Back in the day when I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life, I was studying to become a firefighter. As a firefighter, you’re constantly thinking of other people and trying to help children. It’s the mindset, that is the most difficult part in this job!
One night I was heading home and decided to stop off at a burrito (玉米饼) place. I was approached by a homeless man. He was very dirty and obviously hungry. He asked me for some change to buy a little food. As I was pulling some change out, I had an idea.
I decided to see if he wanted to eat a real dinner, so I asked him to follow me back into the burrito joint to order. When he followed me in, the people behind the count er refused to let him in. After some arguing, so I had to encourage him to order whatever and however much he wanted. He ended up ordering enough to fill his stomach at least 3 times over!
For someone who has been on the edges of society it seemed like he was very surprised at my kind behavior. But to me, it was what any “human being” should do or at least offer. I know we see these people every day asking for money but you had to be there to see the look in his face. To me it reminded me when I was young and my mom brought out a big birthday cake for me on my birthday, with all the candy, getting to experience a big meal. And I think he felt special, like he was getting attention. Again something that I could see he hadn’t experienced in a long time.
I often think about this story, because to me it’s not just about helping someone out by feeding them, but giving him the respect of being a human being and allowing him to feel good about himself was very rewarding.
4. What’s the hardest part of being a firefighter according to the author
A. Learning to be a good firefighter.
B. Deciding what to do in the future.
C. Dealing with the brother’s relationship.
D. Developing the mindset of helping others.
5. What do we know about the homeless man
A. He was grateful for the author’s kindness.
B. He ordered whatever he wanted the moment he was in.
C. He asked the author to buy a burrito to fill his stomach.
D. He was not welcomed by those running the burrito joint at first.
6. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning the birthday cake
A. To think back to his own birthday at a young age.
B. To explain the reason for the values he holds onto.
C. To show the similar experience of the homeless man.
D. To tell the difference between him and the homeless man.
7. Which of the following words can best describe the writer
A. Caring and humorous.
B. Selfless and determined.
C. Kind-hearted and thoughtful.
D. Considerate and Hard-working.

Livestreaming (直播) through channels such as Amazon Live and QVC is an increasingly popular way to sell goods online. It usually lasts between 5 and 10 minutes, and someone promotes a product. Viewers can then readily buy it by clicking on a link.
We analyzed (分析) 99,451 sales cases on a livestream selling platform and matched them with actual sales cases. In terms of time, that is equal to over 2 million 30-second television advertisements.
To determine the emotional (情绪的) expression of the salesperson, we used two deep learning models: a face model and an emotion model. The face model discovers the presence or absence of a face in a frame of a video stream. The emotion model then determines the probability that a face is exhibiting any of the six basic human emotions: happiness, sadness, surprise, anger, fear or disgust. For example, smiling signals a high probability of happiness, while an off-putting expression usually points toward anger.
We wanted to see the effect of emotions expressed at different times in the sales cases so we counted probabilities for each emotion for all 62 million frames in our database. We then combined these probabilities with other possible aspects that might drive sales — such as price and product characteristics — to judge the effect of emotion.
We found that, perhaps unsurprisingly, when salespeople show more negative emotions — such as anger and disgust — the volume of sales went down. But we also found that a similar thing happened when the salespeople show high levels of positive emotions, such as happiness or surprise.
A likely explanation, based on our research, is that smiling can be disgusting because it lacks true feelings and can reduce trust in the seller. A seller’s happiness may be taken as a sign that the seller is gaining interests at the customer’s expense.
8. What can we know about the livestreaming to sell goods online
A. It challenges the physical economy. B. It helps big company sell all goods.
C It is very convenient for the buyers. D. It helps the sellers develop fixed expressions.
9. What does the underlined word “off-putting” mean in paragraph 3
A. Unhappy. B. Awkward. C. Surprised. D. Frightened.
10. How do customers feel about the seller’s smiling
A. They feel thankful. B. They feel delighted. C. They feel cheated. D. They feel so tired.
11. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. Livestreamers Sell Products Successfully B. Smiling Can Increase the Sales in Reality
C. Emotions and Faces: What’s the Difference D. Expressions Affect Selling Products Online
D
Almost all calligraphy(书法) lovers agree that writing characters with a brush and ink on straw paper offers a way to communicate with not only history and culture, but also oneself. But now Chinese character handwriting is under threat from computers and mobile phones.
A college graduate looking for a job was reportedly turned down by a company because he wrote 24 characters incorrectly in a 400 character handwritten resume. A survey by HorizonKey, covering people from 12 major cities in China, found that nearly one third of those interviewed often experience “character amnesia(遗忘)”, with 94 percent saying this is a problem for them.
The main reason is that most Chinese rely too much on the pinyin based Chinese language input method, which is replacing the tradition of writing characters stroke(笔画) by stroke. The software will conveniently choose the right characters according to the context or word frequency, as there are dozens of characters with the same pronunciation in Chinese.
Education is another problem. In college, most homework and papers are printed out, instead of handwritten. And few teachers use chalk and blackboards, with Microsoft's PowerPoint the most often used software to teach knowledge to students.
The number of electronic devices in the classroom is thought to be another reason why students are easily satisfied with just a poor knowledge of the Chinese language and characters. It is quicker to look up a character in an electronic dictionary, but traditional printed dictionaries offer more detailed information on the usage and meaning of the characters. Students pay more attention to remembering a character's pronunciation, but not the other knowledge related to it, which e dictionaries rarely provide.
Another worry is the “pollution” of Chinese characters by Internet language. Young people regard using Internet language as cool and fashionable. After they learn to use these expressions, they automatically include them in their writing.
12. With the example of a college graduate, the author shows ________.
A. that practicing can improve writing
B. why certain people are poor writers
C. that there are differences in students' writing
D why Chinese character handwriting is in great danger
13. By saying “...those interviewed often experience ‘character amnesia(遗忘)’”, the writer means those interviewed ________.
A. are not good at handwriting
B. can't write characters accurately
C. show no interest in handwriting
D. find jobs much more difficultly
14. What phenomenon is described in Paragraph 5
A. Dependence on electronic devices.
B. Advantages of electronic dictionaries.
C. Mastery of knowledge of the characters.
D. Disadvantages of published dictionaries.
15. What's the writer's attitude towards the Internet language
A. Favorable. B. Uncaring.
C. Disapproving. D. Friendly.

11. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. Livestreamers Sell Products Successfully B. Smiling Can Increase the Sales in Reality

D. Friendly.

Nice to have received your last letter. I quite sympathize with you and understand the great trouble you are suffering from. I suggest you talk about your trouble with your teachers and classmates so as to get help from them. You are not supposed to think about your exams all the time, which only makes you more stressed out. Instead, you should think about the progress you have made in your study, which will surely increase your own confidence. In addition, I advice you to do more exercise in your spare time to relieve your stress, because sports will also help you sleep better at night.

【答案】 With anxiety (焦虑) in mind, I walked into the second math class.. To my surprise, the teacher remembered my name and greeted me warmly. This small gesture made me feel more at ease. As the class progressed, I found myself understanding the concepts better and even managed to answer a question correctly. My confidence grew, and I started to believe that I could handle the challenges of senior high school. After class, a classmate approached me and complimented my answer, which led to a friendly conversation. It felt good to connect with someone, and I realized that making friends might not be as difficult as I had feared.
I walked into the science lab and noticed that the same person from yesterday was sitting next to me again. This time, instead of feeling annoyed, I decided to take a different approach. I greeted him with a smile and introduced myself. He seemed surprised but responded positively. We agreed to focus on the experiment first and chat later. This small change in attitude made the class more enjoyable, and we even managed to complete the experiment successfully. By the end of the day, I felt a sense of accomplishment and looked forward to the new experiences that awaited me at senior high school.
