When I was a little boy, I always dreamed of becoming a doctor. My mother was an emergency room nurse, so I would often go to the hospital with her and watch her care for patients. When I was in high school and began taking biology, I realized how much I loved science and the idea of one day working with children.
One experience that stands out to me was volunteering at a children’s hospital during my undergraduate years. I had the opportunity to work with children who had cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. These children had been through so much at such a young age, yet they were so brave and strong. I knew then that I wanted to help children like them.
During my undergraduate years, I pursued my goal by majoring in biology and chemistry. These courses laid a solid groundwork in the sciences, which is necessary in the medical profession. In addition, I devoted time to shadowing pediatricians (儿科医生) and volunteering at clinics to gain a full understanding of the field. These experiences exposed me to the hands-on nature of pediatrics (儿科学) and the opportunity to assist families during challenging times.
As I advanced in my studies, I developed a growing interest in the research aspect of medicine. I participated in multiple research projects, such as a study on childhood asthma (哮喘) and its correlation with academic performance. This involvement gave me insight into the significance of research in advancing our understanding of pediatric illnesses and their treatments.
One of the aspects of pediatrics that I find most rewarding is the opportunity to build relationships with patients and their families. Children are not just patients; they are individuals with unique needs and personalities. As a pediatrician, I am responsible for understanding those needs and providing care tailored to each child.
4. What impressed the author most about the kids
A. Their optimism and patience. B. Their courage and toughness.
C. Their kindness and curiosity. D. Their sincerity and cuteness.
5. What is implied in the author’s undergraduate years
A. He studied rare illnesses in kids. B. He published an academic paper.
C. He combined learning and practice. D. He helped cure a child with asthma.
6. Why does the author find his job meaningful
A. He valued care between people. B. He could keep a youthful mind.
C. He could hear kids’ laughter. D. He longed to try new things.
7. Which words can best describe the author
A. Considerate and modest. B. Observant and upright.
C. Humorous and helpful. D. Determined and responsible.
C
Google Translate has improved significantly over the years. Initially, it relied on statistical machine translation (SMT), which analyzed many translated texts to predict the most likely translations. However, in recent years, Google has switched to neural (神经的) machine translation (NMT), which uses deep learning models to improve accuracy by understanding context rather than just individual words.
The system works by translating entire sentences instead of translating word by word. This produces more natural-sounding results, especially for European languages, which share similar structures. However, for more complex language pairs, particularly those with major grammatical differences, the accuracy is lower.
Several studies have been conducted to measure the accuracy of Google Translate, including research from the UCLA Medical Center. The results show that while the tool works well with commonly spoken languages, it has difficulty with complex sentence structures and less commonly translated texts. A study by Slator found that Google Translate’s accuracy largely depends on the specific language pairs. For example, translations between English and Spanish are often better than translations involving Asian or African languages, where grammatical structures and cultural differences are very different.
Moreover, research from Smartling indicates that Google Translate is most suitable for basic communication rather than professional or legal translations. While it can provide a general idea of a text’s meaning, it often falls short of delivering correct translations for specialized fields like medicine, law, or marketing.
Despite improvements, Google Translate is not free from errors. First, the tool sometimes translates phrases word-for-word, resulting in unnatural or incorrect meanings. Second, sentence structures may be incorrect, especially in non-European languages. Additionally, Google Translate has trouble with ambiguous (含糊的) words or cultural differences that require deeper understanding. AI translations often lose the meaning of phrases that are unique to a specific culture.
8. How does NMT differ from SMT
A. It takes advantage of big data. B. It focuses on structural changes.
C. It gives diverse translation results. D. It stresses relations between lines.
9. What can be inferred from Google Translate-related studies
A It works poorly for all non-European languages.
B. Some language pairs produce better results than others.
C. Its translations in legal fields are fully reliable.
D. Cultural differences have little effect on translation.
10. What does the underlined phrase “falls short of” mean in paragraph 4
A. Try one’s best. B. Make a quick decision.
C. Fail to meet the standard. D. Fall a very short distance.
11. What is an improvement direction for Google Translate
A. Fewer grammar mistakes. B. Unique user experiences.
C. Quicker responses. D. Offline translation.

Some universities in China and around the world are making changes to the ways in which they deliver liberal arts (文科) subjects, with some subjects being removed. These changes have caused a lot of discussion in China with some questioning the value of these subjects and others saying their removal is leading to a global reduction in the liberal arts.
Universities have the right and the responsibility to ensure their courses best equip their students to gain more opportunities in the job market. Education resources tend to be concentrated on science and engineering subjects that lead to better jobs, and this tendency is becoming increasingly clear, driven by market demand.
Liberal arts subjects aim to improve life and society. In this sense, the more developed a society is, the more liberal arts are needed. Human development requires liberal arts that keep up with the times. Today, what we need is the kind of humanities and social sciences that can adapt to modern society, which is advancing in science and technology. Liberal arts must welcome the Internet, big data, AI, cloud computing, and so on. The change of liberal arts subjects in universities is unavoidable.
In modern university education, the humanities are increasingly serving as general education. Future-centered humanities education should not, and cannot, promise a clear path from specialization to a specific career as natural sciences might. Instead, it should focus on offering a liberal arts education that equips future scientists, technicians, and professionals with humanistic qualities. This education doesn’t provide specific job skills, but aims to cultivate (培养) citizens with critical thinking, cross-cultural awareness, and the ability to construct meaning independently. Liberal arts should have the ability to provide effective “public products” for society. They are not material or technological products, but thoughts, discourses (话语), and theories.
12. Why are some liberal arts subjects removed
A. They are difficult to master. B. Their benefits show slowly.
C. They need more resources. D. Their views are imaginary.
13. How can liberal arts subjects keep up with times
A. By providing hands-on chances. B. By focusing on practical topics.
C. By using popular academic terms. D. By opening doors to technologies.
14. What do liberal arts aim to cultivate
A. Sense of cooperation. B. Self-reflection ability.
C. Global perspectives. D. Self-learning ability.
15. What is the suitable title for the text
A. Are humanities losing ground B. Humanities: basis for sciences
C. Will liberal arts make changes D. Liberal arts: searching for truth

“Wake up, Mama!” A little hand on my face roused me. My son, baby, and toddler (学步的儿童) were all awake. Ready or not, the day had begun!
I loved being home, but I felt the weight of the world on my shoulders. We’d bought a house, and unexpected expenses tightened our budget. I was weary of pinching pennies (省吃俭用). We weren’t foolish with money, we worked hard, and we did everything right. But we faced constant financial disappointment.
I dragged myself out of bed, pulling on my faded jeans and worn sneakers. My only task for the day was to pick up my kids’ photo portraits from the mall studio. Despite our small budget, it was important to me to have pictures of my children as they were growing up. Last week, I found a coupon (优惠券) and used some spare change from the car to buy a $7.99 portrait package, and today was the day I was to pick them up. Since we were going to the mall, I decided to make it an outing and packed some sandwiches for us to eat at the food court.
After we parked, I unfolded the double stroller. We wheeled into the portrait studio at the mall, and I approached the counter. A young woman smiled. “May I help you ”
“Yes, I’m here to pick up our photos.”
The woman asked my name and opened her large filing cabinet drawer. “Schmoyer...Schmoyer ... Ah, yes, here they are. Aren’t they just so adorable ” She fanned out the photos, and the smiling faces of my kids warmed my heart.
“Yes, they are great. Thank you,” I said.
She gathered the photos to place in an envelope for me. Then she spread out additional photos of my kids that I hadn’t ordered. I knew what that meant. She smiled sweetly and said, “Would you like to purchase these extra portraits They’re only fifteen dollars!”

【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. A

【答案】Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share with you the wonderful English Music Festival held in our school last week.
I joined a group singing performance — we sang Yesterday Once More, a classic English song. We practiced together every afternoon for a week, and when we finally stood on stage, the audience’s cheers made us super excited.
This festival was really meaningful. It not only let me enjoy great music but also helped me speak English more confidently. I even made two new friends who love English songs as much as I do. I wish you could have been there!
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】
My face hardened, and my heart turned cold. I bit my lip, staring at the extra photos — my kids’ grins were so bright, but $15 might as well have been a million dollars to us. “I’m sorry, I can’t,” I whispered, my voice tight. The woman’s smile faded a little, and I hurried to take the envelope with the ordered photos, grabbing the stroller handle to leave. My kids stared at the extra prints, confused, and I felt a pang of guilt. We sat at the food court, my sandwiches suddenly tasting like cardboard as I thought about the photos I couldn’t afford.
As I reached for my sandwich, I noticed someone approaching. It was the woman from the portrait studio, holding a small bag. “Excuse me,” she said softly, handing me the bag. Inside were the extra photos, plus a little note: “Every child’s smile deserves to be kept. Don’t worry about the cost — I took care of it.” I looked up, tears stinging my eyes, but she just waved and walked away. I hugged the photos to my chest, and my kids cheered when they saw them. For the first time in weeks, the weight on my shoulders felt lighter — small kindnesses, I realized, could turn a hard day bright.
