It’s normal to feel nervous before a test. But sometimes, this nervous feeling can become very strong. You might feel sick, get a headache, or feel very scared or sad. This is called test anxiety.
Dealing with test anxiety is important—it’s even been found that students with greater test anxiety get lower grades than those who have less anxiety. And researchers in Turkey wanted to see if there was a simple way to help students with this feeling.
In Turkey, students in Grade Eight—typically around 14 years old—take a centralized high school entrance exam that tests them in math, science, social studies, foreign languages and Turkish. There’s a lot of pressure to do well in the exam to get into the best high schools, which will then help students get into top universities.
For the study, 162 eighth-grade students in two different middle schools were introduced to a breathing exercise program three months before the exam. The program is used to help them relax and control their stress. Twice a week over eight weeks, the students were led through a 15-to-20-minute program of breathing exercises, which they did before school. The program included things like using the diaphragm (隔肌) from yoga. Students were also taught ways to stop scary or stressful thoughts.
Before and after the program, the students completed a test that scored their levels of anxiety. And by the end of the eight-week program, researchers found that their anxiety scores dropped by 11%.
The researchers said this shows that breathing exercises at school can help students feel less nervous before big tests. It’s simple and doesn’t cost much.
So, if you have a test coming up and you feel worried, take a deep breath—it might really help!
19.What does the underlined part “this feeling” in the second paragraph refer to
A.The feeling of being excited before a test.
B.The feeling of doing well in every subject.
C.The feeling of wanting to go to high school.
D.The feeling of being very nervous before a test.
20.Which of the following is TRUE about the breathing program
A.It cost a lot of money. B.It was done once a month.
C.It took 15 to 20 minutes each time. D.It was too hard for students.
21.How can we tell that the program worked
A.The students smiled more often after taking deep breaths or doing the “lion’s breath”.
B.The students’ anxiety scores went down.
C.The students finished their tests faster.
D.The students got perfect scores in all subjects.
22.What is the writer trying to tell students at the end of the passage
A.Breathing can help when you are nervous.
B.Doing fun things before a test is always helpful.
C.The best way to do well is to talk about your feelings.

Do you often compare yourself to others Do you always try to improve yourself just for others’ approval (认可) If so, you may be having difficulty understanding your self-worth (自我价值).
Self-worth is not about what you look like, what you achieve, or what others think of you. True self-worth comes from within. It means valuing yourself for who you are. When you truly understand your worth, you’ll be proud of being yourself. So, what can you do to develop a strong sense of self-worth
First, start by acknowledging things you do well. Maybe you always listen to friends and family patiently. Perhaps when facing problems, you always remain calm and try to solve them. No matter how small these things seem, noticing them and valuing them can help you think better of yourself.
Another key step is to accept your weaknesses (不足). You can’t do everything perfectly. When you don’t do a good job, don’t be too hard on yourself. Instead, treat yourself kindly as you would treat a good friend in the same situation. View these weaknesses as chances to grow, not reasons to feel “not good enough”.
Don’t connect your worth to those external factors (外部因素) like someone’s opinion or the result of a project. Base your sense of worth on who you are and what you do, such as your good personality and your hard work.
Remember: Knowing your worth means fully accepting yourself. You are valuable for who you are, and you don’t need others to tell you that.
23.Which of the following questions does paragraph 2 answer
A.What does true self-worth mean
B.How does self-worth influence your life
C.How do you develop a strong sense of self-worth
D.What stops you from understanding your self-worth
24.What does the underlined word “acknowledging” mean in English
A.Forgetting. B.Comparing. C.Recognising. D.Finishing.
25.Alice has a strong sense of self-worth. What will she probably say to herself if she doesn’t get a good score in a maths exam
A.“No one is sillier than me.”
B.“There must be something wrong with my score.”
C.“I will work hard, and I believe I’ll improve next time.”
D.“No matter how hard I try, maths just isn’t my thing.”
26.What is the best title for the text
A.Try to be a better person B.Learn to accept your true self
C.Value yourself for who you are D.Explore and achieve your life’s value
D
Have you ever shouted loudly at someone all of a sudden Do you often get angry over small things Actually, being angry can seriously affect our bodies. A new study has suggested that the key to lowering feelings of anger is not venting (发泄) but doing calming activities such as yoga or meditation (冥想).
The study was published in March by Sophie Kasparvik and Brad Bushman from Ohio State University in the US. They wanted to explore the popular theory (理论) that venting anger is a good way of getting rid of it. Examples of venting anger include shouting or dropping something, so that you release (释放) the feeling and therefore don’t feel it any more. The pair looked at 154 other studies on anger. These included 10,189 people with different kinds of ages and backgrounds. In their study, Kasparvik and Bushman explain anger as “an emotional response (情绪反应) to a real or imagined threat”. They used a theory of emotion that says emotions are partly felt in your body and partly in your mind.
The scientists looked at the other studies to see how different activities affected anger. They found that activities such as running or boxing—which are often thought to be good for dealing with anger—weren’t very good at reducing it. In fact, some of these activities actually made it worse because they increased physical responses in the body that are linked to feeling angry. For example, they make people’s hearts beat faster. However, activities that dropped physical responses in the body did help to lower feelings of anger. These included activities that slow the heart rate, such as deep breathing, meditation and yoga. Bushman says activities that increase physical responses may be good for heart health but are “not the best way to lower anger”.
The team found jogging was most likely to increase anger. However, some heart-rate increasing activities—like ball games and team sports—could lower anger. They think this shows that fun or playful activities help to make bad feelings less.
27.How did the writer start the topic
A.By listing numbers. B.By asking questions.
C.By telling stories. D.By comparing facts.
28.According to the study, which of the following are good ways to deal with anger
①Doing yoga quietly ②Taking a slow walk ③Shouting loudly ④Doing meditation.
A.①②③ B.②③④ C.①②④ D.①③④
29.Why do running and boxing sometimes make anger worse
A.Because they make people feel tired after exercise.
B.Because they make the anger-linked response stronger.
C.Because they take too much time to do some preparations.
D.Because they are often thought to be bad for heart health.
30.What can we learn from the passage
A.Raising physical responses is the best way to lower anger.
B.Venting anger is always a good way to deal with fear.
C.All heart-rate increasing activities make anger stronger.
D.Fun or playful activities can help to cut down bad feelings.

A sporting hero
Zheng Qinwen is one of the greatest tennis players in the world. Since she was a child, she has been crazy about tennis. She showed her talent in tennis and began her sporting life at a young age.
As an athlete, she faced many challenges and got hurt sometimes. However, nothing could hold her back. For example, in one important match in 2022, Zheng met a strong opponent and lost the game. Instead of giving up or losing heart, she stayed calm. After that, she trained harder and kept trying. At last, her hard work led to success. She became the first Chinese athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in tennis singles in 2024. There is no doubt that she made history.
In my opinion, she is a symbol of courage and success. Her story encourages me to face difficulties bravely and never lose hope. After all, nothing is impossible as long as we try and stick to it. I am proud of her.

【原文】 I am Tina from England. Last summer, some of my Chinese friends invited me to give a traditional Chinese dancing show with them. I was excited but also a little nervous. When we began to practice, I found it was difficult to keep up with their moves. I was afraid our show wouldn’t be successful because of me. But with my friends’ encouragement, I kept practicing hard with them every day. Slowly, I could keep up with their moves. At last, we showed the dance as a group successfully at an Art Festival. Every one of us shone on the stage. I felt so happy that I shared my happiness with my parents. I think that the most important thing in our success is how we all worked as a team, trying our best together to finish the same task. Because of this wonderful experience, now traditional Chinese dance is my favorite Chinese art.

Instead of giving up or losing heart, she stayed calm. After that, she trained harder and kept trying. At last, her hard work led to success. She became the first Chinese athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in tennis singles in 2024. There is no doubt that she made history.
