The Aswan High Dam is one of the world’s largest dams on the Nile River in southern Egypt. 21教育网
Aswan is a city on the Nile in Egypt. As waters from East Africa flowed down the river, the water in the Nile brought nutrients and minerals that made the soil around the Nile fertile and ideal for farming, but at the same time, it caused serious floods. So, to prevent the river’s flooding, generate electricity and provide water for agriculture, the Aswan High Dam was built. 【来源:21cnj*y.co*m】
In 1899, the construction of the first dam began and lasted until 1902. The dam was 1, 900 m long and 54 m high then. However, the dam was soon found not big enough and the height of the dam was raised twice. When the dam almost overflowed again in 1946, it was decided that rather than raise the dam a third time, a second dam would be built 6 km upriver. Proper planning began in 1952. At first the USA and Britain were to help finance construction. But both nations cancelled the offer for reasons not entirely known. At last, the Soviet Union stepped in, and possibly a third of the cost of the dam was paid for as a gift. The Soviets also provided technicians and heavy machinery. Construction began in 1960, and was completed on July 21, 1970.
The Aswan High Dam is 3, 600 m in length, and 111 m tall. It produces a hydro-electric output of 2. 1 gigawatts and allows for the connection of most Egyptian villages to electricity.

When it comes to President Obama, most of his personal business is already known by the public. Personal information about his children, Malia and Sasha, however, has been kept a little more under wraps.
The New York Times recently released a list of rules that Michelle Obama has mentioned over the years that Malia and Sasha must follow during their time in the White House, as well as in general. See how the first family educates their children:
The girls must write reports about what they’ve seen on their trips, even if it’s not required by their school.
Malia may use her cell phone only on the weekend, and she and her sister cannot watch television or use a computer for anything but homework during the week.
Malia and Sasha have to play two sports: one they choose and one selected by their mother.
Malia must learn to do laundry(洗衣服)before she leaves for college.
The girls have to eat their vegetables, and if they say they are not hungry, they cannot ask for cookies or chips later. 21
While these might be shocking to some, Michelle said, “They’re not little princesses. It’s just basic rules, boundaries, and expectations that we would have normally. ”21*cnjy*com
Michelle also mentions another set of rules:
The girls must do their chores(家务), though the White House has a large staff. Malia and Sasha have chores of their own.

People who smoke could lose around one third of their daily memory, researchers say.
A study by a team at Northumbria University showed that smokers lost more of their memory when compared to non-smokers.
And the research also found that those who kicked the habit saw their ability to recollect information restored to almost the same level as non-smokers.
The study involved more than seventy 18-to-25-year-oldsand included a tour of the university’s campus. Those who took part were asked to recall small details, such as a list of songs played at a campus concert and tasks completed at various points-known as real world memory test. Smokers performed badly, remembering just 59 percent of tasks. But those who had given up smoking remembered 74 percent and those who had never smoked recalled 81 percent of tasks.
Dr. Tom Heffernan, who leads Northumbria University’s Collaboration for Drug and Alcohol Research Group, said the findings would be useful in anti-smoking campaigns. He said, “Given that there are up to 10 million smokers in the UK and as many as 45 million in the United States, it’s important to understand the effects smoking has on everyday cognitive(认知的)fun_ction—of which prospective memory is an excellent example.
“This is the first time that a study has set out to examine whether giving up smoking has an impact on memory. We already know that giving up smoking has huge health benefits for the body, but this study also shows how stopping smoking can have knock-on benefits for cognitive functions too. ”
The research will now investigate the effects of passive smoking on memory, while Dr. Heffernan and Dr. Terence O’Neil will look into the effects of third-hand smoking-toxins(毒素)left on curtains and furniture.

For sixty years Barbara Cooney created children’s books. She wrote some. And she provided pictures for her own books and for books written by others. Her name appears on one hundred and ten books in all.
The last book was published six months before her death. It is called“Basket Moon”. It was written by Mary Lyn Ray. It tells the story of a boy who lived a century ago with his family in the mountains in New York state. His family makes baskets that are sold in town. Detail after detail. Whom am I pleasing besides myself? I don’t know. Yet if I put enough in my pictures, there may be something for everyone. Not all will be understood, but some will be understood now and maybe more later. ”

Text 10
My first Spring Festival in north China was a bit of a shock. Where was the spring? There was snow on the ground and ice on the Summer Palace Lake and a northwest wind was blowing.?In England, where I come from, ?we think of flowers that bloom in spring.
Then I had another problem. In Beijing, although there is snow and ice, it’s often sunny over the Spring Festival. So I liked to be out, to walk in the snow round the Summer Palace Lake or to skate on Kunming Lake. Then we’d come home and find that old friends had called on us while we were out. So gradually we learned how the Chinese people spend the Spring Festival. The first day is for family getting together. The second and third days are for paying and receiving visits. So we changed our holiday life style and stayed at home or called on friends those days.
These days we don’t always stay in Beijing for the Spring Festival. Sometimes we go on a trip to some other part of China. ?Lastyear we were lucky enough to go to Hainan Island. Instead of skating we went swimming. That was a treat. The sea water in February was warmer than it is in the middle of the summer in England. That made up for these snowy, icy, windy Beijing springs.

referred to作the thief的定语, refer to与the thief为被动关系, 故用过去分词作定语。
26.【解析】选A。 故选A。
date from=date back to, 无被动语态, 无进行时态。此处which dates back to是定语从句, 修饰the painting。
①The old buildings, the seventeenth century, were destroyed in the earthquake.
A. date from B. dated from
C. dating from D. to date from
date from=date back to, 无被动语态, 无进行时态。此处dating from是现在分词短语作定语, 修饰the old buildings。
② the 1980s, our friendship gave both of us pleasure.
A. Dated from B. Dating from
C. Dates from D. To date from
date from=date back to, 无被动语态, 无进行时态。
30.【解析】选A。
When it rained, the roof became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof, is the origin of the old-fashioned saying, “It’s raining cats and dogs”. 【
A. it B. that
C. where D. and this
31.【解析】选A。
32.【解析】选A。
考查短语bring an end to sth. =bring sth. to an end。
35.【解析】选A。
他获得了2006年全明星赛MVP(最有价值球员)。 21*cnjy*com

39.【解析】选A。
be known as. . .

stop sb. (from)doing sth.

So, to prevent the river’s flooding, generate electricity and provide water for agriculture, the Aswan High Dam was built. 2-1-c-n-j-y
57.【解析】选A。
. . the water in the Nile brought nutrients and minerals that made the soil around the Nile fertile and ideal for farming. . . When the dam almost overflowed again in 1946, it was decided that rather than raise the dam a third time, a second dam would be built 6 km upriver. It produces a hydro-electric output of 2. 1 gigawatts and allows for the connection of most Egyptian villages to electricity. In 1899, the construction of the first dam began and lasted until 1902.
At first the USA and Britain were to help finance. . . But both nations cancelled the offer可推知美国和英国没有提供资金支持; 再根据第三段At last, the Soviet Union stepped in, and possibly a third of the cost of the dam was paid for as a gift. The Soviets also provided technicians and heavy machinery, 21*cnjy*com
In addition to the benefits, however, damming the Nile caused a number of issues.
The New York Times recently released a list of rules that Michelle Obama has mentioned over the years that Malia and Sasha must follow during their time in the White House, as well as in general. See how the first family educates their children可知本文主要讲述了美国第一家庭对孩子立的规矩。www-2-1-cnjy-com
根据第一段的关键词most of his personal business is already known. . . however. . .
The girls must write reports about what they’ve seen on their trips, even if it’s not required by their school.
64.【解析】选A。 Malia and Sasha have to play two sports, Malia must learn to do laundry, The girls have to eat their vegetables, Malia may use her cell phone only on the weekend, 所以A是例外。
65.【解析】选A。 Michelle Obama has mentioned over the years that Malia and Sasha must follow during their time in the White House, as well as in general. 可知奥巴马夫人提出两个女儿在白宫和平时必须遵守的一些规则, 而A项用only when they live in the White House是不正确的。
People who smoke could lose around one third of their daily memory, researchers say.
67.【解析】选A。 Smokers performed badly, remembering just 59 percent of tasks. But those who had given up smoking remembered 74 percent and those who had never smoked recalled 81 percent of tasks.
根据第五段中的内容the findings would be useful in anti-smoking campaigns.
We already know that giving up smoking has huge health benefits for the body我们早已经知道戒烟对身体健康有很大益处, 那么上一句话This is the first time that a study has set out to examine whether giving up smoking has animpacton memory讲述的就是“这是第一次着手检查戒烟是否对记忆力有影响的一项研究”。 www.21-cn-jy.com
70.【解析】选A。 The research will now investigate the effects of passive smoking on memory, while Dr. Heffernan and Dr. Terence O’Neil willlook into the effects of third-hand smoking, 我们知道现在(now)该研究将开始调查吸二手烟对记忆的影响, 而(while)赫夫南博士和特伦斯·奥尼尔博士将研究(will look into)“吸三手烟”——吸烟后残留在窗帘和家具上的毒素对人体的影响。
It is called“Basket Moon”. It was written by Mary Lyn Ray. 可知选B。
72.【解析】选A。 Barbara Cooney was known for her carefully detailed work. Another example of her detailed work is in her retelling of“Chanticleer and the Fox”. 故选A。
74.【解析】选A。
75.【解析】选A。 Her name appears on one hundred and ten books in all.

Dear Bob,
It’s very kind of you to write me and let me know about your beautiful city. Now I’d like to tell you something about my hometown Jiangcheng.
The city stands on the bank of the Changjiang River. It is a beautiful place for people to live in. Its economy has been developing rapidly in the past ten years. New factories, houses and roads have been built. More schools and hospitals are available for its people. However, there are still some problems, such as water and air pollution and heavy traffic in rush hours. In my opinion, Jiangcheng should develop its economy scientifically. I would also think that the growth of its population should be brought under control so that we’ll have a better hometown in future.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Xiaohua
