As a confused freshman, I walked into my first creative writing course by accident, thinking it was a literature class on how to read stories, not how to write them.
When the teacher introduced the course, I realized my mistake. The credits I earned from the course wouldn’t matter to my major (专业). By the end of the class, however, I decided that I had to be a part of the course. Perhaps, as a lifelong reader, I was eager to understand how stories worked their magic.
But taking the class would be impossible: I wasn’t even on the waitlist. That’s when the teacher asked for a volunteer to hand in the first workshop story. Silence filled the room. No one risked eye contact. Whoever volunteered would have to write a whole story in a week. Perhaps they, like me, had never written one before. Catching my chance, I raised my hand and asked, “If I go first, will you give me a spot in the class ” He said he would. So, instead of keeping my head down and avoiding eye contact, I did the opposite.
Years later, I’d completed a degree (学位) in creative writing and was working on a novel when a literary agent (经纪人) asked to read the first 50 pages of my draft. But I wasn’t comfortable showing her anything; the novel was far from done.
Throughout graduate school, I’d been advised many times not to contact agents until I have a complete draft. At the same time, I knew the beginning of my story was attractive and that the agent might not remember me after a year. So, once again, instead of keeping my head down and shying away from eye contact, I did the opposite. I sent her the first three chapters. A month later, she signed me because she likes those chapters alone. She has since seen me through the publication of three novels.
Determination, focus, sticking to goals — the qualities that I consider important in getting me into Stanford no doubt helped me become the novelist I am today. But if I’d focus only on the path ahead, I would have missed so many happy accidents, so many beautiful chances to look up, raise my hand, and say yes.
4. What made the author finally decide to take the course
A. The popularity of the course.
B. Her curiosity about story writing.

Feeling bad after a favorite show ends is common, and it even has an informal name: post-series depression (PSD). Rita Kottasz, a marketing professor at Kingston University, describes PSD as “a feeling of emptiness and upset when something you love finishes”. This experience can be found in TV shows, books, or video games, creating a desire for more.
The idea of PSD gained popularity on social media and fan blogs in the mid-2010s, especially during the Golden Age of TV. Kottasz prefers not to use the name PSD, instead calling it “consumer saudade”, a Portuguese word meaning nostalgic (怀旧的) longing. However, a journal editor told her to use PSD because its widely used outside of research.
Kottasz and her co-workers published a research dividing the types of PSD based on interviews with fans who felt sad after their favorite things mon emotions included frustration, disappointment, sadness, and emptiness. Some fans even felt that life was less complete or that they had lost “best friends”.
While PSD is often connected to TV shows, Kottasz is exploring its connection to other media, such as the sudden break of K-pop band BTS (防弹少年团) and novels like Harry Potter. Younger people are more influenced than older ones, partially because companies like Netflix are always giving viewers new movies and shows.
What might surprise many people is that binge-watching does not seem to cause PSD. Instead, long-term watching may be a factor. Kottasz thinks watching a show over several seasons or reading novels across many years strengthens a person’s relationship to the characters (人物). In her 2019 paper, she said a Harry Potter fan who started reading the series at age 9 and was "sadly left behind’ after the final book and film published years later.
But it isn’t quite as simple as saying the end of a show or novel controls our emotion. Brian Kong, a Chicago-based psychologist, is worried that PSD might not imply (暗示) a cause and effect relationship between low moods and a program’s end. Instead, he says that when viewers experiencing lasting bad feelings, watching TV might be acting as an anesthetic (麻醉剂) for a deeper mental problem, like how some people with anxiety drink alcohol. In other words, the low mood already existed, and watching the series only masked it.
8. Which of the following is a common response among fans experiencing PSD
A. A fresh sense of purpose for life. B. A deep satisfaction after the show.
C. A great sense of loss of best friends. D. A strong desire for a new hobby.
9. What does the underlined word “binge-watching” in Paragraph 5 mean
A. Reviewing every detail of a TV show day and night.
B. Watching many episodes (集) of a TV show at one time.
C. Following the episodes of a TV show for a long time.
D. Reading a book series while watching the TV adaptation (改編版).
10. What doe Brian Kong imply in the last paragraph
A. PSD covers up a deeper mental problem.
B. Viewers with bad feelings like drinking alcohol.
C. Watching TV is the main cause of low moods.
D. Watching TV series can make mental problems worse.
11. What might the following paragraphs focus on
A. The solutions to post-series depression.
B. The marketing (营销) strategies of TV shows.
C. The difference between PSD and nostalgia.
D. The influence of social media on fan emotions.
D
No business would welcome being compared to gambling (赌博). But that is what is happening to the makers of video games. For years parents have complained that their children are “addicted” to their video games and smartphones. Today, even more doctors are using the word. On January 1 this year, the name “gaming disorder” — where games are played uncontrollably-gained recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO), which means game addiction is formally considered as a psychological (心理学的) disease.
Are games really addictive Psychologists have different opinions. Those who don’t think so say that this is just another moral panic (道德恐慌). Similar warnings have been given about television, pop music, comic books, novels and even crossword puzzles, but it turns out that they are not as harmful as expected. However, supporters argue that game developers have reasons and ways to design their products to make them extremely attractive. For one thing, the way to business has changed: in the old days, games were bought once and for all. But these days, games are free and money is earned from selling in-game goods, which connects playtime directly to earnings. For another, game-makers do research on psychology and analyze data (分析数据), which helps them maximize (最大化) the playtime. Smartphones and modern video game machines use their Internet connections to send gameplay data back to developers. In this way products are always made attractive to encourage players’ spending. The biggest spenders are titled “whales”, a word from gambling.
The gaming industry should realize that, in the real world, it has a problem, and the problem is growing. Being put together with gambling in the public mind will not do the industry any good. Now that gaming addiction comes with a WHO recognition, parents will respond to it in a more anxious manner, no matter whether their kids play games uncontrollably, or not.
12. What do we know from Paragraph 1
A. Children prefer gambling to playing video games.
B. Gaming addiction is formally recognized as a disease.
C More doctors are against the use of the word “addicted”.
D Parents complain about their children’s addiction to gambling.
13. Why did the author mention television and pop music in Paragraph 2
A. To show how popular they are.
B. To prove they are not addictive.
C. To show the anxiety they have caused.
D To prove games might not be as harmful.
14. How did developers make games attractive
A. They sold their games at a high price.
B. They honored big spenders with a title.
C. They improved products based on received data.
D. They design new video games of different kind.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Games: A New Kind of Gambling
B. Addiction: A Psychological Disorder
C. Games: The Cause of Psychological Disorder
D. Addiction: A Warning (警告) to the Gaming Industry

【答案】
Dear worried friend,
I’m truly sorry to hear about your trouble with your best friend. It’s totally normal to feel confused and sad when a close friend stops talking to you — even small fights can hurt a lot, and you’re not alone in this.
Here are a few suggestions that might help. First, take a little time to calm down. When we’re upset, we might say things we don’t mean, so waiting a day or two can help both of you think more clearly. Second, try to talk to her gently, maybe in person or with a short note. Tell her how you feel — like you miss talking to her and want to understand why she’s upset. This shows you care and are willing to listen, which can soften her mood. Third, if she shares her feelings, don’t rush to explain yourself. Just listen carefully first; sometimes friends just need to feel heard before they can forgive.
I hope my suggestions will be helpful. Best wishes to you.
Yours,
Susan
