1167130012192000Class begins.Good morning everyone!Today we are going to learn unit 4 reading and thinking part----understand body language.
Before we start, let me introduce myself.I'm your new English teacher. you can call me Kim.And you don’t know me , right? It doesn't matter. But I bet you definitely know my friend. So, come and meet my friend.
Here is a photo of me and my friend.Do you know him? Can you tell me his name?
Yes, 憨豆先生,or we can call him MR Bean.
He is a world-famous mime artist.Do you know the Chinese meaning of mime? OK, mime means哑剧. Now please read after me.
So mime is a special art form that tells stories without saying a single word.
I have a question here. Without saying anything how do we know the actors’ feelings. Now let's enjoy a short mime clip and find out.
So MR bean told us the roast steak beef was delicious or not?Yes!the food is bad or disgusting.
I used the word“ told”, but he did not say anything. How do we know the food is bad ?
Exactly through his facial expressions.
So, besides facial expressions, how do people communicate with each other without speaking?
Please brain storm with your deskmate for one minute.
Any volunteers?Yes you please.
From the picture, we know the man is tired .Because he is lying on the sofa.We know that through his postures.
If your teacher looks at you like this, do you know her feeling? Yes, she is angry. So eye contact can also give us information.
If you feel unhappy, and your friends give you a hug or tap your shoulder, what does it mean? He is comforting you. So physical contact is a way, too.
And we can know others’ feelings through his gestures, eyes and physical contact.
Wonderful, all these are called body language.
So, please open your book and turn to page 38.Today let’s explore the fascinating world of body language by reading the passage “listening to how bodies talk”. let’s write down the title together.
Now please look at the title“ Listening to how bodies talk” And think about two questions.First question, what do you think the passage will be about .Second one, what type of the passage is it.
Question one,Look at the title , do our bodies actually talk ?it can say something to you? No, right? So the passage may be about body language .
Good guess, second question ,the passage type?Yes it’s an exposition because it uses the word “how”, it explains something about body language. Perfect !now let’s check out our predictions through reading.
First,Let’s do scanning.
Listen to the tape and find topic sentence of each paragraph.
Before that I'd like to give you one tip.If we want to find the main idea or the topic sentence of one paragraph, we should focus on the opening or closing sentence, which means the first or the last sentence.
Take paragraph one as an example. The topic sentence is the last sentence.“Words are important but are can also give...” Please look at the two words“Important, also”.So can you tell me body language is important or not?Yes it is also important .So the first paragraph tells about the importance of body language.right?
Now please listen to the tape and underline the topic sentence of each photograph.
That's it. who found it?
The topic sentence of paragraph two is? Perfect! You got the right answer. How about paragraph three. Good! Paragraph 4? Now please pay attention to the three topic sentence. They have the words “varies, different , differ”. So the three paragraphs tell the differences of body language in different cultures. What about paragraph five! Now look at the keyword same. so this paragraph focus on the differences or the similarities? Correct !now comes to the last paragraph. Yes its about the different uses.
So how many part can we divide the passage into? Great! Four part!It tells the importance, differences, similarities and different uses of body language. It follows general to specific structure. So which picture match the structure?A,B or C ?Yes option C.
Now let's read carefully and finish the tasks.
Read paragraph 1 again and answer the question “what can body language tell us?”So we need to find “can do something” or“to do something ”structure in the paragraph. You have one minute ,go!
Time’s up. Who wants to share your ideas with us?
So it can tell us people's thoughts opinions and feelings. And this helps us have better interactions with others.
Now let's learn a key phrase “interaction with”.It means “Communication with”. For example,we should have more interactions with our parents.
And, Paragraph 2 and 3 talk about cultural differences in specific gestures. Let’s fill in the table. 3 minutes for you .
First,paragraph 2, eye contact.
In some countries, eye contact means interest.
In middle eastern countries, it is not permit d between men and women .
And in Japan looking down when talking to older people shows respect.
Next paragraph three the OK gesture.
In Japan it means money
In France it means zero
And in Brazil and Germany it is not polite.
Paragraph four is about “yes” and “no” gestures.
This one is simple. So let's check together.
In most countries shaking head means no.While nodding means yes.
Is it the same all over the world? No!Bulgaria and southern Albania,It is the opposite. It is totally different.
Please look at the GIF .Let's do a small exercise. If you meet a friend from Bulgaria and he nods his head ,what does he mean?
Exactly he means no.And if he shakes his head, it means yes.
Wonderful! Also the passage mentions greeting manners.I will give you one minute to look through the part and finish the following three questions. What will people do when they meet each other in different countries.ABC or,D?
Perfect! You all did a great job.
Let’s move on to paragraph 5. It tells us two gestures with the same meaning all over the world. What are they?
The first one is placing your hands together on the side of the head with eyes closed. It means “sleep” or “ I want to sleep”I am sleepy. OK. If I want to express I'm full. What should I do?Yes, moving hand in circles over the stomach after a meal. Can you do that?Well done.
And the last paragraph. The different uses of smiling. Please read the paragraph again and answer the question. What can smiles do?Please find “can do something” or“to do something ”structure. One minute go!
So what is your answer?
Perfect.That is it ?
Is that all?
Anything else?
If you feel sad, your friend smiles at you. How do you feel? This smile will give you power or comfort.
So there are so many benefits of smile. What do you need to make a smile?Do you need money or something else to make it happen?
No, right? Just smile. A smile costs nothing but gives a lot.
So do remember keep smiling in your life,OK?
OK now lets retell the passage with the keywords.
The crucial thing is body language is important we need to use it properly. We need to change our behaviors when we in different countries.Just as the saying goes. When in Rome do as Romans do.
Now you know a lot about body language.I need you to help me.Yesterday, my friend MR Bean sent me a voice message.Let's listen to it together.
So MR Bean will visit China next week. What body language advice can you give him.I have thought about three aspects.
Please discuss in groups and think about it in 5minutes.
You are a group 1 ,you answer the first question. And you guys are group 2 answer the question two.And this group answer the last question. After that I need two students of each group to tell me what he can do and what he cannot do.
OK times up. Please share your advice.
Group one, when meet people in China , what should you do?
We should shake hands instead of kissing on the cheek or hand.
What about group two. When talking ,we should keep smiling and make eye contact. And we should not play our phones.
Excellent advice!Group three?
We shouldn’t sit with crossed legs or stand with cross the arms.It means e are not interested in the topic or I am not patient. We should stand properly,And keep proper distance with each other.
So today we learn about the importance, cultural differences ,the similarity of body language .Remember using right body language can help us communicate better with others.
Now here comes your homework.
You got two options.
Option 1 search for more cross-cultural body language examples and share next class.
Option 2 write an email to MR Bean.
Class is over. Goodbye, everyone.
