Two days ago, Mrs. Peterson told us that we needed to do a project on the environment (环境)
and make a report in class. And it needed to be finished in one month. I was afraid that I would never
finish the work.
I asked Mrs. Peterson for advice. She said, “Plan how you will finish each part of the homework
and write your plan down. Turn the homework into smaller pieces, and do not wait until the last minute
to start!”
When I went home from school, “Why do teachers give us so difficult homework ” I cried. “This

Organizing (整理) for a better life
Do you know what organizers do They help people tidy up their homes. Li Shan is one of them.
Five years ago, she left her job as a financial (财政的,金融的) worker because she wanted to do
something different. She decided to become an organizer. She thinks being an organizer is a cool job.

Barcodes, a kind of smart code, have changed how we shop. This 77 year old clever invention
makes buying things much faster and easier.

The story began in 1948 when engineers Norman Joseph Woodland and
Bernard Silver made the first barcode 26 years later, supermarkets started using it.
Before barcodes, supermarket workers needed to type prices ( 输入价格) by hand.
They had to spend much time and often made mistakes.

every day!
These black a nd white pictures tell important information about the products ( 产品 ), such as how
much they are, when they were made, where they come from and so on.
For store workers, barcodes are useful because they can tell what are in stock ( 有现货 ). For
example, if a store has 100 chocolate bars and sells 20, the workers will know that there are 80 left
thanks to barcodes. This saves workers hours of counting and makes sure there are no empty shelves.
But barcodes aren’t just for supermarkets. They help in many places. For example, libraries use
them to track ( 追踪 ) books and hospitals scan them to give patients the right medicine.
Now we have even smarter codes called QR codes. They can store much more information. To
see them, you need a mobile phone to scan! The future of QR codes looks even
more panies are working on “dynamic ( 动态的) QR codes” that
can change their information at any time. Some new QR codes can even work
without an Internet connection.

Art Class: A Colorful Haven (避风港) in My Junior High
My name is Mia, and I’m a student in Grade 7. Among all the subjects at school, art is my
favorite—it’s like a bright corner where I can use brushes and paints to show myself.
We have a great art teacher named Mrs. Evans. She’s a wonderful artist with a shelf full of her
own paintings. I love watching her paint. Last week in her class, she taught how to use orange and pink
