Lesson1 Spring Festival
Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Lead-in (5 minutes) – Activate Prior Knowledge
Activity 1: Warm-up Discussion
Ask students: "What’s your favorite festival How do you celebrate it " Invite 2-3 students to share briefly.
Activity 2: Visual Introduction
Show a short video (1.5 minutes) of Spring Festival scenes (decorating houses, reunion dinner, setting off firecrackers). Ask: "What festival is this What do you see in the video "
Purpose: Arouse interest, connect students’ life experience with the topic, and introduce core customs implicitly.
Step 2: Pre-reading (7 minutes) – Build Language Foundation
Activity 1: Vocabulary Learning
Present key words with pictures/definitions:
decorate (v.): to make sth more beautiful (e.g., decorate the house with red lanterns)
reunion (n.): a gathering of family/friends after separation (e.g., family reunion dinner)
feast (n.): a large special meal
firecracker (n.): a small explosive for celebrations
couplet (n.): two lines of poetry on red paper
Drill pronunciation: Read aloud with the class; ask individual students to repeat.
Activity 2: Predict the Text
Show the text title and subheadings (if any) or pictures in the textbook. Ask: "What do you think the passage will talk about List 2-3 points." Write students’ predictions on the blackboard.
Purpose: Remove vocabulary barriers, activate prediction skills, and prepare for reading.
Step 3: While-reading (15 minutes) – Comprehend the Text
Activity 1: Skimming (3 minutes)
Ask students to read the text quickly and answer:
Q1:What is the main idea of the passage
Q2:How many parts can the text be divided into (Tips: Focus on time order or logical structure.)
Activity 2: Text Structure Analysis (4 minutes)
Ask: "How does the writer organize the text " (Time order: before Spring Festival → New Year’s Eve → New Year’s Day; Logical order: customs → meanings.)
Highlight topic sentences (e.g., "Spring Festival is the most important festival in China." "The reunion dinner is the highlight of the celebration.")
Purpose: Train skimming/scanning skills, deepen text comprehension, and help students grasp the structure.
Activity 3: Scanning (8 minutes)
Ask students to finish ex4 on page 54.
Students work in pairs to find answers; then check as a class.
Step 4: Post-reading (7 minutes) – Apply and Extend
Activity 1: Group Discussion (7 minutes)
Divide students into groups of 4 and discuss:
Q1.Why do they have different experiences and feelings
Q2:Are there any changes in Spring Festival celebrations now (e.g., fewer firecrackers, online New Year greetings) What do you think about these changes
Each group selects a representative to share their ideas (1 minute per group).
Purpose: Consolidate language knowledge, improve speaking ability, and encourage critical thinking about cultural changes.
