Someone asked in a loud voice, “What happened Did he fall ” Several people were speaking at the same time. “It’s his heart, you know.” “He has been in and out of hospital for years...” “…his head hit those glasses.”
The man was still lying across the table. Jennifer jumped up, and both she and Claire ran over to him.
“We’re nurses,” said Jennifer. “Can we help ”
There was a cut on the side of the man’s face. It was. deep and he was losing a lot of blood. A waiter ran up with a towel. Jennifer took it and held it to the cut. The man’s mouth was open and he was making strange noises.
“He needs a doctor. We’ll have to get him to hospital,” Jennifer said. She turned to Claire and asked, “You came here in your car, didn’t you ”
“Yes. Let’s take him to hospital,” Claire replied. They helped the man outside and put him in Claire’s car. Jennifer jumped in beside him and they drove off. She was still holding the towel to the man’s face. The blood was not coming so fast and he was beginning to feel a little better.
“Where... where are we going ” he asked. “Are you taking me home ”
“Just stay there and don’t speak,” Jennifer told him. “You fell and hurt yourself. You’ll be all right, but you must see a doctor. We’ll be at the hospital in a few minutes.”
As soon as he heard the word “hospital”, the man tried to sit up.
“No, no,” he said angrily, “I don’t need to go to hospital. I’m feeling better now. Just take me home. And who are you ”
“I’m a nurse,” Jennifer told him. “And you need to see a doctor. We’ re nearly there now. Just sit still and stop talking.”
But the man was feeling stronger and he would not be quiet. He pulled at Jennifer’s arm and said loudly, “I don’t need a doctor. It’s just a small cut on my face. I’m all right now. Take me home!” When Jennifer did not answer him, he said in a quieter voice, “Please listen to me. I’m feeling fine. There’s no need to take me to hospital. They’ll want to keep me there—they always do, because of my bad heart. I have to meet some business people the day after tomorrow. It’s very important to me. So just stop the car and I can take a taxi home.”
Soon, the car stopped at the door of the hospital. A nurse came to meet them. When Claire told her about the accident, Jennifer helped the man out of the car. He said something angrily to the nurse, but after a few seconds, he went with her into the hospital. Jennifer and Claire drove away.
“What a difficult man!” Claire said angrily. “No ‘Thank you for your help.’ or ‘You’re very kind.’”

Plants aren’t just nice to look at. They can also do good to your health, especially when they are indoors.
Having plants inside your home means you get lots of the advantages from being outside in nature. There are many different kinds of houseplants—tiny cacti, hanging plants with long leaves and plants that can grow more than a metre tall or wide. Your interest and knowledge of nature will develop when you research and learn about different plants and the conditions they need to grow.
Plants need water, light and attention. When you care for them, you should be careful and responsible. Nixon, who runs a flower shop called Green and Grounded, says looking after a plant can help you notice small details (细节). Being responsible for houseplants can give you a feeling of purpose. Plants can make you more creative. When you see the plant growing and flowering, you’ll feel a strong sense of achievement. You will also develop patience because many plants grow slowly and may take months or even years to flower or bear fruit.
Houseplants do more than just make your room beautiful. Houseplants help you feel quieter and less worried. Studies show that nature can make people feel relaxed. Houseplants are like little air cleaners to help you sleep better, especially if you have a plant such as lavender (薰衣草) in your room. You can grow plants to eat, such as salad leaves and tomatoes. Some plants can be used as medicine. Aloe Vera (芦荟) can deal with burns, while peppermint (薄荷) helps with headaches.

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is like a computer brain that can think and learn. Imagine a robot that can solve puzzles or a computer that can answer questions! AI helps us in many ways, like making video games more fun, helping doctors find ways to keep people healthy, and even making cars that can drive themselves. AI is making our future exciting by doing things we once thought only humans could do!
AI uses something called algorithms (算法). These are like a set of rules that tell the AI what to do. For example, an algorithm for a self-driving car might tell it to stop at a red light, drive around obstacles (障碍物), and follow traffic rules. AI also uses a lot of data. Data is like information, and AI learns from this information, just like humans learn from experiences. The more data AI has, the better it becomes at its tasks.
One of the newest things in AI is machine learning. This is when AI learns without being directly told what to do. It learns by finding patterns in the data. For example, if you show a machine learning AI many pictures of cats and dogs, it will learn to tell the difference between them on its own, without anyone telling it “this is a cat” or “that is a dog.” This makes AI very powerful and able to do new things quickly.
AI is already changing the world, and it will change it even more in the future. From helping us with daily tasks to solving big world problems, AI has a lot of potential. But it’s important to use AI wisely and make sure it benefits everyone.

C.By comparing AI with human intelligence and then giving advice.
D.By asking questions, providing answers, and making predictions.
Long long ago, the East Sea was wild and dangerous. Nvwa, the youngest daughter of Emperor Yan, loved playing on the beach. One sunny morning, she chased a butterfly near the water. Dark clouds suddenly covered the sky, and huge waves pulled her into the sea. Her father found only her red silk shoe on the sand.
Nvwa’s spirit became a small bird named Jingwei, with feathers (羽毛) as bright as fire. Every day, she flew between the mountains and the sea, carrying twig (树枝) and small stones in her mouth. “I will fill this sea!” she cried. The sea shouted, “Stop, little bird! You’ll never succeed!” But Jingwei answered, “Every stone counts. One day, you will disappear!”
Villagers watched her and shook their heads. “Why waste time on an impossible task ” asked an old fisherman. A young girl, however, shouted to her brother, “Look! She never gives up. Maybe we can learn from her.”
When summer came, the sun burned Jingwei’s wings, but she kept flying. When winter arrived, snow covered the mountains, making her feathers heavy but she still worked. One spring morning, a child shouted, “Look! There’s a tiny island in the sea!” Over the years, Jingwei’s stones had formed a small land. Though the sea remained vast (辽阔), people remembered her courage.

①How did you spend your last holiday Did you just stare (注视) at a screen from morning til night Well, you are not alone. A new survey shows that the average Chinese person spends over five and a half hours online every day. That’s a lot of time scrolling (滚屏) and watching videos! But is this really helping us relax, or is it just making our brains tired
②First, let’s think about how we spend our time online. Most of us watch short videos rather than learning something new. This kind of low-value material doesn’t help us relax—it actually makes our thinking less clear. The term “brain rot” perfectly describes what happens when we spend too much time on meaningless online things.
③Meanwhile, using the Internet is like eating your favorite snack: it’s hard to stop. Our phones and tablets are full of endless short videos and memes, making them like personal fun factories. It’s easy and comfortable to just sit and scroll for hours, but this “easy fun” comes at a cost. The more time we spend on screens, the less we enjoy real life. We’re missing out on beautiful sunsets, heartfelt thanks, and fun hobbies. When did our lives become so boring
④Also, we’re forgetting how to relax in a meaningful way. Free time shouldn’t just be about watching Douyin or Bilibili. Instead, it should be a chance to connect with the world. Nature doesn’t have Wi-Fi, but it has fresh air, sunlight, and birdsong. Spending time with friends in real life is much better than laughing alone at a meme on your screen.
⑤In short, life isn’t about how much time you have— it’s about how you use it. Screens are here to stay, but they shouldn’t take over our free time. The summer holiday is coming soon. Will you choose to do something more meaningful Remember, “brain rot” is real!
26.What does “brain rot” mean in the passage
A.Enjoying real-life activities. B.Learning something new online.
C.Feeling sad after watching videos. D.Thinking less clearly because of screen time.
27.Why does the author compare Internet to snacks
A.It’s not easy to control. B.It’s a waste of time. C.It’s bad for one’s health. D.It’s one way to have fun.
28.What does the author suggest for a meaningful holiday
A.Chat with friends online. B.Stay indoors and use Wi-Fi.
C.Watch more educational videos. D.Spend time in nature or with friends.
29.What’s the structure of the passage
A. B. C. D.
30.What is the best title for the passage
A.Advantages of Online Education. B.Smart Internet Usage Tips.
C.Short Videos’ Popularity in China. D.Balancing Screen Time and Real Life.

The Year of the Snake in the Chinese calendar brings special attention to these fascinating creatures. Snakes have a long history in Chinese culture, often seen in art, mythology, and traditional beliefs. From ancient bronze artifacts shaped like snakes to stories about snake spirits, they are deeply woven into the fabric of Chinese tradition.
In ancient China, snakes were sometimes connected with gods or magical powers. They were seen as symbols of protection, healing, or even creation. In some folk tales, snake spirits could change into human form and have adventures or relationships. These stories show the complex feelings people had about snakes—a mix of respect, fear, and wonder.
Snakes are also important in traditional Chinese medicine. Certain snake parts are believed to have healing properties. However, it’s important to remember that using wildlife in medicine can be harmful to animal populations and should be done responsibly, following scientific guidance.
Today, while some old beliefs remain, many people are learning more about snakes from a scientific point of view. They are important parts of ecosystems, helping control pests. Animals can express their needs in a lot of ways. Take cats as an example. Cats have amazing meowing skills. They are able to have conversations with humans by using meows and you’re able to understand them. If a pet cat is hungry, it will keep meowing repeatedly and hurriedly to get food. When a pet cat is looking for your love and care, it produces low and soft meows. Meowing starts as soon as a baby cat is brought to life and it uses meowing to get the mother’s attention to be fed.
▲They can use their noses to judge their environment and sense any signs of danger. They will look over places carefully before they choose a place to relax. Besides, cats are able to tell situations by looking for familiar smells. Your cat can smell your face and store the smell in its memory and use it to recognize you in the future.
We often see dogs go around and fetch things for their owners in daily life, such as balls, shoes and newspapers. But many cats find objects that they like outside and bring them to their owners.
