Recently, I accidentally found a set of Hanfu I only wore once from the bottom of the cupboard. I remember buying them simply to match the ancient-style hair accessories (配饰) a friend gave me. It occurred to me that I had been trapped in the “birdcage effect”.
“Birdcage effect” means that when you get an item one day, you will prepare more things to match it. Weeks ago, I was engaged in shopping in the company of friends. One said that she wanted to buy a good writing pen to match the delicate notebook that her sister gave her, so that she would fall in love with taking notes on reading, and thus love reading. I joked that she must have fallen for the “birdcage effect”. But the friend said with a smile, “Why not use the ‘birdcage effect’ instead ”
For the first time, I heard that the “birdcage effect” can be used in reverse (反向). However, now this can’t help but remind me of middle school when I seemed to have used the “birdcage effect”. Passing by a bookstore one day, I purchased a magazine and saw the call for contributions published in the magazine, so I started writing with eager hands, and then I fell in love with writing.
After shopping with my friends that time, I began to proceed to use the “birdcage effect”. I bought a small fresh tablecloth to decorate my desk, and a beautiful notebook to record my inspiration. When everything was ready, I started writing again.
But how can we get rid of the “birdcage effect” in many things, and even use the “birdcage effect” in the opposite way Various “birdcages” unavoidably appear in life, but we can distinguish them. If it is not in line with the actual situation, it is a “negative birdcage”. Then we must learn to stop losses in time and maintain a heart of abandonment and separation. If it is a “positive birdcage” that motivates us to develop upward, we can clarify our goals, shop or decorate things appropriately and motivate ourselves to move towards our goals. At this time, you will find that the “birdcage effect” is actually not so terrible!
24. According to the author, what is “birdcage effect”
A. Buying-matching habits. B. Unrelated purchase choices.
C. Random shopping behaviors. D. Unplanned spending patterns.
25. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning her middle school experience
A. To recall her delightful days at school. B. To explain the reason for her love with writing.
C. To confirm the positive of the “birdcage effect”. D. To prove her knowledge of the “birdcage effect”.
26. How can we make use of the “birdcage effect” positively
A. By realizing this effect has two sides.
B. By promoting our personal consumption.
C By recognizing this effect is not so terrible.
D. By guiding our acts to go with reasonable goals.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Getting Rid of the Birdcage Effect Confidently
B. Motivating Ourselves to Move Towards Our Goals
C. The Birdcage Effect: Influence on Consumer Behavior
D. The Birdcage Effect: How to Use It to Your Advantage

A new study shows choosing exercise you enjoy is vital for lasting benefits like strength gains and stress relief. “People try to become more active but struggle to sustain the changes,” said Dr. Ronca from UCLA. “We examined how personality affects this to develop better health interventions.”
In this study, researchers assessed 132 participants’ fitness level and personalities, and then divided them into two groups: half took part in an eight-week program combining cycling and strength training, while the other half were a non-exercise control group. During the exercise program, participants were asked to rate their enjoyment of each exercise session, before having their fitness level tested again once the program had been completed.
Clear links appeared between personality and preference. Extroverts (外向者)particularly enjoyed high-intensity exercise sessions. Participants who scored high on anxiety engaged well with the program but preferred short bursts of intensity over longer efforts. They also preferred not being monitored, suggesting these individuals might appreciate being given space for independence and privacy. Highly hardworking and reliable individuals demonstrated strong self-discipline and overall fitness gains, likely motivated by health benefits rather than enjoyment itself.
At the beginning of the study, the stress levels of the intervention group and the control group were similar. However, the only participants to experience a significant reduction in stress levels after exercising were those with high tendency to worry, suggesting tailored exercise offers them particular stress relief benefits.
When choosing a sport, the public should consider personal interests rather than blindly following trends. The most important thing people can do to improve their activity levels is to find something that they enjoy, making exercise a truly sustainable habit. “We found some clear links between personality and exercise preferences, which could potentially be used to personalize physical activity recommendations and help people to become and remain more active,” said Dr. Ronca.
28. How were participants’ responses measured
A. By recording their heart rate. B. By assessing their sense of pleasure.
C. By attending interview sessions. D. By tracking exercise preferences.
29. Who is most likely to stick to a 4-hour boxing group class
A. Mr. Yu, an extrovert who avoids tiring workout.
B. Kevin, a shy boy who loves watching boxing games.
C. Monica, a trendy blogger who values personal space.
D. Ms. Li, a disciplined teacher who seeks weight loss.
30. What can we learn about participants with high anxiety
A. Their stress got relieved after exercises. B. They preferred intense exercises.
C. Their fitness improved more with company. D. They made health benefits a priority.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. Why High-Intensity Workouts Suit Extroverts
B. How Fitness Testing Improves Exercise Enjoyment
C. Personality Preferences: Key to Sustainable Exercise
D. Exercise Enjoyment: Benefits of Monitoring Exercise
D
A research team from AMOLF in Amsterdam has created a soft robot that walks, jumps, and swims — all without a brain, electronics, or AI. As described in the study published in Science, it has no computer, no software, and no sensors. And still, it moves with surprising autonomy and speed, simply because of its body and how it interacts with the world.
So, what’s really driving it Underneath the movement is a principle you’ve probably seen, though you might have overlooked. Think of those shaky, air-filled tube dancers swinging freely around in front of gas stations. The same physics that makes them move could hold the key to the next generation of autonomous robots.
Powered by a continuous stream of air alone, each of the robot’s soft, tubular legs begins to swing. On its own, each leg waves around randomly. But when many are coupled together, their motions quickly synchronize. “Suddenly, order emerges from chaos,” says the first author Alberto Comoretto. “No controllers, no plex collective motions arise just from simple interactions.” Even more surprising, the synchronization adapts. If the robot runs into an obstacle, it adjusts itself. When it moves from land to water, it quickly shifts to freestyle swimming. All the movement emerges from the tight coupling between body and environment.
The research challenges the conventional idea that robots need complicated control systems to realize lifelike behavior. “Simple objects, like tubes, can give rise to complex and functional behavior, provided we understand how to take advantage of the underlying physics,” says principal investigator Bas Overvelde. “There is no brain, no computer. Essentially, it’s a machine. But when properly designed, it can outperform many robotic systems and behave like an artificial creature.”
Possible future applications range from smart pills to space technology: safe microrobots that can be swallowed and release drugs after autonomously reaching the target tissue, robotic wearable suits matching the walking steps without processors, reducing power consumption while enhancing human strength. More broadly, these examples illustrate how this research opens doors to mechanical systems that behave as if they had a computer, without actually needing one.
32. Why does the author mention tube dancers in paragraph 2
A. To stress the wide use of robots. B. To introduce a daily application.
C. To show the need for observation. D. To explain the working principle.
33. What does the underlined word “synchronize” in paragraph 3 mean
A Slow down. B. Match up.
C. Change direction. D. Consume energy.
34. What enables the soft robot to adjust itself
A. Its ability to get over obstacles. B. Its connection with a computer.
C Its interaction with the environment. D. Its reliable performance underwater.
35. What should robots be like according to Bas Overvelde
A. Physics-based. B. Cost-effective.
C. Function-focused. D. Environmentally-friendly.

On the surface, nostalgia simply makes us feel good.__ 37__ According to Professor Ziyan Yang from the Institute of Psychology, CAS, nostalgia creates feelings of warmth, belonging, and even a mental escape to the past. During tough times—whether personal struggles or global crises—nostalgia acts like an emotional safety net. Movies and music are powerful triggers because they recreate familiar emotions and experiences.

What does nostalgia do to our brains Mostly good things! Studies show it boosts happiness, creativity, and energy by activating positive emotions. __ 39__ This youthful optimism encourages us to take risks and chase our goals. Some researchers suggest nostalgia acts like a "psychological immune system", helping us cope with stress.
But can too much nostalgia be harmful In small amounts, it's healthy. However, if we think about the past too much, it can keep us from moving forward. The key is balance—enjoying memories without losing sight of the present. __ 40__ It helps us reconnect with our true selves and remember who we really are.
In short, nostalgia isn't just about reliving the past; it's a tool that helps us navigate the present and future with hope.

“Mom, Dad, guess what, I am going to be in a band.” Well, his parents were stunned sine they knew the little cub did not know the first thing about a musical instrument. His Mom just hesitated for a second and then said. “Well, that is great dear. Un, what will you play ” She didn’t want to disappoint the cub, so she tried to be encouraging.
“I am going to play the harmonica,” he replied. “I just know I can do that. I know I can.” He then ran to his room to practice, and he practiced every day for the next week until the tryouts. For the upcoming school sports festival, I highly recommend including table tennis as one of the activities. It possesses numerous remarkable advantages. Not only does it significantly enhance our hand-eye coordination, reaction speed, and concentration, but it also serves as an excellent means for us to engage in physical activity and maintain good health.
It is quite workable for the school sports festival, considering that there are many ping-pong tables available on campus. Moreover, table tennis is suitable for players of all skill levels and many students show great interest in it. Hence, organizing competitions or recreational play sessions would be relatively effortless.
I firmly believe that table tennis would be an excellent option, bringing substantial benefits to the students.
第二节(满分25分)
【答案】The Bear was heart-broken, especially since all the other animals were chosen for the band but he wasn’t. With his head down he headed home, trying not to cry. He walked toward home, overwhelmed with sadness. He was almost home when he heard his name being called, “Wait, wait, I have to talk to you,” said one of the judges running to him. The Bear couldn’t imagine what was going on since he was already told that he could not join his friends in the band.
“We need a manager for the band, can you do that ”, the judge asked. The bear stood for a second and then replied, “I don’t know how to be a band manager, what if I mess up ” “Well, you won’t know until you try.” Just at that time all the other animals joined the Bear. “Please do it,” they all shouted. “OK, I will do it. Thanks guys.” Everyone won that day. The other animals would be in the band and the Bear would be their manager. It just goes to show that if you don’t find success in one area, have patience and you will find it in another!
