies suggest that even 400 IU could be effective.
While these findings are promising, it’s still too early to start taking high dosages of vitamin D to slow aging. However, for those who are at risk for bone health issues, vitamin D is still a good choice.
12. What is the main role of telomeres according to the text
A. To speed up the aging process. B. To enable cells to grow quickly.
C. To help the body take in vitamin D. To protect DNA during cell division.
13. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The importance of bone health. B. How the immune system works.
C. The advantages of vitamin D. How we can build a strong body.
14. What can we know about vitamin D dosage
A. It depends on different people. B. It is agreed to be 2,000 IU daily.
C. 400 IU is the best dose for teenagers. D. Higher dosages lead to better protective effects.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Scientists Digs the Secret of Cells B. Vitamin D May Help Slow Aging
C. A Promising Market for Vitamin D D. A Growing Number of Aging People

I was helping my brother move from a teaching job after college. This was in the middle of nowhere in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He was driving his little pickup truck pulling a trailer (拖车) and I was driving my little truck, packed with his stuff.
It was a Sunday. I was driving along and my car just died. No warning, nothing. I pulled over on the side of a rural highway and waited for my brother to realize I wasn’t behind him anymore and turned around. After about 20 minutes, he found me, but neither of us knew very much about cars. Soon, a man from the nearby house came out, took one look at the engine and said, “Timing belt.”
We asked about pulling the car to the closest large town, which was 30 miles away. We realized it was going to be an expensive repair, even if the engine was OK. The man took a look at the situation — two broke kids in their early 20s just trying to get by in life. Then he said, “Well, it’s Sunday. Nothing’s gonna be open. My next-door neighbor is a mechanic (机修工). Let’s push the car down to my driveway and we’ll see what we can do.”
So that was exactly what we did. His neighbor called his friend at the auto parts store, who did a favor and got the parts needed, drove them 30 miles out to the house and well sat around telling stories while the car got fixed. The man’s son, a boy of about 9 or 10, was hanging around. He was extremely bored. There were no kids nearby his age, and he was desiring any kind of interaction, even with two guys in their 20s. The boy said, “Want to see my tree house ” He pointed to the woods out back. My brother and I looked at each other, saying, “Sure.”
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
We followed the boy through a narrow path in the woods.

【答案】Dear Jean,
I really like the idea of having an activity on the weekend. I prefer volunteering at the local community.
It can help us learn more about local life and people. We can do something useful, like helping the elderly with grocery shopping, teaching kids English, or cleaning the park. These small acts will make the community warmer. Through this, we can communicate better with locals, hear their stories, and make friends. It is a good chance to experience real community culture that we can get from textbooks. I’m sure we’ll have a meaningful weekend.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
We followed the boy through a narrow path in the woods.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】例文
We followed the boy through a narrow path in the woods. Sunlight shined through the tree top, casting shadows across the ground. His tree house, an attractive structure made of weathered wood and leaves, stood firmly among the trees, overlooking a small clearing. Inside, there were books and a collection of smooth stones, each one carefully selected. As we admired his “treasures”, his eyes lit up. He smiled with pride, talking excitedly about his adventures in the woods. We listened carefully, sharing laughter as he told his imaginative tales. Time flew, and when we returned, the mechanic gave a thumbs-up — our car was fixed.
Before leaving, we tried to pay, but they refused. The man stepped forward, placing a gentle hand on my shoulder. “Just pass it on,” he said with a warm smile. Touched by their kindness, we exchanged hugs and heartfelt thanks. As we drove away, I looked in the mirror at the house growing smaller, something forming in my throat, making me unable to speak and tears running down. That day taught me that in the most unexpected places, kindness appears, and that sometimes, the greatest treasures are the connections we make along the way.
