A little more than a year ago, Malia Martinez was introduced to a sewing (缝纫) machine, thanks to a thoughtful Christmas gift. “I got a gift certificate at Christmas to start sewing lessons,” Martinez said. “I really liked it.”
Later, a campground she often visited held a craft fair. Surrounded by pet owners and their beloved pets, Malia had an idea that would change lives. Why not create bandannas, a kind of colorful scarf, for dogs and cats and use them to support animal shelters
With great passion and the support of her grandmother, Martinez turned a corner of their home into a craft room. Her grandmother helped her when she needed to iron things like that. Together, Martinez and her grandmother made many lovely bandannas, ranging in different styles and sizes.
But Martinez’s goal went far beyond sewing lovely bandannas. She began donating her creations to shelters like Forever Paws in Fall River, hoping it would attract a potential family. ”When I went to see the dogs in the animal shelters, it was kind of sad. So I thought if we got them a bandanna, they would look cuter like ‘Oh this one is cute. Maybe I can adopt this one’ and they would get a home and have the food and shelter they need, said Martinez. “And I just thought it’d be fun to maybe have an impact on that.”
Besides donating bandannas, Martinez began selling them through word-of-mouth and at pop-up events. Ranging from $3 to $7, money from her sales is now donated to shelters too. A few weeks ago, she donated more than $ 200 to the Kingston Animal Shelter. “They were happy and really appreciative, which made me feel really good inside,” said Martinez. “It makes me happy to see how it’s impacted the people and dogs.”

A. Patient and easygoing. B. Brave and outgoing.

“Red tourism”, a new form of travel where people visit important historical sites and monuments (纪念碑). It has improved the development of the tourism industry in summer. And red tourism becomes more popular during the National Day Golden Week holiday.
Ticket bookings for red tourism sites in June increased by five times with local and short trips to red tourism sites being the choice of about 88 percent of such tourists. And the search for the term “red tourism” on Mafengwo, a Chinese travel service and social-networking platform (平台), increased by 300 percent during the summer holidays.

By rediscovering history and passing on the stories of the Chinese revolution (革命) and its heroes to the next generations, people can lift their spirits.
Red tourism can also be used as an opportunity to develop rural (农村的) areas because most of the red tourism sites are in the countryside. It can raise the incomes (收入) of local people. Since red tourism creates jobs and helps increase farmers’ incomes, it contributes to local economic development.
Data show that this year, there are about 2 billion tourists visiting red tourism sites, and its market size nearly reaches 1 trillion. Yet red tourism faces some developmental problems, mainly because some local government officials have failed to make the best use of red tourism resources for local development.
8. What can we know about red tourism
A. It is not popular with the young. B. It has brought life to tourism.
C. It is a traditional form of tourism. D. It is about visiting beautiful scenery.
9. Why does the author list the numbers in paragraph 2
A. To raise concern. B. To prove his idea.
C. To explain the story. D. To introduce a platform.
10. What is the advantage of red tourism for rural areas
A. Local people can make more money.
B. It can help improve farming equipment.
C. It can offer job opportunities to visitors.
D. Local people can receive much help from society.
11. What will be mentioned in the following paragraphs
A. More and more people will choose red tourism.
B. Many travel companies will benefit from red tourism.
C. Some measures should be taken to solve problems.
D. More red tourism sites should be open to the public.
Dolphins are much more intelligent than humans previously thought. Scientists have recently discovered that bottle-nosed dolphins can identify themselves in the mirror — much like you and I can!
When you see a zit (青春痘) on your face, what do you do Go to the mirror time and again, and wonder what it is still doing there. Well, this is exactly what two male bottle-nosed dolphins, Presley and Tab, do as well. So, these lovable aquatic animals (水栖动物) are not just sailors, friends, but they are also aware of their bodies — almost like humans!
A Reuters news agency report in The Telegraph newspaper reports says that Presley and Tab stay in a pool with reflective glass walls in the New York Aquarium. Researchers in the wildlife Conservation society’s Osborn Laboratories of Marine science noticed that when Presley and Tab saw their own reflections, they did not seem to think that they were looking at another dolphin.
Dolphins are very social creatures, and are friendly with humans as well as their own kind. This got the researchers thinking. Perhaps the dolphins identified their own images So they decided to find out. Using non-toxic (无毒的) ink, they made marks on different parts of the dolphins’ bodies, changing the place every week. Every time their bodies were marked, the dolphins made more trips to the mirror than usual. If the ink mark was on their tummy (肚子), they would expose their tummy to the mirror and look at it for a long time.
Now doesn’t that sound familiar Imagine the dolphins wondering — “Now where did that mark come from I wonder how long it’s going to stay ” Till now, only the great apes like the chimps, the gorillas and the orangutans have displayed this quality of identifying their images in the mirror. All other animals have failed this test.
The researchers feel that these findings may increase human understanding towards dolphins, which are being hunted and killed in great numbers. Dolphin fins are considered to be a very delicious dish in several south-East Asian countries.
12. What have scientists discovered about bottle-nosed dolphins
A. They can recognize their bodies in the mirror.
B. They tend to have human awareness.
C. They love to see the reflections of their bodies.
D. They build social networks with humans and their own kind.
13. How did the researchers carry out their experiment
A. They communicated more with the dolphins.
B. They made the dolphins trip more to the mirror.
C. They drew special symbols on the dolphins’ bodies.
D. They made the dolphins expose their tummy to the mirror.
14. Which statement can Not be inferred from the text
A. Dolphins are not being protected well.
B. Dolphins care much more about their images.
C. Dolphins get along well with humans.
D. Dolphins are as smart as the great apes like the chimps.
15. What’s the best title of the text
A. Dolphins: An Endangered species in Need of Attention
B Dolphins: social Beings with unique Communication skills
C. Dolphins: Aquatic Animals Fond of Their own self-reflection
D. Dolphins: smart Creatures Capable of self-recognition in Mirrors
