Chinese people like the red colour a lot. Even now, Chinese people like to call ourselves Chizi, meaning the red descendant (子孙).
Red represents the motherland and authority (权威). Official uniforms of the Tang dynasty were red. In the Qing dynasty, red was used on official caps to show different rankings (等级). As we know, the Five-starred Red Flag was first raised on October 1st, 1949. Even nowadays, headlines of official documents (文件) are painted in red. This is why they are called red-head documents.
For ordinary people, red stands for happiness. For example, “double happiness” used for weddings is red. The bride (新娘) wears red clothes which are different from the white gowns of the West. During the Chinese Spring Festival, people will give red packets to the children to express good wishes. Couplets (对联) hanging on both sides of the doors are written in red. The word red equals beauty. The expression hongyan, meaning red colour, is a synonym (代名词) of a beautiful girl. Red is also one of the most popular words used in the names of Chinese women. But in traffic lights, red means stop driving.
This is how the Westerners like to use the red colour. It is because red is very bright, and is good for warning purposes. But it doesn’t really have any negative (负面的) meanings.

In February 2025, China introduced a nationwide policy to give high school students two full days off every weekend. This change aims to reduce the heavy study pressure that students have faced for years. Before the policy, many students in provinces like Hebei only had one day or even half a day to rest each week. Now, schools are required to cancel all weekend classes and exams, allowing students to relax or develop personal interests.
According to the new rules, teachers cannot give extra (额外的) homework during weekends, but schools must keep libraries and sports fields open for students who wish to study or exercise voluntarily (自愿地). In cities like Changsha and Hangzhou, some schools have even started organizing weekend activities such as science clubs, art workshops, and community service programs.
Most students welcome the policy. “I finally have time to play basketball and read novels,” said Li Ming, a 16-year-old student. “I feel less tired and more focused during weekdays.” Studies also show that students who get enough rest perform better in exams. For example, a high school in Zhejiang reported a 15% improvement in average test scores after carrying out the policy.
However, some parents still worry. “Weekends used to be important for reviewing lessons. I’m afraid my child will fall behind,” said a parent. Rural (农村的) areas face bigger challenges. In villages where educational resources are limited, students have fewer chances to take part in after-school activities. To solve this, the government has created free online learning platforms and encouraged urban (城市的) schools to share resources with rural ones.
Many teachers believe this policy marks a turning point in China’s education. It brings both benefits (好处) and challenges to students. They suggest that ______.

Many girls today love xiaoxianrou, or “little fresh meat”, which refers to young male stars who are delicate (精致的) and cute. Lin Bing just wants to be that man, so he has spent around 80,000 yuan on his face since his first plastic surgery (整形手术) four years ago. “Getting plastic surgeries is just as usual as body building. Both make men more handsome and confident,” says the 33-year-old young man.
Lin Bing is among a growing number of Chinese men using plastic surgeries to change their physical appearance (外貌) to increase their self-confidence. In 2024, the market for beauty medicine in China was worth more than 695 billion yuan. Surprisingly, around 25 percent of customers were males, while this was only 5 percent in 2020, according to a report by plastic surgery social networking app Gengmei.
There is a rising trend (潮流) of young men turning to plastic surgeries; most male customers are in their teens or 20s. “Some men just want to please themselves, while others hope to improve their possibility in the job market,” says Wang Jun, the president of Gengmei. “Men are under the same social stress as women and their confidence and competitiveness would be more or less weakened by facial and body weaknesses.”
However, Fan Jufeng, an expert from Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, does not encourage people, no matter men or women, to “blindly” go under the knife. Fan points out that people should think about the risks of plastic surgeries at first.
Fan also warned (警告) the public of the bad influences of live streaming celebrities (流量明星) who spread the misunderstanding—“Pretty goes above all else.” He advised that whether to have plastic surgeries should depend on personal needs. Fan says, “Think twice about it. After all, a rich and beautiful inner beauty is far more important than a pretty face.”

20.According to Wang Jun, why do more and more young men turn to plastic surgeries
21.What should people think about before going under the knife according to the experts

Today, if we talk about a color, we only need to use a simple name. For example, “blue” in Chinese is lan. But in ancient China, there were many beautiful names for blue, such as yuebai, qielan and shiqing.
Similar to the color wheel developed by Isaac Newton, ancient Chinese people created colors using the idea of pure (纯) colors and mixed colors. There were five pure colors, including qing (blue), chi (red), yellow, white and black. These basic colors can be put together to produce mixed colors. For example, mixing yellow and blue could make green. Lots of colors came into being thanks to this.
As for naming, ancient Chinese people paid much attention to the imagination that colors bring. For example, dongfang jibai is a light blue color. The blue color describes what the sky looks like early in the morning. Similarly, the pink color taoyao is used to describe blossoming (开花的) peach trees. The purple color mushanzi describes a sunset covering the mountain.
Meanwhile, a color was not just a color, but a symbol of social status (地位) in ancient China. For example, yellow was long seen as the symbol of power. Only the leader of the country and his family could use it. During the Tang Dynasty, officials needed to wear clothes with certain colors. Only officials of the top three grades were allowed to wear purple clothes, while those of the fourth and fifth wore red clothes, the sixth and seventh officials wore green clothes. Blue was for those in the two lowest grades.
The colors that the ancients left us can be seen in society today. Nowadays, some TV programs present traditional Chinese colors in clothes and buildings, which excite (引起) people’s interest in ancient colors.
28.How did people create the color green by using the pure colors
29.What does the color mushanzi describe
30.Who could wear the color purple in ancient China
31.Why do some TV programs present traditional Chinese colors in clothes and buildings

How many times have your parents told you that you must eat your green vegetables We all know that green vegetables are healthy, but what about other foods of different colors You don’t need to like all food, but it is good to have different colors in your diet, for example, red food such as strawberries and tomatoes, yellow food such as bananas and pears, and orange food such as carrots and oranges. But what about the blue food
A few years ago, a food company added the color blue to its bags of sweets. Children like the color blue, so were the blue sweets popular The food company was surprised to find that they were very unpopular. Children still liked the sweets that have the usual colors of red, green, brown, yellow and orange better.
How many blue meats or vegetables do you know None There are few natural blue foods—it isn’t a common natural food color. Some scientists say that as a result, our brain doesn’t treat blue food as something healthy. This is why we don’t usually use blue food coloring for drinks, cakes and other food.
Some people say we eat with our eyes. The idea is that we need to like the looks of the food before we try it. I wanted to test this idea and so I asked some friends to have a very unusual lunch. My husband and I made some eggs on toast and put blue coloring in them. The result is that nobody ate them. My guests refused to put the blue eggs in their mouths!
So will we ever see blue food on our plates The answer seems to be “no”, at least in countries like the UK and the USA.

In fact, China’s journey to the final was not easy. On August 18, they played a hard game against Australia. The point was close until the end, and China lost 89-90. Even though they lost by just one point, it was their best result in almost 10 years. Wang was named to the game’s All-Star Five.
Born in 2005 and standing 2.06 meters tall, Wang is the first national team player in nearly 20 years to come straight from a school basketball team. “He is not only a talented player, but very hard-working. In September 2019, he joined the NBA Global Elite Program and went to the NBA Academy in Australia for training. In Australia, he went from being a star player to sitting on the bench. It was really challenging. Luckily, when he felt lost and lonely, he got much encouragement and help from his teacher Liu Peng.
Wang often had a smile on his face, but after the final at the Asia Cup, he couldn’t stop his tears. “That one point is a regret (遗憾),” he said, “but I am still proud. We can compete with the best. Everyone knows that the color red means danger and that green means it’s Okay to move forward. But why did people choose those colors for traffic lights
Well, it’s important to know that before traffic lights for cars, there were traffic lights for trains. At first, people used red to mean stop, white to mean go, and green to mean warn. As you could imagine, trains met a few problems with white meaning go. For example, one train mistook a bright star for a white light and something unexpected happened. Because of that, people finally used green to mean go and used yellow to mean warn.
Red has always been a color that means danger. It is most probably because red has the longest wavelength (波长). So it can be seen farther than other colors.
But believe it or not, yellow was once used to mean stop. Back in the 1900s, some stop signs were yellow. That’s because it was hard to see a red sign at night. Finally, reflective materials (反射材料) were developed and red stop signs were born. Since yellow can be seen well at all times of the day, some traffic signs and most school buses continue to be printed yellow.
So next time you are impatiently waiting at traffic lights, don’t get so mad at them. They have certainly come a long way.

Asking for information politely is an important skill in daily life. Whether you are talking to strangers, writing emails, or making phone calls, being polite can help you get the information you need and leave a good impression. Here are some useful tips.
Always use polite words like “please,” “thank you,” and “excuse me.” These words show respect and make the other person feel valued. For example, instead of saying “Where is the post office ”, you can say, “Could you please tell me where the post office is ”
Use soft and friendly language. Avoid sounding too direct or demanding. Instead of saying “I want to know…”, try saying “I was wondering if you could help me with…” This sounds more polite and gives the other person a choice to help.
Be clear about what you need. Before asking, think carefully about the information you want. This helps the person understand your question better and give you a useful answer.
Remember to listen carefully. After you ask a question, give the person time to respond. Don’t interrupt when they are speaking. Show that you are interested by nodding or smiling.
Always thank the person after they help you. A simple “Thank you so much for your help!” can make them feel happy and willing to help you again in the future.
By following these tips, you can ask for information in a polite and effective way.
47.What polite words should you use when asking for information
48.How can you make your language sound softer and less direct
49.What should you think about before asking

What is it like to grow up
As you grow older, there will be certain events that will mark your growth. Graduating from high school and getting your first job are just a few of these. What are some other ways in which we mark our journey toward adulthood
In the US, getting your driver’s license (执照) at the age of 16 is seen as a major coming-of-age (成人) ritual (仪式). You may have seen kids celebrating their first car in movies and TV shows. It is the first true taste of independence for most teenagers. But not every teenager gets a car right away. Usually, their parents will buy a second-hand car for them as their first car.
Another big coming-of-age event is the prom (毕业舞会). Held at the end of the year the prom is a graduation celebration for senior high school students. Teenagers wear fancy clothing, ask each other to dance and vote (投票) for a prom “king” and “queen”. For many teenagers, prom is the biggest social event of the year. It’s a time for them to dress and act like an adult.
And there’s still more. At the age of 18, we can vote in the US and at 21, we can drink alcohol (酒). This is also the time when most children move out of their parents’ home for college or work.
It is around this age that society starts to consider us to be adults. But what does it really mean to be an adult
Psychologist Jeffrey Arnett surveyed young adults and found three common adulthood goals: taking responsibility for yourself, making independent decisions, and being financially (经济上) independent.
I agree with Arnett. Being an adult has more to do with one’s maturity (成熟). If you want to drive, vote, drink, leave home or even start a romantic relationship, you have to make sure that you’re ready to be responsible.
52.What can be seen as a major coming-of-age ritual in the US
53.What do parents usually buy for their kids as their first car
54.When is the prom held
55.At what age can one vote in the US
56.In your opinion, what’s the true meaning of growing up

Everyone is born with the ability to learn. But whether or not you can do this well depends on your learning habits. Research shows that successful learners have some good habits in common.
Creating an interest in what they learn
Studies show that if you are interested in something, your brain is more active and it is also easier for you to pay attention to it for a long time. Good learners often connect what they need to learn with something interesting. For example, if they need to learn English and they like music or sports, they can listen to English songs or watch sports programs in English. This way they will not get bored.
Practicing and learning from mistakes
Good learners think about what they are good at and what they need to practice more. Remember, “Use it or lose it!” Even if you learn something well, you will forget it unless you use it. “Practice makes perfect.” Good learners will keep practicing what they have learned, and they are not afraid of making mistakes. Alexander Graham Bell did not invent the telephone overnight. He succeeded by trying many times and learning from his mistakes.
Developing their study skills
It is not enough to just study hard. Good learners know the best ways they can study. For example, they may take notes by writing down key words. They also look for ways to go over what they have learned. They may do this by reading their notes every day or by explaining the information to another student.
Asking questions
Good learners often ask questions during or after class. They even ask each other and try to find out the answers. Knowledge comes from questioning.
Learning is a lifelong journey because every day brings something new. Everything that you learn becomes a part of you and changes you, so learn wisely and learn well.
57.According to the passage, what can make you become a successful learner
58.What do good learners often do
59.Why is it important to practice using what you’ve learned
60.According to the writer, how may good learners take notes

“We see colours everywhere; we use them a lot and sometimes our life may be changed because of them,” said Verity Allen. In a new programme “Colour Me Healthy”, Verity looks at the ways that colours can influence how hard we work and the choices we make. They can change our feelings and even influence how healthy we are.
“Have you ever noticed how people always use the same colours for the same things ” says Verity. “Our toothpaste (牙膏) is always white or blue. It’s seldom grey. Why not For some reason we think that blue and white are clean, while we usually think of grey products (产品) as being a bit dirty and unpleasant. It’s the same for business. We respect a company which writes its name in blue or black more than other colours. People who design new products can use these ideas to influence what we buy.”
There are also some other interesting facts about colours in our life. We use red, yellow and green as the traffic lights because they are most easily seen. The environmental protection colour is usually “green” because it lets us think of the green trees, grasses and mountains.

Fourteen-year-old Jimmy Cooper and the other boys on the local teenage football team may sometimes lose a game, but they won a fight against bullying (欺凌).
Danny Edwards, the team’s “water boy”, was being bullied at school. Danny has had a speech disorder (语言障碍) since his birth. When he grew up, kids made fun of him for the way he talked and the way he dressed. Each day, Danny went to school in a favourite suit, tie and hat. Danny didn’t think it was a big deal. “I… just feel… really… comfortable in it,” he said.
Jimmy was upset when he found out Danny was being bullied. “I thought to myself, no one should be picked on for the way he looks or speaks.” said Jimmy.
So Jimmy decided to wear the same suit and hat to school, too. “I did it to stand up for Danny and show him that bullying is not right. I wanted him to feel happy and safe and know that anywhere he goes he’ll be treated fairly by his friends,” Jimmy said. “I knew Danny would like it. I told my mum that I didn’t care what people thought about me in school because I was doing it for Danny.”
When Jimmy told the other boys on the team what he was planning, they wanted to be part of it, too. So they planned a “Danny Edwards Appreciation Day (感恩日).”
They decided that on a special day, instead of wearing football jerseys (球衣), they would dress like Danny. Word spread about the special day, and other kids in school decided to show their support, too. On the planned day, they all dressed in suits and ties and met in the school library where they cheered, stomped (踩) their feet, and chanted “Danny! Danny! Danny!”

When you are telling someone how to get to some places, you should know how to give good directions. In fact, giving directions is harder than just telling someone how to get to a certain place. Let’s learn how to guide others better.
First, tell the person about important landmarks (地标) instead of directing him from beginning to end. It will let the person know if he’s still on the way you advised him to take.
If you can’t describe the route (路线) clearly in words, draw a map. A map allows the person to imagine where he’s going. You can also include details (细节), such as the location of landmarks, on your map. Also, the map can give the person something to hold on to, so he won’t forget your directions.
Although it might be convenient to give someone directions to your favorite shortcut (近路), it could increase the chance of getting lost. Instead, give the simplest directions. When considering the simplest route, choose ones with fewer turns, even if the person takes a bit longer, or pick routes where the person can stay on one road for a long time. Also, don’t suggest routes you haven’t taken before.
Finally, don’t rush when giving directions. Take time to explain important details, such as possible dangers. If you don’t speak slowly or clearly, the person may miss important information. At the same time, don’t use words, expressions, or names that only locals know.
74.Is giving directions as easy as telling someone how to get to a certain place
75.Why is it a good way to tell the person about important landmarks when giving directions

As a fan of computer science, Zeng Guolai wanted to buy a classic book about computers. But his parents turned him down. “You won’t have time to read it,” they said.
However, this 16-year-old from the High School finally got it—by lying. As he said the book was required by his school, his parents agreed.
Many teenagers have had similar experiences to Zeng’s. They have lied to their parents for different reasons including getting things they want, staying away from criticism (批评), and winning their parents’ praise (表扬).
But there are some main reasons behind this situation, said Wang Bing, a famous teacher in mental health at Peking University. When students are becoming independent and want more freedom, parents just don’t let go.
“For teenagers, lying seems to be a good way to get freedom and students don’t want to have arguments with their parents, either,” Wang told the newspaper.
In fact, as children grow up, they have less communication with their parents which leads to less mutual (相互的) trust. This is also an important reason for lying, as Wang mentioned.
But unlike many parents who see telling lies as a signal of children becoming rebellious (叛逆的) or “bad”, Wang believed that this action should hardly be called a “moral (道德的) problem”. Rather (相反), it is a way for teenagers to step into the adults’ world—They have long been told to do things, but as they are growing up, they want to challenge social rules and see the results.
Parents should walk in their children’s shoes and guide their children to think positively (正面地), rather than (而不是) simply blame (责备) them when things go wrong. As for teenagers, ________.
78.Did Zeng Guolai get the book he wanted at last
79.Why did many teenagers lie to their parents just like Zeng
80.According to Wang Bing, what are the main reasons why teens lie to their parents

Scientists find that hard-working people can live longer than idle (不工作的) people. Career women are healthier than housewives. Evidence shows that the jobless are in poorer health than the job-holder. A report shows that whenever the unemployment rate (失业率) increases by 1%, the death rate increases by 2%. All this comes down to one point: Work is helpful to our health.
Why is work good for health It is because work keeps people busy, away from loneliness. Research shows that people feel not only unhappy but also worried when they have nothing to do. Instead, the happiest are those who are busy. Many high achievers who love their careers feel that they are happiest when they are working hard. Work serves as a bridge between man and reality. By work, people come into contact with each other. If people take part in some activities, they can find friendship and warmth. This is helpful to health. The loss of work sometimes means the loss of everything. It affects man in spirit and makes him easy to get ill.
Besides, work gives one a sense of fulfillment (充实感). Work makes one feel his value in society. When a writer finishes his writing or a doctor successfully operates on a patient or a teacher sees his students grow, they are happy beyond words.
From the above we can know that the more you work, the happier and healthier you will be. Let us work hard and study well and live a happy and healthy life.

Technology is everywhere and it influences our daily lives including the kinds of books. There are two main kinds of books—paper books and e-books for kids to choose from. The question becomes, is one better than another
The industry for selling e-books became a mainstream (主流) business in the late 1990s. E-books often have more colorful photos and sounds, and they may appear a lot more interesting than paper books. Research proves that e-books are good for kids. Kids learn more information when they are reading e-books because technology is fun and more enjoyable. Studies have shown that some kids may interact better when reading e-books. Some kids may have difficulties reading certain words. An e-book with lots of images and colors puts their imaginative spirit to the test. Good e-books help kids develop their reading skills faster. Highlighted text draws more attention, and the more time readers spend looking at words and hearing them out loud, the better chances (机会) they have to remember them. What’s more, e-books are lightweight and they can easily be read over and over again.
However, e-books come with several problems, too. Many parents and even experts believe that e-books are not good for the general health of kids. Kids need to read their e-books on devices (设备) such as their mobile phones, computers or e-readers. Since kids already spend too much time using their computers or mobile phones, parents worry that reading e-books makes their kids spend too much time in front of screens. Kids are more drawn by the technology and they care less about the stories. If kids are getting all their answers from e-books, their interaction with other people is greatly decreased (减少). Discussing word meanings and characters encourages interaction and learning with others.
86.What does technology influence
87.When did the industry for selling e-books become a mainstream business
88.What devices do kids need to read their e-books
