It being a hot afternoon, my best friend Stephanie and I decided to have an adventure in her basement (地下室). As I opened the basement door, before us lay the biggest room full of amazing things. I ran downstairs, and found paint in bright colors like purple, orange, blue and green. We gathered all the brushes we could find and moved all of our materials (材料) to my yard. There on the road in front of my house, we painted big stripes (条纹) of colors. Stripe by stripe, our colors turned into a beautiful rainbow!
The sun was starting to sink. I saw a car in the distance and jumped up as I recognized the car. It was my mother. I couldn’t wait to show her my masterpiece. The car pulled slowly into the driveway and from the look on my mother’s face, I could tell that I was in deep trouble.
My mother shut the car door and walked towards me. Her eyes glaring (瞪), she shouted, “What in the world were you thinking I understood when you made castles out of leaves, and climbed the neighbors’ trees, but this, come inside right now!” I stood there glaring back at her for a minute, angry because she had insulted (侮辱) my art.
“Now go clean it up!” Tears ran down my cheeks as I saw my beautiful rainbow turn into black cement.
Though years have passed, I still wonder where my rainbow has gone. I wonder if, maybe when I get older, I can find my rainbow and never have to brush it away. I guess we all need some sort of rainbow to brighten our lives from time to time and to keep our hopes and dreams colorful.

One person’s rubbish is another person’s literary treasure. In Ankara, Turkey, a group of rubbish collectors couldn’t help but notice a pattern — they kept finding books in the rubbish that they picked up around the city. Sad to see resources (资源) that could easily benefit others being thrown away, they came up with an idea. The workers created a library with the books they rescued from being sent to a landfill.
The rubbish collectors began organizing the books in an underground brick factory. The place, which had long been deserted, was part of government buildings. Thanks to its aged brick front and long hallways, the space turned out to be perfect for a library.
Once they sorted the books by type, the workers visited the library before and after their shifts (换班). Then, they began lending out books to their friends and families. As the library became more popular, the rubbish collectors finally opened things up to the public in 2017, and books began to be donated instead of being thrown out.
With a collection of over 6,000 books, the library features (以……为特征) Turkish literature and story books. It also has a popular kid’s section with comic books and an entire section for scientific research. Ankara has books for people who speak another language, like English and French. Lately, they added a place to relax for readers and chess boards for visitors.
The effort has reached beyond Ankara. Not only do the rubbish collectors take pride in the library— something many didn’t have the chance to use when they were young— but village school teachers from all over Turkey are asking for books from this project.
8. What did the rubbish collectors first notice about the books they found in the rubbish
A. They were rare first editions.
B. They were all damaged beyond repair.
C. They were mostly educational textbooks.
D. They could be a valuable resource for others.
9. Where was the library set up
A. In a small village.
B. In a deserted school.
C. In an underground brick factory.
D. In the rubbish collectors’ homes.
10. How do the rubbish collectors feel about their library project
A. Expectant. B. Proud.
C. Embarrassed. D. Worried.
11. What would be the best title for the text
A. Rubbish Collectors’ Dream: A Free Library
B. From Rubbish to Treasure: A Library’s Birth
C. The Power of Recycling in Ankara
D. A Unique Library in Turkey

ChatGPT, a smart AI chat-bot tool, has swept the education world in the past months. According to a US survey of more than 1,000 students, over 89 percent of them have used ChatGPT to help with a homework task.
Developed by US company OpenAI, ChatGPT is a powerful tool. You can ask it to write stories and emails, create a food menu (食谱), translate languages, and answer all kinds of questions.
Some schools in the US. Australia and France have banned (禁止) the use of ChatGPT. In the US, for example, New York City public schools banned students and teachers from using ChatGPT on the district’s networks and devices (设备), CNN reported.
The move comes out of worries that the tool could make it easier for students to cheat (作弊) on study. Some also worry that ChatGPT could be used to spread wrong information.
“It does not build critical-thinking (批判性思维) and problem-solving skills, which are necessary for academic (学术的) and lifelong success,” said Jenna Lyle, the deputy press secretary of the New York City Department of Education.
Apart from bans, teachers are making changes to their classes to stop the use of ChatGPT. Some college teachers in the US try to include more speaking exams and handwritten papers instead of typed ones, The New York Times reported.
However, not all educators say “no”to ChatGPT. Some Canadian universities are drafting (起草) policies (政策) on its use, for both students and teachers. They have no plans to completely ban the tool so far.
Bhaskar Vira, headmaster for education at the University of Cambridge in the UK, said that bans on AI software like ChatGPT are not wise. “We have to know that AI is a tool people will use,” he told Varsity, the school newspaper of the university. What we need to do is “adapt (调整) our learning, teaching and examinations”. That way, we can “have integrity (诚信) while recognizing the use of the tool”.
12. Some schools in the US banned the use of ChatGPT because____________.
A. it probably takes the place of teachers
B. students may use it to cheat on homework
C. it rarely provides the correct information
D. it takes up most of the district’s networks
13. Jenna Lyle thinks that___________.
A. ChatGPT is necessary for academic and lifelong success
B. using ChatGPT is not good for developing students’ minds
C. ChatGPT is so far the smartest AI chat-bot tool
D. ChatGPT might offer the wrong information
14. Which opinion is NOT mentioned in the story
A. Using ChatGPT makes students lazy in thinking.
B. The complete ban on using ChatGPT is not wise.
C. ChatGPT will completely change present education.
D. ChatGPT may be used for both teachers and students.
15. The passage is probably from “____________”.
A. Sports and Fitness B. Health and Diet
C. Cultural Exchange D. Science and Education

【答案】
Dear Linda,
I’m sorry to learn that you are having such a bad time. I completely understand how you feel since I’ve also experienced the same thing when I was in a new environment. It’s really common to feel homesick and anxious when everything around you is unfamiliar.
My suggestion is that you should try to make friends with classmates who share similar interests with you, which can help you feel less lonely. What’s more, you can take part in some school clubs or activities. This is because joining them can not only let you learn new things but also make you feel more connected to the school life.
I’m sure you’ll get used to the new life soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
