It was celebrated for the first time in 2013. On that day, we celebrated hundreds of “Happy Heroes”—those who did so much to bring happiness to others. They helped the homeless to live a comfortable life and the poor kids to go to school.

Last year, I didn’t like my English class. Every class was like a bad dream. The teacher spoke so quickly that I could hardly follow her most of the time. I was afraid to ask questions because of my poor pronunciation. I just hid behind my textbook and never said anything.
Then one day I watched an English movie named Toy Story. I fell in love with this exciting and funny movie! So I began to watch other English movies, too. Although I could not understand everything the characters said, their body language and the expressions on their faces helped me to get the meaning. I also realized I could get the meaning by listening for just the key words. Besides, I learned some useful sentences like “It’s a piece of cake” or “It serves you right”, I didn’t understand these sentences at first. Many Chinese students are good at English grammar, but their spoken English is so poor that they can’t speak in class or have a talk with others. There may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.
First, they fail to express themselves clearly because of a limited(有限的)vocabulary. The useful way is to enlarge their vocabulary. However, you can still communicate with others with a limited vocabulary, if you are active. Others will understand you with the help of your body language.
Second, they are worried about making mistakes. Because they are shy and nervous, sometimes they may make mistakes easily. Yet we should know what we aim at is FLUENCE(流利) not ACCURACY(精确) when speaking. So we should speak as quickly and well as we can, even though sometimes we may use a wrong word or tense(时态), but it doesn’t matter because others will still understand you.
The third reason is that they don’t pay enough attention to listening to what others are saying. So while you are speaking, you can't find the suitable topic or words to say. You have one mouth but two ears! What you hear is necessary for you to start speaking.
Fourth, most Chinese students are passive(被动的) language learners. They just sit there waiting for speaking chances, and don’t actively look for chances to improve their spoken English. All they can get is to accept the fact that their English remains poor.
So please be active from now on, try to catch every chance to speak wherever you go.

For both of them, the wish for a free life-style played a big part in the decision. In ancient times, people usually wrote from right to left in vertical columns(竖列). But now, we write from left to right in horizontal rows (横行). Why did this change This has to do with the writing tools and habits that people had at that time.
Before paper was created, people wrote on bamboos. They wrote from top to bottom on one piece and then another. These bamboos were connected together into one long passage and rolled up. People usually held it with their right hand and opened it with their left hand. Therefore, it is more convenient to start writing from the right-hand side.
In 1917, linguist(语言学家) Qian Xuantong wrote a letter to the New Culture Movement leader Chen Duxiu. He suggested writing Chinese from left to right. He said that if we used our right hands to write, it would be easier to begin from the left and more comfortable to read. However, his idea wasn’t widely accepted.
In the early 1950s, famous overseas Chinese businessman Chen Jiageng and Chinese writer Guo Moruo raised this advice again. They thought that the area seen from left to right was much wider than the area seen from up to down. In this way, writing and reading sideways will reduce eye fatigue(疲劳).

Scientists are preparing to produce the world’s first machine to clean up the largest area of ocean plastic. The system was first dreamed up by a teenage boy. In the past few months, they have been busy making it come true with all kinds of work.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is more than twice the size of France, and has at least 79,000 tons of plastic, according to a research. Most of it is from the fishing gear (装备) given up by ships.
This kind of terrible waste kills more than 100,000 whales, dolphins and other sea animals each year. But she didn’t look like most of the girls who played with them. Some people used to dislike Barbie. “Is that your idea of beauty ” they asked Mattel, the company behind Barbie.
Over the past few years, Mattel has been trying to make its dolls look more like people in real life. The new Barbie dolls show what it means to look like a Barbie, and tell children what real beauty is. Together with the new dolls, Barbie now includes 176 different dolls in all. There are both “perfect” dolls and “imperfect” ones such as a doll with vitiligo (白癜风), a doll with no hair, and a doll with a darker skin tone and a prosthetic limb (假肢). It’s hoped that children of all sizes, colors and abilities will see themselves.
Most people are happy about this change. A curvy (曲线优美的) black Barbie with an Afro (非洲式发型) and a Barbie who uses a wheelchair (轮椅) were top sellers for the brand last year. “The doll in a wheelchair encourages me a lot,” said a girl who has lost a leg.

Bicycles are used by people of all ages around the world. It's common in many cities to see thousands of bikes streaming down a street.
At first, only men rode bicycles. It was thought that only men could run machines, and that women wouldn't be able to control a bicycle. In the 1890s, though, with women's growing independence(独立), bicycles offered women a way to travel by themselves. Today, of course, men, women, and children ride bicycles.
Most bikes today have two wheels, but you've probably seen other kinds, too.
Some people start riding bikes that have three wheels. The third wheel makes the bike easier to balance. These bikes are called tricycles. As you've seen, the bi- in bicycle means "two". The tri- in tricycle means "three". Bikes with three wheels aren't just for young children. They matter to adults because bikes with three wheels can help move people or things. The most common kind of adult tricycle is the rickshaw(黄包车). Rickshaws are used as bike taxis in many parts of the world.
Some bikes also have only one wheel and no handlebars(把手). These bikes are called unicycles. The first part of the word, uni-, means "one". Riding a bike with only one wheel is a balancing act—that's why unicycles are used in the circus(马戏团).
There are also bikes with four wheels. Bikes with four wheels are called quadracycles. Again, the first part of the word refers to the number of wheels. In this case, quadra-means "four".

【分析】许多中国学生英语语法很好,但是他们的英语口语很差,他们不敢在课堂上讲话,也不敢和别人交谈。这篇短文主要介绍了他们英语口语有问题的几个主要原因。
16.根据第一段内容“Many Chinese students are good at English grammar, but their spoken English is so poor that they can’t speak in class or have a talk with others.”许多中国学生擅长英语语法,但他们的英语口语太差,以至于他们不能在课堂上讲话或与他人交谈。many Chinese students是主语,后接谓语动词,be good at擅长于……,所以第一空填are good at。分析“they can’t speak in class or have a talk with others...their spoken English is poor.”可知,空上填连词,因为英语口语太差,所以他们不能在课堂上讲话或与他人交谈。所以第二空填because。故填are good at;because。
17.根据“First, they fail to express themselves clearly because of a limited vocabulary.”可知词汇量大的情况下,他们将清楚地表达自己,if引导的条件状语从句遵循主将从现原则,主句用一般将来时,第一空填will express 。根据“Others will understand you with the help of your body language.”其他人会通过你的肢体语言来理解你。第二空前they是主语,由后面的“...by others with their body language even if they have a limited vocabulary.”,可知,他们用肢体语言可以被理解,这里构成被动语态,understand是动词,意为“理解”。will be done是一般将来时的被动语态。第二空填be understood。故填will express;be understood。
18.worry about意为“担忧”,后可接动名词形式作宾语。根据“Second, they are worried about making mistakes. Because they are shy and nervous, sometimes they may make mistakes easily. Yet we should know what we aim at is FLUENCE(流利) not ACCURACY(精确) when speaking.”可知,学生不必担忧犯错误,make mistakes意为“犯错误”。所以第一空填making mistakes。根据“So we should speak as quickly and well as we can”可知,重要的是他们应该尽可能说得又快又好。quickly和well副词,修饰动词speak。as quickly and well as sb. can等同于as quickly and well as possible。故填making mistakes;as quickly and well as。
19.根据“The third reason is that they don’t pay enough attention to listening to what others are saying.”可知,他们应该注意听别人的话。pay attention to关注,注意;should是情态动词,后接动词原形,所以第一空填pay attention to;to是介词,后接“ listening to others’ words”符合题意。根据“What you hear is necessary for you to start speaking.”可知,那你可以使用听到的东西去开始谈话。use是动词,后接宾语,what you hear可作宾语从句。故填pay attention to;what you hear。
20.根据“most Chinese students are passive(被动的) language learners. They just sit there waiting for speaking chances, and don’t actively look for chances to improve their spoken English. All they can get is to accept the fact that their English remains poor.”可知,很少的学生在课堂上学习语言是积极的,大多是被动的;他们应该寻找提升的几乎,而不是坐等机会。Few Chinese students是主语,后接谓语动词,be active to do积极做某事,时态是一般现在时,所以第一空填are active to;第二空,instead of是代替,相反,of之后可接动名词形式,符合题意。故填are active to;instead of。
