We sat at a riverside restaurant on the Willamette River, enjoying spaghetti and watching Christmas boats pass. “Isn’t this the best evening ever ” I said, grasping my husband’s hand. We seldom ate out, and the sight of the festive boats added a touch of magic.
Smiling and chatting, we stretched the dinner out to nearly two hours, ending it with shared chocolate cake. I almost danced to get my coat — a black wool one given to me by my daughter.
I reached for the only black coat on the rack (架子) and put it on. Wait, what It reached below my ankle, not my knee. And I guessed it to be a size 16, not my 8. Blinking back tears, I left my number with the hostess, sure the mix-up would soon be corrected. But no call came that night, nor the next day. Heartick, I hung the too big coat in the closet, still waiting.
Months later, another freezing night, my husband and I were getting ready to go to friends for dinner. I pulled the coat off its hanger, pursing my lips about my lost coat.
“Wow” Penny, an old friend, exclaimed as soon as we walked in. “Very classic,” said Missy, the hostess. I arched am eyebrow. “You’re kidding. It’s four sizes too big.” I nearly launched into the whole story, but their words stopped me. For the first time I looked at the coat more carefully and noticed the fine label. I frowned. Did I need an attitude adjustment What if I was positive instead of negative about my unplanned acquisition
Instead of complaining, I asked myself what I needed to do with this coat in order to enjoy it. I had it altered by a woman from church free of charge. The following week, the temperature dropped sharply. As I gathered this altered coat to step into the car, I recalled the coat my daughter gave me, but this one was nearly as warm — and, as Missy said, a classic. Now I wear it with pleasure.

At any given moment, millions of people suffer from undiagnosed (未确诊) health conditions—diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, or even early signs of neurological diseases—that could be detected earlier with better monitoring. In fact, the World Health Organization estimates that delayed diagnosis contributes to nearly 20% of preventable health complications (并发症). What if there was a way to continuously track key health markers without invasive blood tests or frequent doctor visits
Researchers have developed a groundbreaking smart contact lens (隐形眼镜) that can analyze tears to monitor health in real time. Inspired by the natural composition of tears, the lens uses ultra-thin sensors to detect changes in these substances. Their waves can indicate dehydration, high blood sugar, or even signs of stress.
The new technology is built on a flexible hydrogel (水凝胶) equipped with biological sensors that react to specific biomarkers. When these substances interact with the sensors, the lens sends out light signals that can be captured by a smartphone camera. An accompanying app then translates these signals into easy-to-understand health data, warning the wearer if any levels fall outside the normal range. The hydrogel material is comfortable for extended wear and minimizes wear-related stress, making it suitable for daily use. Additionally, the lens is designed to maintain clear vision while performing its monitoring functions, ensuring no damage to the wearer’s sight.
In tests, the lenses successfully detected abnormal sugar levels in diabetic patients within seconds. When the smartphone app processes the light signals, it provides instant feedback, allowing users to take immediate action if necessary.
“While further clinical testing is needed before this technology can be widely adopted, our work represents a major step forward in non-invasive health monitoring,” said Dr. Elena Vasquez from Stanford University. “Future versions could integrate additional features, such as drug delivery for conditions like glaucoma, which will be a key focus of our next research phase. We are also exploring partnerships with healthcare providers to make this technology accessible to underserved populations.”
28. What does the author stress in paragraph 1
A. The urgency for early detection of health issues.
B. The inefficiency of traditional diagnostic methods.
C. The growing burden of deadly diseases worldwide.
D. The high cost of monitoring people’s health condition.
29. Why is a hydrogel used in the smart contact lens
A. To change the contact lens’ color. B. To replace the smartphone camera.
C. To store real-time health data. D. To ensure comfort and clear vision.
30. What is Dr. Elena Vasquez’s suggestion about
A. The future plans of the research.
B. The limitations of future version.
C. The challenges of producing the lenses.
D. The practical applications of the technology.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Tears Uncover Your Health Secret. B. Contact Lens cure Diseases.
C. Smart Lens detect Diseases Early. D. Hydrogel Improves Eyesight.

Fishing is a way of life for people who live on the floating villages of Cambodia’s Tonle Sap Lake. These Southeast Asian depend on fish that move in and out of the lake.
The wet season runs from May to October. Rainwater rushes off the land in the Mekong River and then it flows into the Tonle Sap Lake. This raises water levels in much of the lake. Starting around one meter deep, it can quickly rise up to 10 meters deep. With all that water coming in, there are many numbers of fish. Once in the lake, many of these fish lay eggs. Later, when the dry season starts, plants will protect the fish babies from predators (捕食者). In the wet season, many of the water levels of the lake drop. Levels of oxygen(O2) in the water decrease, too. This sends many of the fish heading back up the river. It’s a cycle that repeats, year after year.
Millions of Cambodians depend on the wet season. They need the fish to eat. But their numbers in the Tonle Sap Lake have been falling rapidly. Compared to the number of fish in 2003, just 12 percent as many could be found in 2018.
Such changes are not just happening in Southeast Asia. Across the planet, freshwater fish are facing many threats to their existence. Dams(水坝)are a big problem. They reduce flooding, like the type that brings fish to the Tonle Sap Lake each year. As people keep fishing, the share of fish left there could reduce even more. Pollution harms freshwater ecosystems, too. People have also been changing the land in ways that damage the habitat in lakes and streams. With growing human populations, overfishing becomes more of a threat. And then there’s a growing number of invasive species (入侵物种): Many now influence ecosystems that once supported native fish. Lastly, global warming has been affecting both fish and their food.
Today, about one in four freshwater fish species are at risk of going extinct. Still, the situation isn’t certain to continue. People cause many of today’s threats to freshwater fish. So people can also act to address them.
32. What will happen to the Tonle Sap Lake during the wet season
A. Few fish will lay eggs in it.
B. Its water level remains unchanged.
C. The number of fish in it will increase.
D. The fish in it will head back up the Mekong River.
33. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. The reasons that lead to the drop of the fish population.
B. The impact that overfishing has on the environment.
C. The invasive species that have appeared recently.
D. The different problems that other countries face.
34. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of freshwater fish
A. Unclear. B. Hopeful. C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. The Seasonal Changes of the Tonle Sap Lake.
B. The Sufferings of Floating Villages of Cambodia.
C. Dams and Pollution Are Influencing Nature Now.
D. Freshwater Fish Are in Trouble All over the World.

Ignoring the discouraging words, the frog began to jump, trying to reach the top. He kept jumping, higher and higher, but the pit seemed too deep. The other frogs continued to shout, their voices filled with doubt. “Stop wasting your energy,” they called. “You’ll never make it.”
____43____ . He listened to the voices of the other frogs and started to believe that they were right. With a final weak jump, he fell deeper into the pit.

Alice was absolutely crazy about dancing. As long as she was free at home, she would turn on the TV, and follow the dance tutorials step by step. Over time, she had learned a great deal from those TV programs, mastering various dance moves that made her look like a professional dancer.
When the school put up a notice announcing the upcoming New Year’s Eve party, which included a dance performance section, a strong desire welled up in Alice’s chest. She imagined herself dancing to her favorite music on the bright stage, and receiving cheers from the audience. But the beautiful vision quickly faded when she thought about her family. The image of her sick father lying in bed, and her mother working day and night to earn money to support the family popped into her mind. She was quite sure her family couldn’t afford the expensive performing dress. With a heavy sigh, she made up her mind to give up the chance.
One afternoon, Alice found a quiet corner in the classroom to call her mom. She took out her old, worn-out phone, her fingers hovering over the dial button for a moment before pressing it. When her mom’s voice came through the phone, Alice’s eyes immediately became wet. “Mom, I... I won’t join the dance show at the New Year’s Eve party,” she said, trying her best to make her voice sound calm. “It’s not necessary. The dress needed for the performance is too costly…” She bit her lower lip to hold back the tears, not wanting her mom to worry.
Little did Alice know that her best friends, Anna and Estelle, had walked past the classroom and heard her words. They stopped in their tracks, looking at each other with heavy hearts. Anna’s eyes were filled with sympathy, and Estelle gently bit her lip, feeling sorry for Alice. They knew how much Alice loved dancing, and it pained them to hear her give up her dream like that.

【答案】17. B 18. C 19. B 20. A
【原文】These days, many parents are worried because their children spend too much time indoors doing things such as watching TV or playing computer games. A 2018 study in the United Kingdom revealed that children spend about four hours outside per week, roughly 50% less than their parents had as kids.
Spending time outdoors isn’t just enjoyable, it’s also necessary. Many researchers agree that kids who play outside are happier, better at paying attention and less anxious than kids who spend more time indoors. Spending time in nature can build their confidence.
There’s a lot less structure than most types of indoor play, and they can choose how they interact with the nature around them. This gives them practice, managing their own actions and encourages creativity and imagination. Being outdoors can also teach them responsibility.
For example, if they are in charge of watering a plant, they can learn that they must take care of living things to keep them alive. Being outside gets kids moving too. Regardless of what they’re doing, there’s usually more exercise involved than if they were sitting on the couch.
Not only is exercise good for kids’ bodies, it seems to make them more focused.

【答案】Dear Jason,
I’m Li Hua, a big fan of your magazine, writing to share my view on the new column. Actually, my choice is definitely “Youth Voices”.
As students, we often have thoughts to express from campus life details like canteen improvements to big topics like environmental protection. This column can serve as a platform for us to voice ideas freely, not just read others’ words. Unlike “AI World” which may feel distant to some, “Youth Voices” connects directly with our daily lives, making the magazine more relatable and lively.
I believe it will draw more classmates to read and even contribute. Thanks for letting us participate in this decision!
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】例文
Paragraph 1
Anna and Estelle decided to do something to help. They walked away from the classroom, brainstorming ways to make Alice’s dream come true. “We can use the pocket money we’ve saved,” Estelle said. Anna nodded vigorously, “And we can learn the dance with her, so that she won’t be alone on the stage.” After school, they secretly registered a dance performance and headed to the dance supply store. They carefully picked out a light blue dress — they thought it would match Alice perfectly and bought two identical dresses for themselves.
Paragraph 2
The next day, Alice was surprised when Anna and Estelle came to her with a big bag. “What’s this ” she asked, eyeing the bags curiously. Anna smiled and pulled out the blue dress. “For you,” she said softly. Alice’s eyes widened in surprise. “But... I can’t accept this,” she stammered, tears starting to form. “We’re performing together,” Estelle said, grinning. “Thank you,” Alice hugged her friends tightly. From that day on, they practiced every afternoon, their laughter filling the gym. When the New Year’s Eve party arrived, they danced beautifully on stage, their dresses shining under the lights.
