Work is helpful to health. Scientists find that the hard-working people live longer than those who have no jobs. Studies show that the jobless are in poorer health than job-holders. The women have jobs are healthier than housewives.
Why is work good for health It is because work keeps people busy, away from feeling lonely. Researches show that people feel unhappy and worried when they have nothing to do. The happiest people are those who are busy. Many high achievers who love their jobs feel they are the happiest when they are working hard. They work as a bridge between their dream and reality, so they have energy every day. By work, people get to know each other. By taking part in all kinds of activities, they find friendship and warmth. This is helpful to health. The loss (丧失) of work means the loss of everything. It makes people down and it will cause more illnesses.
Besides, work makes one feel hopeful and proud. When a writer finishes his writing or a doctor successfully operates on a patient or a teacher sees his students grow, they are very happy.

Many of us queue (排队) for a long time to see a panda. But a group of people can be close to pandas every day. They are panda keepers! You may envy (嫉妒) them. But behind their job is a lot of sweat (汗水) and hard work.
The job of panda keepers is very detailed (细致的). For example, besides feeding pandas bamboo, the keepers also give them fruits and vegetables. When feeding baby pandas, they don’t put the bamboo on the ground. They stick the bamboo in the wooden “floor”. This way, the pandas can be trained to practice catching and holding things.
Panda keepers need to carry 25 to 50 kg of bamboo and spend four hours cooking rice cakes every day. Also, they need to be on duty 24 hours to take care of baby pandas: cleaning the pandas’ living places, checking their poop and making notes included. Besides, to keep an eye on pandas, keepers are on duty even at night.
Doing the same things day by day may be tiring and boring. But it is their love of pandas that makes the long time worthwhile (值得的). “I will always be by their side and protect them,” said Zhang Yue, a panda keeper in Chengdu.

In many countries it is popular for teenagers to take a part-time job while they are still in high school. In China, however, students are supposed to spend all of their time on their study. In my opinion, it is a good idea for students to go working while studying.

Police officers, soldiers, fire fighters and airline pilots all wear uniforms. These clothes help to protect them. For instance, fire fighters wear coats and helmets to protect them from heat and falling ceilings (天花板). Police officers wear special jackets to protect them from bullets (子弹), and soldiers wear green clothes to help them hide in the forest.
But at other times people wear uniforms for special occasions (场合) such as marching. When officials dress in their best uniforms they look important. When we see airline pilots wearing uniforms we know that they can fly the plane. If you have a car accident on the street and we see a police officer or soldier we know we can get help quickly. So uniforms have many uses. They often protect those who wear them, they make officials look important and they help people in danger to find officers.
Though there are many types of uniforms, the wearer of any particular type is generally stuck with it, without change, until retirement. When people look alike, they are likely to think, speak, and act similarly on the job at least. Uniforms also give rise to some practical problems.

As winter comes, hands can easily get cold. Thick gloves might be a good choice, but sometimes wearing them is inconvenient. However, this was not a problem for ancient Chinese people, who had a fine tool to warm their hands: hand warmers.
There is one folk story about its invention. Emperor Yang from the Sui Dynasty visited Jiangsu in winter. Because of the cold, a local official asked craftsmen (工匠人) to make a small warmer for the emperor that could be held in his hands. So, the hand warmer was created.
By the Song Dynasty, the warmers had become popular among the common people. Skills for producing the tool were widely used in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Many poets from this period kept a record of people using hand warmers.
In the early days, copper (铜) was generally used in the production process. It was more suitable than silver, iron and porcelain (瓷) because it could transfer (传导) heat better, while reducing the risk of breakage or corrosion (腐蚀). Inside a hand warmer, there were coals, some of which were mixed with flowers, giving off a nice smell when burned.
Ancient hand warmers had different designs. Round, square and octagonal (八角形的) shapes were typical, and there were also some fashioned shapes which looked like pumpkins, flowers and turtle shells. The patterns on the warmers would usually be animals or symbols with good meanings, such as deer, flowers or the Chinese characters for long life.

In China, the hottest days of the year are called Sanfu. Sanfu usually starts in mid-July and ends in mid-August. It has three parts—Chufu, Zhongfu, and Mofu, each about 10 days long. People have special ways to stay healthy during these hot days.
One way is using Sanfutie. It is a special bandage made from Chinese herbs (中草药). People usually put it on the back and neck. Doctors of traditional Chinese medicine think it helps with coughs, asthma and arthritis (哮喘和关节炎). It’s a good way to treat (治疗) winter illnesses in summer.
When it’s really hot during Chufu, people don’t feel like eating much. But jiaozi can make them excited about food! Actually, jiaozi is an all-time classic, with 2,000 years of history. During Zhongfu, people often eat noodles. They can help people sweat (出汗) and cool down inside. Many noodle restaurants sell more noodles and even offer new dishes during this time. When Mofu comes, it starts to get a bit cooler. Eating noodles while sweating a lot can make it easy for people to get cold. So people, especially those living in North China, like to eat egg pancakes to keep healthy.
In some places like Changsha in Hunan Province, people eat chicken during Chufu. They believe it can help clear the damp (湿气). In Southern Shandong, people drink mutton soup during Sanfu. They believe mutton, which is hot by nature, can help drive away the cold inside the body.

Cheering, dancing and singing, local people and tourists get together around the fire during the Torch Festival (彝族火把节) in Xichang city, Sichuan every year. It is a must-do event for people there. The festival was listed as national intangible cultural heritage(国家非物质文化遗产) in 2011.
There are different stories about how the festival started. They show the admiration (欣赏) of fire from the Yi People. Fire is important since people can use it to make light, keep warm and cook food. One Yi saying also goes, “Everything you eat must be cooked over a fire.” In farming, fire is used to light plants to later fertilize (使肥沃) the land.
The Yi people used to celebrate the festival as a way to drive away all the bad things and ask for a good harvest (丰收). Today it has become a social event. During the festival, people come together to light torches and join in different activities such as bonfire (簧火) building, horse racing, wrestling and bullfighting. Although there are many changes in the society, the Yi people share their joy and thanks for their good life through the festival.

Around the world, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a hot topic. It is believed that the origins (起源) of TCM go back more than thousands of years. Many cities have at least one acupuncture clinic (针灸门诊). What is more, some Western doctors recommend TCM for certain illnesses. They may, for example, suggest acupuncture for back pain, or a Chinese herbal tea for losing weight or sleeplessness. Within China, there are over 4,000 TCM hospitals.
In ancient times, some doctors in China realized that many illnesses had many different possible natural causes so they believed they could make the patients healthy again using natural remedies (疗法).
Perhaps the most important of these early doctors was Qin Yueren, who went from place to place to provide medical care for those in need. People thought highly of him and called him Bian Que. Much of what has been passed down through history about Bian Que has a legendary (传奇的) quality. For example, he was supposed to have been able to see through the human body, allowing him to clearly diagnose (诊断) diseases, and he was said to be able to raise the dead. He is also reported as having invented his famous medical diagnostic skills called the Four Diagnostic Methods, namely Observing, Listening, Asking and Feeling.
About 2,000 years ago, the knowledge passed on by doctors such as Bian Que was collected in Huang Di Nei Jing (《黄帝内经》). This book is the first medical text that describes blood circulation (血液循环) and the role of the heart in pumping blood (泵血).
Another famous doctor in the history of TCM is Li Shizhen, who is well-known for spending the last half of his life researching and writing a medical book called Ben Cao Gang Mu (《本草纲目》). He believed it was the duty for a doctor to treat all the patients equally and bring benefits to people. Ben Cao Gang Mu lists 1094 herbs, 444 animals and 275 mineral objects used as medicinal materials. Nowadays, this book is still a valuable classic for doctors of TCM and is considered as the most complete medical book in history.
Today, TCM is widely used in China and more than 100 other countries around the world. It should be kept in mind that TCM and Western medicine are different systems with different values and methodologies (方法论). Like Western medicine, TCM tries to prevent and treat diseases. But it is up to individuals (个人) to decide what kind of treatment is right for them.

Psychologists (心理学家) know that children learn important life lessons when they join in sports. Some research even shows the things children learn in a team sport will directly influence how they behave in the future. What do children learn when they take part in a team sport One of the skills is how to balance competing and team work. All sports are competitions and there is always going to be a winner and a loser. But in order to win, kids shouldn’t just care about what they want for themselves. They should do what they are needed to do for the team.
Many kids understand that winning isn’t everything. A U.S. study of 26,000 children found that winning was only the tenth most important reason for playing on a team. More important reasons were feeling the excitement of playing the game, being part of the team, and developing skills. Having fun was the top reason.
The parents of kids should understand that there is something more important than winning. Sports psychologists suggest using the idea of succeeding rather than winning. Succeeding means doing your best. Doing your best is not the same as winning. An important part of “doing your best” means trying to do better than before. Bettering your own time and trying to get to your “personal best” are what everyone can enjoy. Psychologists say that excellent athletes don’t talk about winning. They talk about how they love the sport instead. Canadian Lloyd Eisner, an Olympic skater, is a good example. He remembers, when he was a kid, his parents would never force him to go to the ice rink (溜冰场) to practice. “Their opinion was, if I didn’t want to, I didn’t have to. The result was that when I did go, I knew it was my choice. I went because I loved it.”

Shuttlecock kicking, or Jianzi, is an important part of Chinese culture with a 2,000-year-old history. People first played it in the Han Dynasty. By the Tang Dynasty (朝代), players could do amazing tricks, like kicking the shuttlecock 500 times. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, there were even four famous schools in Beijing, each teaching special skills. Today, shuttlecock kicking is still one of the most popular (受欢迎的) outdoor activities not only for the young, but also for the old.
Players pass (传递) the shuttlecock and must keep it flying in the air without using their hands. Instead, they use their feet, knees or other body parts. They can play it themselves or in a group.
Shuttlecock kicking is great for health. Playing it just for 10 minutes can make your heart stronger. It also helps students focus better in class. Doctors say that keeping fit isn’t just about one thing—you need to eat well, exercise often, and make good choices every day. Let’s see how we can do this!
First, food gives energy to our bodies. Try to eat different kinds of foods from four main groups: fruits and vegetables (like apples and carrots), grains (like rice or bread), dairy (like milk or cheese), and meat (like beef or mutton). Don’t eat too many sweets or salty snacks like cookies or chips between meals. Also, drink six to eight glasses of water every day. Water helps your body work better, just like oil helps a car run fast!
Next, exercise is your body’s best friend. Try to exercise at least three times a week. When you’re busy, don’t worry! You can still stay active in some ways. For example, walk to school if it’s not too far, or play outside with friends instead of watching TV all day. Even dancing to your favorite songs counts as exercise!
Finally, making healthy choices is also a part of your daily life. Stand up and walk if you sit for too long. Choose fruit instead of sweets when you feel hungry. Go to bed early so you can get 8-9 hours of sleep—this helps your mind focus on learning in class the next day.
Remember: Being healthy is not that hard! Start with small changes today—your future will thank you!
