Year-12 student Noah Little has already sat his first Chinese-speaking exam and said it was “the easiest exam I’ve ever done”. That view is not surprising given the Wagga High School student loves language — so much so he has built a Chinese translation app.
Noah said his love of language was encouraged by his community. “Wagga is a place full of people from different cultures, and sometimes when I meet new people who have trouble speaking English I like to talk to them in their own language,” he said. “I also have a few Chinese friends so I think it will be cool to talk to them in their language.”
The 17-year-old started teaching himself Chinese around five years ago, before taking distance education classes at the start of Year 11. His language ability was also useful in his part-time job at a local Chinese restaurant, where he translated orders for the cooks and customers.
Noah said he also had a basic knowledge of seven other languages. It was while teaching himself languages that Noah got the idea of the translation tool. “I decided to make my own app because there weren’t many around — all the other apps were full of advertisements (广告) and the translation feature (功能) wasn’t powerful enough,” he said.
His app also includes a word of the day feature, lessons on how to write Chinese characters (汉字) and a news feed of important Chinese news.
He said learning computer programming to build the app had been like studying another language. With the end of school around the corner, Noah said he would like to pursue (追求) both his interests in computer programming and languages. “I’m planning to work for a year and save so I can go on to university as I really want to make a career (事业) out of one of these two topics.”

“Long time no see” is a very interesting sentence. When I first read this sentence from an American friend's e-mail, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.
Obviously, it is a word-by-word literal (字面意思的) translation of the Chinese greeting with ruined English grammar and structure! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too surprised to believe her. Her words could not convince me at all. So I did research on . To my surprise, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing “Long time no see.” This sentence has been widely used in e-mails, letters, newspapers, movies, books, or other possible places. Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that Americans use daily. Ironically, if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be corrected.
Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan’s movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood moviemakers successfully created a worldwide famous Chinese detective named “Charlie Chan” on wide screens. Detective Chan liked to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting (引用) Confucius. “Long time no see.” was his trademark... Soon after Charlie Chan, “Long time no see.” became a popular phrase in America thanks to the popularity of these movies.
Some scholars compare America to a huge melting pot. All kinds of cultures are mixed in the pot together, and they change the color and taste of each other. American Chinese, though a minority ethnic group (少数民族) in the United States, is also contributing some changes to the stew! Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed pot.
You can have some other examples besides adoption from Chinese, such as pizza from Italian, sushi from Japanese, and dejà vufrom French etc. There is a long list! Americans do not just simply borrow something from others. They will also modify it and make it their own, so you would not be surprised to find a tofu and peanut butter hamburger in a restaurant, or to buy a bottle of iced Chinese green tea with honey in a grocery store. Since Americans appreciate Chinese culture more and more nowadays, I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the future. In this way, the American’s melting pot keeps adding richness and flavor.
8. What did the writer himself feel surprised at
A. The Chinglish expression “Long time no see.”
B. So many literal translations of the expressions used in America.
C. “Long time no see.” is used as a standard American English greeting.
D. Finding out Americans use the expression every day.
9. What do the underlined words “melting pot” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. American changing cultures.

C. A kind of cooked dish.
D. Confucius’s words.
10. According to the passage, what can be inferred
A. Detectives translated the phrase “Long time no see”.
B. Cultures cannot be changed in the huge melting pot.
C. The huge melting pot greatly affects all kinds of languages.
D. Hollywood made “Long time no see” popular.
11. What is the main idea of the passage
A. Some Chinese expressions are introduced into English.
B. You’ll not be surprised at a tofu and peanut butter hamburger in a restaurant in America.
C. Some American expressions can be used in China.
D. American English keeps being enriched by different cultures.

Math is everywhere in our life, from working out the bill after dinner to your personal costs. While some people enjoy solving math problems, many others are afraid of the moment when they have to deal with numbers and feel really anxious. It might seem discouraging, but this “math anxiety” is quite common, and you’re far from being the only one who feels this way. Besides, our worries and fears don’t always show how able we are.
The reason for this problem often begins to appear in our childhood at school. Studies have shown that math teachers who feel nervous about teaching the subject can pass their anxiety to their students, and girls might be more affected by this anxiety. According to the Program for International Student Assessment, around 31% of 15 and 16-year-olds in 34 countries said that they felt very nervous when solving math problems, 33% said they got nervous doing math homework, and nearly60% worried that math classes would be difficult. Shulamit Kahn, from Boston University’s Questrom School of Business, told the BBC that providing students, especially girls, with good role models “is important, especially at a young age.” She believes the key is to have people, especially women who love teaching math, educate younger kids.
David Robson, writing for BBC Future, mentioned, “It’s unclear why math causes so much fear compared to other subjects like geography. But knowing there’s a right or wrong answer might make you more anxious about not doing well.”
And if we believe that we’re not “math people”, we may question about ourselves and avoid solving problems that we could deal with.
Researchers have been trying to work out why mental math can make us nervous. This fear might come from all kinds of sources, but some suggest that openly expressing your fears can weaken their control on you and encourage children to see math tests as challenges rather than threat (威胁). We need to have a positive view on math and give it another try.
12. What’s the main idea of paragraph 2
A. Girls are better at math than boys.
B. Math classes are difficult for everyone.
C. Students’ anxiety only comes from teachers.
D. Math anxiety in childhood affect students’ confidence.
13. What might happen if someone believes they’re not a “math person”
A. They will study math harder. B. They will doubt their abilities.
C. They will face challenges bravely. D. They won’t see math as a threat.
14. According to the last paragraph, what are children advised to do
A. Find the reasons of math fear positively.
B. Give up challenges to avoid anxiety actively.
C. Speak out their fears for improvement bravely.
D. Examine the reasons for math failure carefully.
15. What might be the best title of the passage
A. Math Anxiety: How to Fix It
B. Math Application: How to use Math
C. Math Learning: The Key to Success in All Fields.
D. Math Competition: Race between Boys and Girls.
