This week, we asked students at New Star High School about the best ways to learn more English. Many said they learnt by using English. Some students had more specific suggestions. Lillian Li, for example, said the best way to learn new words was by reading English magazines. She said that memorizing the words of pop songs also helped a little. When we asked about studying grammar, she said, “I never study grammar. It’s too boring.”
Wei Ming feels differently. He’s been learning English for six years and really loves it. He thinks studying grammar is a great way to learn a language. He also thinks that watching English movies isn’t a bad way because he can watch the actors say the words. Sometimes, however, he finds watching movies frustrating because the people speak too quickly.
Liu Chang said that joining the English club at school was the best way to improve her English. Students get lots of practice and they also have fun. She added that having conversations with friends was not helpful at all. “We get excited about something and then end up speaking in Chinese,” she said.

In the past, many students practiced English with their pen friends—they sent letters to people around the world. However, we now send emails to others and chat with people who live quite faraway on the Internet.
Here’s some advice on how to succeed in your online language exchanges (交流).
How to start a conversation when speaking English online When you speak to somebody online, start by asking “Yes or No” questions. Use questions such as “Do you like… ” or “Can you… ” or “Have you ever… ”
Remember your goal. You are trying to learn about the other person. Think about things you enjoy and share your own experiences to find that you have similar interests. If you only ask questions, you will sound like a policeman or a policewoman!
How to keep a conversation going Listen carefully. In that way, you can get to know somebody well. When you know him or her well, you will have more to talk about. Then ask follow-up questions. After you “listen”, use what you “hear” to learn more about that person. Use “open ended (开放性)” questions, such as “What do you think of… ” or “What was the most interesting experience… ”
Besides, remember some basic rules for online language exchanges:
Be patient. Do not try to find a good friend right away.
Be careful. Don’t give any personal information on the Internet, especially your address, telephone number, and even your real name. It’s very dangerous.
6.Who did many students practice English with in the past (no more than 3 words)
7.How can you find that you have similar interests (no more than 11 words)
8.Is giving personal information online safe according to the writer (no more than 3 words)

“I’ve always had a pretty clear idea of what I want to do,” says Mary, a middle school student who wants to become a director some day. You may not be as sure of your job as Mary. But you can start thinking about and planning for your future job. The following article helps middle school students plan for jobs.
Explore your interests
Many middle school students don’t yet know what they want to do. But in fact, students may change their minds several times, perhaps even after they enter society. And some of tomorrow’s jobs might not exist (存在) today. In middle school, it isn’t necessary to focus on just one job. 3. But learning about the kinds of jobs that you are interested in can help you succeed. Remember, you should prepare for new jobs that will need new skills to solve future problems.
Learn about yourself
Understanding what you enjoy and what you’re good at is the most important step in exploring jobs. If you don’t know what you want to do, you should ask yourself what you like to learn about. If you really like science, what do you enjoy about it—the lab work or the research It’s important to think about what you like to do, because work will finally be a big part of your life.
Discover possible jobs
Once you’ve thought about the subjects and activities you like best, the next step is to look for jobs that put those interests to use. If you love sports, for example, you might consider a job as a P. E. teacher or a soccer coach. 4. If you like English, it might be a good choice to be an English teacher or a tour guide.
Do your research
After you have discovered some possible jobs, the next step is to learn more about them. Talking directly to workers on the phone or by email can help you get information about these jobs. Also, meeting with them in person is helpful. First-hand information is necessary for you to find out if you’ll really like a job.A.根据短文内容简要回答问题。

You may have much homework to do every day. Homework is an important part of school. Your teachers can know how much you have learned in class through your homework, and it helps you remember what you have learned. Luckily, you can do a few things to make homework less work.
First, be sure to know your homework. Write it down in your notebook, and don’t be afraid of asking questions about your homework. It’s much easier to take a minute to ask the teacher in or after class than to try to remember later that night!
Second, use extra (额外的) time in school to do your homework. Many schools have study halls. Students can study and do homework there. It’s interesting to hang out (闲逛) with friends during the lunch break (休息). However, the more work you finish in school, the less you’ll have to do that night. It’s difficult to keep your attention for too long. So take a break while doing your homework.
Third, make a homework schedule (时间表). If you don’t finish your homework at school, think about how much you have left and what else is going on that day, and then make a plan about your time. Most high school students have between 1 and 3 hours of homework a night. If it’s a heavy homework day and it seems like you’ve got homework in every subject, you’ll need more time to finish it. Do you have exam stress (压力) Exam time is the most stressful time of the year. You have worked all school term in your classes and now it’s the time to prove (证明) what you have learned. Besides, it can help us to focus (聚焦) on the preparation of exams. However, if we can’t deal with stress well, we may make things worse.
When I was in school, I used to get very stressed over my exams. So did my friends. Some of them stopped eating and others ate too much! Some gave up and others burned themselves out! But the most important thing to remember when studying is not to feel frightened! Take the middle path (路线)—stay calm, eat healthy and get a rest. Pushing yourself too hard is just as dangerous as not studying enough. A tired, overworked brain is just as useless as a lazy, empty one!
So, what should you do Set a time each day for study and a time for relaxation. You may have less time to relax than usual, but you still need to let your brain rest for a few moments. Get plenty of sleep. If you are tired, information will not stick in your memory.

Do you often ask questions Children are known for wanting answers to many questions because curiosity (好奇心) is part of human nature. Books and TV shows often depend on curiosity. People keep reading or watching because they want to find out what happens.
As we all know, curiosity provides many advantages. Many of history’s greatest discoveries were made by curious people. People wondered how things worked and how work could be done more quickly. To improve your curiosity, get information from as many sources (来源) as possible when you learn about a topic. At the same time, read all kinds of books, watch or listen to speeches and ask questions. Don’t always get information in the same way. Instead, learn to understand the facts that different people know.
Don’t think you’ve already known everything. Instead, search for other possibilities and opinions. Remember, everyone knows something that you don’t know. Find out what it is, and ask about it. This lets you learn something and makes the other people happy by sharing their knowledge. Let’s try to become people who are full of curiosity.
