The scene in the stands at Roland Garros’s Court Philippe-Chatrier was dotted with red banners, adding a glow to the already orange y air spreading the red clay court.
There were hundreds of Chinese waving flags to support Qinwen Zheng, 21, who would soon take gold by defeating Croatia’s Donna Vedic in the women’s singles tennis final.
As she lay down on the dirt, eyes skyward and fists extended into the Paris haze, the win’s gravity seemed to register: This was China’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in this sport. When talking about the Olympics, Zheng said, “I treated the Games differently — the emotion, the fight, the mentality. If you asked me to stay three more hours to fight, I could do it.”
Born in 2002, Zheng started playing tennis at age seven. At age eight, she moved alone for better coaching. Since adolescence, she has deeply admired Chinese athletes, such as the tennis star Li Na, who joined the 2008 Beijing Games, and the runner Liu Xiang, who won gold at the 2004 Athens Games.
“It was really tough,” Zheng said, looking back at those early days. “My mom used to come visit on weekends. When she left, I would hold her leg and cry. After 13, she decided to stay with me full-time to let me have better growth and care. After that, it got easier. And we moved to Europe when I was 17.”
In Paris, Zheng performed exceptionally well on her road to gold, including toppling world number one Iga Swiatek. “With Iga, I was clear,” Zheng said. “I know why I lost to her before. I played rushed, made too many unforced errors, and wanted to hit faster than her. I wanted to prove my power. But in these Games, I didn’t think like this.”
Zheng is conscious, too, of the effects that her milestone achievement in Paris will have. As we wrapped up our chat, she said, softly: “I was reading comments last night and some of them were talking about inspiration, and this makes me feel proud. If you watch my tennis and it brings you some extra strength in your life, that will make me happy.”
4. According to the passage, which is TRUE about Qinwen Zheng
A. She considered all tennis games to be equally important.
B. She felt confident to live alone at her early days of training.
C. She secured the first Chinese Olympic tennis championship.
D. As a teenager, she wanted to go beyond other Chinese athletes.
5. What does the underlined word “toppling” in the 6th paragraph mean
A. Challenging. B. Defeating. C. Discouraging. D. Declining.
6. Which words can best describe Qinwen Zheng
A. Competent and idealistic. B. Creative and independent.
C. Sincere and ambitious. D. Strong-willed and reflective.
7. What can we infer from Qinwen Zheng’s words in the last paragraph
A. She feels delighted to read numerous comments on her match.
B. She expects her achievement to motivate more people.
C. She takes pride in attaining the Olympic gold medal.
D. She hopes that her achievement will earn her fame.
C
Researchers have designed a hand-held device that can capture and change water molecules from the air into drinkable water using only surrounding sunlight as its energy source.
This atmospheric water harvester used a material, known as a metal-organic framework (MOF). It can capture water repeatedly in the hottest and driest place in North America, Death Valley National Park. The tests showed the device could provide clean water anywhere, addressing an urgent problem, as climate change speeds up drought conditions.
“Almost one-third of the world’s population lives in water-stressed areas. The UN predicts that almost 5 billion people on our planet will experience some kind of water stress for a significant part of the year 2050,” said Omar Yaghi. He is the Berkeley chemistry professor who invented MOFs and is leading this study. “This is quite relevant to taking advantage of a new source for water.”
Other kinds of materials, such as salts or hydrogels, cannot operate in extreme weather conditions, in an energy-efficient manner and with a high capacity all at once. The new MOF-powered harvesters can be an exceptionally powerful tool to address water shortage issues related to anything from drinking water to agriculture. This technology can also be used to secure pure water in areas where water is plentiful but not clean.
It’s also extremely efficient at harvesting water, releasing as drinking water 85 to 90 percent of the water it captures as atmospheric vapor. It harvested up to 285 grams of water per kilogram of the metal-organic framework in a day, the amount of a cup of water. It’s also smaller than the earlier type but it is even more energy-efficient. It produced 200 grams of clean water per square meter of water vapor, more than three times the water productivity rate of the earlier type.
There will likely be further developments in efficiency and size for this device. Yaghi said he could see one day the widespread adoption of household-based MOF-powered water harvesters, and community-scale water harvesters with the help of data science and machine learning. Those could be in kitchens or even next to air conditioners to supply homes with clean water for cooking and cleaning. Some companies are already working on this, he said.
8. What can we say about the new hand-held device
A. It helps improve air quality.
B It may solve water pollution.
C. It can run without additional power sources.
D. It is only suitable in the driest and hottest areas.
9. What does the author intend to do in the third paragraph
A. To highlight the fact of water shortage.
B. To show the necessity of the harvester.
C. To advocate relieving efforts in water-stressed areas.
D. To warn against the harm caused by climate change.
10. How much water can we get using a harvester with two kilograms of the MOF daily
A. About 400 grams. B. About 485 grams.
C. About 570 grams. D. About 360 grams.
11. Which of the following statements about the MOF-powered harvester may Yaghi agree with
A. It will have huge market potential. B. It will function best in the kitchen.
C. It will be much cheaper in the future. D. It will help promote machine learning
D
In the early 1960s, Andy Warhol began experimenting with his signature silkscreen technique, which he used to make artistic statements about mass production —including his famous works describing Coca-Cola bottles. “A Coke is a Coke,” he once said. “and no amount of money can get you a better Coke than the one the beggar on the corner is drinking.”
Now, more than 50 years later, Coca-Cola is capitalizing on the artist’s statements. A new global ad campaign, titled “Masterpiece,” features Warhol’s 1962 Coca-Cola, alongside paintings from other masters. Contemporary artists like Stefania Tejada and WonderBuhle are also included.
The two-minute film opens in an art museum, where a group of students are drawing under the watchful eye of their teacher — all except one young man, about to fall asleep, the page of his drawing book completely blank. But then the paintings come to life. A hand from Aket’s Divine Idyll (2022) shoots out from its frame, pulling the Coke bottle from Warhol’s painting, which hangs on a nearby wall. So begins the bottle’s journey through the major works of the museum hall, as characters from paintings new and old throw the drink between them. The final masterpiece we see, which ultimately delivers the ice-cold Coke to the student, is Johannes Vermeer’s Girl with A Pearl Earring (1665). She opens the bottle and hands it over, just before the art student’s professor wanders over to see his now-complete assignment.
The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts is on board with the new campaign. “These pieces, paired with works by emerging artists from around the globe, celebrate the inspirational power of visual art through the magical lens of Coca-Cola.” says Michael Dayton, the foundation’s director of licensing, marketing and sales.
In recent years, using famous artworks in advertising has become a popular strategy. But some artists have a different opinion on these campaigns. In November, the British street artist Banksy called out the clothing brand Guess for “helping themselves” to his artwork for a new collection without his permission. Meanwhile, American artist Keith Haring’s work has been popping up seemingly everywhere, from Adidas sneakers to a Pandora jewelry campaign.
12. What do the underlined words “capitalizing on” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Drawing on. B. Making up. C. Taking in. D. Paying off.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. An introduction to Warhol’s 1962 Coca-Cola. B. Artworks that contribute to Coca-Cola’s ad.
C. The influence of Coca-Cola on art creation. D. A detailed description of Coca-Cola’s ad.
14. What is Michael Dayton’s attitude to Coca-Cola’s ad
A. Doubtful B. Critical C. Favorable D. Disappointed.
15. What might Banksy agree with according to the last paragraph
A Ads using famous artworks should be more creative.
B. Artworks shouldn’t be exposed to the public via ads.
C. A survey should be made before ads use artworks.
D. Ads should not take advantage of artworks that freely.

I was always afraid of water. This fear could not be explained, but I knew that the moment I stepped near any body of water, my legs would turn to jelly (果冻). I would imagine myself drowning in the water and thrashing around (乱扑腾) helplessly. That was why I had never gone into a swimming pool until swimming became a school requirement. My school wanted all pupils to pass a swimming test, and if they could not, then they would have to attend weekly swimming lessons in school, which made me tremble.
Thus, my parents signed me up for swimming lessons at the pool near my house. With great unwillingness, I attended those weekly lessons, and each one was great suffering for me. I was naturally clumsy, and my fear of water did not help at all. Every lesson, I would be spending my time thrashing about in the water, while my classmates would be swimming countless laps effortlessly and even turning over like dolphins in the water. How was I going to pass the test at this rate
In my swimming class, there was an exceptionally athletic girl. Tall and muscular, her name was Kathy. She was the best swimmer in our class and always looked at me with disdain (鄙视), especially when I thrashed about hopelessly in the water.
Once, after a particularly long and hard swimming lesson, I spotted Kathy swimming gracefully in the pool. Gathering my courage, I asked gently, “Kathy, can you teach me to swim ” She stared at me coldly. It was as if I stood at the edge of an endless ocean of inadequacy, my fears appearing like dark storm clouds threatening to drown me. Yet, in that moment, a glimmer of hope flashed within me, a desperate longing for guidance and acceptance. Would Kathy’s icy exterior (外表) melt under the warmth of empathy, or would I remain forever thrashing in the sea of my own fears

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】参考范文:
To my surprise, she nodded after a few moments of silence. From then on, Kathy stayed back for about an hour after every swimming lesson to coach me. She taught me how to propel myself forward in the water and I gradually gained confidence in the pool. Slowly but surely, I improved under her guidance and encouragement. Four months later, it was time for me to take my swimming test. I jumped into the pool and followed all of Kathy’s advice. I swam gracefully, just like a fish, and passed the test with flying colours.
“Congratulations!” Kathy said when she learnt I had passed the swimming test. I threw my arms around her and hugged her tightly. “Thank you! You’re a wonderful friend! If it had not been for you, I would not have done so well!” I exclaimed. Since then, our friendship has blossomed. We met frequently to have fun with each other, sharing both joy and sorrow. Surprisingly, I grew to love the water. A friend like Kathy is hard to come by. She has a heart of gold and I will definitely treasure our precious friendship.
