The three most important words you could ever hear when it comes to personal finance are “pay yourself first”.That’s the way ordinary people with ordinary incomes all over the world become millionaires:they pay themselves first.
Before we get into what it means to pay yourself first and where the money should go,I want to share some statistics. The average American is going to work over 90,000 hours in their lifetime, and unfortunately for most Americans, they’re going to have nothing to show for it financially.
According to GOBanking,66 percent of Americans can’t get their hands on $1,000 in case of an emergency.Seven out of 10 working men are living paycheck to paycheck,as are eight out of 10 working women. The average American has just six days of expenses set aside. We have to do something to fix this. What we should be doing is teaching our kids about money in middle school and high school, but until then,my hope is The Latte Factor will provide young people with a financial education.
So,what does it mean to pay yourself first It means you have to get financially selfish and set yourself up so that you’re the first person paid when you earn a paycheck.I recommend at a minimum that you save the first hour a day of your income and have it transferred(转账) of itself from your paycheck into a retirement account.
Whichever account you choose, the key is that the money gets transferred without you having to touch it.We’re not talking about budgeting or discipline here. We’re talking about no human intervention. In The Latte Factor,Henry shows Zoey how much money she could save if she earned 10 percent annual interest. We have other charts in the book that show what the savings would be with interest rates ranging from 2 percent to 12 percent. But the number that matters the most when it comes to saving and investing is your savings rate.In other words, how much are you saving

I receive online evaluations of my teaching every year.I am criticized or judged from my facial expressions to clothing choices. As a new professor I took the negative feedback personally.Every word was a blow to my spirit, leaving me hurt and questioning my worth.
However,as I gained experience teaching different classes,I started to notice patterns—not just in the feedback itself, but in my reactions to it.The same qualities that made me some students’ “best professor” were exactly what others found “annoying” or made my class “a waste of time”.The evaluations were as much about students’ diverse preferences and expectations as about me.I realized I may not be for everyone, but I can keep teaching in a way that is true to my values.
About 10 years ago,a handwritten card from a former student hammered that lesson home.To my shock, they admitted they had once hated my class, and even me.Yet in that same note, the student thanked me—for my sticking to my principles as a responsible teacher and refusing to let them fade into the background and for holding onto hope for them when they’d lost it themselves.
Reading those words,I understood that I don’t have to carry the weight of other people’s challenges or opinions. My focus should be on staying true to myself and being the best professor I can be—not on trying to change how others perceive me.By shifting my focus away from being liked,I can invest my energy into meaningful work.
In learning to take critical feedback less personally,I’ve also developed the ability to distinguish constructive input from attacks or irrelevant comments.I have also realized I don’t need to take all feedback equally seriously.Thoughtfully considering each comment is important, but so is identifying which ones support my growth and effectiveness as an educator and which do not.
Now in my 25th year as an academic,I am certain the true legacy(遗产) of an educator isn’t written in warming evaluations or universal approval. It’s left in the lives we touch, the minds we challenge, and the hearts we inspire.
8.What is reflected from the students’ evaluations

Building robots to play ping pong is a challenge. The problem requires a unique combination of technologies, including high-speed machine vision, fast and flexible motors, precise robotic arm control, and accurate,real-time prediction,as well as higher-level planning of game strategy.
“If you think of the control problems in robotics,we have on one end manipulation(操纵),which is slow and precise, such as picking up an object. On the other end,you have locomotion(运动),” one researcher explains.“Ping pong sits in between those. You’re still doing manipulation, during which you have to be precise in hitting the ball within 300 milliseconds.”
Most recently Omron and Google DeepMind created a lightweight,high-power robotic arm.The arm has four joints,or degrees of freedom, which are each controlled by an electrical motor. The team fixed the robotic arm to a table at one end of a standard ping-pong table and set up high-speed motion capture cameras around the table to track balls that are bounced at the robot. They also developed control algorithms(算法) that predict, based on the principles of math and physics, what speed and paddle(球拍) direction the arm should perform to hit an incoming ball with a particular type of swing:topspin, drive,or backspin.
After bouncing 150 balls at the arm, they found the robot’s hit rate was about the same for three types of swings:88.4 percent for topspin strikes,89.2 percent for backspin, and 87.5 percent for drives. They have since tuned the robot’s reaction time and found the arm hits balls faster than existing systems,at 20 meters per second.
In their paper, the team reports that the speed at which the paddle hits the ball,is on average 11 meters per second.Advanced human players return balls at speeds of between 21 to 25 meters second.
“Some of the goal of this project is to say we can reach the same level of athleticism that people have,” one researcher says.“And in terms of strike speed,we’re getting really, really close.”
12.Which aspect of a ping-pong robot is mentioned in paragraph 2
A.Its flexibility in movements.
B.Its advantage in sensing a ball.
C.Its various planning of game strategy.
D.Its high-speed precision in hitting a ball.

B.The specific physics principles.
C.Technical design of ping-pong robot.
D.The number of high-speed cameras.
14.What do the figures listed show
A.The robot’s strike speed is faster than good players.
B.The robot’s accuracy of returning the ball is above 80%.
C.Different types of swing are of the same difficulty level.
D.The shorter the robot’s reaction time, the slower the strike.
15.How does the researcher feel about the robot’s performance
A.Content.
B.Annoyed.
C.Unexpected.
D.Embarrassed.
Ⅱ.七选五
Every household has them—expired(过期的) medicine. 16 But did you know that these small actions can have a big impact on our environment
When medicines are washed away or buried in landfills, their active ingredients can enter soil and water, harming life in water and polluting our drinking water.Besides, improper disposal contributes to the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance(抗生素耐药性).It makes common infections harder to treat.
17 A simple guide to help you deal with them the right way—without harming the environment. You’ll be surprised how easy it is.
First, don’t wash them away.Washing away pills may seem like an easy fix,but this allows chemicals to enter water systems, further polluting larger water bodies. 18 Put the mixture in a sealed bag or container and throw it with household waste. This discourages misuse and keeps street cleaners safe.
Donate—but carefully. If the medicines are unopened, unexpired, and stored well, you could consider donating them to clinics, but always confirm if they accept such donations.
Experts believe that many countries need a structured drug take-back system. 19 But before there is one system in your country, awareness is key.Healthcare workers and citizens must be informed about the harm of improper medicine disposal.
When each of us makes the effort to dispose of medicines the right way,we contribute to a cleaner, healthier future. So the next time you open your medicine drawer and spot expired medicine, remember: 20
A.So,what can you do
B.It’s not just waste—it’s a responsibility.
C.The government and hospitals are to blame.
D.To solve this problem,we must raise our awareness.
E.Countries like the US and the UK have well-established systems.
F.Instead, mix medicines with something unpleasant like coffee grounds.
G.Most of us either wash these down the toilet or throw them in the bin.
