An elderly friend wrote me recently. She was worried about her failing health. But what troubled her most was that she was no longer able to volunteer and help her community the way she used to. At the end of the letter, she asked me, “What can I do to make this world better at my age ”
I wrote her back that every little thing she did could make this world better, and that even just a smile could change a life. I shared a story that I read. A young man had nearly given up on life. He had become so filled with sadness that he felt hopeless about life. When walking home, he stopped at a corner to wait for a car to pass. As the car drove slowly by, the woman behind the wheel looked directly at him and gave him a huge smile. That smile was so warm and so caring that it made him believe there was still some goodness left in the world, and he decided not to give up, but to live it fully again.
I told my friend that while we all try to do big things in this world, it is actually the little things we do each day that make a difference. A shared smile, a caring word or an act of kindness can all help to comfort a heart, uplift a soul (心灵) and change a life. In the end, it is these things that change the world and us. Every act of love, no matter how small, brings happiness to the world. And no one is ever too old to share them.
And when we love, we will have joy and we will help others. No act of kindness is too small. Even the smallest smile can change a life.
24.What troubled the author’s friend the most
A.She had no time to volunteer. B.She thought herself unable to help others.
C.She couldn’t get in touch with the community. D.She wasn’t able to live well because of illness.
25.Why did the author tell the story of the young man
A.To support his view. B.To praise the young man.
C.To share a funny experience. D.To ask his friend to help the man.
26.What made the young man live on
A.A free ride in a car. B.A stranger’s friendly act.
C.His dream of finding pleasure. D.His friend’s encouraging words.
27.Which saying best matches the author’s advice to his elderly friend
A.Many hands make light work. B.Actions speak louder than words.
C.A little kindness goes a long way. D.A friend in need is a friend indeed.
Scientists took a video of tiger sharks and oceanic whitetip sharks peacefully feeding together on a dead animal, which might have led to a possible fight. And now researchers are expecting to know why.
Sharks eating together is hardly seen, but scientists saw the sight (景象) off the coast of Hawaii’s Big Island. To our knowledge, this is the first study to record these two types of sharks feeding together.
The study in Frontiers in Fish Science says at least 12 sharks — two types, tiger sharks and oceanic whitetip sharks — fed in a quiet way. Usually, sharks like to be lonely hunters (猎食者). They prefer to feed alone. So the researchers were really excited by the fact that everyone seemed to be getting along really well at the feeding gathering.
Apart from the fact that these two types usually hunt and feed alone, they are very different. Oceanic whitetips, as their name suggests, are oceanic — meaning they live in open, deep waters far from coasts, rather than near shorelines. They seldom stay in one area but move around a lot across large parts of the ocean, while tiger sharks live in coastal areas all year round. But people saw that the sharks’ social ways let them share the meal peacefully. Before, the two were hardly together in space and time.
There was something like a “social order” — it mostly depends on how big the sharks are. The study shows sharks are not as dangerous or mean as movies often say. There were three people in the water recording this event on camera for over eight and a half hours. And at no point in time did any sharks act in an unfriendly way to any of the photographers.
Researchers hope this special event gives people a much-needed way to see sharks. It goes against the mean ideas about sharks that media often shows. At the same time, they want people to respect (尊重) the sharks’ space and not make them angry or upset them.
28.How do the researchers view the sight
A.Common. B.Dangerous. C.Welcoming. D.Surprising.
29.What can we know about the two types of sharks
A.They often look for food in groups. B.They usually live in different sea areas.
C.They can easily harm people coming to them. D.They like to move around a lot across the ocean.
30.What is the meaning of the study
A.It can change people’s opinions on sharks. B.It can teach people about sharks’ lifestyle.
C.It can warn people to stay away from big sharks. D.It can help scientists carry out further research on sharks.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Interesting: Sharks Aren’t Skillful Hunters
B.Sharks: Animals That People Know Little about
C.Amazing: Two Types of Sharks Enjoy Food Together
D.Frontiers in Fish Science: A Magazine on Ocean Animals
For as long as we have looked up at the sky, the moon has been there shining down on us. But it isn’t just a pretty sight, it’s a place full of secrets that go back billions of years. The soil (土壤) on the moon’s surface is about 4.5 billion years old, and scientists believe that if they study it, they can learn more about the moon, our sun and beyond.
Now, a sample (样品) of moon soil collected by China has traveled around 240,000 miles, finally making it to a lab in Milton Keynes. Think of gold — one of the most treasured metals in our life. And the worth of moon soil can match that of gold.
Think about its journey from the moon to China, and then to Milton Keynes. So this is the first time that China has shared any of their samples with the international community. It has recorded the history of the sun and other stars in space.
And it’s here that the secrets could be uncovered. China sent the moon soil to the UK because this lab can find out the gases found in the sample like no other.
“Clearly, there will be more excitement, because it’s a moon sample. I’ve worked with moon rocks, but I’ve never worked with rocks fresh from the surface of the moon before. The sample carries information about the moon’s early history that older rocks don’t have,” a British scientist said. Moon soil could be used for 3D printing to produce bricks (砖), which can help build research bases on the moon, while some scientists were already working on finding cheaper and more useful technologies to get gases like Helium-3, O2, and H2 from the soil, which could support further moon exploration.
“I hope that within a year, we will execute our goal — studying the sample. With the understanding of how it might have formed and the story it tells us about the moon, we can better study the moon, and even space,” a British scientist said.
The moon may be Earth’s nearest neighbor, but there are still many untold secrets and important scientific information to be discovered.
32.What’s the author’s purpose in mentioning gold
A.To prove gold is uncommon on the moon. B.To show moon soil can be turned into gold.
C.To help understand how valuable moon soil is. D.To describe the differences between it and moon soil.
33.Why has the sample of moon soil been sent to the UK
A.It has worked with China for long.
B.The top technology gives it a great advantage.
C.Other nations show no interest in studying moon soil.
D.Soil samples from the moon were studied there before.
34.What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about
A.The possible use of moon soil. B.Why 3D printing with moon soil is needed.
C.The work the British scientist will carry out. D.How the sample will be used to produce O2.
35.What does the underlined word “execute” in paragraph 6 mean
A.Mention. B.Check. C.Improve. D.Realize.
If you’re a student who has a part-time job, you may find balancing (平衡) school and work a bit stressful at times. 36 Here are some tips for balancing them.
Practice prioritizing (划分优先顺序).
Knowing how to prioritize your school and work is important. Go through all the tasks on your daily schedule to find out which ones must be completed immediately, and which ones can be saved for later. 37 But that’s totally okay! Focus on the most important tasks first — everything else can wait.
38
When you’re trying to balance school and work, it can seem difficult to take time for yourself, but it’s important to help manage your stress and avoid burning out. Try to always get a good night’s sleep and fresh air, and take downtime from work and school to relax. If you have a hobby that helps you de-stress, make time for that, too!
Create your support system.
Having a dependable network of support is also important. 39 Instead, you can reach out to your support system — friends, family, trusted educators, or co-workers-for advice and support during difficult times.
Know when to make changes.
Balancing a packed schedule can take time to adjust (适应) to. However, if you start to fall behind in school or are working too many hours at your job, talk to your boss and teachers immediately to look for ways to get back on track. If the responsibilities feel hard for you to take for a long period of time, it might be time to reconsider your schedule. 40 And that is the most important thing for a student.
A.Take care of yourself.
B.Turn to teachers for help.
C.After all, a well-planned job schedule matters more.
D.Remember that your schoolwork should always come first.
E.When problems come up, you don’t have to face them alone.
F.However, you can manage both by forming some good habits.
G.There will be days when you can’t finish everything on your list.

Mae Pratzel, a doctor from Manchester, experienced a bad day on Saturday. Without her realizing it, her ring had slipped (滑落) off her finger before she finished shopping at a supermarket and packing the things into her car. For Mae and her husband Alan, it was a big thing. The diamond at the center was the same stone Alan had given her nearly 50 years before, when they first met.
“It was one of the most terrible feelings,” Mae said. “We kept saying, ‘It’s just a ring,’ but it was more than that.”
While the Pratzels spent the night searching their home in despair (绝望), hope was quietly on the way.
On Sunday, in the busy parking lot of the same supermarket, 10-year-old Kal Blank, who lost much weight because of a serious illness, found something special on the ground. Kal had a habit of looking down — searching for treasures in unexpected places. Over the years, he’d collected bags of coins and crystals others paid no attention to. Sometimes, he could find something useful and then he would sell it to pay for his medicine.
This time, however, the “treasure” was no common find. Kal bent down and picked up what he thought was just another coin, only to realize it was heavy — far too heavy. He put it into his pocket, not knowing he was holding someone’s most valuable possession (财产).
Kal’s mother called the supermarket and made sure that someone had reported a missing ring that perfectly matched Kal’s find. While the supermarket was contacting the Pratzels, Kal was busy making the return special. He cleaned the ring and placed it inside a small box his mother had saved from a trip to Ireland, together with a handwritten note. With honesty only a child could have, Kal wrote, “At first, I kind of wanted to keep it because it was pretty. I hope you relax now that you have your ring back.”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

We stayed at a hotel near the beach. We got up late every morning and then had breakfast outdoors by the pool. When the weather was not too hot, we went sightseeing in the morning. In the afternoon, we would go swimming in the ocean, lie in the sun, or go water-skiing. After dinner, we usually went dancing or enjoyed ourselves in the nightclub. That week went by quickly. We were both very sorry when we had to leave.

67.例文
With the supermarket’s help, Kal and his mother finally met the Pratzels. As soon as the Pratzels opened the small box, the familiar diamond shone under the light, and Kal’s sincere note made Mae’s eyes teary. “This isn’t just a ring returned — it’s a piece of our love story saved by a kind boy,” Alan said, wiping away tears. They hugged the 10-year-old tightly, and Mae whispered that his honesty was more precious than any diamond. Kal just smiled shyly, saying he was glad to give the treasure back to its owner. At the same time, the Pratzels noticed Kal’s situation and decided to show their appreciation for his kindness.
Three days later, the Pratzels showed up at Kal’s door. Carrying a thick envelope, Mae, as a doctor, explained to Kal’s mother, “We know Kal’s gone through a lot, and we want to help him. We’ve contacted a specialist who treats his illness and in this envelope are the appointment letter and medical fees. ”Alan added, “His honesty saved our precious memory; let us help him get better.” Kal’s mother cried with gratitude, and Kal said thank you repeatedly. The small house was filled with warmth. No one knows a lost ring can turn into hope and a lifeline for Kal.
