Passage 1(2025
In the age of social media and the Internet,it’s hard to sell kids on books when they have constant overstimulation at their fingertips.Interacting with books is wildly different than interacting online, but I’m a firm believer in books being able to compete.
Despite the enormous appeal of the digital world,I have managed to raise kids who love books. This was no accident. 1 .I wanted them to find empathy(共鸣),education and beautiful escape in the pages of books. As keen readers,I know they are in the minority. 2 .That’s a shame, because reading opens doors to other people, other places and yourself. So,if you want to help your kids make space for literature,I have some strategies to share.
·Buy books about stuff they love
We want our kids to love what we love. 3 .Whatever your kid’s passion is,buy them books about it.Maybe they love rocks, snakes, hairstyles, mummies or drawing.Whatever they love, give them books about those things.
·Limit screen time
If you want your kids to read, you have to limit screen time.My children have screen time, but it’s regulated to leave room for other healthier things.
·Ask them about their books
4 .Get to know the plots and the characters.Ask your children fun and interesting questions about what they are reading.Let them amuse you with information, even if you don’t find it interesting.Sharing what they learned will make reading that much better.
· 5
Actions speak louder than words. In this case, let your children see you reading.Instead of reading online, subscribe to a magazine and let your kids see you reading it.Send the message that one is never too old to read.
A.Read in their presence
B.Develop a reading habit
C.I can’t stress this one enough
D.I was purposeful about raising readers
E.That’s normal,but it’s also mildly illogical
F.Encourage your kids to share the stories they read with you
G.Reading for enjoyment is trending down among children nowadays
Passage 2(2025
Emotions can shape us in different ways. 6 Taking responsibility for your emotions is how you stand out from the crowd.Let’s explore some powerful strategies to help you on this journey.
·Accept others as they are
7 Keeping that in mind, remember you cannot change others.Even if you try changing others, you will only be hurting yourself in the process. The best course of action would be to change yourself. This is how you will become more emotionally intelligent and happier.
·Try using “I” statements.
Hiding your emotions can harm relationships. When your feelings are hurt,it’s good to voice it straightforward. 8 The best way to do this is by using “I” statements. For example, say,“I feel heart-broken.” instead of “You made me feel heart-broken.” This allows you to communicate your feelings without blaming others.
· 9
Negative thoughts can cloud your judgment. However,in over 70% of cases,we let them take hold and this is completely wrong.Whenever the other person is behaving in an upsetting manner, ask yourself if you have done anything to make them feel like that.Self-reflection helps you respond thoughtfully rather than letting emotions take control.
·Mind your words and actions.
In emotional moments, especially during arguments,we often say or do things we later regret. When emotions run high, anger or impatience can take control of us.Instead of reacting without forethought, consider taking a moment to reflect before responding. 10
A.Question your actions.
B.Avoid those negative thoughts.
C.Tell others how you feel in a nonjudgmental way.
D.Just like you, everyone else is entitled to their own beliefs.
E.Express your needs clearly and encourage others to do so.
F.During this moment, calm your emotions and respond sensibly.
G.To better yourself,it’s essential to develop emotional intelligence.

The less you spend, the more you save.It sounds simple in theory, but in practice,it’s much more complicated.Spending is built into our daily habits, which sometimes can get us addicted to buying stuff. 11 It’s kind of like a crash diet, but in a good way!
12
Despite the name,a no-spend challenge doesn’t mean you sit on your hands and spend no money whatsoever. After all,you don’t want to fall behind on your bills, and there are some necessities you simply can’t do without. The basic premise(前提) of a no-spend challenge is to cut out non-essential spending for a certain amount of time.It could be for a week,a month or even an entire year.
What can you spend money on during a no-spend challenge
If you need to purchase something during your no-spend challenge,it should be something that’s necessary and you absolutely can’t do without. So groceries, yes.Candy bar in the checkout line,no.Also,no new iPhone, even if you’ve been dreaming about an upgrade. No new shoes, even if they’re on a huge sale. This is not the time to make excuses to buy stuff you don’t really need. 13 The goal of this challenge isn’t to make life harder on yourself by cutting out spending on essential expenses.
The financial benefits of a no-spend challenge.
14 You can use the extra money you normally would have spent to build up your emergency fund.Or you might want to put the money toward other financial goals, like saving for a new car or an upcoming vacation. While no-spend challenges are designed to be temporary, you can always extend your challenge. 15
A.Decide acceptable purchases.
B.What is a no-spend challenge
C.There should be no quick-fix approach.
D.When will you start your no-spend challenge
E.Why not treat it as more of a lifestyle change
F.Sometimes the best way is to go on a spending freeze.
G.A no-spend challenge can be a boost to your financial situation.
Passage 4(2025
Thanks to smartphones, all the entertainment and distraction they offer can be accessible anytime at your fingertips. But if one of your resolutions for 2025 is to disconnect more frequently from your digital device, encountering boredom may be an unexpected consequence.
16 .So,what can you do to alleviate boredom James Danckert,a psychology professor at the University of Waterloo, noted “We don’t really have any good data on interventions for boredom.” Instead,he offered three admittedly unscientific suggestions to manage it.
Create a list for yourself
Make a list of activities that you can turn to when you’re bored.“ 17 ,” Danckert said.“But then you should have a second or third or fourth,so that when that primary thing that usually works doesn’t work, you can turn to these other things on your list.”
Stop scrolling mindlessly
Despite technology bringing the world to our fingertips, society is experiencing higher levels of boredom. 18 .In fact, they can make it worse. If you’re just sort of mindlessly scrolling through your social media feeds,it’s going to make your boredom worse in the long run.
19
Boredom has a message for you,so pay attention.“I don’t think we should embrace boredom, but I also don’t think we should try to escape from it,” Danckert said.“ 20 .So we should just learn to listen to it and figure out what it tells us in that moment. We need to adapt it and respond to it in good ways.”
A.Don’t try to hide from boredom
B.Boredom is neither good nor bad
C.Boredom can be as disturbing as pain
D.Do something to get out of that bored state
E.For me,the primary one is playing the guitar
F.Such a list helps you know the tasks you need to finish
G.Our phones and social media are not solutions to our boredom
答案:
Passage 1
1.D 上文“Despite the enormous appeal of the digital world,I have managed to raise kids who love books. This was no accident.” D项“I was purposeful about raising readers”与上文衔接紧密,解释了不是偶然的原因,是自己有目的地培养孩子读书。
2.G 上文“As keen readers,I know they are in the minority.” G项“Reading for enjoyment is trending down among children nowadays”进一步阐述了当下孩子阅读的现状,与上文能很好地衔接。
3.E 上文“We want our kids to love what we love.”表达了家长的普遍想法,E项“That’s normal, but it’s also mildly illogical”对这种想法进行了评价,且引出下文“Whatever your kid’s passion is,buy them books about it.”
E选项“That’s normal,but...”
4.F 下文“Get to know the plots and the characters.Ask your children fun and interesting questions about what they are reading.” F项“Encourage your kids to share the stories they read with you”与下文内容相呼应,符合语境。
5.A 下文“Actions speak louder than words. In this case, let your children see you reading.” A项“Read in their presence”与下文内容一致,点明了该策略。

Passage 2
6.G 由上文“Emotions can shape us in different ways.”以及下文“Taking responsibility for your emotions is how you stand out from the crowd.” G项“To better yourself,it’s essential to develop emotional intelligence.”
7.D 由段落标题“Accept others as they are”以及下文“Keeping that in mind, remember you cannot change others.” D项“Just like you, everyone else is entitled to their own beliefs.”
8.C 由上文“When your feelings are hurt,it’s good to voice it straightforward.”以及下文“The best way to do this is by using ‘I’ statements.” C选项“Tell others how you feel in a nonjudgmental way.”
9.A 由下文“Negative thoughts can cloud your judgment. However,in over 70% of cases,we let them take hold and this is completely wrong.Whenever the other person is behaving in an upsetting manner, ask yourself if you have done anything to make them feel like that.Self-reflection helps you respond thoughtfully rather than letting emotions take control.” A 项“Question your actions.”符合语境,与下文“ask yourself if you have done anything to make them feel like that”以及“Self-reflection”相呼应,强调要对自己的行为进行审视和反思。
下文提到“negative thoughts”,可能直接选B(Avoid those negative thoughts)。但下文核心是“ask yourself if you have done anything...”
10.F 由上文“Instead of reacting without forethought, consider taking a moment to reflect before responding.” F项“During this moment, calm your emotions and respond sensibly.”

Passage 3
11.F 根据上文“The less you spend, the more you save.It sounds simple in theory, but in practice,it’s much more complicated.Spending is built into our daily habits, which sometimes can get us addicted to buying stuff.”以及下文“It’s kind of like a crash diet, but in a good way!”
12.B 根据本段内容“Despite the name,a no-spend challenge doesn’t mean you sit on your hands and spend no money whatsoever. After all,you don’t want to fall behind on your bills, and there are some necessities you simply can’t do without. The basic premise of a no-spend challenge is to cut out non-essential spending for a certain amount of time.It could be for a week,a month or even an entire year.”
13.A 根据上文“If you need to purchase something during your no-spend challenge,it should be something that’s necessary and you absolutely can’t do without. So groceries, yes.Candy bar in the checkout line,no.Also,no new iPhone, even if you’ve been dreaming about an upgrade. No new shoes, even if they’re on a huge sale. This is not the time to make excuses to buy stuff you don’t really need.”以及下文“The goal of this challenge isn’t to make life harder on yourself by cutting out spending on essential expenses.”
14.G 根据下文“You can use the extra money you normally would have spent to build up your emergency fund.”
15.E 根据上文“While no-spend challenges are designed to be temporary, you can always extend your challenge.”

If you need to purchase something during your no-spend challenge,it should be something that’s necessary and you absolutely can’t do without. If you need to purchase something during your no-spend challenge为if引导的条件状语从句;that’s necessary and you absolutely can’t do without为that引导的定语从句,修饰先行词something。
Passage 4
16.C 根据上文“But if one of your resolutions for 2025 is to disconnect more frequently from your digital device, encountering boredom may be an unexpected consequence.”以及下文“So,what can you do to alleviate boredom ”可知,选项承接上下文,说明无聊的程度。
17.E 根据上文“Make a list of activities that you can turn to when you’re bored.”
18.G 根据下文“In fact, they can make it worse. If you’re just sort of mindlessly scrolling through your social media feeds,it’s going to make your boredom worse in the long run.”

20.B 根据上文“I don’t think we should embrace boredom, but I also don’t think we should try to escape from it”可知,选项承接上文,总结无聊的性质。
