I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.
I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl(猫头鹰) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2-to 3-week-old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.
I examined the chick(雏鸟) and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree.
The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.
Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.
A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by the greatest sight of all — LUNCH! The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.
24. What is unavoidable in the author’s rescue work according to paragraph 1
A. Efforts made in vain.
B. Getting injured in his work.
C. Feeling uncertain about his future.
D. Creatures forced out of their homes.
25. Why was the author called to Muttontown
A. To rescue a woman.
B. To take care of a woman.
C. To look at a baby owl.
D. To cure a young owl.
26. What made the chick calm down
A. A new nest.
B. Some food.
C. A recording.
D. Its parents.
27. How would the author feel about the outcome of the event
A. It’s unexpected.
B. It’s beautiful.
C. It’s humorous.
D. It’s discouraging.

While you might not realize it, the environment where you sleep can make a great difference in the actual quality of sleep that you get every night. With a few simple lifestyle changes, you can create a healthy sleep environment that helps improve your sleep quality.
Go to bed and get up at the same time every day, even on weekends, holidays and days off. Studies show that people who do so are more rested than those who sleep irregularly (不规律地).
Go to sleep only when you start to feel sleepy. If you don’t fall asleep within about 15 minutes, get up and do something relaxing. Go back to bed when you are tired.
Pay attention to what you eat and drink. Don’t go to bed either hungry or stuffed. Your discomfort might keep you up. Avoid caffeine (咖啡因) 6 hours before you sleep. Having a cup of coffee within a few hours of bed time can keep you awake for hours when you are trying to sleep. Coffee isn’t the only product containing caffeine. Avoid chocolate and tea, too. Also limit how much you drink before bed to prevent trips to the toilet at night.
Many people turn on the TV before they go to bed. TV influences your natural sleep habits by making you stay up longer than you usually would, especially if you are watching something exciting. Instead of turning on the TV, read a book. Light reading before bed can help you fall into a deep sleep quickly.
If you suffer from serious sleep problems, go to your doctor. Your doctor will help treat the problems or may advise you to see a sleep specialist.
28. What should you do to make sure you have a good sleep at weekends according to the text
A. Get up a bit later than usual. B. Go to bed at a regular time.
C. Watch some relaxing TV programs. D. Avoid drinking coffee or tea in the day.
29. What does the author advise you to do if you can’t fall asleep after lying in bed for 15 minutes
A. To drink some water. B. To do some light reading.
C. To listen to light music. D. To get up and relax.
30. What does the underlined word “stuffed” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Having slept too much. B. Having eaten too much.
C. Feeling too sad. D. Feeling too tired.
31. What does the text mainly talk about
A. What to do before going to bed. B. The importance of sleeping well.
C. How to improve your sleep quality. D. The relationship between sleep and lifestyle.

Earthquake rescue robots have experienced their final tests in Beijing.Their designers say with these robots, rescuers will be able to buy more time to save lives during an earthquake.
This robot looking like a helicopter,is called the detector-bot.It’s about 4 meters long, and it took about 4 years to develop the model. Its main functions are to collect information from the air,and send goods of up to 30 kilos to people trapped by an earthquake.

As well as a detector (探测器) that finds victims and detects poisonous gas,a camera is placed in the 40 centimeters long robot, which can work in the dark.
Another use for the rescuers is the supply bot. With its 10-meter-long pipe, people who are trapped in the ruins, will be able to get supplies including oxygen and liquids.

Every morning, I will go to school with a lunch bag that contains a sandwich, fruit, and dessert.
Then, one day, much to my surprise, there was no dessert in my lunch! What could have happened to it Did Mom forget to make or buy it Oh, well, I thought, “It’s only one time, so it’s no big deal.” But, for the next few days, my lunch contained no dessert! So one day after school, as soon as I got home, I asked, “Mom, Why haven’t you been putting a dessert in my school lunches ” Mom answered, “Why, Eugene. I have been including a dessert in your lunch. If you’re not getting them, then who is ”
So then we thought of my activities, and what I did with my lunch each day. As soon as I arrived at school, I always put my lunch in the classroom closet (储物间) along with all of the other lunches. And that brought us to Carl — the bad boy of the third-grade classroom. The teacher didn’t like him in class and would send him to the closet, where he would spend most of each day.
Carl lived in a group foster home (集体寄养之家). He was loud and somewhat of a thief; he would take just about anything that wasn’t fastened down, so he wasn’t welcome at school. Mom and I concluded that with nothing else to do, Carl was probably going through the lunches and eating what he liked.
