Unit2 Festivals and holidays
Lesson4 The Dragon Boat Festival 说课稿
Dear judges, it's my great honor to show my teaching design. The title of my lesson is Lesson 4 The Dragon Boat Festival,which belongs to Unit 2. The topic of unit 2 is about “the festivals and holidays ” ,which is involved in ”man and society.” It includes three sub—themes. The target text belongs to Chinese Festivals and its meaning.
Now I’ll present in 6 parts.(停顿)
Part1. Theoretical basis. (停顿)
According to the New English Curriculum Standards 2022 and the activity-based approach to English learning, the text is analyzed from three aspects. They are WHAT, WHY and HOW.
Part2. Analysis of the text.
About What
It is a narration and mainly talks about China’s Dragon Boat Festival by introducing the writer’s travel experience.
About Why
From the knowledge level,the passage reveals how people celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival.It can help students know about the customs and its meaning.From the competence level,through different reading activities,students are able to train their reading comprehension ability.And from the cultural level,this passage can help students deepen their sense of identity and sense of belonging.
About How
The text is divided into 2 parts. ①The first part is a general part, the writer briefly introduces another name and time and their way to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival,that is going on a trip. ②For the second part, it describes the activities that the writer took part in Yi Chang and Zi Gui in detail.Through visit ,the writer felt the cultural meaning and Qu Yuan’s love for the country and people.
Part3. Analysis of the students
Students have basic skills in expressing related content in Chinese. However, they can’t introduce the Dragon Boat Festival in English And the students have a lack of understanding the cultural meanings. At this stage, students show a strong interest in traditional festival culture.And they posses a certain degree of reading comprehension and language imitation abilities.So ①first, by adopting the activity-based approach, students can practice a series of reading skills ②Second, I will get them to understand the deep meaning through question chain and video. ③Besides, students are the real center of my class, and whole class needs students to work together.I will divide the groups into two teams and they will have team competitions. (黑板贴:This is for team competition. They answer questions. The team get the most Zongzi will be the winner. Students will be active.)
Part4. Teaching objectives & Key and difficult points
Based on the activity-based approach to English learning, the three teaching objectives are listed here.
First of all, about learning and understanding activities, students will perceive related information about the Dragon Boat Festival and learn to express it in English.
Second, about applying and practicing, students can introduce the Dragon Boat Festival by using target language.
Finally, about transferring and creating, students understand the meaning of this festival and build cultural confidence.
These are also key points and difficult points.
Part5. Teaching Procedures
I design all my activities from low level to high level based on the activity-based approach.
Step1. Lead in
First, I’ll tell students that I have got a massage from a special person.And show a picture of Qu Yuan.Ask students “Do you know him Do you want to have a video call with him ”Let’s look together.After the video, The students will know their task is to help Qu Yuan know about the Dragon Boat Festival.(放视频黑板贴龙舟)
Purpose of my design
And The purpose is to arouse students’ interest in this topic.
Step2. Fast-Reading
I’ll guide students to skim the text and answer two questions.
These are the two questions.
The purpose here is to help students get the main structure and content of this text.(黑板贴:when,how)
Step3. Detailed-Reading
In this part,students will finish four tasks.First task,read para 2-4 and fill a mind map about the place they went and the things they did during the writer’s trip.This task will be finished in groups. Second task is to read para 2 and answer three questions about making zongzi :From Who, What and How The third task is to read para 3 and complete the table.Students need to find information about dragon boat race,such as what did they see?How did they feel And the last task is to read para 4, answer four questions about visiting Qu Yuan’s hometown ,from what,why,from who,and how.From these questions, I will lead students to summarize that Qu Yuan is knowledgeable ,loyal and patriotic.So we celebrate festival to remember Qu Yuan. As descendants of the loong,as students,we have the duty to pass Chinese culture.Then I will play a video to help them understand.(放视频贴 make zongzi,watch Dragon Boat race ,visit Zigui.,Why:to remember Qu Yuan.)
Purpose of my design
My purpose is to sort out writer’s trip,dig some deep meanings and conduct emotional education for students.Through the video,students can have a better understanding of the history background and cultural meaning.
Step4. Retelling
After learning and understanding the details of the writer’s trip. I’ll ask students to retell the whole text according to the mind map.
Purpose of my design
The purpose is to help students organize the information they've learned in a more systematic way.
Step 5. Writing
In the lead-in part,students are asked to help Qu Yuan know about the Dragon Boat Festival. Now it’s the show time.I will ask students to introduce the Dragon Boat Festival to Qu Yuan.Then I will invite one student to correct it according to a checklist.
Purpose of my design
The purpose is to let students use the target language to introduce the Dragon Boat Festival and train students’ writing and expressing ability.
Step7 Homework
Students with high level will make a video to speak to Qu Yuan,talking about customs and express respects to him and polish writing.
While students with low level will perfect their writing and search for more customs about the Dragon Boat Festival.Here are some writings of my students.

In the end, all the students should fill in the evaluation tables, which include self-evaluation, peer-evaluation and teacher evaluation. The groups also evaluate all the members.
Part6. Teaching Reflection.
In this lesson.First, this lesson is based on the activity-based approach to English learning,which consists of different activities.Second, this lesson is totally student-centered. Third, this lesson is based on the order of teaching, learning, and evaluating.
Finally, this is my blackboard design. It clearly and directly shows the main content and emotional education of this lesson. I think It’s helpful for students to understand the lesson.
